Interpreting Neuroscientific Evidence in the Legal Domain: Do the Stereotypes Come In?

The current article explores the meaning of neuroscientific evidence in the legal domain. It takes a social-psychological perspective to discuss how group-based stereotypes affect legal decision-making critically. Examining how any interpretation is anchored and objectified is interesting as evidence is interpreted in the context. Dominantly, with the ubiquity of neuroscience in different domains, the brain is positioned as an authentic source of nurturing authenticity. It is observed that sometimes unquestionable scientific knowledge may surpass the rationality and intuition of judges. In one way, it is a boon; in another, it is shaping the whole framework of our knowledge system, where knowledge from brain studies reifies our understanding of human actions and thinking.

Analysis of Network Public Opinion from the Perspective of Social Psychology

Online public opinion refers to the behavior of individuals or groups of people discussing, commenting, and expressing their views on a particular topic or event on the Internet through various forms of social media. With the popularity of the Internet and the rise of social media, online public opinion plays an important role in today’s society. It is not only an important channel for information dissemination but also an influence on social trends, public opinions, and values. Therefore, the analysis of network public opinion has important theoretical and practical significance.

The aftermath of the 2019 Pulwama terror attack – religion, nationalism and exclusion in online news comment sections

ABSTRACT This study analyses the Indian and Pakistani publics reactions of the extensive coverage of the Pulwama terror attack, through an analysis of the online comments appearing at the end of the news stories covering the attack from the two leading English newspapers: Times of India (TOI) (India), and Dawn (D) (Pakistan). A qualitative content analysis is performed to compare and examine this dialogue emerging in the news comments sections. Findings are explored and discussed through conceptualizations of religion, nationalism, and a social psychological perspective towards exclusion of out-groups.

The Use of Turning Points in Understanding Homelessness Transitions: A Critical Social Psychological Perspective

ABSTRACT We argue for use of the narrative concept of the “turning point” in homelessness research from a critical social psychology perspective. BackgroundTurning points are often understood as rifts in the life course followed by significant change in direction. However, within narrative theory they are not events but subjectively significant features of the person’s life-story. The turning point as narrative toolThe analysis identified how turning points were deployed by participants in a study of homelessness experiences. Participants used the turning point in constructing themselves as agentic, reformed individuals who had gained insight. However, this did not necessarily bring positive life changes. Data extracts are used to illustrate the power of adopting a constructivist, narrative theoretical orientation in understanding turning points in accounts of homelessness. Implications for practiceViewing turning points in this way may help us understand how best to provide support for people without housing.

Does Pollyanna hypothesis hold true in death narratives? A sentiment analysis approach

Pollyanna hypothesis claims that human beings have a universal tendency to use positive words more frequently and broadly than negative words. The present study aims to test Pollyanna hypothesis in medical death narratives at both lexical and text levels by using sentiment analysis and emotion detection methods, and to qualitatively analyze the contextual use of emotion words to deepen the understanding of doctors' emotions. Sentiment analysis showed a strong token-based linguistic positivity and a weak type-based negativity bias at the lexical level, and a general positivity bias at the text level, despite the gender of the doctors. Emotion detection discovered three prominent emotions of “joy”, “sadness”, and “anger”, and a greater diversity of negative emotions in contrast to positive emotions in medical death narratives. Contextual analysis revealed that emotion words associated with joy were primarily observed in contexts related to doctors' actions and behaviors aiming to benefit others and promote social wellbeing. Emotion words associated with sadness and anger were chiefly employed to describe situations involving patients' death and doctors' attitudes towards death. The results confirm Pollyanna hypothesis at both token-based lexical level and text level and falsify the hypothesis at type-based lexical level. Possible explanations are explored by contextual analysis, and theoretical analysis from the perspectives of cognitive linguistics and social psychology. The findings are expected to enrich the understanding of Pollyanna hypothesis as well as the junior doctors' emotional responses to clinical deaths.

