Abstract

This study is to simulate bioenergy in the Saudi energy sector. The methodologies used in this study include the simulation of biodiesel blends in power plants. GIS software was used to calculate the area of Jatropha plants cultivated (228.5 km2) to produce 1.62 kg/s Jatropha oil. The results showed that the validation was done by comparing the net power output (72.3 MW) and efficiency of 30.44% of the real energy plant with the simulation net power output of 69.15 MW and efficiency of 30.67%. The efficiency was increased to 51.1% after the simple cycle was modified to the combined cycle. Biodiesel (1.534 kg/s) was blended with diesel. The blended diesel and biodiesel were examined and the effect of the blends on the combined cycle power plant performance was inspected. The overall result revealed that the energy from biodiesel can be an alternative to support the Saudi Arabia Vision 2030.
