Some new phenolic Mannich bases and their dehydrogenation with disodium-mercuric-ethylenediaminetetraacetate are described. The reaction products are lactams and their structure has been determined by synthesis.

AbstractThe reaction of o‐phenolic Mannich bases with enamines yields cyclic O,N‐acetals having a 2‐aminodihydropyran or a spiropyranopiperidine structure in common. The 2‐aminodihydro‐pyrans are easily converted to 2‐hydroxydihydropyrans and to pyrans. The preparation of a large variety of pyran‐containing fused ring systems is reported.

1. The kinetics of the interaction of triethyl phosphite with 2-diethylaminomethyl-6-methylphenol in Tetralin and dimethylformamide were studied at various mole ratios of the reagent. The rate constants were determined, and it was shown that the reaction studied obeys a first-order equation. 2. A deviation from additivity is observed for the index of refraction, density, and heat capacity of mixtures of 2-diethylaminomethyl-4-methylphenol with triethyl phosphite as a function of their composition on composition versus property diagrams. 3. It was hypothesized that the limiting step of the reaction studied is monomolecular decomposition of the complex of phenolic Mannich bases with phosphite, of the solvate type.

Reaction of ester-amides of trivalent phosphorus acids with phenolic mannich bases

1. The reaction of diethyl diethylamidophosphite with 2-diethylaminomethyl-R-phenols gave 2-oxo-2-ethoxy-R-1-oxa-2-phosphaindan, the ethyl ester of 2-ethoxy-R-benzylamidophosphonic acid, and R,R-2,3,5,6-dibenzo-7a-oxo-1,7-dioxa-7a-phosphatetrahydroindan. 2. The reaction of ethyl di(diethylamido)phosphite with 2-diethylaminomethyl-6-methylphenol goes with the formation of 2-oxo-2-diethylamido-7-methyl-1-oxa-2-phosphaindan, 3′,9″-dimethyl-2,3,5,6-dibenzo-7a-oxo-1, 7-dioxa-7a-phosphatetrahydroindan, and 2-oxo-2-(2′-methyl-6′-diethylaminomethyl)phe-noxy-7-methyl-1-oxa-2-phosphaindan. 3. In the infrared spectra of the studied phosphaindans the absorption bands at approximately 870 and 1180 cm−1 are characteristic for the grouping\(\begin{array}{*{20}c} \setminus \\ {||} \\ {||} \\ / \\ \end{array} \begin{array}{*{20}c} {\_\_\_O} \\ {\_CH_2 } \\ \end{array} \begin{array}{*{20}c} \setminus \\ / \\ \end{array} P\begin{array}{*{20}c} { / / } \\ \setminus \\ \end{array} .\).

Synthesis of substituted be nzylphosphonic acids

1. A study was made of the rearrangement of triethyl phosphite under the action of α2-(diethylamino) 2,4-, -2,5-, and -2,6-xylenols, 4-chloro-α-(diethylamino)-o-cresol, α-(diethylamino)-o-cresol, α,α′-bisdiethylamino-2,6-xylenol, and α2,α6- and α2,α4-bisdiethylaminomesitols. 2. These phenolic Mannich bases are able to react in the free state with triethyl phosphite with formation of the corresponding ethoxybenzylphosphonic esters.
