The construction of a greenhouse as a nursery facility with an ecotourism perspective has been carried out at the Bendosari Orchard, Sumbersari Moyudan, Sleman. The purpose of making this greenhouse is as a means of seeding fruit plants which are a source of income for the Bendosari Orchard, namely guava and avocado and as a tourist attraction to attract more visits to the fruit garden. This research was carried out using the Rural Rapid Appraisal (RRA) approach with 6 stages, namely socialization, interviews, workshops on equalizing perceptions about fruit plant breeding using the grafting method and about greenhouses, surveys of prospective greenhouse construction locations, workshops on planning and building greenhouses and home supervision. glass. With this research, the perception and awareness of garden managers regarding fruit plant nurseries has increased as proven through questionnaires and the success of building a Greenhouse at the Bendosari Orchard. Apart from that, park managers have also realized the need to build greenhouses independently. The greenhouse that was built was made of galvalum, UV plastic and insect-proof glass. This is done to maintain ecological aspects in the greenhouse and in the Bendosari Orchard.

Teaching and learning strategies in a biostatistics course during the pandemic: Perceptions of doctoral students

The study analyzes how ten public health PhD students perceive the teaching strategies implemented in a biostatistics course during the COVID-19 pandemic. The teaching strategies implemented within the course through online meetings were reading reports, critical reading of research articles and analysis of real data using specialized and free software. The sources of information were open dialogues with students at the end of the course and written evaluations regarding methodological aspects. Each student assessed the course and analyzed their learning processes and perceptions. In general, students’ perceptions of time management, class agenda, reading reports, class-by-class reviews, critical reading, and using statistical software with real data were positive. Results are consistent with previous work about students’ perceptions, and these teaching strategies positively transform students’ perception of statistics.

EXPLORING AI ELDERS’ CULTURAL PERCEPTIONS OF DISASTERS AND THE ROLE OF GENERATIVITY IN PREPARING FUTURE GENERATIONS

Abstract Natural and man-made disasters have a great impact on human health, especially for AI Elders. As keepers of cultural and community knowledge, AIAN Elders also serve as guides on how to best support their communities. This study focuses on a Midwestern Tribe’s cultural perceptions of disaster management, specifically being generative, or passing down disaster management knowledge and practices to future generations. In-person semi-structured interviews were conducted with eighteen Elders from the Midwestern Tribe. Recordings were transcribed, de-identified, and coded thematically using an interpretive phenomenological analysis approach. The study received approval from the Tribe’s Department of Emergency Management and the interview guide was reviewed and approved by a Community Advisory Board of six individuals. Elders described past experiences with natural and man-made disasters, including what they did before, during, and after disasters. Elders also explained how people cared for one another, including the importance of interconnectedness with all beings, caring for grandchildren, and the role of the Tribal Government in disaster management. Elders also described how culture shaped disaster management practices, such as traditional practices to follow during a storm, and the important role of Elders in teaching communities what to do when disasters happen. Exploring the role of generativity in passing on disaster-related information is one way to learn how Elders’ knowledge is valued by the community. Findings suggest that Elders can provide important guidance to Tribal governments and public health systems to determine effective disaster management strategies for AIAN communities.

