Natural resources in the form of solar heat, can be used as an alternative to electricity generation by using a power plant tool in the form of solar panels. In certain areas there are still many who need a supply of electric power, for example in the Turun Aban Sungailiat Beach area, Bangka Belitung Islands Province. At that location there is no electric power supply at all, the fishermen at the Turun Aban Beach location often carry out the process of transporting catches at night conditions. Therefore, to meet their needs, these fishermen can use alternative power plants in the form of solar panels. This research examines the process of analyzing the performance of solar-powered power plants. The solar panel produces 115.28 watts of power in 1 day. The time required for charging the battery is 5.81 hours/day and the battery endurance time is 4.65 hours in 1 day.

Carbon dioxide capture in large-scale CCGT power plant from flue gases obtained from various fuel mixtures

In this study, the thermodynamic analysis of a combined cycle gas turbine integrated with post-combustion carbon capture and storage using the solvent method is performed. The syngas obtained from the gasification of sewage sludge is mixed with methane and nitrogen-rich natural gas fuels at different proportions, used in the gas turbine, and the properties of fuel and flue gases are analyzed. The flue gas obtained from the fuel mixture is passed through the post-combustion carbon capture and storage at various load conditions to assess the heat and electricity required for the carbon capture process. The solvent used for the carbon capture from flue gases enables CO2 capture with the high efficiency of 90%. With the calculated results, the load conditions of flue gas using fuel mixtures are identified, which reduces the heat and power demand of post-combustion carbon capture and storage and provides the possibility to achieve neutral emission. The impact of selected operating conditions of post-combustion carbon capture and storage on the CO2 emission reduction process and on the power plant performances is investigated. Considering the factors of electricity generation, energy efficiency, heat supply to the consumers, operating load of post-combustion carbon cap-ture and storage and CO2 emission, the 50% mixture of syngas with both fuels performs better. Also, the use of a mixture of 2-amino-2methyl-1-propanol and piperazine with reboiler duty 3.7 MJ/kgCO2 in post-combustion carbon capture and storage slightly enhanced the performance of the power plant compared to the use of monoethanolamine with reboiler duty 3.8 MJ/kgCO2.

Object of research: electrical power systems with renewable energy sources. Main results of research: an overview of the performance of power plants based on renewable energy sources around the world and an analysis of the economics of promising projects based on the use of renewable energy sources in Russia are provided. An analysis of statistical deviations over the past eight years was carried out. Object: to describe the state of electricity production based on renewable energy sources in the world and in Russia, to calculate the efficiency indicators of renewable energy sources.

Implementation of Solar PV Protection System in Indonesia: A Review

Conventional energy sources will run out if used continuously and damage the environment. Therefore, it is necessary to develop other energy sources that are safe, environmentally friendly, and inexhaustible known as renewable energy sources to meet energy needs in Indonesia. This article presents a review that discusses the protection of solar panels and PLTS. Solar panels are vulnerable to lightning strikes and other electrical disturbances, so an effective protection system is needed. This study uses a qualitative method through a literature study, reviewing various protection methods such as conventional and electrostatic lightning rods, good grounding systems, and overcurrent detection devices such as Solar Charge Controller (SCC) and Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT). In addition, battery protection with Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) and Low Voltage Disconnected (LVD) is also discussed. Using Arduino Uno, ESP 32, and PLC, automation approaches offer real-time monitoring and control solutions for solar power plant performance. Innovations in the lightning protection zone concept and minimal quantity measurement schemes enable more cost-effective design of protection systems without reducing the level of protection. The results show that these various protection methods can provide effective and efficient protection for solar power plants, enabling optimization of system function and safety. In conclusion, the protection systems reviewed in this study offer a sustainable solution to Indonesia's energy challenges by utilizing the maximum potential of solar energy. The potential for further research is presented in this article to develop more efficient and effective protection methods.

