Pentecostal Theological Education in a Theological and Missiological Perspective

While Pentecostals have been busy in building Bible schools and more recently theological seminaries and other institutions of higher learning, they have paid little or no attention to the theological basis of their education. Usually theological education follows the precepts and standards of Evangelical and other Conservative traditions. This essay seeks to reflect on the distinctively Pentecostal features of Pentecostal theological education, ask some critical questions concerning the ways Pentecostals have borrowed categories, lessons, and even materials from other movements, as well as provide some constructive thoughts towards a more authentic expression of Pentecostal training in academic settings.

Between This and That: Reality and Sacramentality in the Pentecostal Worldview

AbstractThe Pentecostal worldview is often seen in conflict with a sacramental worldview. In contrast, the authors of this article argue that sacramentality and reality are helpful terms that together illuminate the Pentecostal understanding of being-in-the-world. The essay delineates the challenges and opportunities in bringing both notions into dialogue and suggests that sacramentality is not an optional but a necessary component for a fuller understanding of Pentecostalism. The narrative underlying this proposal follows the tension between a 'this-is-that' and a 'this-is-not-that' hermeneutic characteristic of early modern-day Pentecostals. Central to such an endeavor is an understanding of how the dialogue between Pentecostal and sacramental theology informs and challenges both sides.

The Pathos of Theology as a Pneumatological Derivative or a Poiemata of the Spirit? A Review Essay of Reinhard Hütter's Pneumatological and Ecclesiological Vision of Theology

AbstractReinhard Hütter is a leading theologian who has made important contributions to ecclesiology, pneumatology, and Christian rationality, but his most fundamental one is to the nature of theology and theological method. What makes his work of particular interest to Pentecostals is its attempt to give theology a pneumatological and ecclesiological ground. He suggests that the pathos of theology is doctrina and core church practices; theology receives its character and content from church doctrine and practices. Although successful in respect to his ecclesiological program, his proposal does not give theology a direct pneumatological ground and pathos. Nevertheless, his notion that theology receives its pathos from church doctrine and practices can be adapted to suggest a pneumatological pathos of Christian experience and theology. The result is a proposal that the Holy Spirit conditions the pathos of Christian experience and theology, which provides a theological and explicitly a pneumatological pathos not only for Pentecostal experience and theology but also for the role of Pentecostal experience in developing a uniquely "orthopathic" ecumenical contribution to Christian theology.

The Missions Theology Of Early Pentecost: Call, Challenge, and Opportunity

AbstractThis article explores three historical components of Pentecostal theology that influenced Pentecostal missionary women by examining missions after the Pentecostal revival of the early twentieth century. This article presents four case studies of such Pentecostals and their responses to Pentecostal experiences and missionary careers for ongoing theological consideration about what it means to 'Go into all the world' as a Pentecostal. According to this study, the Pentecostal experience and reliance on the Holy Spirit was a significant part of Pentecostal women's call to and empowerment for missions, in facing the challenges of missionary service with Pentecostal eschatology, and in following the biblical mandate and narrative to serve in the power of the Spirit with gospel proclamation and accompanying 'signs and wonders'.

An Apologia for Divine Impassibility: Toward Pentecostal Prolegomena

AbstractThis article focuses on the possibilities of maintaining divine impassibility for the viability of Pentecostal theology. The author integrates both his own experience as a believer and his sensibilities as an academic to provide an alternative narration of divine affectivity from the popular one advocated by other Pentecostal thinkers. Given the particularities of Pentecostal worship and the implications of a current theological movement to retrieve this feature of the ancient church's testimony, the author suggests that divine impassibility can be a mechanism by which to cultivate both critical and wonder-filled sensibilities among Pentecostal scholars.

Reading in Tongues: The Case for a Pneumatalogical Hermeneutic in Conversation with James K. Smith

AbstractJames K. Smith's recent article "Thinking in Tongues" has made an important contribution in mining Pentecostal instincts and practices for their theological foundations and implications. He not only strikes a chord with Pentecostal readers, but presents a powerful apologetic for Pentecostal theology to non-Pentecostal readers also. The following article uses Smith's thinking as a springboard to introduce a distinctively Pentecostal hermeneutic that seeks an encounter with the Spirit in the reading of the text and is rooted in the mission of the church.

Continuing the Conversation on King: My Really Final Response to Tony Moon?

