Evaluating the performance of the urban environmental management in Indonesia is not easy task due to the fact that there is no standard measure that can be utilities for evaluation. The parameters that are employed in urban environmental management are not often complete and sometimes apply to a certain sector only. Clean urban program (Adipura) and clean river program (Prokasih) are the example of this sectoral approach which is not justifiable and impressive result. However, attempts should be made to find a workable way to support decision making processes. This research uses a deterministic dynamics approach to model the dynamic performance of urban environmental management for the town of Majalaya. Results indicates that the urban environmental management program for the town of Majalaya has achieved high degree of performance. However, most other town in Bandung regency are generally need further improvement. Three methods that have been used to study their dynamic behavior may be used to measure the improvement of the urban environment management program. The moderating effects of environmental risk of the industry on the relationship between corporate environmental and financial performance

Purpose– Industries differ in their environmental impacts, such as emissions, water and energy use, fuel consumption and hazardous wastes, which will have implications for how environmental performance translates to operating performance and market value at company level. By incorporating industry-specific differences of environmental impacts, this paper includes industry-level environmental risk as a moderating factor on the relationship between two indicators of corporate environmental performance (CEP) (management and policy) and corporate financial performance (profitability and market value). The paper aims to discuss these issues.Design/methodology/approach– Using panel data of US companies across all industries, the paper empirically tests a regression model, which includes an interaction effect representing both the form and strength of dependency of CEP on the environmental risk of the industry. The paper adopts the natural resource based theory to argue that financial returns are a decreasing function of CEP in high environmental impact industries, where environmental spending beyond compliance is costly and there is not much opportunity for consumer orientation.Findings– The results show that environmental management has different impacts on operating performance at high and low environmental risk of the industry (form of relationship) while environmental policy (reporting) has a stronger signal on market premium in industries with low rather than high environmental risk (strength of relationship). Differences in both form and strength of moderating effects are demonstrated.Research limitations/implications– Further research can introduce other industry-specific moderating factors, such as the disclosure maturity of the industry and the institutionalization of environmental disclosures across boarders in the industries, in order to explore the complexity of the relationship.Practical implications– The results of the paper are relevant to investors, company managers and a broad group of stakeholders when considering both industry- and company-level environmental risks.Originality/value– Previous studies have relied on controlling for industry membership. This paper uses an industry-specific environmental variable, environmental risk of the industry, to examine the form and strength of moderating effects.

Analisis Pengelolaan Lingkungan Pabrik Kelapa Sawit Batu Ampar - PT. Smart Tbk. Dalam Implementasi Indonesian Sustainable Palm Oil

Indonesian Sustainable Palm Oil (ISPO) is a standard system of sustainable palm oil plantations in Indonesia are economically viable, socially viable and environmentally friendly which is compulsory in accordance with the regulations. This study aims to analyze the environmental management performance in palm oil mill Batu Ampar and formulate the performance optimization based on the ISPO requirements. The evaluation shows that the company can meet the 38 indicators related to environmental management with some of the achievements include utilization of renewable energy sources that generate energy by 5.0664 million KWh, amounting to 1,677,615.89 liters of diesel fuel savings, reduction in CO2 emissions by 70.63 Kg / ton CPO, chemical fertilizers worth saving Rp.5.750.080,00 / ha / year. The optimization strategy for continuous improvement which is based on the SWOT analysis include: the selection of accredited laboratories, improve the performance of Waste Water Treatment Plant, planned to construct methane capture, optimizing the utilization of solid waste, optimizing the reduction of hazardous waste, provide input in determining government policy, and training routine related to environmental management to improve the competence of personnel. What We Know About Environmental Policy: An Inductive Typology of the Research