Modeling, assessment and characterization of soiling on PV Technologies. Toward a Better understanding of the Relation between dust deposition and performance losses

Soiling is a critical, site-specific challenge that affects the performance and economic viability of photovoltaic power plants. This study evaluates the effectiveness of an outdoor microscopy method under the specific climatic conditions and dust composition of the Mid-south region of Morocco. Semi-empirical models were developed to correlate the Soiling Coverage Index with losses in optical and electrical performance. Additionally, a comprehensive analysis of local dust, encompassing its chemical composition, morphology, and size distribution, was conducted. Results indicate quartz as the predominant mineral in Benguerir city’s dust particles, with diameters ranging from 0 μm to 26 μm. Additionally, following a 2-week exposure with no rainfall, a dust density of 2.5 g/m2 accumulated on the deployed glass coupons, resulting in a soiling ratio of 6.9 % and a relative transmittance loss of 15.19 %. The surface coverage index, as calculated by the outdoor microscope, was 9.16 %. Furthermore, the evaluation of this metric revealed strong positive correlations (r2 = 0.95 to 0.99) with key soiling indicators such as dust density, soiling ratio, and transmittance loss. These findings underscore the efficacy of the outdoor microscope as a fast, low-cost, and reliable soiling monitoring sensor, offering valuable insights for future monitoring and mitigation efforts.

Modeling of performance and thermodynamic study of a gas turbine power plant

The efficiencies and performance of gas turbine cycles are highly dependent on parameters such as the turbine inlet temperature (TIT), compressor inlet temperature (T1), and pressure ratio (Rc). This study analyzed the effects of these parameters on the energy efficiency, exergy efficiency, and specific fuel consumption (SFC) of a simple gas turbine cycle. The analysis found that increasing the TIT leads to higher efficiencies and lower SFC, while increasing the To or Rc results in lower efficiencies and higher SFC. For a TIT of 1400 ℃, T1 of 20 ℃, and Rc of 8, the energy and exergy efficiencies were 32.75% and 30.9%, respectively, with an SFC of 187.9 g/kWh. However, for a TIT of 900 ℃, T1 of 30 ℃, and Rc of 30, the energy and exergy efficiencies dropped to 13.18% and 12.44%, respectively, while the SFC increased to 570.3 g/kWh. The results show that there are optimal combinations of TIT, To, and Rc that maximize performance for a given application. Designers must consider trade-offs between efficiency, emissions, cost, and other factors to optimize gas turbine cycles. Overall, this study provides data and insights to improve the design and operation of simple gas turbine cycles.

Study on the Economic Operation of a 1000 MWe Coal-Fired Power Plant with CO2 Capture

The flexible operation of carbon capture units is crucial for the economic performance of coal-fired power plants equipped with CO2 capture systems. This paper aims to investigate the impact of electricity, CO2, and fuel prices on the economic operation of such plants. A novel economic optimization model is proposed, integrating a static model of the carbon capture system with a particle swarm optimization algorithm. A new concept, the CO2 boundary price, is introduced as a key metric for determining the operating conditions of CO2 capture units. The CO2 boundary price rises when the power load decreases due to the decline in power generation efficiency, and it also increases with rising fuel prices, as the cost of steam for CO2 capture increases. Additionally, when the objective is to meet power load demand, CO2 prices have a great influence on the operation of CO2 capture units, assuming fixed coal and electricity prices. However, when the primary goal is to maximize plant profitability, the system’s operational conditions are strongly influenced by the relative prices of electricity and CO2. The proposed optimization model and the uncovered price-effect mechanisms provide valuable insights into the economic operation of carbon capture power plants.

Study and Analysis thermal performance of Taza gas power plant in Kirkuk –Iraq

In this research, the concept of energy balance was implemented in one of the gas turbine electricity generation units in Iraq (Kirkuk - Taza) K1. The design operating data is taken and compared with the data calculated in the computer model used by Engineering Equation Solutions (EES), and the validity of the model used was confirmed. The results indicate the release of a large amount of thermal energy into the atmosphere due to the open Brayton cycle, as energy losses amounted to 60% of the energy input. The results based on the data of the first unit of the station demonstrated that the theoretical efficiency of the unit is a function of the two variables, which are the temperature of the air entering the compressor and the Turbine inlet temperature: Increasing the compressor inlet temperature leads to a decrease in net power output and first-law efficiency and an increase in the specific fuel consumption rate. Increasing the turbine inlet temperature to 1°C leads to an improvement in both net power output and first-law efficiency by (0.24MW, and 0.04) %), respectively. The results also showed that cooling the air entering the compressor for 1°C leads to improving power output and first law efficiency by (0.72MW, and 0.12%), respectively, and reduces specific fuel consumption by 7.8kg/MWh.