UNLOCKING PAIN MANAGEMENT FOR PEOPLE LIVING WITH DEMENTIA: AN INTERVENTION TO BE TAILORED

Abstract Effective pain management for persons living with dementia (PLWD) is critical to quality of life and could be achieve through rehabilitative care. However, it’s not well understood how physical therapists (PTs) and occupational therapists (OTs) develop and deliver treatment plans for PLWD, as most pain studies and evidence-based guidelines explicitly exclude those with cognitive impairment. In this qualitative descriptive study, we explored clinicians’ perceptions of pain management in PLWD as recommended by available guidelines. Semi-structured virtual interviews of 6 PTs and 4 OTs from 4 outpatient facilities were all female, with an average age of 36.7 (SD 8.78) years and an average clinical experience of 7.01 (SD 4.81) years. We analyzed transcripts using conventional content analysis and identified a consistent theme that rehabilitative-based interventions for pain management among PLWD need to be “carefully tailored.” Clinicians explained that the plan of care they designed for PLWD need to be tailored to the patient’s underlying pain mechanism, physical function, and comorbidities that can affect their participation in therapy, to avoid activities that exacerbate pain symptoms, and take into consideration the extent of memory loss that the person is experiencing and their preferences. This study highlights the important factors practicing clinicians take into consideration when developing rehabilitative programs to manage pain among PLWD. These findings can guide the updating of current pain management guidelines so they are more inclusive and tailored to PLWD.

The Bitter and the Sweet: Managerial Perceptions of the Well-Being of Ethiopian Female Apparel and Horticultural Workers

Observers of Ethiopia’s entry into export-oriented global value chains generally agree that social upgrading is crucial if these chains’ largely female workforce is to reap the benefits of participation. They disagree, however, on the extent to which a ‘business case’ can be made to involve in this upgrading the managers who link frontline workers to international buyers. This article takes a novel approach to these questions by directly asking these managers and those who advise them on human resources how they understand the well-being of their frontline workers. Drawing on 37 qualitative semi-structured interviews, we find great variation in the extent to which such actors are interested in pursuing worker well-being and social upgrading beyond basic compliance. This is indeed due in part to the sectoral dynamics that have shaped managers’ views of what constitutes a profitable labour regime but also by sociocultural factors that include managers’ own national contexts, gender and class.

The Development Strategy of Voluntourism in Tourism Villages at Badung Regency

World tourism before the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic showed positive growth, especially with the birth of new tourism products such as voluntourism. Badung as one of the tourist destinations in Bali has the opportunity to develop voluntourism. This research aims to determine the perceptions, and motivations of tourists, managers, and tourist village communities in Badung Regency to make voluntourism an alternative tourism, as well as formulate strategies for developing voluntourism to support tourism development. This research was designed using a qualitative approach through data collection and analysis using observation, questionnaires, interviews, and literature study. Data were analyzed to understand the relationship between the structure of the voluntourism implementation process between organizers, tourists, and the community, and the impact of the voluntourism program. This research is based on voluntourism theory, voluntourist perceptions, motivation, supply and demand for voluntourism, consumer behavior, alternative tourism, and sustainable tourism. These theories are the basis for explaining the research concept clearly and measurably regarding the views of tourists, the community, and organizers or implementers of voluntourism to make voluntourism alternative tourism under the principles of sustainable tourism development in Badung Regency. The results and discussion show that the perception of tourists, the community, and tourist village managers regarding the implementation of voluntourism in tourist villages in Badung Regency is positive because it provides benefits to the community; The motivation of tourists to make voluntourism an alternative tourism in tourist villages in Badung Regency is well received because it can combine various holiday activities and social work activities with the community in tourist villages in Badung Regency; voluntourism is becoming a new force as alternative tourism that provides real and positive multi-effect benefits to the community; and voluntourism is used as a new strategy. This research concludes that voluntourism can be accepted as a potential alternative to tourism because it provides positive benefits for the community and managers of tourist villages in Badung Regency, and can be used as a strategy to support sustainable tourism development in tourist villages in Badung Regency.