AbstractEnvironmental performance is a multidimensional concept that is difficult to measure since it concerns the pollution generated by companies, their energy consumption and their different environmental policies. Academic research has used objective and/or non‐objective indicators to measure this performance, dealing with both its managerial and measurement dimensions. This paper provides an inductive typology of the academic work concerning environmental policy through a computerized content analysis of 151 articles from 1992 to 2014 related to the management and measurement of environmental performance. The results highlight four major themes around which the academic research is organized: the relationship between environmental and financial performance, environmental performance under stakeholder engagement and institutional pressures, the strategic management of environmental performance, and increasing awareness of the sustainable development issue. Environmental performance research has evolved from a quantitative towards a more managerial dimension, highlighting the integration of performance within the management of a corporate business strategy. Environmental management in industrial estate is the strategic policy model which is needed to be developed referring to the Indonesian Government Decree number 24 year 2009, that state almost all of the new industrial developments should be located in industrial estate. The complexity in this environmental management was approached by “green rating” of PROPER’s criteria regulated by Ministry of Environment & Forestry (KLHK). PROPER is the assessment program of company performance rating in environmental management. Green rating is classified by PROPER in terms of beyond compliance performance. The result of the case study in Jababeka Industrial Estate (KIJA) Bekasi, based on its environmental situational analysis year 2014 by multidimensional scaling (MDS) method, showed that only the management dimension had a sustainability performance. The results of prospective analysis on leverage factors of MDS showed that the key factors of the environmental management model were (1) DRKPL (summary document of environmental management performance), (2) implementation of water conservation and reducing water pollution program, (3)funding for water conservation, (4) monitoring and evaluation of community development program, (5) implementation of 3R (reduce, reuse, recycle) programs of hazardous waste, (6) technology of 3R, and (7) benchmarking. Based on the key parameters and referred to the possibilities conditions, three scenarios have been developed to approach the implementative policy. The moderate scenario was recommended to be the right policy in term of consideration of technology, funding availability, time of implementation and organization skills.

An EIoT system designed for ecological and environmental management of the Xianghe Segment of China’s Grand Canal

ABSTRACTEcological and environmental protection of the Xianghe Segment of China’s Grand Canal (XSCGC) has gained increasing attention. The Xianghe Segment is located in a highly urbanized area, and it is imperative to promote the environmental quality of this region. Application of the Environmental Internet of Things (EIoT) can greatly improve the performance and effectiveness of ecological and environmental management. In this study, we propose and describe an ecological and environmental management system based on EIoT to monitor canal construction. This system includes a digital management platform and an environmental early warning platform, which monitor and manage water resources, soil–plant biodiversity, waste production, and energy use in real time. Based on a regional analysis of the construction plan and environmental and anthropogenic factors, the key monitoring areas were determined and the spatial distribution of the EIoT sensing layer was arranged. The construction of EIoT should be carried out in three stages to effectively monitor the ecology and environment of the study region. The application of landsenses ecology to the EIoT system will help improve ecological planning.

Environmental operations management and its links with proactivity and performance: A study of the UK food industry

Two important strands of research within the literature on Environmental Operations Management (EOM) relate to environmental approach and performance. Often in this research the links between environmental approach, environmental performance and EOM are considered separately with little consideration given to the interrelationships between them. This study develops and tests a theoretical framework that combines these two strands to explore how UK food manufacturers approach EOM. The framework considers the relationships between an environmentally pro-active strategic orientation, EOM and environmental and cost performance. A cross-sectional survey was developed to collect data from a sample of 1200 food manufacturing firms located within the UK. Responses were sought from production and operations managers who are knowledgeable about the environmental operations practices within their firms. A total of 149 complete and useable responses were obtained. The reliability and validity of the scales used in the survey were tested using exploratory factor analysis, prior to the testing of the hypotheses underpinning the theoretical framework using hierarchical regression analysis. Our results generate support for a link between environmental proactivity, environmental practices and performance, consistent with the natural resource-based view (NRBV) and a number of studies in the extant literature. In considering environmental proactivity as a standalone concept that influences the implementation of environmental practices outlined in the NRBV, our study generates some novel insights into these links. Further our results provide some interesting insights for managers within the food industry who can identify the potential benefits of certain practices for performance within this unique context.

The moderating effect of ‘Green’ HRM on the association between proactive environmental management and financial performance in small firms

Research has shown an association between proactive adoption of environmental management practices and firm performance; however little of this research, particularly in the small firm context, has examined the impact of human resources management (HRM) practices on that association. Using data drawn from a sample of 158 small firms in the Australian machinery and equipment-manufacturing sector, this article contributes an empirical test of the moderating effect of HRM on the association between proactive environmental management and firm financial performance. In so doing, we draw on the concept of ‘Green’ HRM; that is to say, practices aligned with environmental sustainability goals and which aim at developing employees' abilities, motivation and commitment, and involvement in support of those goals at the firm level. The findings reveal that Green HRM positively moderates the association between proactive environmental management and financial performance, such that a high level of Green HRM increases the financial benefits of proactive environmental management compared with low levels of Green HRM. The findings show the added value that Green HRM provides when used as an enabler of proactive environmental management; this study should help allay concerns of small firms about the potential cost burden they may face from increasing governmental and social demands for environmental sustainability.

