Removal, accumulation, and micro-ecosystem impacts of typical POPs in bioretention systems with different media: A runoff infiltration study

Bioretention systems prove effective in purifying common persistent organic pollutants (POPs) found in urban rainfall runoff. However, the response process of the microecosystem in the media becomes unclear when POPs accumulate in bioretention systems. In this study, we constructed bioretention systems and conducted simulated rainfall tests to elucidate the evolution of micro-ecosystems within the media under typical POPs pollution. The results showed all POPs in runoff were effectively removed by surface adsorption in different media, with load reduction rates of >85 % for PCBs and OCPs and > 80 % for PAHs. Bioretention soil media (BSM) + water treatment residuals (WTR) media exhibited greater stability in response to POPs contamination compared to BSM and pure soil (PS) media. POPs contamination significantly impacted the microecology of the media, reducing the number of microbial species by >52.6 % and reducing diversity by >27.6 % at the peak of their accumulation. Enzyme activities were significantly inhibited, with reductions ranging from 44.42 % to 60.33 %. Meanwhile, in terms of ecological functions, the metabolism of exogenous carbon sources significantly increased (p < 0.05), while nitrogen and sulfur cycling processes were suppressed. Microbial diversity and enzyme activities showed some recovery during the dissipation of POPs but did not reach the level observed before the experiment. Dominant bacterial species and abundance changed significantly during the experiment. Proteobacteria were suppressed, but remained the dominant phylum (all relative abundances >41 %). Bacteroidota, Firmicutes, and Actinobacteria adapted well to the contamination. Pseudomonas, a typical POPs-degrading bacterium, displayed a positive correlation between its relative abundance and POPs levels (mean > 10 %). Additionally, POPs and media properties, including TN and pH, are crucial factors that collectively shape the microbial community. This study provides new insights into the impacts of POPs contamination on the microbial community of the media, which can improve media design and operation efficiency.

Insight into the photodegradation of o,p'-dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane in a broad spectrum of irradiation light

Photolysis is the main pathway for the degradation of persistent organic pollutants (POPs). Most investigations, however, have been limited to the ultraviolet or visible region, and the reaction mechanism of infrared (IR) light is still unclear. In this study, the photodegradation of o,p'-dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethanes (o,p'-DDT) on the silica (SiO2)/air interface under different irradiation light sources was systematically investigated. Interestingly, for the first time, effective degradation of o,p'-DDT under IR light irradiation was observed, which was ascribed to the anti-Stokes Raman scattering process of SiO2. Moreover, desert sands could also serve as a vector for the photodegradation of o,p'-DDT. The lower removal efficiency of desert sands compared to pure SiO2 was a combined effect of differences in Fe3+ component and SiO2 content. It is worth noting that direct photodegradation plays a dominant role in the photodegradation of o,p'-DDT on SiO2. Besides, indirect photodegradation resulted mainly from •OH (25.0%), O2•− (6.9%), and 1O2 (5.6%) generated in the reaction system. In addition to hydroxylation and dechlorination products, the formation of four novel silicon-based products was observed, which resulted from the direct reaction of silyl radicals with o,p'-DDT. This study revealed that the specific Raman scattering effect of SiO2 played a vital role in the self-purification process of POPs upon SiO2-based environmental matrices. The light-mediated decontamination system upon SiO2 constructed in this study could provide critical information for addressing POPs contamination on sands.

Centurial deposition records of polychlorinated biphenyls and organochlorine pesticides in sediment cores from a plateau deep-water lake of China: Significance of anthropogenic impacts, transformation signals and ecological risks revealed by full congener analysis