Determinants of sickness absence in police: Case study of Abu Dhabi police department, UAE

Sickness absence among employees is reported to reduce organization profits and performance and thus threaten the organization's existence in the market. The monitoring and reporting of data on sickness absence is considered a crucial element of reactive health and safety control systems in organizations. It is one of the major indicators of organizational continuous commitment to improving the quality of working conditions. However, sickness absence in Police in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is less investigated. The Occupational Health and Safety Survey developed for this study was distributed to 1317 employees of the Capital Police Directorate of Abu Dhabi Police. The survey was answered by 760 employees (58 %). While 230 (17 %) refused to participate, 259 (20 %) did not return the surveys, and 68 (5 %) were not surveyed as they were on authorized long-term leave for various reasons (and did not receive the survey). This study analyzes if the psychosocial work factors, physical work exposure factors, and employee's perception of the health and safety management system predict sickness absence in the Abu Dhabi Police after taking into account the other covariates. This study found no association between job control and the risk of sickness absence, in contrast to findings from other studies. There was also no association between psychological job demand and the perception of health and safety management with the risk of sickness absence in this study. Officers who fit the ‘job strain’ category did not have a significant increase in the risk of sickness absence in this study. However, high levels of combined physical exposures reported a significant relation with sickness absence. In conclusion, this, being one of the first studies in the region, provides insights on work factors and perception of HSE on sickness absence and provides recommendations within the context of the region for future studies and address sickness absence among police in the UAE.

ASSESSING THE IMPACT OF COVID-19 ON PROFITABILITY AND LIQUIDITY IN THE BANKING SECTOR - INSIGHTS FROM BANK MANAGERS IN THE REPUBLIC OF SERBIA

This research delves into the multifaceted relationship between profitability, liquidity, and various determinants within the banking sector, with a particular focus on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. By investigating the experiences and perceptions of bank managers in the Republic of Serbia, we gain a comprehensive understanding of how the pandemic affected key banking performance metrics. The study employs a structured questionnaire distributed to bank directors in major cities, resulting in an 80% response rate.Our analysis of the survey data reveals critical insights into the responses of bank managers, highlighting the significance of corporate governance mechanisms, competition levels, operational efficiency, and liquidity management strategies in shaping a bank’s profitability. Furthermore, we examine how regulatory measures introduced during the pandemic influenced bank performance.In addition to insights from international studies, this paper provides valuable findings specific to the Serbian banking sector. The results offer crucial implications for bank management, policymaking, and future business strategies. They underscore the importance of addressing challenges and seizing opportunities in the evolving banking landscape.

Identification and assessment of supply chain risks: The case of food hubs

AbstractThe supply chain risk management literature highlights the importance of ex‐ante identification and assessment of risks to ensure continuity of firms, in particular, and the high performance of supply chains in which they operate, in general. Supply chain disruptions are harmful and costly for firms. The risk of such disruptions can be particularly consequential for firms in emerging industries that lack resources and for which dominant organizational and supply chain designs do not yet exist. Within local and regional food supply chains, food hubs are nascent enterprises coordinating these supply chains. Building off the existing supply chain risk management literature, this study identifies and assesses the perceived supply chain risks faced by U.S. food hubs. The study employs an exploratory sequential mixed methods research design and the Failure Mode and Effect Analysis methodology for this purpose. The results show risks related to imbalances in food supply and demand, logistical delays, human resources, and infrastructure capacity limitations were perceived to be the highest priority supply chain risks for the U.S. food hubs before the COVID‐19 pandemic. The study further provides insights on association between food hub characteristics and risk, as well as association between risk preferences and risk perceptions of food hub managers [EconLit Citations: L29 Other (Firm Supply Chain Risk Management)].

Perception of Information Technology managers about the risk management practices in IT acquisitions of the Municipality of Fortaleza in the light of NBR ISO 31000

Risk management in the public sector is a key tool for managers to increase safety and performance in the implementation of public policies. Thus, this paper aims to analyze, through the NBR ISO 31000:2009, the adherence to good risk management practices in the acquisitions of Information Technology (IT) by the Municipality of Fortaleza (PMF). The descriptive research used as procedures the survey and as the approach to the problem is characterized as qualitative. To this end, a structured questionnaire in the form of a checklist was applied to representatives of the PMF's ICT Technical Group, in the months of May and June 2022. The results indicate that the risk treatment and risk management process registration processes were the ones that recorded least adherence. It is concluded that, in general, there is low adherence to the processes related to risk management in IT acquisitions by the PMF, considering NBR ISO 31000:2009. Several reflections can be carried out from the results in order to generate an evolution of the risk management process linked to the PMF's IT acquisition process. The standard`s processes are presented as guides for the improvement itself.

