Conceptual Framework on information technology and supply chain management on operational performance in Construction companies

Project management is a very important discipline that acts to enhance operational performance. therefore, the project has a timeframe to finalize the project in proper quality and time with optimum cost. the objective of this study is to identify a conceptual framework that links the information technology used with supply chain management to improve the operational performance in construction companies, which considered essential tasks to ensure the quality of the product and services during approval and supplying stage. The problem is the absence of some advanced technologies to control and monitoring supply chain management in some of the construction industries. This study will focus on the big size, construction companies in the sultanate of Oman to get an efficient and effective result.

Effect of site sanitation on the safety performance of workers on construction sites in Minna, Nigeria

Studies have shown that site sanitation practices are capable of improving the health and safety (H&S) performance of construction companies. In spite of this, evidence has shown that the level of compliance to these practices by construction firms is still poor. This study evaluated the effect of site sanitation on the safety performance of workers on construction sites. Data were obtained through a well-structured questionnaire. Analysis of data was done using Relative Importance Index (RII), Mean Item Score (MIS) and Spearman’s Rank Correlation. It was found that provision of first aid facilities is the measure most complied with on sites (RII = 0.96); relationship between level of compliance to good sanitation measures and accident rate is not significant; and provision of Personal Protective Equipment is the most effective strategy for minimising rate of accidents (MIS = 4.95). It was concluded that the effect of site sanitation on safety performance of workers on construction sites in Minna is not significant. It was thus recommended that construction firms should always comply with the measures for enhancing good sanitation on sites, especially “Provision of drinking water”, in order to improve safety performance on site.

Performance Evaluation of Construction Companies Using Integrated Entropy–Fuzzy VIKOR Model

The construction sector plays an important role in a country’s economic development. The financial performance of a company is a good indicator of its financial health and status. In Malaysia, the government encourages the construction industry to develop an advanced infrastructure related to health, transport, education and housing. In view of the COVID-19 pandemic, the operations and financial performance of construction sector companies have been affected recently. Additionally, uncertainty plays a vital role in the multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) process. Based on previous studies, there has been no comprehensive study conducted on the evaluation of the financial performance of construction companies by integrating entropy and fuzzy VIKOR models. Therefore, this paper aims to propose an MCDM model to evaluate and compare the financial performance of construction companies with an integrated entropy–fuzzy VIKOR model. A case study is carried out by evaluating the listed construction companies in Malaysia with the proposed model. The findings of this paper indicate that the company ECONBHD achieves the best financial performance over the study period. The significance of this paper is to determine the priority of the financial ratios and ranking of the construction companies with the proposed entropy–fuzzy VIKOR model.

Mediating and moderating effects of a client focus on the innovation–financial performance relationship

Abstract The influence of a client focus on innovation and companies’ performance remains inconclusive. The paper investigates the mediating and moderating effects of a client focus on the relationship between innovation and financial performance. Survey data were collected from construction companies and analysed using partial least square structural equation modelling. The findings showed that the client focus partially mediates the relationship between innovation and financial performance, and this relationship is strong in companies with a low client focus. Practitioners need to balance innovation and a client focused strategy to improve the performance of construction companies and advance innovation in the industry.

DETERMINANT ANALYSIS OF FINANCIAL RATIO ON STOCK RETURNS IN CONSTRUCTION COMPANIES REGISTERED AT INDONESIA STOCK EXCHANGE 2015-2019

The growth of the construction sector in Indonesia has indirectly contributed to the growth in the performance of construction companies. This construction performance growth has an impact on stock price movements, apart from the influence of demand and supply of shares. The condition of fluctuating stock price movements requires investors to analyze financial statements before making investment decisions. To find out how the stock price performance can be done by measuring stock returns. In connection with these conditions, the purpose of this study is to analyze the effect of ROE, DER, CR, PBV and TATO on stock returns in construction companies listed on the IDX in 2015 - 2019. This research is included in the category of comparative causal research. The number of samples used in this study were 13 sample companies, with the sampling technique using purposive sampling. The type of data in this study is secondary data taken by the documentation method at Yahoo Finance. The data analysis method uses panel data regression analysis assisted by the Eviews 9.0 software. The results of the study partially show that ROE; DER, CR, PBV, and TATO have a positive and significant effect on stock returns. In addition, ROE, DER, CR, PBV, and TATO simultaneously have a significant effect on stock returns.

Identification of significant financial performance indicators for the Indian construction companies

Financial ratio analysis has been instrumental over the years to evaluate the financial state of construction companies. However, such an analysis is tedious owing to the presence of a large number of financial ratios corresponding to different construction companies. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to identify the significant financial performance factors (SFPFs) for construction companies. A stratified sampling technique was adopted and the list of companies pertaining to the construction industry was prepared on the basis of scope, sub-sectors, age, enlistment at the national stock exchange, and most importantly the availability of financial statements for last ten years. The data pertaining to financial statements for last 10 years was collected from Capitaline database. In this study, a mixed approach (qualitative and quantitative) has been used involving factor analysis on financial ratios of 100 Indian construction companies over the period of ten years (2008–17) for determining the key factors which govern the financial performance of the companies. A total of five SFPFs were identified, namely investor return, business efficiency, operations management, activity efficiency and risk coverage, and asset management. Further, relative importance of each of these factors was determined by means of percentage explanation of variance respectively. These SFPFs can provide important relevant information about the financial performance of the company. This will help the company and its related stakeholders in better planning of its strategies and policies by focusing on a few important areas for overall improvement of the company. This may further lead to develop a financial performance evaluation framework to evaluate and improve financial performance of construction companies.