Lake Fuxian, the largest deep freshwater lake in China, has been suffering from increasing ecological and environmental issues along with the rapid urbanization and industrialization in the past 40 years. To better understand the historical pollution of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in Lake Fuxian, comprehensive analyses of 209 polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) congeners and 20 organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) were conducted in two intact sediment cores (Core V1 and Core V2). The total mass concentrations of PCBs ranged from 7.60 to 31.47 ng/g (dry weight basis) and 5.55 to 28.90 ng/g during the period of 1908–2019 in Core V1 and 1924–2019 in Core V2, respectively. PCBs exhibited a consecutive increasing trend from 1940s to 2019 in Core V1. The temporal trend of PCBs in Core V2 basically matched to the history of PCB usage and prohibition in China (increasing from 1940s to mid-1960s, a remarkable drop in mid-1970s, and then increasing until 2019). Moreover, low-chlorinated PCBs were dominant among PCB homologues. Mono-CBs, di-CBs, tri-CBs and tetra-CBs accounted for 86.71 %–98.57 % in sediment segments. The PCB sources included unintentional emission and atmospheric deposition, as well as biological transformation. The total mass concentrations of OCPs ranged from 0.74 to 3.82 ng/g in Core V1 and 0.35 to 2.23 ng/g in Core V2, respectively. Similar trend was observed in the two sediment cores with peaks in the early 1990s. The predominant OCPs were γ-hexachlorohexane (γ-HCHs), dieldrin and p,p′-DDD. The ecological risks posed by PCBs and p-p′-DDD in Lake Fuxian were relatively low. In contrast, dieldrin might pose a potential threat to exposed organisms and apparently adverse ecological effects were caused by γ-HCH. This study will provide important baseline information on historical POPs contamination of Lake Fuxian.

Persistent Organic Pollutants in Environment and Human Health

Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are often referred to as "silent killers" due to their bio accumulative and long-term persistence. These can be found in every living thing, from plants to animals to people. These are to culprits for several environmental and human health problems. POPs are a leading cause of diabetes, obesity, endocrine disruption, cancer, cardiovascular disease, reproductive problems, and environmental damage. POP pollution and dangers are of concern to scientists, governments, and NGOs alike. This article reviews the most recent findings about the effects of POP contamination on human health and the natural environment.

Geochemistry and metagenomics analyses of bacterial community structure in selected waste dumpsites in Lagos Metropolis, Nigeria

Dumpsites are reservoirs of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and heavy metals (HMs), constituting environmental hazards to humanity. Autochthonous microorganisms in dumpsites exhibit various degrees of responses to contaminants. Unfortunately, there is a dearth of information on the types and concentration of pollutants and the array of microorganisms in these dumpsites which may play important roles in the metabolism of such pollutants or other community processes. Therefore, determining the microbial community structure in such contaminated sites across a municipality is essential for profiling the taxa that would serve as consensus degraders of the pollutants. In this study, soil samples from three dumpsites (Cele, CS; Solous, SS; and Computer Village, CVS) were characterized for geochemical properties using GC-MS, MP-AES, and other analytical protocols, while the dynamics of bacterial communities were evaluated based on their 16S rRNA gene barcodes. A significant difference in the bacterial communities was observed among the dumpsites in relation to the extent of pollution caused by POPs and HMs. CVS, with the highest HM contamination, was rich in Actinobacteria (41.7%) and Acidobacteria (10.2%), in contrast to CS and SS. Proteobacteria (34.1%) and Firmicutes (20%) were the dominant phyla in CS (highest POP contamination), while Bacteroidetes (45.5%) and Proteobacteria (39.9%) were dominant in SS soil. Bacillus was the dominant genus in the most polluted dumpsite. Canonical correspondence analysis revealed that polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and HMs shaped the structure of the bacterial operational taxonomic units (OTUs) in the most polluted dumpsite. Out of a total of 706 OTUs, 628 OTUs exhibited a significant correlation (&amp;gt;50%) with benzo(b)fluoranthene, azobenzene, dibenzofurans, pyrene, dibenzo(a,l)pyrene, Cu, and Zn. In particular, Proteobacteria (Achromobacter sp. and Serratia sp.), Bacteroidetes (Zhouia sp.), and Firmicutes (Bacillus sp.) were suggested to be pivotal to the ecophysiology of dumpsite soils contaminated with POPs and HMs. The results generally underscored the importance of metagenomic and physicochemical analyses of polluted systems in enabling correlations for useful prediction of drivers of such ecosystems. This will further improve our understanding of the metabolic potential and adaptation of organisms in such systems.

Heavy metal and persistent organic pollutant profile of sediments from marine protected areas: the northern Persian Gulf.

