Enhancing employee performance appraisal through optimized association rule algorithms: a data mining approach.

The planning and development department of the China Yangtze river three gorges engineering development corporation aims to improve its intelligent performance management system in accordance with the company's vision. This paper presents a study on enhancing intelligent performance management in the Planning and Development Department of the China Yangtze River Three Gorges Engineering Development Corporation. By combining data mining techniques with association rule algorithms, a performance prediction model was established. The goal is to explore a performance management system aligned with the company's vision and the specific characteristics of construction enterprises. Experimental results show the effectiveness of the GABPNN model, achieving a prediction error of 5% or less in seven out of seventeen sample points, with a maximum relative error of 20.86%. The suggested performance management system presents a useful strategy for construction companies to improve their performance evaluation procedures, boosting overall management efficiency and aligning with their distinctive traits.

The Role of Employee Engagement, Empowerment and Culture in Effective Performance Management

Performance management systems (PMS) are an essential tool in shaping employee behaviour in organizations. PMSs are also an important part of today's organizations and provide a framework for improving employee performance, productivity and leadership. Previous studies have not examined how PMSs influence employee behaviour, i.e. what are the mediating and moderating roles in this relationship. This article reviews and synthesizes current scientific knowledge on the influence of performance management systems on employee behaviour and examines the role of mediating and moderating mechanisms in this relationship. A systematic review of 83 research articles published in English up to 2022 was conducted. The review investigated various mechanisms through which PMS influences employee behaviour (specifically employee commitment, motivation and satisfaction). Promising trends and research trajectories were identified through content analysis with a mediating and moderating role. The PMS influences employee behaviour primarily through three constructs - clearly set goals, properly set rewards, and effective feedback delivery. A consistent (effective) PMS subsequently contributes to employee engagement and empowerment, which mediate the relationship. Organizational culture is a moderator because it can deepen the relationship between PMS and employee behaviour. The performance-oriented organizational culture in a company helps to create an effective PMS that positively influences employee behaviour. From a theoretical perspective, this paper synthesizes the results of each research, assesses the knowledge base in our selected research area, and clarifies potential avenues for future research and trends. This research contributes valuable insights for organizations seeking to improve their PMS for sustained employee success and satisfaction, as the literature search described the impact of PMS on employee behaviour through the identification and examination of individual mediating and moderating roles. Managers who pay attention to employee engagement and empowerment can then set up activities to have a good and necessary impact on employee commitment, motivation and satisfaction.

A Football Club's Strategic Performance Management

The current study presented in this article shows that football teams should; generally speaking, implement a multifaceted performance management system that takes into account the opinions of all stakeholders. The Balanced Scorecard (BSC), which offers an integrated framework for measuring and managing performance, can assist clubs in evaluating both financial and non-financial activities. This study's context and content greatly advance our knowledge of the football industry and offer a thorough and all-encompassing set of contributions to the field of business academia. The knowledge acquired on a topic that has naturally shown to have a significant impact on people inherently adds something useful and beneficial to society.

Dynamic Stakeholder Analysis Through Process Mapping

ABSTRACTIdentification of stakeholders and their importance is critical to the design of accountability and performance management systems. Conventional stakeholder analysis approaches provide a static view of stakeholders and overlook that accountability is a dynamic process encompassing multiple temporally separated (or distinct) stages. We approach stakeholder analysis from a process perspective to ensure a more complete identification of stakeholders and to capture the dynamic nature of stakeholder emergence, retirement, and changes in relative importance. We used a participatory action research methodology to investigate contracting services in a community health setting and employed process mapping to reveal contracting activities undertaken in sequential stages of Deming's Plan–Do–Check–Act (PDCA) cycle. Stakeholders engage at different stages with different activities of a process so that in multi‐stage processes, stakeholder analysis needs to be repeated at each stage and is specific to each stage. Our use of the PDCA is broader than traditional applications and provides a suitable framework for a more complete identification of stakeholders across the entire process while aligning well with accountability and management control notions. The contribution is an approach that not only better identifies stakeholders but also recognizes the dynamics of multi‐stage processes for stakeholder interest and influence. The recurring nature of many processes (such as contracting) implies that roles remain the same even if an organization is restructured so that process mapping will still identify roles and stakeholders. This approach can be used by other organizations to better identify stakeholders and their dynamics in the planning and delivery processes.