Human Resource Management Strategy and Safety Culture as Competitive Advantages in Order to Improve Construction Company Performance

This study was conducted to analyze human resource management strategies and safety culture as competitive advantages to improve company performance in the construction industry in Indonesia and to identify related factors to achieve competitive advantage in the construction industry. Primary data were collected by distributing questionnaires to 174 construction companies in Indonesia. The results of SEM data processing using the Lisrel software show that recruitment, selection, performance management, compensation, and training and development that are integrated with safety culture can be a competitive advantage and can improve the performance of construction companies in Indonesia. Future studies can use this strategic human resource management model in different industrial sectors by increasing the number of samples so that the research results can be generalized to the intended population.

The influence of occupational safety and health program on the manpower performance of construction company in Banda Aceh city

The implementation of occupational safety and health program in Banda Aceh city is still not optimal, as indicated by a high rate of work accidents. The purpose of this research is to study the effect of the occupational safety and health program on the manpower performance of construction companies in Banda Aceh city. Three construction companies were studied and compared to each other. Data collection was carried out by observation, using questionnaires, and interviewing the respondents of the research, in this case, the foreman, chief workman, workman, and worker. Data processing is conducted by using descriptive statistical analysis, validity test, reliability test, and regression analysis. The results of the analysis show that the application of occupational safety and health program has a significant influence on manpower performance.

The association between subcontractor safety management programs and worker perceived safety climate in commercial construction projects

Problem: Safety management programs (SMPs) are designed to mitigate risk of workplace injuries and create a safe working climate. The purpose of this project was to evaluate the relationship between contractors’ SMPs and workers’ perceived safety climate and safety behaviors among small and medium-sized construction subcontractors. Methods: Subcontractor SMP scores on 18 organizational and project-level safety items were coded from subcontractors’ written safety programs and interviews. Workers completed surveys to report perceptions of their contractor’s safety climate and the safety behaviors of coworkers, crews, and themselves. The associations between SMP scores and safety climate and behavior scales were examined using Spearman correlation and hierarchical linear regression models (HLM). Results: Among 78 subcontractors working on large commercial construction projects, we found striking differences in SMP scores between small, medium, and large subcontractors (p < 0.001), related to a number of specific safety management practices. We observed only weak relationships between SMP scales and safety climate scores reported by 746 workers of these subcontractors (β = 0.09, p = 0.04 by HLM). We saw no differences in worker reported safety climate and safety behaviors by contractor size. Discussion: SMP only weakly predicted safety climate scales of subcontractors, yet there were large differences in the quality and content of SMPs by size of employers. Summary: Future work should determine the best way to measure safety performance of construction companies and determine the factors that can lead to improved safety performance of construction firms. Practical applications: Our simple assessment of common elements of safety management programs used document review and interviews with knowledgeable representatives. These methods identified specific safety management practices that differed between large and small employers. In order to improve construction safety, it is important to understand how best to measure safety performance in construction companies to gain knowledge for creating safer work environments.

An Empirical Analysis of Organizational Performance of Construction Companies in Pakistan through Mediating Role of Conflict Management Effectiveness

This paper aims to examine the impact of organizational factors and verify mediating role of conflict management effectiveness on perceived performance of registered construction companies in Pakistan. The study adopts a survey research design using a well-structured questionnaire of 450 employees from construction companies located in Lahore and Karachi. The construction industry is characterized by performance setbacks for decades. Descriptive statistics and mediation analysis were employed to analyze the conceptual model. The research paper concludes that distortions in reduced workforce productivity and relationship conflicts should be overcome by capable professional &amp; administrative services. The analysis depicts that socio-economic and political factors play a significant role to maintain the quality in local construction industry. The findings reveal that performance of construction companies is significantly related to internal factors i.e. workforce productivity, decentralization, perceived organizational politics and relationship conflict. The study provides guidelines to organizational decision-makers and government policy-makers for public reforms in infrastructure to improve their output. The present study was undertaken to provide new horizons and advance understanding on organizational performance (OP) of construction companies in Pakistan. The most significant part of this study is the comprehensive five-factor organizational performance model designed to test mediation among variables using partial least square structural equation modelling (SEM).