Analysis of the Effect of More Fuel and Air Variations Excess Air on Combustion Process Simulation at a 10 kW Biomass Power Plant Using ASPEN PLUS

Abstract The utilization of biomass as an alternative energy can support the achievement of Net Zero Emissions. Each type of biomass fuel can provide different combustion effects from one another. This is due to the different heating values of each fuel. The calorific value is one of the things that affect the combustion performance of the biomass power plant. The main purpose of this study is to examine how different amounts of excess air used during the combustion process affect the outcomes. Combustion is a chemical reaction involving decomposition and gasification that simultaneously occurs in a space where a large amount of energy is released. The modeling and simulation of the decomposition and gasification processes were carried out using Aspen Plus. In this simulator, the decomposition process takes place in the Yields Reactor, while the gasification process occurs in the Gibbs Reactor. The biomass and ash components are characterized by their ultimate, proximate, and sulfur analysis. Then the excess air is varied to analyze its impact on the flame temperature from the reaction. The simulation findings emphasize crucial considerations for achieving complete combustion and reducing harmful gas emissions. Maintaining excess air close to the stoichiometric level ensures maximum combustion temperature at 1616.15 °C while minimizing excess air reduces NOx gas concentration. Approaching stoichiometric air level decreases CO gas and increases CO2, indicating more thorough combustion. However, excess air leads to lower adiabatic flame temperature due to nitrogen formation.

Modelling and experimental investigation of cooling of field-operating PV panels using thermoelectric devices for enhanced power generation by industrial solar plants

The performance of commercial solar power plants degrades due to an increase in module temperatures for which standard PV-T air or water-cooling techniques are mostly used. In this study, a thermoelectric cooling system is studied for improving photovoltaic cell power efficiency and hence solar power generation. The cooling optimization requires solar cell temperature prediction of field operating PV modules, for which analysis of six models, is presented. The experimentation results show that TEC cooling maintains PV cell at 25 °C whereas PV cell without TEC operates at 55–63 °C, a higher temperature range, showing the effectiveness of the thermoelectric cooling system in precisely controlling PV cell temperature to operate at or near STC conditions in the field creating a temperature difference of 30–38 °C. The NOCT and Faiman model results are found close to the experimental values in comparison to other models. The potential for cooling and a corresponding increase in solar plant energy production is assessed using PV Syst modeling and simulation for three practical PV installation scenarios for 31 different climatic zone locations worldwide showing 6–27 % power loss due to elevated temperatures, which is not studied in previous studies adding novelty to the analysis. The results show that PV-TECS is an effective system to control the temperature of field operating PV modules, which can be used in future photovoltaic power plants. Field results and analysis of PV temperature models is crucial for the optimization and future development of PV-thermoelectric systems deployed under actual outdoor conditions as well as the expected cooling gains in different climatic locations. These aspects are collectively studied in the current work adding to the novelty of the study.

Thermal Power Plant Performance Analysis by Estimating Boiler Efficiency via Indirect Method: A Case Study