Event-Driven Data Integration to Automate Elevator Service Contract Booking Between MS Dynamics and Oracle JDE with Operational MDM for Master Data Integration

With increasing digitization in industries, data driven integration between enterprise systems is critical for automating business processes and improving efficiency. This paper presents a novel approach to automate elevator service contract bookings by integrating Microsoft Dynamics (MS Dynamics) with Oracle JD Edwards EnterpriseOne (JDE) through event-driven data integration. A key aspect of this integration is the utilization of an Operational Master Data Management (MDM) system to ensure consistency of master data across both platforms. This event-driven architecture significantly reduces manual intervention and improves data accuracy by ensuring near real-time synchronization of data across systems. Paper will also explore a case study where this event driven automation was implemented for a large elevator and escalator manufacturing and services company to reduce overall contract booking turnaround time from 45 days to 5 days and save more than $1M in labor cost over 3 years. Analysis of Current Challenges Affecting Business Operations of Two State Enterprises

study sought to establish challenges affecting the effective business operations of two Zimbabwe parastatals under the Ministry of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development namely, the Grain Marketing Board (GMB) and the Zimbabwe National Water Authority (ZINWA). The study was prompted by negative media reports and complaints from key stakeholders about the operations of these institutions. The main theory underpinning the study was the Resource-Based Entrepreneurship theory (RBET) by Hussain et al. (2019) complimented by the organisation theory (Oyibo and Gabriel, 2020). The pragmatism philosophy was applied to ensure that both quantitative and qualitative aspects of study were accommodated. The study used the mixed methods paradigm and the explanatory sequential design. The target population was made up of 97 managers from the GMB and the ZINWA, as well as government officials. A sample of 46 respondents was used to obtain quantitative data responses. Purposive sampling the online sample calculator were used to determine the two sample sizes made of those who provided qualitative data and those for quantitative data through use of a self -administered structured questionnaire and semi-structured interview guide. .The major findings were that the two parastatals did not have management succession plans and suffered from political interference, lacked financial resources to carry out their operations and deliver quality products and/ or services. The major recommendations were; the need to promote autonomy and reduce bureaucracy in their operations, mobilising more resources particularly finances to ensure that daily operational expenses are met, implementing sound corporate governance systems that address corruption and having a coherent and effective performance management system.

The major recommended strategies are that both parastatals should conduct research to facilitate innovation and development, creating and enforcing prudent and transparent financial management systems, adoption of sound corporate governance framework (practices), as well as carrying out organisational restructuring, nurturing appropriate organisational culture and having effective performance management systems.

Strategies for Effective Occupational Stress Management in the Workplace

Effective stress management involves addressing and mitigating occupational stress among employees. Designing a successful stress management program requires identifying key factors that influence employees’ ability to manage workplace stress. This also involves selecting intervention models that can effectively target these factors. The management framework conceptualizes occupational stress as an outcome of how stressors are perceived and how employees evaluate their coping resources. Organizational strategies to control occupational stress tend to take a more proactive approach. This study examines occupational stress management at both organizational and individual levels, aiming to enhance our understanding of effective workplace coping strategies for occupational stress. The study results indicate that IT employees, at both individual and organizational levels, expect organizations to implement stress management strategies, including counseling, training and development programs, proper recognition, career advancement opportunities, effective performance management systems, open communication, and ample support from management.

Smart Factory Operation Management System and Innovation in the Era of Smart Manufacturing

This study is dedicated to the innovative research of smart factory operation management systems in the era of smart manufacturing. Against the backdrop of the rapid evolution of the information revolution, smart manufacturing, represented by a new generation of information technologies such as mobile Internet, big data, and artificial intelligence, is rapidly emerging. As an information-physical fusion system, smart factories interpenetrate physical and virtual resources by interweaving multi-scale production systems, forming an open, complex giant system with multiple levels and dimensions. It is found that smart factories face a complex and variable structure, and their production and operations involve a large number of cross-domain, cross-industry, and cross-region manufacturing resources, requiring the establishment of a new operation management system framework and breakthroughs in key theories and methods. This study provides comprehensive and in-depth theoretical and technical support for constructing a smart factory operation management system. It lays the foundation for the smart upgrading of the manufacturing industry.