Análise da gestão das transferências voluntárias executadas no estado do Ceará na perspectiva dos gestores de instrumentos

This paper aims to analyze the perception of instrument managers of the agencies of the Executive Power of Ceará about the management of voluntary transfers executed in the state, using efficiency and effectiveness indicators as parameters. Voluntary transfers are a type of intergovernmental transfer that occurs by means of an agreement of financial resources between public and private entities. The instrument used was a questionnaire with twenty-five questions, most of them structured, and some of them using a Likert scale. The results showed that the respondents consider the technological system that operates the transfers and the legislation as important allies for the efficiency of the process. On the efficiency side, the accountability stage stands out as an important factor in the process that has major bottlenecks to be overcome. The article presents as originality the realization of an evaluation of the management process applied to the execution of voluntary transfers in Ceará, which has as practical results the possibility of giving decision makers of this public policy a systemic view of the whole process, knowing its critical levels and its development potential.

Conditions for successful implementation of couple-based collaborative management model of diabetes among community-dwelling older Chinese: a qualitative comparative analysis

BackgroundDiabetes mellitus is a prevalent and potentially devastating chronic illness affecting many older adults. Given spousal involvement in many aspects of diabetes management, coping with their partners is increasingly seen as a potential solution to make up for limited resources. This study aimed to identify the key conditions for optimal implementation of couple-based collaborative management model (CCMM) among Chinese older couples with type 2 diabetes mellitus.MethodsOlder couples and community healthcare practitioners were selected according to couples’ joint intervention attendance rate and community’s average attendance rate. This mixed methods research consisted of a qualitative phase and a quantitative phase. In the qualitative phase, in-depth interviews were conducted among 12 pairs of couples in the intervention group and 4 corresponding practitioners, in the follow-up period of the multicentered RCT from January to April 2022. Qualitative comparative analysis (QCA) in the quantitative phase to identify conditions influencing CCMM’s implementation and to explore necessary and sufficient combinations of conditions (i.e., solutions) for improving patients’ glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) control (outcome).ResultsKey conditions included implementation process, couple’s role in diabetes management, their belief and perception of CCMM, as well as objective obstacles and subjective initiative for behavior change. Accordingly, major barriers in CCMM’s implementation were patients’ strong autonomy (particularly among husbands), misbelief and misperception about diabetes management as a result of low literacy, and mistrust of the practitioners. QCA further revealed that no single condition was necessary for effective HbA1c control, while three types of their combinations would be sufficient. Solution 1 and 2 both comprised the presence of spousal willingness to help, plus correct belief and perception of diabetes management, well embodying the utility of couple collaborative management in supporting patients’ HbA1c control. On the other hand, solution 3 indicated that high-quality implementation even without spousal support, can promote the patient’s subjective initiative to overcome objective obstacles, suggesting enhanced self-management for HbA1c control.ConclusionsTailored CCMM should be implemented in reference to older couple’s preferences and literacy levels, to ensure intervention fidelity, and establish correct understanding of collaborative management among them.

Risk management behaviour in digital factories: the influence of technology and task uncertainty on managerial risk responses

