This study aims to examine the relationship between Islamic parenting patterns of parents and students' learning motivation at SMK X Wates. This study is motivated by the importance of the role of parents in shaping children's learning motivation, especially in the context of education based on Islamic values. The research method used is quantitative with a survey approach, where data is collected through questionnaires given to students. The population used for this study was 150 students. Then the data obtained were analyzed using statistical techniques to see the relationship between Islamic parenting patterns and learning motivation. The results of the study obtained an asymp sig-2 tailed value of .074 <0.05 which indicates that there is a significant relationship between Islamic parenting patterns of parents and students' learning motivation. This study is expected to provide insight for parents to apply effective parenting patterns in increasing children's learning motivation.

Beyond Intrinsic Motivation: The Role of Autonomous Motivation in User Experience

Motivation and autonomy are fundamental concepts in Human–Computer Interaction (HCI), yet in User Experience (UX) research they have remained surprisingly peripheral. We draw on Self-Determination Theory (SDT) to analyse autonomous and non-autonomous patterns of motivation in 497 interaction experiences. Using latent profile analysis, we identify five distinct patterns of motivation in technology use—‘motivational profiles’—associated with significant differences in need satisfaction, affect, and perceived usability. Users’ descriptions of these experiences also reveal qualitative differences between profiles: from intentional, purposive engagement, to compulsive use which users themselves consider unhealthy. Our results complicate exclusively positive notions of intrinsic motivation and clarify how extrinsic motivation can contribute to positive UX. Based on these findings, we identify open questions for UX and SDT: addressing ‘hedonic amotivation’—negative experiences in activities which are intrinsically motivated but not otherwise valued—and ‘design for internalisation’—scaffolding healthy and sustainable patterns of engagement over time.

Incumbent responses to anticipated discontinuous regulatory change: The case of Scope 3 CO2 reporting in the European steel industry

Regulatory change can be highly discontinuous for organizations. Yet, despite the vast discontinuous change and institutionalism literatures, our understanding of incumbent behavior in response to anticipated discontinuous regulatory change is limited. To address this issue, we conducted a qualitative analysis in the European steel industry, which is facing prospective discontinuous regulatory change on Scope 3 reporting. Our findings offer new insights into this understudied field by elaborating on incumbents' expectations for the future, their ensuing motivations, and their taken or planned actions. We find evidence for heterogenous adaptation behavior that manifests in three motivational patterns: Incentives for early movers, reasons for hesitation, and disincentives preventing implementation. These patterns are a result of incumbents’ varying expectations of future circumstances, opportunities, and risks, and they lead to different actions incumbents plan or take in response to the anticipated change. Our study contributes to the theoretical understanding of regulatory change as a distinct form of discontinuous change, sheds light on incumbent behavior at an early stage of a discontinuous change prior to its actual occurrence, and highlights that adaptation to a discontinuous regulatory change can have both positive and negative effects on incumbents. Our process model enables practitioners to make more informed decisions in the context of discontinuous regulatory change and policymakers may use our findings to improve the regulatory design process and subsequent compliance. Finally, our study opens up numerous pathways for future research.

Exploring Individual Components of Sport Persistence in the Light of Gender, Education, and Level and Type of Sport.

Background/Objectives: Sport persistence can be coded as an indicator of sport performance and commitment, incorporating personality traits such as resilience, adaptive coping, and positive personality traits. Thus, athletes do not merely persist in sporting activities but are qualitatively committed to them. Methods: In the present research, we used a qualitative methodology to investigate the factors underlying sport persistence, using Bronfenbrenner's socio-ecological model. In total, 133 high school and college student-athletes were surveyed in a semi-structured interview study. We set the following research question: How do the factors involved in developing sport persistence vary across athletes' gender, level of study, and level and type of sport? Data were analyzed along the lines of grounded theory. ATLAS.ti and IBM SPSS 22.0 statistical software were used for the analysis. Results: Our analysis divided individual motivation into intrinsic (health promotion, habituation, becoming a competitive athlete, self-improvement, self-actualization, relaxation, and sport enjoyment) and extrinsic motivation (family-related motivation, coach, social relationships, competition, livelihood, recognition). The cross-tabulation analysis revealed that contrary to the general trend, no significant differences can be experienced in the core motivational patterns contributing to sport persistence. However, significant differences could be detected concerning the level of education, level of sporting activity, and type of sport. Conclusions: Our findings not only shed light on the unique factors underlying sport persistence, but also challenge the trends observed in traditional sport motivation analyses. This insight could potentially revolutionize how we approach youth sport promotion and physical activity among young people, making our research highly relevant and impactful.