The impact of female board membership and firm performance on the environmental management system

This paper examines the effect of gender diversity on the Environmental Management Systems (EMS) measured as ISO 14001 adoption among Saudi-listed companies. In this study, we propose that female board members significantly influence EMS adoption by employing agency theory, stakeholder theory and resource dependency theory to predict the relationship. The final sample of this study consists of 44 firm-year observations for non-financial companies listed on the Saudi Stock Exchange with ISO 14001 certification from 2016 to 2019. The logistic regression results show that higher representation of women on boards is associated with more extensive use of EMS indicating the importance of gender diversity in enhancing corporate environmental responsibility. Moreover, companies with better financial performance are less likely to adopt comprehensive ecological management practices. This paper contributes to the existing body of knowledge by revealing how board diversity is related to financial performance and environment management systems among firms operating in emerging markets. These findings have policy implications for policymakers, business leaders and researchers engaged in sustainable development initiatives to enhance governance mechanisms.

This study draws conclusions from the analysis of the activities of governmental bodies and the public administration system in ensuring the resilience of the country. Resilience is understood as the state and capacity of society to counteract both external and internal threats without significant losses to the vitality and integrity of the nation. The viability of a country depends on a variety of conditions and factors that affect its existence and position at a particular time. The study reveals the management subjects and the mechanisms for implementing state policy. Systemic errors in the implementation of state policies aimed at ensuring national resilience are identified. Furthermore, ways for improving the public administration system as a mechanism that fosters the achievement of this goal are proposed. The main task of public policy for ensuring national resilience is the development of society and the overcoming of uncertainty and chaos in the relationships among individuals, society, and the state under the influence of both internal and external threats. “Freedom” as a systemic category characterizes the quantity and quality of connections among the elements of the system. It can be stated that the greater the freedom afforded to social systems – characterized by fewer moral, ethical, spiritual, legal, and other ties – the lower the level of security within such a society. In addressing the challenge of ensuring the resilience of the country, enhancing the effectiveness of the public administration system demands firm political decisions and operational management.

Exploring work engagement of public sector employees during the COVID-19 pandemic, Namibia

Orientation: In Namibia, the public sector employs a majority of employees which contributes to significant economic growth and development of the country.Research purpose: This study investigated the association among job satisfaction, burnout and work engagement. This study explored if work engagement is experienced differently based on the biographical variables.Motivation for the study: Namibia aims to achieve the sustainable development goals (SDGs), Harambee Prosperity Plan (HPP) and National Development Goals. The state-owned enterprises are required to provide quality services to the nation through their employees. The health and well-being of these employees facilitate the productivity of these state-owned enterprises (SDGs 1, 2, 3, 8, 11 and 16).Research approach/design and method: A total of n = 130 public sector employees were randomly selected and responded to a questionnaire. The questionnaire included demographic questions, the Job Satisfaction Survey, the Maslach Burnout Inventory and the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale. Data analysis was performed through the Statistical Package for Social Sciences software to test the hypotheses of the study.Main findings: Positive relationships were found between job satisfaction, burnout and work engagement. Work engagement reported a positive relationship with burnout. Work engagement is experienced the same in relation to the biographical variables.Practical/managerial implications: The study suggests a constant evaluation of job attitudes, implementation of effective performance management systems, team building activities and implementation of workplace wellness programmes.Contribution/value-add: This study adds to the understanding of job satisfaction, burnout and work engagement within state-owned enterprises in Namibia.

Prediction on Yellowfin Tuna (Thunnus albacares) Fishing Ground in Waters Near the Marshall Islands Based on SMOTETomek‐RF

ABSTRACTThis study monitored 37 longliners fishing in waters near the Marshall Islands from 2020 to 2022 by Liancheng Overseas Fishery (Shenzhen) Co., Ltd.'s operation management system. This study developed nine predictive models on the relationship between catch per unit effort (CPUE) data for yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) and the environmental data. The environmental data integrate 48 variables, including eddy kinetic energy, chlorophyll a concentration, sea surface height, and additional measures of vertical oceanic conditions, alongside spatiotemporal parameters (year, month, day, longitude, and latitude). This study employed four spatial resolutions (0.25° × 0.25°, 0.5° × 0.5°, 1° × 1°, and 2° × 2°) to develop nine predictive models: KNN, RF, GBDT, CART, LightGBM, XGBoost, CatBoost, AdaBoost, and Stacking (RF, KNN, GBDT, and LR). These models, with a daily time resolution, were trained using 75% of the data and tested with the remaining 25%. The optimal spatial resolution and model were determined through a comprehensive comparison of model evaluation metrics across these spatial resolutions. The SMOTETomek algorithm was then applied to resample 75% of the data at the optimal spatial resolution, forming a new training dataset. This dataset was used to refine the model, subsequently tested with the remaining 25% of the data. Results indicated that (1) the optimal spatial resolution is 0.25° × 0.25° and the optimal model is RF; (2) the SMOTETomek algorithm enhances the model's predictive performance; and (3) the developed SMK‐RF model, exhibiting Acc and AUC values of 76.73% and 82.47%, respectively, accurately predicts the central fishing grounds for yellowfin tuna, consisting closely with actual fishing activity.