Exploring Worker’s Absence Pattern in the Construction Industry in Iran

The worker’s absence considerably affects the performance of the labor-intensive construction projects. Identifying the worker’s absence pattern assists construction project managers in preparing the proper project organization, reducing the absence rate, and improving the project performance. Despite its critical role, no study has investigated the absence pattern in the construction industry in Iran. This study addresses this gap by identifying the worker’s absence pattern and providing recommendations to reduce the absence rate. First, a comprehensive literature review is conducted on the impacts and influential factors of the worker’s absence. Then, a questionnaire-based survey is designed and distributed among project managers, work supervisors, and human resource experts in different construction companies. The absence rate of seven percent achieved for the construction industry in Iran is among the high rates compared to the rates reported for other countries. The organizational policies, the national holiday season and the size of the working groups are among the main influential factors. Enhancing teamwork spirit, enforcing severe implications for the worker’s absence, and increasing managers’ site visits are among the recommended policies for reducing the absence rate. The identified pattern in this research is applicable for evaluating and improving the performance of construction companies in Iran.

The Impact of Financing Type of the Construction Companies in Managing of Projects Under Implementation (In Iraq)

The financing of the construction company plays an important role in determining the efficiency and value of the contracts enters by the company, determining the level of performance of the company, and controls how to maintain the leveling of the financial management of projects correctly.This research aims to study the reality of the construction companies, their financing (self or public) and its role for the work progress, the level of performance, the number of projects under implementation. A comparison made between Public and self-financing, based on a questionnaire of field information prepared for this purpose and collected from the professionals in those companies. The paper discussed the factors that lead to support the financing by privatization of companies in the construction sector.The research found that the weakness of financing reflected negatively on the performance of construction companies in general and self-financing companies in particular. Progress work may not be achieved or actually stop in conditions of economic and financial crises, and its poor impact on the performance of workers in these companies will be due to lack or failure of financial funding. The research proposed a privatization of construction companies in order to sustain the work and success.

Health and Safety Considerations in Mega Construction Projects

The construction industry is considered one of the most hazardous industries especially in Mega projects, not only in developing countries but also throughout the world due to its unique nature. The hazards of this industry make it very essential to pay more attention to construction safety and to improve the safety performance of construction companies. However, safety is not a luxury but a necessity, and may be considered an important function to be used against unnecessary loss. International Mega Construction projects are likely to become increasingly common in the engineering and construction industry. A Mega-project as a high impact technically complex project which requires careful advanced planning, large projects are defined as those with construction work valued in excess of US $1billion. On such projects, there may be 60 large contracting organizations and 30 to 40 consulting companies. The construction workforce could total 45,000 personnel delivering over 10 million man hours of effort per month at peak periods, so there is a need of guidance material that can be used to improve the management of health and safety(H&amp;S) throughout these type of projects. Thus the aim of this paper is to identify the H&amp;S considerations that are related to Mega Construction Projects. To achieve the aim of this paper a literature review analysis has been performed where more than hundred research paper that have been published from 1998, to 2018 have been analyzed. Findings of this paper have managed to identify the nature of mega construction projects, the root causes of accidents and the consequence of poor health and safety management in mega construction projects. This paper is considered of value to construction project officers and Project managers working in mega construction projects in Egypt and MENA region.

The impact of human resource management practices on organizational performance in construction companies in Jordan

The aim of this study is to measure the impact of human resource (HR) practices on organisational performance in the context of construction companies. The population consisted of employees at all managerial levels of 16 construction companies in Jordan. From which the data was gathered through a structured questionnaire. In total 228 valid questionnaires were obtained, yielded a response rate of 67%. Multiple regression analysis was used to test the study hypotheses. The results reveal that HR practices have a significant impact on organisational performance in construction companies. Moreover, training and development, as well as performance appraisal, have a significant impact on organisational performance, while the two other practices (recruitment and selection and compensation) did not have a significant impact. The results can be used as a toolkit for revealing the strengths and weaknesses of HR practices and to formulate agile strategies to improve organisational performance.

Investigation on the Performance of Construction Companies in Malaysia with Entropy-TOPSIS Model

Construction industry plays an important role to a nation due to its contribution to the economic growth. The objective of this paper is to propose an Entropy-TOPSIS model in evaluating and comparing the financial performance of the construction companies in Malaysia. In this study, the listed construction companies in Malaysia are investigated using Entropy-TOPSIS model. The results of this study show that ZECON, DKLS, GADANG, ECONBHD and MELATI are ranked as top five construction companies based on the proposed model. This study is significant because it helps to determine the financial performance of the construction company as well as identify the importance of the decision criteria in the evaluation on the financial performance of the construction companies in Malaysia with the proposed conceptual framework based of entropy-TOPSIS model.

The effect of heavy equipment management on the performance of the construction project and the construction company

The appropriate use of heavy equipment will affect the progress of a construction project. An inappropriate choice of heavy equipment will result in low productivity and at the end will incur additional costs. Previous studies have been observing separately the effect of heavy equipment management on the performance of the construction project and the effect of heavy equipment of the performance of the construction company. In this present paper, using structural equation modelling (SEM), both relationships will be studied simultaneously and additionally direct effect of performance of construction project on the performance of construction company will be observed as well. It was found that both relationships were significant and positive.