Exploring motivational patterns in high-performing pianists: evidence from Cliburn competitors' biographies.

This research examines the motivational patterns of high-performing classical pianists, characterized by a combination of implicit motives (i.e., non-conscious preferences for specific incentives). Utilizing the Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count (LIWC) software, I analyzed textual data from biographies of 107 pianists (i.e., Juniors aged 13-17: n = 38; Professionals aged 18-30: n = 30; Amateurs aged 35 and older: n = 39) participating in the prestigious 2022-2023 Van Cliburn Competitions. My results showed distinct profiles of implicit motives among pianists compared to non-pianists, with significantly higher need for achievement and need for power. While professional pianists exhibited the lowest level of need for power, junior pianists demonstrated the highest level of need for affiliation. Gender and age predicted part of pianists' implicit motives. Male pianists demonstrated higher need for achievement than females. Finally, age negatively predicted need for affiliation. These findings highlight the motivational patterns within the classical piano community, offering theoretical implications for understanding implicit motives and practical applications for pianist education. Study limitations and future research directions are discussed.

A Data Mining-Based Method to Disclose Usage Behavior Patterns of Fresh Air Systems in Beijing Dwellings during the Heating Season

As the popularity of fresh air systems (FAS) in residential buildings increases, exploring the behavioral characteristics of their use can help to provide a comprehensive understanding of the potential for demand flexibility in residential buildings. However, few studies in the past have focused on the personalized usage behavior of FAS. To fill this gap, this study proposes a method based on data mining techniques to reveal the behavioral patterns of FAS usage and the motivations behind them, including motivational patterns, operation duration patterns, and human–machine interaction patterns, for 13 households in Beijing. The simultaneously obtained behavioral patterns, in turn, form the basis of association rules, which can classify FAS usage behavior into two typical residential user profiles containing user behavioral characteristics. This study can not only provide more accurate assumptions and inputs for behavioral stochastic models but also provide data support for the development and optimization of demand response strategies.

Emotion regulation motives in adolescence shape regulatory strategy use.

Emotion regulation (ER) motives (i.e., the reasons individuals regulate their emotions) are key factors influencing the development of adolescents' ER abilities. However, age- and gender-related trends in adolescents' ER motives, as well as their impact on the use of ER strategies, remain unclear. We recruited 5629 participants from two schools in Southwest China (M = 15.18, SD = 1.73; 45.11% male) to complete the Emotion Regulation Goals Scale and the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire. Linear and polynomial regression analyses were conducted to examine age- and gender-related differences in ER motive patterns. We then tested whether different patterns of ER motives were also associated with participants' habitual use of two common ER strategies. This study revealed nonlinear and diverse age-related differences in adolescents' contra-hedonic and pro-social motives, with notable fluctuations in contra-hedonic motives. Boys exhibited higher levels of contra-hedonic motives, while girls showed higher levels of performance motives. Moreover, ER motives were significantly and broadly associated with individuals' habitual use of reappraisal and suppression. More specifically, pro-hedonic motives were associated with greater use of reappraisal, while contra-hedonic motives were linked to higher levels of suppression. Furthermore, instrumental motives (i.e., performance, pro-social, and impression management) were positively related to both reappraisal and suppression. These findings enhance our understanding of how adolescents' ER motives vary by age and gender, as well as the crucial role different ER motives play in shaping patterns of ER strategy use.