The performance of power plants is very critical since it is directly related with operating and electricity production costs. Among the other different type of power plants, coal-fired ones have advantages such as reliability and low cost fuel. In this paper, a coal (lignite) fired thermal power plant having capacity of 160 MW is taken into consideration and the impact of condenser pressure, moisture content of lignite, excess air coefficient, efficiency of turbine pressure and heater numbers on power plant thermal efficiency is investigated. It is aimed to determine performance losses of each equipment by means of the thermodynamics and economic analysis. In this scope, it is expected that the power plant operator will be able to evaluate the reduction potential of equipment performance losses and ensure more effective use of the power plants by correctly planning the maintenance and rehabilitation needs and times. In the calculations, the boiler efficiency was determined with EN 12952-15 standard (indirect method) since this method has higher accuracy in coal fired boilers. It is seen that the condenser pressure and excess air coefficient increments have not significant impact on power plant efficiency compared to moisture content of lignite, excess air coefficient, efficiency of turbine pressure and heater numbers. The significant effect is observed for fuel moisture content which rises from 22% to 47% and the power plant efficiency falls from 40% to 28%. The variation of the power plant thermal efficiency in case of failure of heaters is investigated and the power plant efficiency has decreased from 40.17% to 36.09% when the pre-heaters are no longer in to be in use because of any reason. In addition, revenue losses are estimated for each main equipment efficiency reduction for better use of power plant capacities and electricity lowering production costs.

Energy and Economic Assessment of Oxy-Fuel Combustion CO2 Capture in Coal-Fired Power Plants

Oxy-fuel combustion technology replaces air with a mixture of pure O2 and recycled flue gas for coal combustion, which leads to difficulties in the waste heat recovery of flue gas in the boiler tail of coal-fired power plants. This paper proposes a new integration scheme for waste heat recovery of flue gas in coal-fired power plants with oxy-fuel combustion CO2 capture. By introducing an oxygen preheater, a recycled flue gas preheater, and a low-pressure economizer, the waste heat of flue gas is fully recovered to preheat oxygen, recycled flue gas, and feed water, respectively. The proposed scheme simultaneously ensures the safe operation of the recycled fan and improves the thermal performance of the coal-fired power plants. Compared to the air combustion configuration, the boiler’s efficiency and gross power efficiency in the oxy-fuel combustion configuration are increased by 0.42% and 1.29%, respectively. Due to power consumption for the added equipment, the net power efficiency is reduced by 10.41%. A techno-economic analysis shows that the cost of electricity for oxy-fuel combustion in coal-fired power plants has increased from USD 46.45/MWh to USD 80.18/MWh, and the cost of the CO2 avoided reaches USD 43.24/t CO2.

Thermodynamic Analysis of Gas Turbine Power Plant of PT PLN Belawan Generation Implementation Unit

The low quality of the thermodynamic process in a gas turbine power plant results in the waste of potential energy and impacts the power plant's efficiency. Analysing the thermodynamic performance of a gas turbine power plant is crucial to evaluating its efficiency in converting fuel energy into useful work. This analysis helps identify opportunities for improvement and optimise the plant's design for better performance by examining the components (e.g., the compressor, combustion chamber, and turbine). This study aims to evaluate the performance of a Gas Turbine Power Plant (GTPP) through thermodynamic analysis considering the variation of cycle loads. The study was conducted based on the field survey data obtained from the GTPP PT PLN Belawan generation implementation unit. The collected operation data was used to perform a thermodynamic analysis by applying the principles of conservation of mass and energy, along with the laws of thermodynamics. The study examined five cycle load variations: 31.7 MW, 34.3 MW, 48.1 MW, 60.7 MW, and 71.7 MW. Results showed a consistent reduction in the gas turbine heat rate as the load increased, with a significant 53.3% drop in heat rate from 34.3 MW to 71.7 MW. Higher cycle loads also correlated with increased turbine and compressor work, with the turbine producing 55.8% more work than the compressor at 71.7 MW. The turbine's thermal efficiency ranged from 40% to 44%, with potential for a 5% efficiency increase.

