Performance measurement in product development process (PDP): literature review and gaps for further research

Goal: this paper performs a literature review to identify and analyze the main themes related to PDP performance measurement and presents the gaps for further exploration.
 Design / Methodology / Approach: this paper searches the main bases of academic data in order to find scientific papers related to PDP performance measurement and classify them on five main themes: design performance; human resources; knowledge resources; financial performance, and literature review.
 Results: the results show that more than fifty percent of the papers are associated with knowledge resource issues and the principal gaps to be explored are associated with design performance, human resources, financial performance and literature review.
 Limitations of the investigation: the main limitation is related to the bases of academic data. Additional papers available on different bases can lead to different results. 
 Practical implications: this paper intends to make a contribution to academia and practitioners as it shows gaps on PDP performance measurement research that can be better explored.
 Originality / Value: to the best of the authors’ knowledge, there is no study that evaluates a literature review for PDP performance measurement. This work contributes to the literature by presenting the directions for further PDP performance measurement research.

A lattice-based approach for navigating design configuration spaces

Design configurations, such as Bills of Materials (BoMs), are indispensable parts of any product development process and integral to the design descriptions stored in proprietary Computer Aided Design and Product Lifecycle Management systems. Engineers use BoMs and other design configurations as lenses to repurpose design descriptions for specific purposes. For this reason, multiple BoMs typically occur in any given product development process. For example, an engineering BoM may be used to define a configuration that best supports a design activity whereas a manufacturing BoM may be used to define the configuration of parts that best supports a manufacturing process. Current practice for the definition of BoMs involves the use of indented parts lists and dendograms that are prone to error because it is easy to create discrepancies across BoMs that, in essence, are defined through collections of part identifiers such as names and part numbers. Such errors have a significant detrimental effect on the performance of product development processes by creating the need for rework, adding costs and increasing time to market.This paper introduces a design description capability that ensures consistency across BoMs for a given design. A boolean hypercube lattice is used to define a design configuration space that includes all possible configurations for a given design description. Valid operations within the space are governed by the mathematics of hypercube lattices. The design description capability is demonstrated through an early engineering design configuration software tool that offers significant benefits by ensuring consistency across the BoMs for a given design. The software uses and generates design descriptions that are exported from and imported to commercially available design systems through a standard (ISO 10303-214) interface format. In this way, potential for early impact on industry practice is high.

Iteration-based Performance Measurement in the Fuzzy Front End of PDPs

Iterations are an inherent phenomenon in product development processes (PDPs), especially in its fuzzy front end (FFE), and a crucial concept in coached ideation workshops. Small- and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) perceive such workshops as promising means for developing new products and enhancing their innovation capability. This raises the research questions of (1) “how to measure the performance of PDPs in its FFE?” and (2) “Which role do iterations play for the performance measurement of PDPs in its FFE?” Based on expert-interviews after each iteration in 14 workshops, we compare the approaches of (1) statement coding and (2) direct ratings according to a reflection guideline. By correlating the data with the workshop outcome, we identify the guideline as powerful means for quantifying the PDP performance in its FFE.

A TOOL FOR PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT PERFORMANCE MONITORING (PDPM) FOR ALIGNMENT WITH COMPETITIVE PRIORITIES

Product Development Process (PDP) has been recognized as a source of competitive profits, and thus, it has received increasing attention. The existing methods for monitoring PDP performance, however, are either cumbersome or fail to connect the competitive priorities to the performance management process. Accordingly, in this paper, a model to evaluate PDP performance is considered as a multi-criteria decision-making problem; and a solution method, based on DEMATEL and ANP, is proposed. The evaluation criteria set was developed using the concept of competitive priorities, and the overall model was applied to an actual data set from a group of machine manufacturers in Turkey. The use scenarios for the model are also discussed.