Marine protected areas (MPAs) are one of the policy tools to support marine biodiversity conservation and sustainable use of marine resources. The distribution, sources, and ecological risk assessment of persistent organic pollutants (POPs), including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAHs), total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and heavy metals (HMs) in sediments of MPAs in the northern Persian Gulf, were evaluated for the first time in this study. The Σ16PAHs ranged from 4.65 to 20.86 μg/kg dry weight (dw). The molecular ratios and ring's pattern of PAHs suggested a mixed origin with a predominance of pyrogenic sources. The TPH concentration varied from 5.21 to 17.90 μg/g dw. Ecological risk assessment suggested that sediment samples in Bushehr Province's MPAs can be categorized as medium risk. The mean concentration of ∑18PCB was 0.345-0.419 ng/g dw, and the main components correspond to PCB-77, PCB-105, PCB-81, PCB-101, and PCB-114. The mean concentration of As, Co, Cr, Ni, V, Mg, Pb, Zn, Cu, Al, and Fe varied from 4.79 to 9.69, 2-12, 39-142, 18-90, 15-58, 184-425, 7-45.9, 6-42.4, 4-20 μg/g dw, 0.75-4.12%, and 0.35-1.62%, respectively. Multivariate analysis, such as principal component analysis (PCA) and cluster analysis (CA), coupled with correlation coefficient analysis, was used to analyze the analytical data and to identify possible pollution sources. The results of this study provided the background information on the extent of POP contamination in the sediment and highlighted the need to further control pollution in MPAs.

Differential gene expression and developmental pathologies associated with persistent organic pollutants in sentinel fish in Troutman Lake, Sivuqaq, Alaska

Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are lipophilic compounds that bioaccumulate in animals and biomagnify within food webs. Many POPs are endocrine disrupting compounds that impact vertebrate development. POPs accumulate in the Arctic via global distillation and thereby impact high trophic level vertebrates as well as people who live a subsistence lifestyle. The Arctic also contains thousands of point sources of pollution, such as formerly used defense (FUD) sites. Sivuqaq (St. Lawrence Island), Alaska was used by the U.S. military during the Cold War and FUD sites on the island remain point sources of POP contamination. We examined the effects of POP exposure on ninespine stickleback (Pungitius pungitius) collected from Troutman Lake in the village of Gambell as a model for human exposure and disease. During the Cold War, Troutman Lake was used as a dump site by the U.S. military. We found that PCB concentrations in stickleback exceeded the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's guideline for unlimited consumption despite these fish being low trophic level organisms. We examined effects at three levels of biological organization: gene expression, endocrinology, and histomorphology. We found that ninespine stickleback from Troutman Lake exhibited suppressed gonadal development compared to threespine stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) studied elsewhere. Troutman Lake stickleback also displayed two distinct hepatic phenotypes, one with lipid accumulation and one with glycogen-type vacuolation. We compared the transcriptomic profiles of these liver phenotypes using RNA sequencing and found significant upregulation of genes involved in ribosomal and metabolic pathways in the lipid accumulation group. Additionally, stickleback displaying liver lipid accumulation had significantly fewer thyroid follicles than the vacuolated phenotype. Our study and previous work highlight health concerns for people and wildlife due to pollution hotspots in the Arctic, and the need for health-protective remediation.

Effect of Persistent Organic Pollutants on Human Health in South Korea: A Review of the Reported Diseases

Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) usually originate from human activities and have been released into the environment for several decades. They are highly resistant to natural decomposition and can accumulate in an organism’s tissues and in all environmental components. Due to their unique characteristics, they have an ability to bio-magnify and bio-accumulate in animals, through the food chain and via inhalation, severely endangering the health of people. As reported, the exposure of humans to POPs causes various health problems such as cancers, diabetes, birth defects, endocrine disruption, cardiovascular diseases and dysfunctional immune and reproductive systems. The residents of South Korea are likely to face a high risk of diseases because of the existence of POPs in the environment. For instance, South Korea’s atmosphere has been reported as a hotspot for POP pollution. Besides, South Koreans’ high amount of seafood consumption is considered another source of POPs. Therefore, this article reviews the status of POP contamination in food and the health impact of POPs in South Korea. Based on the findings, the most-reported diseases were obesity and diabetes, which positively correlated to age, food habits, body index, and level of exposure to POPs. In addition, cancer and metabolic diseases are at an alarming level. Therefore, the public health impacts of POPs need continuous assessment in South Korea over the next decade.