AbstractTony Richie contends that Bishop J.H. King and a close circle of comrades and colleagues, influential in early Pentecostalism as leading administrators, educators, thinkers, and writers, and including G.F. Taylor and A.A. Boddy, exhibited various levels of (what today is known as) inclusivism regarding Christian theology of religions. He suggests this striking discovery has significant import for the developing field of Pentecostal theology of religions. However, as Tony Moon has rightly pointed out, King did not present non-Christian religions as direct divine instruments or agents of Christ's atonement benefits. Richie agrees with Moon that King primarily encourages hope for some of the humanly unevangelized. Yet Richie, in agreement with Veli-Matti Kärkkäinen, also argues that King's thought can be particularly complex. King's complexity especially shows in his perception of the trans-historical 'essential Christ' and 'religion of Christ'. Thus, Richie persistently suggests that at least King, but probably Taylor too, holds out a well-grounded but cautiously guarded optimism, not so much on world religions per se, as in the boundless Christ and an unbounded—but not boundary-less—religion firmly and forever rooted in the revelation of and redemption in the Lord Jesus Christ.

Coloring Outside the Lines: Pentecostal Parallels with Expressionism. The Work of the Spirit in Place, Time, and Secular Society?

AbstractThis article examines the historic parallels between the development of American Pentecostalism and the formation of German Expressionism. German Expression is examined through the grid of Restorationism, African Culture, Experience, and heightened Expressions found in early American Pentecostalism. After their parallels are drawn out, significant questions regarding the role of the Spirit in relation to these separate cultural circles are explored. Answers to some of these questions encourage Pentecostal theology to look deeper into the concept of Sacred Time. Included is a look at the possible intersection of the Spirit and the artist community, calling for deeper Pentecostal engagement with the arts.

The Crucified God and the Groaning Spirit: Toward a Pentecostal Theologia Crucis in Conversation with Jürgen Moltmann

AbstractThis study of Moltmann's theology of the cross explores its significance for Pentecostal thought and practice. It is argued here that Moltmann's theologia crucis, and the pneumatological and ecclesiological implications derived from it, promises to help Pentecostals provide a muchneeded account of suffering grounded in a genuinely Pentecostal theology of the cross.

Reconciliation and Renunciation of Status as God's Final Aim for Humanity: New Testament Thoughts on the Church's Mission and Unity

AbstractNot infrequently the concern for unity (both ecumenical and social) and the concern for mission are played off against each other among Pentecostals. In this article it is argued that these two topics neither oppose each other nor do they simply reflect the two sides of the same coin. Rather, the Missio Dei precisely is to bring back to unity all aspects of life in a world suffering from division and alienation. By analyzing the relation of mission and unity in some of the New Testament books, it is argued that the mission of the church is inseparably linked to the topic of unity; division cannot take place without harming the church's mission to be a visible demonstration of God's renewing power in this world. Some concluding implications for a Pentecostal theology of missions are outlined.

The Church as Eucharistic Fellowship: A British Apostolic Contribution toward a Pentecostal Ecclesiology

This article highlights one particular aspect of British Pentecostal ecclesiological thought, namely eucharistic thought within the Apostolic Church, and seeks to demonstrate the relationship which existed between thinking on the Breaking of Bread and wider issues of ecclesiology. An examination is also made of thinking on the relationship between the Lord's Table and matters of particular interest to Pentecostal theology, namely the gifts of the Spirit and divine healing. These in turn both reinforce and are reinforced by a pneumatological understanding of the sacrament, which calls into question prevailing opinions of a Pentecostal approach to the interpretation of the significance of the Lord's Supper.

Of Lizards, Misfortune and Deliverance: Pentecostal Soteriology in the Life of a Migrant

This article analyses why Nigerian migrants in Johannesburg, South Africa, are attracted to Pentecostal churches and the theological landscape of Pentecostal Christianity: what it is in these churches and their way of practising religion that makes particular sense for migrants. It argues that there are three reasons: first, the manner in which Pentecostalism employs the body in prayer allows migrants to achieve successful connection and communication with the ultimate more easily than in the Protestant tradition. Second, the theology of deliverance, through which a believer is enabled to break out of the bounds of evil, allows migrants to deal with the (social, economic, political, kinship) forces that they see as causing the misfortune they are experiencing. Third, and critically, this theology of evil allows migrants to deal with their kin relationships which are strained when migrants achieve some form of prosperity. The Pentecostal tradition is particularly helpful to migrants because they are able to link their experiences of misfortune and difficulties into the Pentecostal theology of evil; because the Pentecostal focus on the body allows migrants with little financial resources to use what they have, their body, to communicate with the ultimate; and because the positive understanding of the material in Pentecostalism allows migrants to make sense of their situation of depravity as one that does not define them as persons.

Nigerian Pentecostal Theology in Global Perspective

This paper discusses the nature of Nigerian Pentecostal theology and its contributions to intercultural theology, with particular reference to deliverance and success-oriented theologies. It suggests that Nigerian Pentecostal theologies resonate with the search for spiritual power in traditional piety. However, they are elaborated in forms that are consistent with global Pentecostal culture and modern modes of living, and are practical and progressive in orientation.