Análise das práticas de gestão PDP em empresas de um polo industrial de revestimento cerâmico

O artigo analisa a gestão do processo de desenvolvimento de produtos (PDP) em uma amostra de empresas de revestimento cerâmico do Polo de Santa Gertrudes-SP, focando as práticas adotadas e os problemas dessa gestão. Realizou-se uma pesquisa de levantamento (survey), por meio de visitas e entrevistas em 20 de um universo de 36 empresas, de diferentes portes, sediadas no polo, seguida da compilação e análise estatística dos dados. As análises de grupo e de correlação apontaram a existência de dois grupos distintos de empresas com relação às características gerais diferenciados principalmente com relação à formalização das atividades do PDP. Observou-se também que, no geral, as empresas são pouco estruturadas com relação à gestão do PDP, utilizam poucas ferramentas de apoio a essa gestão e para o desenvolvimento de novos produtos dependem tecnologicamente da capacidade de inovação dos fornecedores, principalmente dos produtores de esmaltes (colorifícios).

Improved process performance in new product development of optical communications manufacturing by the integration of DFSS and ANP

In the trend of increasingly fierce global competition of optical communications industries, design for Six Sigma (DFSS) provides a systematic management approach using tools, training, and measurement methods to achieve products, services, and process designs that meet customer expectations. Taking transnational optical communications original equipment manufacturer (OEM) as the research objects, this study applied IDEF0, analytical network process (ANP), performance matrix analysis, and system simulation to propose a management model, which integrates DFSS with the development processes of new products for improvement and reengineering. The proposed research analysis model can reduce new product development process time by 30.24%. The findings of this research can serve as reference for the introduction of new product development process performance improvements.

A integração do cliente no processo de desenvolvimento de produto: revisão bibliográfica sistemática e temas para pesquisa

Este artigo apresenta uma revisão bibliográfica sistemática e aponta direções de pesquisa para o tema integração do cliente (IC) no processo de desenvolvimento de produto. Esse tema é considerado relevante na bibliografia das áreas de marketing, qualidade, inovação tecnológica e estratégia competitiva por permitir às empresas conhecerem melhor as reais necessidades do mercado, contribuir para o desenvolvimento de produtos mais adequados ao mercado e usar o conhecimento acumulado pelos clientes. Foram levantados 72 artigos que abordam esse tema no período de 1980 a 2008. O interesse pelo tema, no meio acadêmico, tem aumentado significativamente desde 2002, o que se constata pelo aumento no número de artigos publicados e pela incorporação do tema a capítulos de livros sobre gestão de desenvolvimento de produto. Identificaram-se as seguintes dimensões que compreendem o tema e que predominam nas pesquisas relatadas nos artigos analisados: fundamentos para a integração do cliente no processo de desenvolvimento do produto, critérios para seleção de clientes, tipos de interação entre a empresa e seus clientes e benefícios obtidos com a integração do cliente (IC). Para futuras pesquisas, recomenda-se aprofundar, por meio de estudo de casos e de survey, a compreensão que as empresas têm sobre o tema, as práticas adotadas e as relações e sinergia entre as dimensões, bem como as relações de causa e efeito entre as práticas e o desempenho do processo de desenvolvimento de produto.

Investigating product development process reliability and robustness using simulation

This paper uses the design structure matrix to model and simulate the performance of product development processes. Although simulation is a powerful tool for analysing process performance, its ability is limited by the availability of accurate input information. Design structure matrix simulation requires process data that is hard to assess or estimate directly from development participants. In this paper, we propose a methodology that allows a more practical estimation of an important simulation input parameter: rework probability. Furthermore, we show how this assessment method (combined with simulation) allows managers to evaluate process improvement plans based on two resultant process measures: reliability and robustness. The method is illustrated with a real application from the automotive industry.

Using benchmarking to drive R&D improvement

Focuses on the R&D effectiveness index developed by PRTM, which, when combined with an in‐depth, qualitative assessment of skills and effectiveness, can provide an accurate measure of overall product development process performance. The index is defined as the ratio of new product profit to R&D costs. Describes how the R&D effectiveness index was used by PRTM for one of its clients to help it decide how to restructure its R&D organizations.