A comprehensive literature review on, and the construction of a framework for, environmental legitimacy, accountability and proactivity

This paper identifies three conceptually distinct, but interrelated concepts regarding corporate environmental behaviour from the literature – environmental legitimacy, environmental accountability, and environmental proactivity – and shows how they can be integrated into a single framework. This is done in a context where prior studies in the literature do not relate these concepts to each other or place the concepts within a meaningful context, nor integrate them into a single framework. The framework demonstrates an organisational journey towards achieving legitimacy in environmental endeavours. Environmental legitimacy is conditional upon the public evaluation of corporate environmental performance and environmental reporting (environmental accountability), which in turn, requires organisations to invest in environmental management and accounting systems and stakeholder engagement (environmental proactivity). The paper identifies company, stakeholder and other characteristics that influence the constructs in the framework and also propose a research agenda based on this framework. Environmental performance constitutes the central concept in the framework, acknowledging that improved environmental performance promotes the ultimate goal of sustainability. The framework suggests that the judicious management of environmental performance and reporting, the two components of environmental accountability, results in environmental legitimacy. Furthermore, environmental accountability can be enhanced by environmental proactivity, a concept comprising environmental management and environmental accounting, as well as stakeholder engagement. This synthesis of the factors that influence and contribute to environmental performance is the framework's main contribution.

How to Apply the Sustainability Balanced Scorecard Concept

Abstract Many successful enterprises have identified a large significance of non-economic determinants of business and their influence on competitive success. Social responsible behaviour becomes an imperative of modern business environment. Corporate social responsibility emphasizes more effective environmental and social performance management so that its influence on financial performance becomes more and more obvious. In that sense, the aim of this paper is to point out the theoretical foundations of the Sustainability Balanced Scorecard (SBS) concept, and to demonstrate an example of enterprise, which will show how to develop SBS in the aim of its successful application.

Linking Sustainability to Quality Management and Firm Performance

Environmental management practices have evolved significantly over the past two decades. During that time, sustainable operations management practices have purportedly made positive contributions to overall firm performance. This paper develops two conceptual frameworks regarding the relationships among specific elements of environmental management, quality management, and firm performance. We suggest that innovation in quality management mediates the relationship between design for environment and firm performance, and that statistical process control techniques moderate the relationship between environmental management systems and firm performance. We identify future research possibilities, based on these frameworks, to inform scholarly research and practice in environmental management and quality management.

Green and competitive: empirical evidence from ISO 9001 certified Brazilian companies

Purpose– There are many arguments in the literature on environmental management stating that companies that have a significant environmental performance tend to be more competitive, because environmental management tends to generate positive effects on their operational performance. Despite the fact that such arguments are widely accepted, there is little empirical evidence yet of such a relationship in manufacturing contexts that are rarely studied thus far, such as those of developing countries. The paper aims to discuss these issues.Design/methodology/approach– With the objective of testing the positive relationship between environmental performance and operational performance, this research presents the data of a survey conducted with 75 ISO 9001-certified Brazilian companies. Such data were analyzed by means of structural equation modeling.Findings– The paper discovered that, indeed, environmental management relates in a positive, significant manner and large effect to the operational performance of companies.Originality/value– This is the first exploratory research relating environmental management and operational performance in Brazilian companies with ISO 9001.

Estructura organizativa para la gestión ambiental del polo turístico de Puerto Padre

Partiendo de la base de que la tendencia turística mundial está motivada hacia lugares en los que prevalece el contacto directo con la naturaleza y en los que prime un sentimiento ecologista y de responsabilidad con el ambiente, se hace de extrema importancia el tratamiento a la temática ambiental y su gestión para el desarrollo de la actividad turística. Súmese a ello que la industria turística en ocasiones atenta contra los ecosistemas en que se desarrollan; algunos como las zonas costeras tienen una alta vulnerabilidad. El trabajo que presentamos tiene por objetivo proponer una estructura organizativa para favorecer el desempeño de la gestión ambiental en el polo turístico del municipio Puerto Padre, en la provincia de Las Tunas, Cuba. Éste se basa fundamentalmente en la evaluación de la gestión ambiental a partir de la aplicación de un sistema de indicadores. En el mismo se caracteriza el polo turístico y se evalúa el desempeño ambiental de la estructura organizativa. Finalmente se propone una estructura organizativa que coordina la gestión ambiental a través de la participación de los actores implicados. Para la elaboración de la investigación se utilizaron métodos teóricos y empíricos que permitieron la elaboración de la estructura organizativa para la gestión ambiental en una zona costera turística que permitirá un desempeño ambiental superior, así como un turismo con mayor calidad.