A retrospective investigation of feather corticosterone in a highly contaminated white-tailed eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla) population

Exposure to persistent organic pollutants (POPs), such as organochlorines (OCs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), is associated with adverse health effects in wildlife. Many POPs have been banned and consequently their environmental concentrations have declined. To assess both temporal trends of POPs and their detrimental impacts, raptors are extensively used as biomonitors due to their high food web position and high contaminant levels. White-tailed eagles (WTEs; Haliaeetus albicilla) in the Baltic ecosystem represent a sentinel species of environmental pollution, as they have suffered population declines due to reproductive failure caused by severe exposure to dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) during the 1960s through 1980s. However, there is a lack of long-term studies that cover a wide range of environmental contaminants and their effects at the individual level. In this study, we used 135 pooled samples of shed body feathers collected in 1968–2012 from breeding WTE pairs in Sweden. Feathers constitute a temporal archive for substances incorporated into the feather during growth, including corticosterone, which is the primary avian glucocorticoid and a stress-associated hormone. Here, we analysed the WTE feather pools to investigate annual variations in feather corticosterone (fCORT), POPs (OCs and PBDEs), and stable carbon and nitrogen isotopes (SIs; dietary proxies). We examined whether the expected fluctuations in POPs affected fCORT (8–94 pg. mm−1) in the WTE pairs. Despite clear temporal declining trends in POP concentrations (p < 0.01), we found no significant associations between fCORT and POPs or SIs (p > 0.05 in all cases). Our results do not support fCORT as a relevant biomarker of contaminant-mediated effects in WTEs despite studying a highly contaminated population. However, although not detecting a relationship between fCORT, POP contamination and diet, fCORT represents a non-destructive and retrospective assessment of long-term stress physiology in wild raptors otherwise not readily available.

Food Safety: The contamination of persistent organic pollutants in some food products

Food and nutrient are complex substances that should regulate a normal routine of human life, protest adverse effects of the external and internal environment, and prevent diseases and promote health. Food safety includes the safety issue of food products to ensure that the population is constantly accessible to safe, healthy, and nutritious foods, while food product safety refers to the provision of foods to the population that is not contaminated. Everyone has the right to be provided with a safe and nutritious diet, and when product safety is lost, it reduces the child's learning and the adult’s working productivity. It is considered that food safety is established well when everyone is satisfied with the food needed to live a healthy lifestyle. Food pollution occurs when it contains pollutants that can adversely affect the health of the population. Pollutants in the food may occur from unintentional production or during the various steps of packaging, transportation, or storage, and environmental pollution affects adversely the quality of foods and pose a risk to human health. One of these pollutants is persistent organic pollutants (POPs) that are soluble in oil, ability to bioaccumulate, persist in the environment, and pose a risk of causing adverse effects to humans and living organisms. In the present study, a total of 24 samples including mutton, beef, horse meat, fish and chicken, dairy products, or eggs that are domestic and imported food products were collected, pre-treated, and sent to the expert laboratories in Sweden and Germany. The occurrences, relative abundances, and distribution of 26 POPs listed in either Annex A, B, or C of the Stockholm Convention were analyzed in food samples from Mongolia. The effect of military conflict zone in the Middle East on atmospheric persistent organic pollutant contamination in its north