Gender Qualities and Campus Bullying: Psychological Causes and Social Ecology Behind the Rose Boy

In April 2000, "Rose Boy" Ye Yongzhi died due to bullying by his classmates for his unique gender identity. Although the Ye Yongzhi incident has drawn increasing attention to the seriousness of gender identity discrimination and campus bullying, the phenomenon of "gender bullying" still exists today. In this study, the author conducted a questionnaire survey of 100 male youths in mainland China who had experienced or were currently experiencing campus bullying to clarify the current status of campus bullying and gender bullying in mainland China, and conducted statistics on the forms, reasons, solutions, and impacts of bullying. On this basis, this paper adopts a social-psychological perspective to explore the social psychological causes behind "gender temperament bullying". On the one hand, adolescents may develop stereotypes about gender temperament due to prejudice. On the other hand, adolescents may exhibit irrational group behavior under the influence of "deindividuation". In addition, "obeying authority" is also one of the reasons why some teenagers join the ranks of bullies. Finally, this paper elaborates on the deeper macro-social ecology behind social psychology, such as the influence of traditional gender role beliefs on parents' expectations and requirements for their children in traditional Chinese families; most schools in China fail to provide comprehensive and scientific gender education courses, lacking in-depth exploration and correct guidance on gender issues; the administrative and judicial departments have not sufficiently punished and prevented campus bullying; the whole society's attention to campus bullying and gender discrimination also needs to be improved.

Social representations of teachers' dropout in the French context: An exploratory study

AbstractThis work aims to investigate the causes behind teachers leaving their profession in France, as well as the aspects that influence some teachers to stay in. The phenomenon of teacher dropout and abandonment is increasingly prevalent in OECD countries, particularly affecting new teachers. Taking a social psychological perspective, the research delves into the representational content of teachers' attitudes towards their profession. By distinguishing between teacher dropout and abandonment—the latter being considered an earlier phase, the results suggest that pupils play a central role in preventing teachers' dropout, along with the love and passion for teaching and the discipline they teach. Conversely, lack of consideration, inadequate resources, working conditions and classroom management challenges are identified as aspects contributing to increase teachers' dropout phenomenon. The findings provide an empirical basis for future studies and valuable insights for enhancing initial teacher training programmes. Understanding these phenomena through the lens of social representations provides valuable insights for developing supportive environments that foster teacher retention and well‐being and facilitate intervention and prevention strategies targeting key elements linked to teachers dropping out.

The association of farmers’ cognition, intention and behaviour towards sustainable intensification of cultivated land use in Shandong Province, China

ABSTRACT Cultivated land system confronts with a series of problems hindering its socioeconomic and ecological sustainability. Sustainable intensification of cultivated land use (SICLU) is considered as an efficient method to achieve three aspects of sustainable goals in society, economy and ecology simultaneously. Farmers, the main executor of all agricultural strategies, are the core of SICLU research. However, there is a small quantity of researches on SICLU from the perspective of farmers’ social psychology. Therefore, this article measured the level of SICLU at the farmer scale using super-efficiency SBM model, and relying on structural equation modeling and an innovative research framework, explored the association mechanism among farmers’ cognition, intention and behavior of SICLU. Finally, the results showed that (1) most of samples are at a medium or higher level of SICLU. (2) all samples’ cognition are significantly positively related to their behavior and their behavior significantly negatively affect their intention. (3) correlation characteristics among them are slightly different under each level. The proposed research outline not only expand the scope of SI research to the perspective of social psychology in breadth, but in depth take targeted actions to protect agricultural environment, make cultivated land system sustainable and alleviate food crisis.