Life cycle climate performance of photovoltaic power plant for Turkey’s solar power conditions

ABSTRACT In this study, a solar power plant with an output power of 10 kW AC was designed according to the Turkish Electricity Legislation. Silicon-based photovoltaic modules were used in the design. The solar power plant’s annual and lifetime electricity generation was calculated for 81 provinces of Turkey. The study contributes significantly to the literature by evaluating the environmental impacts of energy sources in a more realistic way. According to the electricity generation calculations, the power plant in Trabzon generates a minimum of 13,037 kWh of electricity per year. In comparison, the power plant in Antalya generates a maximum of 18,562 kWh. Over the plant’s life, Antalya will generate 464,040 kWh of electricity and Trabzon will generate 325,929 kWh. The life cycle climate performance technique was used to understand the environmental impacts during the installation phase, and these values were determined to be 5759 kgCO2. Emission values from electricity generation vary between 0.01241 and 0.01767 kgCO2 per kWh. These data provide a comprehensive assessment of the environmental impacts of solar power plants. This study contributes to the literature by investigating the potential and environmental effects of solar energy in different regions of Turkey in detail. In particular, presenting the emission values of electricity generation from photovoltaic systems for each province provides valuable data that can be used in shaping energy policies and developing environmental strategies. This unique study will provide a scientific basis for planning and implementing solar energy investments in Turkey and contribute significantly to developing energy policies and environmental strategies.

Performance and Parametric Studies of a Non-Compact Hybrid PV-CSP Power Plant Integrated by a Supercritical Rankine Cycle and an Electric Heater in Series

This study focuses on performing a parametric analysis of the non-compact concentrated solar power (CSP)-photovoltaic (PV) hybrid plant combined with an electric heater (EH) and a Supercritical Rankine Cycle as well as a multi-objective optimization of different technologies. The power plant sizing is evaluated in a baseload dispatch scenario of 165 MWe for a location in Seville and considering combinations of the PV installed power, CSP solar multiple (SM), thermal energy storage (TES) capacity and EH power. Studied parametric combinations are optimized for minimizing the Levelized Cost of Electricity (LCOE) and maximizing the capacity factor (CF), with the ultimate goal of achieving the Pareto front. The results of the study show that certain combinations, such as PV=450 MWe, SM=2, EH=250 MW, and TES=12 h, have a favourable balance between the LCOE and the CF (LCOE=0.0979 €/kWh, CF=0.702). In addition, the results obtained through the optimization process, in particular by considering the Pareto frontier, indicate that among the different technologies, the CSP-PV-TES-EH configuration has the lowest LCOE and the highest FC.

Grid‐connected PV system in air cooled double‐stage ORC geothermal power plant performance evaluation, case study: Sultanhisar GPP‐2

AbstractMany factors determine the percentage of parasitic load of the geothermal power plant. Domestic consumption accounts for about 20–25 per cent of total production in low‐temperature geothermal power plants. As a case study, the ratio of a 1 MW grid‐connected PV system to the internal consumption of the Sultanhisar GPP‐2 and its effect on increasing the efficiency of the system have been examined. The current production of the power plant has been modeled thermodynamically with the parameters taken from the plant, and the efficiency of the system has been calculated. Sultanhisar GPP‐2, which operates at a geothermal well temperature of 140.2°C and a net efficiency of 6.28%, has a domestic consumption to production ratio of around 25%. The installation of a 1 MW PV system is expected to produce 2140MWh per year, equivalent to 7% of the internal energy consumption.

Part-load analysis and preliminary annual simulation of a constant inventory supercritical CO2 power plant for waste heat recovery in cement industry