For sex, ulterior motives or relief: a latent profile analysis of individuals who sext their relationship partner(s)

ABSTRACT Sexting has emerged as a prevalent avenue for individuals to express their sexuality and desires. To explore the diverse motivations to engage in sexting a comprehensive review of existing literature and analysis of survey data from 109 individuals from the United States (collected online 2019, mean age of 29.0 years, 56% identified as female) we employ Latent Profile Analysis (LPA) to identify distinct profiles of sexting motivations. Three primary profiles emerge: those who sext primarily for sexual purposes, individuals who sext to alleviate relational anxiety and those engaging in sexting for ulterior motives such as body image reinforcement or instrumental/aggressive reasons. Notably, each profile exhibits unique patterns of attachment styles and motivations for engaging in sexting behaviours. While the largest number of participants sext to initiate sexual encounters with their partner(s) (n = 44, 40.4%), a significant subset sexts as a coping mechanism for relational insecurities (n = 34, 31.2%) or with manipulative intentions (n = 31, 28.4%). These findings underscore the complexity of sexting behaviours and highlight the need for tailored interventions and awareness campaigns to promote healthy sexual communication and relationship dynamics. Understanding these diverse motivations is crucial for clinicians, educators and policymakers aiming to address the multifaceted implications of sexting in contemporary society.

Healthcare professional motivation in Poland and Ukraine: The role of profession, gender, and country

The purpose of this study was to examine the differences in intrinsic vs. extrinsic motivation among medical students, doctors, and nurses in two countries – Ukraine and Poland. As a secondary aim, gender differences were considered as well. During 2019, until the beginning of 2020, before the COVID-19 pandemic started, healthcare professionals from two hospitals and medical students from one university in Poland and healthcare professionals from two hospitals and medical students from one university in Ukraine were recruited to participate in the study. The Wilcoxon test for paired samples was used to compare each participant’s score on the intrinsic vs. extrinsic motivation sub-scales. Differences were examined by country, gender, profession, and combinations of these factors. In Poland, 142 doctors, nurses, and medical students were recruited. In Ukraine, 126 doctors, nurses, and medical students were recruited. Respondents completed an anonymous paper-and-pencil survey that required minimal socio-demographic information (age, gender, profession, and years of experience) so that the respondent would remain unidentifiable. The results show that male doctors were more extrinsically vs. intrinsically motivated (p=0.003), while female doctors and students were more intrinsically vs. extrinsically motivated in both Ukraine and Poland (p=0.023). Male students and nurses from both countries were equally motivated by both intrinsic and extrinsic factors. Polish female doctors were more intrinsically vs. extrinsically motivated than Ukrainian ones (p=0.001), whereas Ukrainian and Polish male doctors were more extrinsically vs. intrinsically motivated (p=0.002). There were statistically different motivational patterns concerning gender, occupation, and nationality, which may have important implications for the construction of motivational systems in both organizational and healthcare systems.

The Examining Tourist Push-pull Motivation on Revisit Intention in Banyuwangi Tourism Destination

The motivation of tourists to travel can be changed by various factors. One of which is the pandemic that occurred 1 year ago. The pandemic is likely affect or even chang the pattern of tourist motivation in determining their tourist destinations. Analysis related to motivation is increasingly important when it is related to tourism as a phenomenon of the world community, where tourist behavior is influenced by various motivations when going on a trip. This research aims to analyze the motivation of push and pull tourists toward the revisit intention in Banyuwangi destination. The respondents of this research were 100 foreign tourists. Data were analyzed using a quantitative approach obtained through surveys with questionnaires as the main research instrument. The analytical tool used to confirm the model of tourist motivation on revisit intention is PLS-PM structural model analysis. The findings of this research show that five push factors of foreign tourist motivation do not affect tourist revisit intention. Those factors are adventure motivation, culture experience motivation, escape motivation, noveltyseeking motivation, and social contact motivation. The pull factors of attractiveness motivation and infrastructure motivation have a significant positive effect on revisit intention. Meanwhile, facilities motivation has no effect on revisiting foreign tourists in Banyuwangi Destination. Different motivation, different achievements: the relationship of motivation and dedication to academic pursuits with final grades among Jewish and Arab undergraduates studying together

Much research has indicated disparities between majority and minority groups in academic achievements. In Israel, differences have been recorded between the ethnic majority of students of Jewish origin and the ethnic minority of students of Arab origin. One possible reason for these findings might be differences in motivation, influenced by the respective cultures of the Jewish ethnic majority and Arab ethnic minority. The present research examined the relationship between differences in academic achievements of 73 students of Jewish origin and 74 students of Arab origin studying together and patterns of motivation and dedication to academic pursuits. The findings indicate considerable differences between the two populations in final grades and in motivational patterns and dedication to academic pursuits. In addition, in each of the research populations, different motivations were associated with a higher level of grades.