Improving Cultural Sustainable Tourism: Evidence of Saba Budaya Baduy from Baduy Tribe, Indonesia

Summary Baduy Cultural Tourism is the activity of visiting the Baduy Tribes in Indonesia, which potentially threatens the resilience of the Baduy’s culture. Responding to this, the Baduy Customary Institution changed the nomenclature of Baduy Cultural Tourism to Saba Budaya Baduy . This case study explores the value and specialty of Saba Budaya Baduy as the identity of Baduy Tribes, to analyze the potential of threats and the cultural resilience from the usage of Baduy Cultural Tourism and Saba Budaya Baduy nomenclatures. It explores the values of Saba Budaya Baduy as the effort of cultural resilience to realize cultural sustainable tourism. This qualitative research is based on tourism anthropology and social psychology perspectives in line with the interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) technique. The initial findings indicate that Saba Budaya Baduy is guided by the principle of fostering a strong relationship between hosts and guests, rooted in the cultural values of the Baduy Tribe. This approach aims to enhance the representation of the Baduy Tribe and improve the overall experience for visitors engaging in activities with the tribe. The results also highlight how psychological resilience, in responding to external threats, is reflected in the Baduy indigenous people, who are obedient in maintaining and implementing their ancestral traditions. Finally, Saba Budaya Baduy is oriented toward the social, cultural, tourism economy, and environmental resilience dimension of visiting activities within the Baduy Tribe. Therefore, Saba Budaya Baduy can realize and improve cultural sustainable tourism which is oriented toward cultural resilience and sustainable tourism activities. Information © The Authors 2024

Digital Well-Being as a New Kind of Adaptation to the New Millennium Needs: A State-of-the-Art Analysis

Abstract Since technology has been entering into human beings’ everyday life, individuals established a deep relationship with digital technology, thus an embodied link between people and digital instruments has been born. This is particularly evidenced by recent literature about screen time (duration of time spent by the individual in using electronic/digital media like television, smartphone, tablet or computer), it significantly influences different human beings’ dimensions: physical, psychological and neurological functions. Impact of digital technology on human beings can be considered as a result of syntonic functioning in order to improve different people’s life areas (e.g., work, social or intimate relationship, learning), while the dystonic relationship is evidenced as a result of human addiction to digital technology. The present study aims to provide a cognitive and social psychology perspective on how screen time is changing our existences, defining digital technology as a gift which people should be aware of in terms of positive but even negative consequences in everyday life.

Social Psychological Perspectives on Islandness: Identities, Vulnerabilities and Precarities

Although there are many widely perceived attractions to living on a small island, island life is not without its challenges. The physical aspects of these are well rehearsed. The psychological ones, less so. Drawing on social psychological theories, we analyse the experience of living on small islands, with a focus on two small British islands. Data were collected through ethnographic fieldwork, involving observations and interviews with small island inhabitants. We found a range of factors impacting them psychologically, including several that suggest identity and social identity theories may provide a useful psychological lens for understanding these communities. There were also other psychological features identified that suggest a self-perception of vulnerability. These were reflected in concerns around the precarity of employment, but also evident in islanders’ discourses around health (both physical and mental). These findings echo previous authors’ assertions concerning the existence of an ‘island psychology’ evident in the experiences of island residents, but also contribute to discussions around its origins and mechanisms of influence - which we argue have been hitherto, relatively atheoretical. Importantly, a better understanding of island experience, and the relevant theoretical frameworks, can assist in supporting the wellbeing of islanders and the sustainability of their communities.

A Study on the Correlation Between Chinese Youth's Use of Internet Social Media and the Formation of Polarization Bias Cognition: Taking Contradictory Gender Bias as an Example

The phenomenon of group polarization caused by modern online social media is becoming increasingly severe, such as gender conflicts, increased intergenerational misunderstandings, extreme fixed cognition leading to online violence, etc. This work takes the phenomenon of contradictory gender bias as an example, discusses and designs experimental ideas to explore the correlation and impact of social media usage frequency on the phenomenon of contradictory gender bias, Through a questionnaire survey, 188 men and women aged 18-40 were surveyed on their social media usage habits and the degree of conflicting gender biases. Quantitative analysis and testing were conducted to determine the correlation between the frequency of social media usage and the degree of gender biases. The conclusion was drawn that internet social media filters fixed audience groups through big data, forming a fixed atmosphere of group public opinion. The characteristics of social media groups lead to group polarization, and obvious opposition leads to conflicts, Conflict also intensifies and forms solidified extreme radical biases and perceptions among groups. This study analyzes the common issues of group bias cognition and conflict opposition in internet social media from the perspective of social psychology, providing a comprehensive thinking model and experimental direction.