This study aimed to investigate long-range atmospheric transport of selected POPs released due to the effects of military conflicts in regions to the south of Turkey's borders. Ten locations were selected to deploy passive air samplers at varying distances to the border on a southeast-west transect of the country, proximity-grouped as close, middle, and far. Sampling campaign included winter and transition months when desert dust transport events occur. Hypothesis of the study was that a decreasing trend would be observed with increasing distance to the border. Group comparisons based on statistical testing showed that PBDE-183, Σ45PCB, and dieldrin in winter; PBDE-28, PBDE-99, PBDE-154, p,p′-DDE, Σ14PBDE, and Σ25OCP in the transition period; and PBDE-28, PBDE-85, PBDE-99, PBDE-154, PBDE-190, PCB-52, Σ45PCB, p,p′-DDE, and Σ25OCP over the whole campaign had a decreasing trend on the transect. An analysis of concentration ratio to the background showed that long-range atmospheric transport impacted the study sites, especially those of close group in comparison to the local sources. Back-trajectory analyses indicated that there was transport from the conflict areas to sites in the close-proximity group, while farther sampling locations mostly received air masses from Europe, Russia, and former Soviet Union countries, followed by North Africa, rather than the military conflict areas. In consequence, decrease in concentrations with distance and its relation to molecular weight through proportions, diagnostic ratios, analysis of concentration ratio to the background, and back-trajectory analyses support the effect of transport from the military-conflict area to its north.

Occurrence of OCPs & PCBs and their effects on multitrophic biological communities in riparian groundwater of the Beiluo River, China

Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) may exert adverse effects on human and ecosystem health. However, as an ecologically fragile zone with strong interaction between river and groundwater, the POPs pollution in the riparian zone has received little attention. The goal of this research is to examine the concentrations, spatial distribution, potential ecological risks, and biological effects of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in the riparian groundwater of the Beiluo River, China. The results showed that the pollution level and ecological risk of OCPs in riparian groundwater of the Beiluo River were higher than PCBs. The presence of PCBs (Penta-CBs, Hexa-CBs) and CHLs, respectively, may have reduced the richness of bacteria (Firmicutes) and fungi (Ascomycota). Furthermore, the richness and Shannon’s diversity index of algae (Chrysophyceae and Bacillariophyta) decreased, which could be linked to the presence of OCPs (DDTs, CHLs, DRINs), and PCBs (Penta-CBs, Hepta-CBs), while for metazoans (Arthropoda) the tendency was reversed, presumably as a result of SULPHs pollution. In the network analysis, core species belonging to bacteria (Proteobacteria), fungi (Ascomycota), and algae (Bacillariophyta) played essential roles in maintaining community function. Burkholderiaceae and Bradyrhizobium can be considered biological indicators of PCBs pollution in the Beiluo River. Note that the core species of interaction network, playing a fundamental role in community interactions, are strongly affected by POPs pollutants. This work provides insights into the functions of multitrophic biological communities in maintaining the stability of riparian ecosystems through the response of core species to riparian groundwater POPs contamination.

Status, distribution, source, and risk of polychlorinated biphenyl levels in soils of five cities from the Hexi Corridor, Northwest China

Few studies have been performed on the persistent organic pollutant contamination in soil from the plateau and remote areas, particularly the mid-latitude arid and semi-arid regions of Northwest China. The occurrence, spatial distribution, source, and potential risk of 12 polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were investigated in soil collected from five Hexi Corridor cities in Northwest China. All of the PCBs were detected individually in the soil samples. The concentration of Σ12PCBs in the Hexi Corridor ranged from 2.0 to 148.5ng/g, with an average of 21.3ng/g. The tetra-CBs and hexa-CBs were the dominant PCB components in the soil. Higher PCB levels were found in the industrial city of Jiuquan, and the fewest PCBs were detected at Jinchang. Source analysis by principal component analysis showed that the dominant sources of PCBs were automobile exhaust, paint additives, insulation materials, and other industrial products. The carcinogenic health risk of PCBs in the Hexi Corridor soil was within acceptable levels, but the exposure risk of PCBs in soil for children was higher than that for adults.

Atmospheric deposition contributed mostly to organophosphorus flame retardant entering into the Bohai Sea, China

Atmospheric emission sources of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in China's eastern seaboard regions cause heavy POP contamination in the Bohai Sea (BS), China. Because many rivers are emptying into the BS, terrestrial runoff has been considered a dominant pathway of POPs onto the BS. Here, we explored the contribution of atmospheric transport and terrestrial runoff to organophosphorus flame retardants (OPFRs) to the BS by using an atmospheric transport model and a terrestrial runoff model. We examined the sensitivity and response of OPFR in the BS seawater to its atmospheric transport, deposition, and riverine discharge via terrestrial runoff. Both terrestrial runoff and atmospheric transport model simulations reveal that the atmospheric transport and deposition, including dry, wet, and diffusive gaseous deposition, dominate OPFR input into the BS. The total OPFR fluxes entering the BS via the atmospheric pathway and riverine input were 70.4 and 2.8t/yr in 2013, respectively.