The development of mathematics expectancy-value profiles during the secondary–tertiary transition into STEM fields

BackgroundTo master the secondary–tertiary transition into fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), academic self-beliefs play a pivotal role, especially those related to learning mathematics. The framework of expectancy-value theory has been used widely in primary and secondary education and partly in tertiary education to assess the self-beliefs of students in terms of expectancy of success and perceived value of mathematics. Based on this framework, we measured how the intrinsic value, the attainment value, the utility value, and the cost of learning mathematics as well as the expectancy of success when learning mathematics developed during the secondary–tertiary transition of students into STEM fields. Data were collected in a quantitative repeated-measures questionnaire study with two measurement points (measurement point 1: n = 710, measurement point 2: n = 487, listwise: n = 409). We conducted a latent profile analysis to identify the prevalent patterns of mathematics self-beliefs, called profiles, at each of the two measurement points. We studied the relation of these profiles to prior education, achievement at school, and achievement at university. By performing a latent transition analysis, we determined the probabilities of transitioning from the initial profiles to the posterior profiles.ResultsOur analysis revealed four distinct prevalent profiles at each measurement point, ranging from highly favorable (i.e., high expectancy, high value, low cost) to highly unfavorable with respect to learning mathematics. The profiles with favorable manifestations remained stable over time, while those with undesirable manifestations deteriorated further. We observed a sharp increase in cost across all profiles. Prior achievement correlated strongly with profile membership.ConclusionsThe expenditure of time and energy increased sharply during the secondary–tertiary transition, independently of the students’ initial motivational patterns. The perceived utility of mathematics for potential future careers was shown to be a significant source of motivation. The role of mathematics in future careers should thus be made visible in university teaching. Keeping the detrimental development of initially undesirable motivational profiles in mind, university teachers should create ample opportunities for students to gain a sense of accomplishment.

Diversity in the acceptance of sustainable aviation fuels: Uncovering varying motivational patterns

The aviation sector’s significant contribution to greenhouse gas emissions has spurred interest in sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) as a means to mitigate environmental impact. This study examines user diversity in the public acceptance of power-to-liquid aviation fuels (eSAF), exploring varying attitudes towards the environment, flying, and eSAF adoption. Through a quantitative survey of a representative German sample, three distinct segments emerged: the Environment-Centered Approvers, the Flying-Centered Approvers, and the Skeptical. The Environment-Centered Approvers prioritize environmental concerns and perceive moral obligations to use eSAF for climate protection. In contrast, the Flying-Centered Approvers prioritize the continuation of flying with reduced environmental impact, while the Skeptical exhibit a more cautious and uncertain stance towards eSAF adoption. The study highlights the importance of tailoring communication strategies based on the unique motivations and concerns of each subgroup to effectively promote eSAF adoption.

Objectives This study attempted to analyze the change in the latent profile of self-determination motivation as it grew from middle school to high school and to examine the predictive effects of teaching methods, teacher characteristics, and academic stress. Methods For this purpose, Utilizing data from the 2013 Korean Education Longitudinal Study, a longitudinal panel of 7,324 students tracked from 3rd grade middle school in 2017 to 2nd grade high school in 2019 was analyzed. Descriptive statistics and correlation analyses were conducted, followed by latent transition analysis to identify changes in latent groups over time. To assess the impact of class-related variables, multiple logistic regression analysis was employed. Results First, the latent profiles of self-determination motivation in the third grade of middle school were classified into five latent groups: amotivation, heteronomous, low, moderate, and autonomous motivation type. Second, the highest transition pattern is the pattern maintained from the moderate type to the moderate type. Third, interaction classes, teacher relationships, and individualized classes showed positive predictive effects, and teacher achievement pressure showed negative predictive effects. Academic stress showed positive predictive effects in the case of ‘high motivation types’. Conclusions The results of the study provided practical implications for the transfer pattern of adolescents' self-determination motivation and instruction and interaction to improve it.