Study on Corporate Environmental Performance Evaluation Based on Circular Economy

The enterprise is the main body of the market economy, impact of business activities on the environment is multifaceted, the effective management of the environmental performance of enterprises is the basis of circular economy construction, social sustainable development implementation. This article is based on theory of circular economy and sustainable development, analysis of existing problems and shortcomings of enterprise performance evaluation, combined with China's reality, discusses the value orientation of corporate environmental performance management and performance evaluation of the target under the Circular Economy , research building enterprise environmental performance evaluation system, in order to provide reference for decision-making and practice of enterprises.

Regression Model of the Effect of Management Environment on the Contract Amount of Construction Firms

The growth potential of a corporation can be assessed in terms of its orders and sales. Because the management of a construction company starts with order-taking, orders received is directly related to corporate survival. New orders are impacted not only by construction business cycle, but also by a variety of external factors such as loan interest rate, legislation, and orders awarded in the public and private sectors, among other factors. These environmental factors have different impacts on companies and it is not easy to establish these relationships. However, it is possible to establish the impacts that particular environmental factors such as orders available from the public and private sectors have on orders received by companies in relative and qualitative terms, though it is still necessary to quantify such impacts. Nevertheless, no preceding research has attempted to quantitatively analyze the relationship between environmental changes and management performance of construction firms in Korea. Hence, the objective of this paper is to propose a regression model of the effect of management environment on contract amount of construction firms. The outcomes of this study will help forecast management performance in response to changes in business environment and provide basic inputs for corporate management strategies.

Processo de mapeamento das publicações científicas de um tema: portfólio bibliográfico e análise bibliométrica sobre avaliação de desempenho de cooperativas de produção agropecuária

As Cooperativas de Produção Agropecuária (CPA) têm se consolidado no cenário econômico e social por sua característica específica de unir o desenvolvimento econômico ao bem-estar social do seu grupo de associados. Diante dessa especificidade, como auxiliar as cooperativas a identificar em quais atividades devem investir esforços? Na área dos negócios, a Avaliação de Desempenho (AD) oferece insumos. Assim, esse artigo objetiva construir, nos pesquisadores, o conhecimento necessário sobre o tema Avaliação de Desempenho de Cooperativas de Produção Agropecuária e explicitá-lo por meio da identificação de um Portfólio Bibliográfico que o represente e pelo mapeamento de suas características. Essa investigação caracteriza-se como exploratório-descritiva e adota o instrumento Knowledge Development Process - Construtivist (Proknow-C). Como resultado, verificou-se que o tema é representado por 14 artigos, cuja maioria foi publicada em periódicos vinculados ao assunto central desta investigação (Cooperativas e Agropecuária); "Environmental management and firm performance: a case study" é o artigo mais relevante; e inexiste autor com trajetória de pesquisa nesse tema. Como conclusão geral, constatou-se que a maioria dos artigos adota uma afiliação teórica de AD informada sob uma abordagem realista. Os autores sugerem a adoção de uma perspectiva construtivista para novas pesquisas nessa área.

The Sustainability Challenges in the Adoption of Cleaner Production System: A Review

The adoption of cleaner production systems potentially reduces the risk of hazard in work environments, improves the environmental management performance as well as streamlining the sustainability in manufacturing operations. However, failure to identify and understand the challenges in implementing this practice may cause the implementation process becomes less efficient. The literatures showed that the requirement to balance four key challenges, namely economic performance, legislation compliance, psychological concern and social responsiveness can enhance the adaptation process of cleaner production system. The ability to detect and understanding every challenge identified is very crucial, primarily to set better focus and strategic planning on getting the optimum benefits, as well as improve the environmental performance in revolutionising sustainable manufacturing practice.