Performance measurement and management in complex environments: a system of systems approach for the public sector

Issues related to rapidly changing digital environments and turbulent or complex settings, such as the public sector, often hinder successful implementations of Performance Measurement and Management (PMM) systems. Despite the availability of PMM methods, the challenge of implementing successful systems in turbulent settings persists. This article introduces a novel PMM framework employing a System of Systems (SoS) approach, integrating Data Envelopment Analysis and Machine Learning to guide organisational changes by enhancing the efficiency of Decision-Making Units (DMU). Validated by a case study within the Brazilian Navy, the framework demonstrates a significant capacity to interpret the impact of DMU characteristics on operational efficiency and draw actionable insights. Our findings suggest that leveraging SoS principles emphasises adaptability and ongoing improvement through a data-driven process, suggesting the framework’s potential to navigate through complexity by enabling more effective management practices and decision-making. Future research directions include longitudinal studies and the incorporation of technologies to support managerial decision-making.

‘I’d Give My Right Arm to Be Ambidextrous’: Exploration Unit Managers Facing Competing Demands for Differentiation and Integration

This paper examines how managers of internal exploration units – also labeled as innovation labs – address the competing demands of differentiation and integration over time, and the implications for their unit’s ability to execute its intended exploration strategy. Based on a longitudinal study of four exploration units implemented by established firms, we find that their managers face two types of undocumented paradoxical tensions: one related to the evolution of the mandated charter and the other related to the implementation of the performance management system. In response, we show that exploration unit managers adopt four balancing patterns to face these paradoxical tensions: decoupling, conforming, promoting, and synchronizing. These patterns consist of specific combinations of differentiating and/or integrating practices. Drawing on paradox research, we show how each pattern facilitates or impedes the pursuit of the unit’s intended exploration strategy. Our research contributes to the development of a more integrative and systemic understanding of the locus of structural ambidexterity and how it is pursued in practice, and to current debates about the different types of responses adopted when faced with paradoxes. Finally, we provide managerial insights into the management of exploration units and innovation labs within established firms.

Digitalization and Performance Management Systems: A Shipping Agency Case Study

This study examines how the digitalization of information processes embraced by shipping intermediaries (i.e. shipping agencies) within supply chain management (SCM) changes performance management systems (PMSs). This exploratory study uses the lens of stakeholder theory and adopts a case study methodology to investigate a shipping agency based in Italy. It uses primary data collected from semi-structured interviews and secondary data. The data were collected from No-vember 2022 to March 2023. The results indicate that the digitalization of infor-mation accounting processes has boosted the adoption of key performance indi-cators (KPIs) to monitor and evaluate the effectiveness and efficiency of opera-tional processes. The results also reveal that, in the agency relationship between agent and shipowner, the agent does not use the benefits of PMSs to identify stra-tegic KPIs for the business. This study highlights that when adopting PMSs in ship-ping agencies, it is necessary to include both an information accounting and an organizational dimension. Managers should be involved in training programs sup-porting a culture of sharing information through digitalized systems. The main lim-itation of this study, due to its exploratory nature, is the lack of analysis including the shipowner's perspective and the impossibility of generalizing based on the re-sults. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to investigate digitaliza-tion, PMSs, and SCM in terms of the organizational-accounting frameworks of shipping agencies.