Temporal trends of persistent organic pollutant contamination in Franciscana dolphins from the Southwestern Atlantic

Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) were analyzed in 136 blubber samples of Franciscana dolphins from Brazil (Pontoporia blainvillei), which is the most threatened dolphin in the Southwestern Atlantic. The dolphins were caught by the fishery fleet and collected from 2000 to 2018 in three regions of São Paulo state: northern São Paulo (SPN), central São Paulo (SPC), and southern São Paulo (SPS). The POPs analyzed in this study were polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDTs), Mirex, hexachlorobenzene (HCB), chlordane compounds (CHLs), hexachlorocyclohexane isomers (HCHs), and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs). The concentrations ranged from 36 to 7200 ng g−1 lipid weight (lw) and 113–42200 ng g−1 lw for predominant compounds DDTs and PCBs, respectively. Similar profiles of PCB congeners were observed with a predominance of hexachlorinated compounds, representing approximately 50% of the total PCB amount; the highest PCB concentrations were observed from Baixada Santista (SPC) proximate to a highly urbanized and industrial coastal area. Significant differences were observed between the sexes and maturity of dolphins, mainly for PCBs, DDTs, and Mirex. In general, POPs other than HCB in Franciscana dolphins showed downward temporal trends, matching the regulatory periods for restricting and/or banning these compounds. Although POP concentrations are declining, PCB levels remain high in small dolphins, suggesting adverse health effects on Franciscanas. As organic contaminants are one of the numerous threats Franciscanas have been vulnerable to along the Brazilian coast, we recommend monitoring POPs levels every five years to check for declining (or stabilizing) trends.

New and legacy persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in breeding seabirds from the East Antarctic

Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are pervasive and a significant threat to the environment worldwide. Yet, reports of POP levels in Antarctic seabirds based on blood are scarce, resulting in significant geographical gaps. Blood concentrations offer a snapshot of contamination within live populations, and have been used widely for Arctic and Northern Hemisphere seabird species but less so in Antarctica. This paper presents levels of legacy POPs (polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs)) and novel brominated flame retardants (NBFRs) in the blood of five Antarctic seabird species breeding within Prydz Bay, East Antarctica. Legacy PCBs and OCPs were detected in all species sampled, with Adélie penguins showing comparatively high ∑PCB levels (61.1 ± 87.6 ng/g wet weight (ww)) compared to the four species of flying seabirds except the snow petrel (22.5 ± 15.5 ng/g ww), highlighting that legacy POPs are still present within Antarctic wildlife despite decades-long bans. Both PBDEs and NBFRs were detected in trace levels for all species and hexabromobenzene (HBB) was quantified in cape petrels (0.3 ± 0.2 ng/g ww) and snow petrels (0.2 ± 0.1 ng/g ww), comparable to concentrations found in Arctic seabirds. These results fill a significant data gap within the Antarctic region for POPs studies, representing a crucial step forward assessing the fate and impact of legacy POPs contamination in the Antarctic environment.

Telomere length in relation to persistent organic pollutant exposure in white-tailed eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla) nestlings from Sweden sampled in 1995–2013

Telomeres are used as biomarkers of vertebrate health because of the link between their length, lifespan, and survival. Exposure to environmental stressors appears to alter telomere dynamics, but little is known about telomere length and persistent organic pollutant (POP) exposure in wildlife. The white-tailed eagle (WTE; Haliaeetus albicilla) is an avian top predator that accumulates high levels of POPs and may subsequently suffer adverse health effects. Here we study the Baltic WTE population that is well documented to have been exposed to large contaminant burdens, thereby making it a promising candidate species for analyzing pollutant-mediated effects on telomeres. We investigated telomere lengths in WTE nestlings (n = 168) over 19 years and examined legacy POP concentrations (organochlorines and polybrominated diphenyl ethers) in whole blood and serum as potential drivers of differences in telomere length. Although we detected significant year-to-year variations in telomere lengths among the WTE nestlings, telomere lengths did not correlate with any of the investigated POP concentrations of several classes. Given that telomere lengths did not associate with POP contamination in the Baltic WTE nestlings, we propose that other environmental and biological factors, which likely fluctuate on a year-to-year basis, could be more important drivers of telomere lengths in this population.