The connections—and misconnections—between the public and politicians over climate policy: A social psychological perspective

AbstractWe review findings from social psychology and related fields to examine the bidirectional relationship between the public—what are their views about climate change and the need for policies to address the climate crisis—and the politicians who are making (or not making) climate policy and beholden to electoral constraints. We illustrate social psychological pressures that influence policy support and their relevance to how policies emerge from coordinated action and how barriers impede policy progress. We review two factors that have been the focus of research within communication, political science, and psychology and that are relevant to how climate policies are promoted (or undermined): activists and the media. We examine the process by which activists amplify and transmit the preferences of the public to politicians, and how research on persuasion and social norms helps understand how this effect can be amplified or diminished. We also describe how the media environment can amplify or diminish the roles of the public and the politicians in influencing each other. As the world confronts the climate crisis, research from social psychologists, environmental psychologists, political scientists, and communication scholars has examined the interrelations between the public, politicians, media, and activists, but largely in a disconnected way. The current paper provides a social psychological framework to integrate these approaches and, in so doing, suggest new directions for research and theory‐guided ways to influence policy around climate change.

Understanding Contemporary Career Success: A Critical Review

This article provides a critical review of developments in the literature on career success. We review work from both the organizational psychology (OP) and organizational behavior (OB) disciplines, highlighting the different perspectives, strengths, and weaknesses of each area, and attempt to reconcile these perspectives on career success to suggest productive new research directions. First, the article reflects on conceptualizations of objective and subjective career success and their relative value to the field. We then discuss several categories of career success predictors drawn from economic, sociological, and social-psychological perspectives used in OP and OB. These include human capital, internal and external labor markets, sponsorship and social capital, stable and malleable individual differences, and career self-management behaviors. We provide research suggestions within each of those sections as well as an integrative research agenda built around several emerging issues and theoretical perspectives, encouraging future research on the implications of sustainable careers, career shocks, marginalized group experiences, and alternative employment arrangements for career success.

The Paradox of Leisure in the Age of AI: Impacts on Work, Inequality, and Well-being

Keynes once predicted that with the development of technology, the future will definitely be an era of leisure. But with the development of AI and other technologies, the era of leisure has not arrived. This article analyzes the impact of technological advancements represented by AI on individual leisure time from the perspective of social equity, unemployment rate, and psychology, starting from reality. This article argues that the advancement of AI technology may not necessarily bring leisure to everyone, but rather may reduce the leisure time of some populations. To solve this problem, the government and enterprises must intervene in advance to clarify the purpose of AI development, so that technology can better improve the well-being of all humanity.

Experiencing Pain Invalidation is Associated with Under-Reporting of Pain: A Social Psychological Perspective on Acute Pain Communication

Pain invalidation involves the dismissal or lack of understanding of another’s pain, undermining their subjective experience. Frequent exposure to invalidation negatively impacts mental and physical health as well as pain-related behaviors, potentially leading people to conceal their pain from others in the future and/or withdraw from potential sources of support. It is therefore possible that experiencing pain invalidation may also impact pain-reporting behavior in clinical settings. Across 2 separate samples of emerging adults, we examined whether exposure to invalidation of one’s pain was associated with cognizant modulation of one’s subjective acute pain ratings within routine medical and dental settings. Drawing upon social psychological theories of impression management and self-presentation, we hypothesized that exposure to pain invalidation would be associated with the under-rating of one’s pain. In Study 1, previous experiences of invalidation were associated with under-rating of one’s pain when visiting the doctor and the dentist. Study 2 found that invalidation from family and medical professionals—but not from friends—was associated with under-rating pain in both settings. Findings provide further evidence for the harmful effects of pain invalidation, particularly for emerging adults, as the dismissal of one’s subjective experience may sow self-doubt while reinforcing cultural stigmas against pain, leading to alterations in pain communication that ultimately creates barriers to efficacious clinical treatment and care and increase pain-related suffering. PerspectivePain invalidation imparts harm to those who already suffer from pain, be it mentally, physically, and/or behaviorally. We show that people who have encountered invalidation are more likely to under-rate their pain when seeking care, impeding assessment and treatment, and further highlighting the importance of clinical validation of pain experiences.