The present work investigates the part-load performance of a MW-scale sCO2 power plant designed as waste heat recovery unit for an existing cement plant located in Czech Republic, in the framework of the H2020 funded project CO2OLHEAT. The study first presents the selected power plant configuration and then focuses on the evaluation of its part-load operation due to variation of flue gas mass flow rate and temperature. The range of flue gas conditions at the outlet of the upstream process is retrieved from a preliminary statistical analysis of historical trends obtained through the cement plant monitoring. The numerical model developed for this study aims at providing realistic results thanks to the adoption of turbomachinery performance maps provided by the turbomachinery manufacturer of the project. Moreover, heat exchangers have been modelled through a discretized approach which has been validated against manufacturer data, while piping inventory and pressure losses have been assessed through a preliminary sizing that considers the actual distances to be covered in the cement plant. Performance decay is estimated for the whole range of flue gas conditions, reporting the most significant power cycle parameters, and identifying the main causes of efficiency loss. The part-load analysis is carried out considering a constant CO2 inventory, in order to reduce the system complexity and capital cost and simplify plant operation. Results show that the operation entails minor variation of the compressors operative points in the whole range of operating conditions of the cement plant, avoiding the risk of anti-surge bypass activation. Moreover, the plant is able to work close to the nominal thermodynamic cycle efficiency (20.5 %–23.0 %) for most of the year and benefits from part-load operation in terms of overall performance. In the last part of the work, a preliminary techno-economic analysis of the plant is also presented to highlight the potential advantages of sCO2 technology for waste heat recovery applications. The results of the part-load performance of the plant are combined with the flue gases data obtained from the preliminary statistical analysis and the cement plant historical monitoring. An annual electricity production equal to 13′909.7 MWh is obtained, corresponding to 6560 equivalent hours and a system capacity factor of 74.9 %. The investment cost of each CO2OLHEAT plant component is estimated by means of cost correlations obtained from literature and the non-discounted payback time is computed as a function of the electricity selling price. The results show that, even considering electricity prices before 2022, the payback time of the CO2OLHEAT plant is estimated to be lower than 8 years, justifying the industrial interest in the proposed technology.

Performance Analysis and Techno-Economic Evaluation of Solar Energy Retrofitting for Coal-Fired Power Plant in Central Kalimantan Province

The power generation sector significantly contributes to climate change. Mitigation efforts are crucial to adhering to the global commitment to limit temperature increases below 2°C. One potential solution is retrofitting existing power plants with technologies that integrate renewable energy. This study explores the integration of solar energy into the operational processes of a coal-fired power plant in Central Kalimantan, replacing the extraction steam turbine in the high-pressure feed water heater No. 7. Using STEAG EBSILON for simulation, this research evaluates the power plant's performance before and after retrofitting in both power-boost (PB) and fuel-save (FS) modes under varying load conditions. The results demonstrate that thermal efficiency in both PB and FS modes increased by up to 2% compared to the base scenario. Specific fuel consumption decreased by 15.05 g/kWh in PB mode and 15.75 g/kWh in FS mode, leading to a reduction in coal consumption and CO2 emissions by 4.69% and 4.94% respectively. Additionally, the study observed that the solar percentage and solar-to-electricity efficiency increased as the load decreased. In FS mode, the solar electricity proportions at VWO, 100%, 75%, and 50% load rates were 5.23%, 5.53%, 7.76%, and 11.92%, respectively. The levelized cost of energy (LCOE) for solar electricity was calculated to be 431.82 IDR/kWh, with an expected investment return period of 5.87 years.

Predictive modeling of combined cycle power plant performance using a digital twin-based neural ODE approach

This study presents a novel digital twin-based predictive modeling approach to enhance the operation, maintenance, and management of combined cycle power plants. The research aimed to accurately forecast the combined cycle power (CCP) output, a critical performance indicator, to support intelligent decision-making for plant operators and engineers. The proposed framework leverages a neural ordinary differential equation (NODE) model integrated within a digital twin architecture to capture the complex, nonlinear dynamics of combined cycle gas turbine unit (CCGU) system. The predictive model was trained and validated using multivariate time-series data collected from a CCGU, achieving high accuracy with an R2_score of 0.993, a mean absolute percentage error of 0.325 %, and a root mean squared error of 1.518. Importantly, the NODE model demonstrated superior forecasting capabilities compared to traditional machine learning techniques. The digital twin (DT) concept enables seamless real-time data integration, physics-based models, and advanced data analytics to facilitate comprehensive CCGU lifecycle management. This novel approach provides operators with reliable, real-time insights to optimize plant performance, reduce maintenance costs, and improve overall sustainability. The generalization of the NODE model to an independent CCGU unit validated its applicability across diverse power plant configurations, highlighting the originality and practical value of the research. The key contribution of this work is the development of a digital twin-based predictive modeling framework centered on the innovative use of neural ordinary differential equations to enhance the operation and maintenance of critical energy infrastructure. This research advances the state-of-the-art in intelligent asset management for the built environment.