An overview of technologies suitable for handling Indonesian agricultural soils contaminated with persistent organic pollutants

Since Indonesia have signed and ratified Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) in 2009, the country must make efforts to manage POPs appropriately. A number of pollution evident of POPs has occurred in Indonesia, either air, soil or water. Agricultural soils are not excluded from POPs pollution as the result of halogenated pesticide uses or other unidentified sources. Contamination of POPs to humans have been detected, as well as indicated potential exposure of POPs to humans. Based-catalyzed decomposition is a method that can be used to decompose or decontaminate POPs. Limestone can be processed to produce calcium-based catalyst that can apply for POPs decomposition. Indonesia is a country rich in limestone natural resources to produce calcium. However, calcium is inferior to sodium or potassium in reactivity for the dehalogenation of POPs. Thus, more evaluation is needed in order for synthesizing proper and economical calcium-based catalyst to alleviate POPs pollution in Indonesia.

Waste streams as current sources of persistent organic pollutants and organophosphate esters in Africa - a critical review

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, chlorinated paraffins, brominated flame retardants, polychlorinated biphenyls and mirex are regulated under the United Nations Environment Programme’s (UNEP’s) Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) intended for the eradication of hazardous contaminants in the environment. There is also a major concern for organophosphate esters and specific alternative or novel brominated flame retardants. To date, no evidence exists that major producers of these chemicals occur on the African continent. They are understood to find their way into African environments through the import of commercial products, in particular products with second-hand value and short lifespans, which may enter waste streams in a relatively shorter period. To further understand the current levels of these selected contaminants in African waste streams, existing documents capturing various African waste stream compartments for the above outlined targeted contaminants were gathered from an exhaustive literature review. Key factors influencing the transfer of contaminants from waste or elevated concentrations of contaminants in African waste streams are associated with the nature and/or sources of contaminants, volume of contaminants or waste in relation to the capacity of treatment plants/landfills, condition or age of treatment plants/landfill geomembrane liner, model adopted for contaminants removal and treatment procedures for collected sludges or leachates. Evidence from the selected studies indicates substantial POP contamination in African landfills and dumpsites, wastewater effluents/sludge and human/biological samples around dumpsites and landfills. Unfortunately, the continent has inadequate infrastructural capacity to adequately handle POP in the waste streams. This review provides recommendations and suggestions for future studies.

Contamination, spatial distribution, and source contribution of persistent organic pollutants in the soil of Guiyang city, China: a case study.

The contamination of persistent organic pollutants (POPs), including dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT), hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH), and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH), is the most studied environmental issue. In 2020, a total of sixty soil samples collected from ten locations in Guiyang were analyzed to assess the presence of four DDTs and HCHs and sixteen PAHs. The concentrations of total DDTs, total HCHs and Σ16PAHs in the soil were between 0.26 and 12.76, 0.23 and 51.80μg/kg, and 10.02 and 1708.86μg/kg, respectively. The mean and median concentrations of total DDTs, total HCHs and Σ16PAHs in the soil were 1.04 and 0.26μg/kg, 4.32 and 0.23μg/kg, 139.14 and 98.98μg/kg, respectively. p,p'-DDT, p,p'-DDD and γ-HCH the dominant organochloride pollutants in the soil, while 4-ring PAHs were the dominant PAHs, occupying 41.1-53.6% of the total PAHs in the soil. The highest levels of PAHs in the soil were observed in areas of Guiyang with relatively larger population densities and more developed heave industries. Various diagnostic tools were used to identify the potential sources of the POPs in the soil. The data indicated that DDTs and HCHs were from past and recent common inputs and that mixtures of several combustion activities (biomass, coal and petroleum combustion, diesel, gasoline, and vehicular emissions) were the major sources of PAHs in the Guiyang soil. The results provide information for the assessment of the extent of POP pollution in the Guiyang soil and can help authorities establish environmental protection regulations and soil remediation techniques.