PurposeThis study aims to advance a behavioural approach towards understanding how managerial perception impacts the enactment of responses to risk management during the implementation of digital technologies in industrial operations and supply chains. The purpose is to investigate the influence of (digital) technology and task uncertainty on the risk perception of managers and how this impacts risk responses adopted by managers.Design/methodology/approachFollowing an exploratory theory elaboration approach, the authors collected more than 80 h of interview material from 53 expert interviews. These interviews were conducted with representatives of 46 German companies that have adopted digital technologies for different industrial applications within manufacturing, assembly and logistics processes.FindingsThe findings provide nuanced insights on how individual and combined sources of uncertainty (technology and task uncertainty) impact the perception of decision makers and the resulting managerial responses adopted. The authors uncover the important role played by the interaction between digital technology and human being in the context of industrial operations. The exploratory study shows that the joint collaboration between humans and technologies has negative implications for managerial risk responses regardless of positive or negative perception, and therefore, requires significant attention in future studies.Research limitations/implicationsThe empirical base for this study is limited to German companies (mainly small and medium size). Moreover, German culture can be characterised by a high uncertainty avoidance and this may also limit the generalizability of the findings.Practical implicationsManagers should critically revise their perception of different types of digital technologies and be aware of the impact of human-machine interaction. Thereby, they should investigate more systematic approaches of risk identification and assessment.Originality/valueThis paper focuses on the managerial risk responses in the context of digitalisation projects with practical insights of 53 expert interviews.

Awareness and perceptions of coral reef ecosystem use and management in ‘pseudo community’ and government-managed marine protected areas in Kwale county, Kenya

Both local ‘pseudo community’ and government-managed Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) are fundamental tools in the protection of coral reef ecosystems from human-driven threats globally. Inclusive decision-making between the local community and the government in co-management is vital to the success of MPAs. Consequently, understanding community awareness and perception of the coral reef ecosystem is an essential aspect for transformative change in the sustainable use of coral reef ecosystem services. This study aimed to assess and compare the community's awareness and perceptions of coral reef ecosystem benefits in the face of different management options between Diani Chale and Kisite-Mpunguti MPAs in south coast Kenya. We collected qualitative and quantitative data through 16 focus group discussions (n = 147) and household surveys (n = 412 in Diani Chale and n = 413 in Kisite-Mpunguti MPAs) on communities living in villages within 5 kilometers of the shoreline of the selected MPAs. The findings revealed that 77.6% (640/825) of the respondents were aware of coral reef ecosystems in their area. There was a higher awareness of coral reefs among respondents in government-managed Kisite-Mpunguti MPA (84.5%, 349/413) compared to pseudo-community-managed Diani Chale MPA (70.6%, 291/412). A higher proportion of respondents in Kisite-Mpunguti relied on coral reef resources for their livelihoods (p < 0.01). Moreover, a significantly higher percentage of respondents from Kisite-Mpunguti agreed or strongly agreed that local people derive economic benefits from the establishment of MPAs compared to Diani Chale (67.6% versus 52.2%, p < 0.001). Furthermore, more respondents from Kisite-Mpunguti expressed positive support for the establishment of more government-managed MPAs (55.69% versus 32%), and Locally Managed Marine Areas (53.9% versus 38.86%). Based on these findings, inclusive support by local communities towards coral reef conservation is recommended to increase their participation in positive environmental behaviors in Kenya and other countries in the Western Indian Ocean region. Additionally, improved political goodwill is required to support the creation of more and larger areas under marine protection, especially in the Diani Chale area.

Academic management of university virtual education: An analysis from the perception of students, teachers, and managers

Currently, many universities are developing virtual education as an option for the training of future professionals. The objective of this study is to analyze aspects of the academic management of university virtual education from the perspective of students, teachers, and administrators. A mixed approach and non-experimental design were applied. Semi-structured interviews and surveys were used. The participants were 8 managers, 340 students, and 75 teachers from Peru, Colombia, Mexico, and Spain, from universities where virtual education is offered. The results show that 51% of teachers agree with the management, 50% accept the adequate use of technological tools, and only 20% say that virtual classes are effective. Concerning students, 45% agree with the management, but only 15% feel that they are attended to when problems arise in the virtual modality. The managers determine relevant aspects such as the importance of teacher training, having technological tools to ensure learning, and providing a comprehensive academic service, as is provided in the in-person modality. It is concluded that academic management in the virtual modality should prioritize the improvement of satisfaction levels of both students and teachers through adaptation processes, training, performance evaluation, attention, and problem-solving, as well as the use of virtual platforms that allow the development of competencies of the graduate profile and contribute to the comprehensive training of future professionals.