Mastery Motivation from Early Childhood to Young Adulthood in a Sample of Individuals with Down Syndrome Using Parental Report

ABSTRACT There is evidence that mastery motivation contributes to developmental outcomes, both for typically developing individuals and for those with disabilities such as Down syndrome. Mastery motivation appears to be a stable trait, at least during early childhood, but research with adults has been restricted by the absence of an appropriate measure. The current study investigated the stability and consistency of parent-reported mastery motivation for 21 individuals with Down syndrome across 20 years. Parents completed the Dimensions of Mastery Motivation Questionnaire (DMQ) when their child was aged 4–6 years and 11–15 years. They completed the Dimensions of Adult Mastery Motivation Questionnaire (DAMMQ) when their son or daughter was 23–27 years old. There were strong positive correlations among measures of mastery motivation across the three time points. Persistence decreased significantly from early childhood to adolescence but increased from adolescence to adulthood. Most individual profiles fitted this pattern, with only one of the 21 participants showing continual declines in persistence. For individuals with Down syndrome, patterns of mastery motivation may be developed early in life and sustained into adulthood.

Understanding the adoption intention for electric vehicles: The role of hedonic-utilitarian values

Generally, electric vehicles (EVs) are viewed as an innovation contributing to address environmental concern and energy exhaustion caused by excessive motorized driving. Based on a “perception-belief-intention” paradigm, this study endeavors to investigate people's intention to adopt EVs, where multiple factors including perceived risk and perceived benefit (i.e., perceptions), attitude, subjective norm, and perceived behavioral control are jointly considered. More importantly, predictive importance of psychological determinants for EVs adoption intention is assumed to vary depending on people's evaluations about the hedonic-utilitarian value, i.e., the extent to which they are motivated by the hedonic and utilitarian values of EVs. A four-step analytical framework is performed to achieve the objective, suggesting that (1) overall, the basic paradigm is confirmed, where attitude is the fundamental antecedent of adoption intention among TPB factors, and perceived functional risk negatively influences EVs adoption intention, while the roles of perceived financial risk and perceived benefit are complicated; (2) four groups with diverse hedonic-utilitarian motivational pattern are obtained based the self-organizing map, each exhibiting distinctive considerations regarding intention to adopt EVs. The findings offer some valuable implications for policymakers and industries about how EVs adoption could be encouraged in the backdrop of an emerging sustainable transportation market.

A Dining Career Ladder: Customers’ Motivation of Visiting Internet-Famous Restaurants

ABSTRACT Customers visiting internet-famous restaurants enjoy unique dining experiences. However, few studies have explored customers’ motivation for visiting internet-famous restaurants. Integrating different motivational theories, this study proposes a dining career ladder to conceptualize customers’ initial motivations to visit internet-famous restaurants, and their (un)varying motivations when they gain increasing experience. With reflections from 27 participants, we found that dining career ladder consists of four levels, from the primary level of physiological needs (dine out and relaxation, gourmet food), to stimulation and novelty (curiosity and novelty seeking, effect of unique atmospherics, and restaurant online reputation), belongingness and socialization (social occasions and bandwagon effect), and self-esteem and recognition (fear of missing out). Customers have multidimensional motivations for going to restaurants initially, but they show a descending pattern of motivations moving from higher level of needs to lower levels by concentrating on physiological needs when they accumulate negative experiences. Dining companions play a role in customers’ motivations to visit internet-famous restaurants.

Evaluating Two Brief Motivational Interventions for Excessive-Drinking University Students.

Two brief computerized motivational interventions for excessive-drinking university students were evaluated. Participants (N = 88, females = 61.5%, mean age = 21.05 years) were randomly assigned to a control group or one of two experimental groups: Computerized Brief Intervention (CBI) or Computerized Brief Intervention-Enhanced (CBI-E). CBI followed the principles of Motivational Interviewing to motivate participants to change their drinking behavior. CBI-E additionally used the principles of Systematic Motivational Counseling to identify and discuss with participants their dysfunctional motivational patterns that were interfering with their attainment of emotional satisfaction. At baseline and a three-month follow-up, the participants completed a battery of measures of alcohol consumption and related problems. At baseline, the participants were confirmed to be heavy drinkers with many drink-related negative consequences. Males and females responded differently to the interventions. During follow-up, males' alcohol use was ordered: CBI-E < CBI < Controls. The females in all three groups reduced their alcohol use, but there were no significant group differences. Males responded to the interventions as expected. For females, the assessment itself seemed to serve as an effective intervention, and there were no post-intervention differences among the three groups. Suggestions for future research using CBI and CBI-E are discussed.

The study underscores the continuous evolution of employee motivation and performance research, driven by scholars worldwide.