AbstractPurpose – This research aims to examine the influence of gender differences and religiosity on tax evasion. The large number of cases of tax evasion that still occur today, causing huge losses to the state, has made researchers interested in researching more deeply and developing previous research. This research is different from previous research in that previous research tended to focus on economic and legal aspects, and few studied non-economic aspects of tax evasion. This research will examine tax evasion behavior more deeply from the perspective of intrinsic factors and focus on a social-psychological perspective, namely gender and religiosity. Design/methodology/approach – This research was designed as quasi-experimental research using a quantitative approach. This research took samples from Bachelor of Accounting students from Padang State University, Andalas University and Bung Hatta University. Findings – The findings from this research are that there is a gender influence on tax avoidance behavior, where men are more likely to engage in tax avoidance than women. Religiosity also influences tax avoidance behavior. Individuals with low religiosity tend to avoid taxes compared to those with high religiosity. There is an interaction effect of gender and religiosity on tax evasion behavior, where men with high religiosity are more likely to commit tax evasion than women.Originality/value – This research is different from previous research in that previous research tended to focus on economic and legal aspects, while few studied non-economic aspects of tax evasion. This research will examine tax evasion behavior more deeply from the perspective of intrinsic factors and focus on a social-psychological perspective, namely gender and religiosity. Researchers will test the social psychological factors of gender because gender is a social psychological factor, where gender is an interesting demographic factor and has been widely researched from various perspectives. Gender is also one of the social psychological factors that is believed to be successful in influencing someone to commit tax evasion. Apart from gender, there is also the religiosity factor, where religiosity is a social psychological factor based on attitudes and perceptions. The existence of attitudes and perceptions that justify tax evasion on moral grounds comes from the starting point of religion or religiosity. There is still a dearth of research examining the relationship between these two variables. Moreover, most investigations have mainly focused on developed countries. Only a few studies have assessed the relationship between religiosity and attitudes toward tax evasion. This religiosity research also measures the Krauss and Hamzah indicators to cover the weaknesses of the Warthington indicators used by previous researchers.Research limitations/implications – The research only focuses on three universities in the city of Padang, so it can reduce the ability to generalize the findings so that further research can expand or use a direct sample of taxpayers. An Analysis of the Movie Pride and Prejudice from the Perspective of Social Psychology and Sociology

Social psychology is closely related to popular life; therefore, there are various applications of theories related to social psychology in many media. The film Pride and Prejudice has been widely concerned and discussed by the public since its book became a masterpiece across the world. This paper discusses how several specific social psychology theories and assumptions were put forward and used in the development of the heroine's plot. It analyzes the view of marriage from the perspective of sociology, in order to find out how to explain some of the role's behaviors from the perspective of social psychology. It uses the methodology of media analysis to draw a conclusion that there are mainly 3 theories and hypothesis related to social psychology which are shown in the characters behavior: Maslows Hierarchy Theory, Framing& Agenda Setting Theory, and The Contact Hypothesis. Furthermore, the author of the movie claims her advocation of marriage which is to pursue the combination of true love and economic situation in marriage.

Confronting school violence in Brazil: insights from social psychology for safer educational environments

School violence is a complex issue with significant implications for students, educators, and society as a whole. This article provides a comprehensive overview of the multifaceted nature of school violence in Brazil and proposes a multidimensional approach to address this pressing problem. Drawing upon social psychology and current empirical research, the paper explores the role of individual, interpersonal, and contextual factors in the occurrence of school violence.