Development and validation of the Design-for-Safety (DfS) climate measurement tool

Design-for-Safety (DfS) is a promising intervention to address safety and health risks in construction. At the same time, past research on construction safety and health consistently emphasized the importance of measuring safety climate in ensuring good safety performance. However, existing construction safety climate measurement tools are focused on measuring construction workers’ perception of safety management within their projects or organizations. Therefore, existing construction safety climate construct and measurement tools cannot be directly applied in the DfS context, which is focused on the upstream project team comprising designers and developers. Thus, the DfS climate construct and a corresponding measurement instrument were created. DfS climate is defined as project team members’ shared perceptions of the DfS policies, practices, and procedures that arise from the behaviours they observe getting rewarded, supported, and expected. With a sample of 242 responses, the questionnaire was subjected to exploratory factor analysis. The instrument consisted of 19 questions. These questions were split into five dimensions: participation of leader, member cooperation, member participation, project resources, and expectations for stakeholder representation. The study found that DfS climate was linked to outcome variables such as whether design changes arising from DfS review would be incorporated into the design. The research makes an academic contribution by creating the concept of DfS climate, accounting for the cognitive aspect of performing DfS. In addition, practical contributions are made as organizations can measure the DfS climate for their projects and find areas to improve.

Plastic Management on the Kelapa Island, Indonesia: Analysis of Community Perception and Participation

Plastic waste is a substance that is no longer used and contains certain elastic materials that require heat energy to decompose. Plastic waste has a longer time to decompose, which is about 20 to 100 years. The purpose of this study is to identify public perception and participation in plastic waste management, analyze the relationship between internal and external factors and perceptions of plastic waste management, and analyze the relationship between public perception and participation in plastic waste management. The research was conducted through explanatory research with a cross-sectional design. The population in this study is the people of Kelapa Island, Seribu Islands, DKI Jakarta with a sample of 300 respondents. The results showed that there was a relationship between knowledge (p-value = 0.001) and the role of government/community leaders (p-value = 0.002) with perceptions of plastic waste management. There is a relationship between public perception and participation in plastic waste management (p-value = 0.000). The conclusion shows that the perception of the community as a whole is positive and community participation in the management of plastic waste is already high. It is hoped that the programs that have been successfully implemented need to be maintained, improved, and monitored regularly.

Regional Economic Environment: Insights from North Macedonia’s Agricultural Sector

Abstract The role of agriculture in the broader development process is extensively explored, but with no particular focus on the direct and indirect linkages among factors considering the influence of the business environment on the regional economy. This study explores the managerial perception of agricultural companies in North Macedonia regarding the status, prospects, and challenges for agriculture within the regional economy when having cooperation with Albania, Serbia, and Montenegro. A comprehensive five-stage methodology was applied to assess the factors of influence underlying the pros and cons of agricultural development. These stages encompassed a literature review, the construction of a theoretical model, data collection, principal component analysis, and the application of structural equation modeling. Three direct and two indirect linkages are hypothesized for constructing a model that quantifies the impacts of the business environment essential for the regional economy. The highest significant threshold is found for the direct path of COVID-19, followed by a strong negative direct connection to the Russia-Ukraine crisis, and a medium direct effect of governmental support. The latter indicated the Russia-Ukraine crisis and COVID-19 as having extremely strong indirect connections to the regional economy. So, supporting measures and activities of government is identified as the key issue for further growth and development of the agricultural sector in North Macedonia. The proposed model can be easily adopted and applied to other countries to screen and evaluate agricultural development. The study informs main policymakers on how to approach the challenges of the regional economy and to improve the country’s agricultural outlook.