Influence Of Resource Availability On Effectiveness Of Performance Management System In Public Secondary Schools In Nairobi County, Kenya

The Teachers Service Commission introduced performance management in public secondary schools in Kenya in 2016. However, the performance management system did not work as per plan and has not attained the expected teaching and learning outcomes. The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of resource availability on the effectiveness of the performance management system in public secondary schools in Nairobi County, Kenya. This research was anchored on the resource-based view theory and used the positivism research philosophy. The study population was 7,797 drawn from 109 public secondary schools in Nairobi County which included 109 principals, 121 deputies, and 7,567 teachers. Multi-stage sampling was applied to select a sample of 369 teachers, 5 principals and 6 deputy principals. A structured questionnaire was applied to gather data and analysis of the collected quantitative data was through descriptive statistics (frequencies, percentages and means) and inferential statistics (simple linear regression analysis). The research findings established that resource availability had a positive and significant influence on effectiveness of PMS in public secondary schools in Nairobi, Kenya (β = 0.810, t = 23.707, p < 0.05). The study recommends that policymakers in education such as the Ministry of Education and Teachers Service Commission to ensure that public secondary schools have the necessary resources, such as teaching materials, technology, and infrastructure, to support effective performance management system. Public secondary schools should also invest in technology that supports performance tracking and management, including software for tracking student progress and teacher performance

Implementation of a performance management system for environmental sustainability in an industrial organization

Abstract The paper explores the implementation of process performance management systems in the automotive industry, specifically focusing on improving the assembly line of an organization within this sector thanks to the introduction of cobots in the line of manufacturing electronic modules used in car seat control systems. With an emphasis on environmental sustainability and circular economy (CE) concepts, the study investigates the positive effects of optimizing mechanical and electromechanical systems within the assembly line. Leveraging concepts such as KAIZEN and Gemba Kaizen, along with the guiding principles of Just-In-Time (JIT), Continuous Improvement and Automation with a Human Touch (JIDOKA), the research aims to elucidate the potential benefits of such enhancements. Key performance indicators (KPIs) including Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE), First Pass Yield (FPY), and scrap rates were considered. Rejects, primarily stemming from human error in part handling, emerged as the major challenge facing this assembly line. To address this issue, collaborative robots were introduced to automate part handling, replacing manual processes with precise and reliable automation. Before the implementation, the cycle time stood at 13.6 units, which was reduced to 12.5 units post-implementation, resulting in a significant increase in productivity equating to 3000 more parts produced per week. OEE increasing from 80% to 87.74%, FPY rising from 96.42% to 98.48%, and the scrap rate decreasing from 0.06% to 0.02%. By addressing inefficiencies at the assembly line level, organizations can achieve significant improvements in performance metrics while concurrently contributing to a greener and more sustainable future.

Sustainable Performance: Unraveling the Nexus between ESG and Performance Management Systems

In the current highly competitive environment, firms are devoting growing levels of attention towards environmental, social, and governance (ESG) standards as a response to external pressure from stakeholders. Consequently, scholars are cur-rently displaying heightened interest in examining the integration of financial and non-financial information, including ESG, within performance measurement sys-tems (PMSs). Adopting broader PMSs would provide companies with a more holis-tic comprehension of their performance, consequently avoiding prioritizing solely financial and economic indicators while neglecting sustainability and social re-sponsibility. We employed the Systematic Literature Review (SLR) protocol to car-ry out the research and conducted a comprehensive exploration of the subject un-der investigation. Specifically, we first constructed the research profile of the sam-ple, offering an overview of the existing knowledge in the field. Subsequently, we performed a meticulous and qualitative examination of the prevalent emerging themes discovered in the sample. Finally, the review concludes by presenting a structured research agenda that outlines various avenues for future research.

Standardized research on multifunctional beacon multi-sensor data acquisition and transmission

Abstract This paper discusses the research on the standardization of data acquisition and transmission for multifunctional beacon systems. The multifunctional beacon system integrates various types of sensing devices and can provide real-time, comprehensive and accurate marine environment and navigation information for ships and shore-based users. However, the system currently faces challenges such as non-uniform data formats and communication protocols, low hardware standardization and integration, and data and network security risks. In order to solve these problems, this paper puts forward the solution of “standard terminal for data acquisition and transmission”, which achieves the compatibility of equipment interface, unified data format, and reliable information security. It lays the foundation for the standardization of multi-purpose beacon system. Through modular design and standardized packaging, the performance, reliability and efficiency of the hardware of multi-purpose beacons are improved, the development and maintenance costs are reduced, and the flexibility of the system is enhanced. The “Standard Terminal for Data Acquisition and Transmission” is applied to the multi-purpose beacon system, and interfaces and integrates with the existing “Operation Management System for Navigation Guarantee” to realize a unified platform for multi-purpose beacons. This research helps to promote the formulation of multi-purpose beacon data format and communication protocol standards at the national or industrial level, provides important reference for the formulation of international standards, and is of great significance in promoting the standardized development and application promotion of multi-purpose beacon technology.
