Integrated partial nitrification and Tribonema minus cultivation for cost-effective ammonia recovery and lipid production from slaughterhouse wastewater

High ammonium content in untreated anaerobic digestion (AD) wastewater can inhibit microalgal growth, hindering both bioremediation and biomass/lipid productivity. This study investigated the potential of partial nitrification (PN) as a pretreatment step for AD effluent before cultivating the oleaginous microalga Tribonema minus for bioremediation and lipid production. The PN process transforms inhibitory ammonium into nitrate, a nitrogen form that microalgae can effectively utilize, thereby reducing ammonia toxicity. The results showed remarkable resilience in T. minus, with the species being able to tolerate high ammonium levels (≤120 mg/L) when combined with nitrate in synthetic wastewater. However, when ammonium was the sole nitrogen source (>30 mg/L), its inhibitory effect on T. minus growth became evident. Nevertheless, successful cultivation of T. minus was achieved in PN effluent from slaughterhouse AD using a Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR) (25 °C and hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 1.5 h) containing 190 mg/L ammonium, achieving 51.25 % lipid accumulation. Additionally, cultivation with 125 mg/L NH4+-N in the PN effluent resulted in removal rates exceeding 95 % for NH4+-N. This approach, therefore, delivered the dual advantage of not only mitigating the environmental risks associated with wastewater but also fostering renewable biomass production for cleaner energy.

Stable partial nitrification was achieved for nitrogen removal from municipal wastewater by gel immobilization: A pilot-scale study

As an energy and carbon saving process for nitrogen removal from wastewater, the partial nitrification and denitrification process (PN/D) has been extensively researched. However, achieving stable PN in municipal wastewater has always been challenging. In this study, a gel immobilized PN/D nitrogen removal process (GI-PN/D) was established. A 94d pilot-scale experiment was conducted using real municipal wastewater with an ammonia concentration of 43.5 ± 5.3 mg N/L at a temperature range of 11.3–28.7℃. The nitrogen removal performance and associated pathways, shifts in the microbial community as well as sludge yield were investigated. The results were as follows: the effluent TN and COD were 0.6 ± 0.4 mg/L and 31.1 ± 3.8 mg/L respectively, and the NAR exceeding 95 %. GI-PN/D achieved deep nitrogen removal of municipal wastewater through stable PN without taking any other measures. The primary pathways for nitrogen removal were identified as denitrification, simultaneous nitrification-denitrification, and aerobic denitrification. High-throughput sequencing analysis revealed that the immobilized fillers facilitated the autonomous enrichment of functional bacteria in each reactor, effectively promoting the dominance and stability of the microbial communities. In addition, GI-PN/D had the characteristic of low sludge yield, with an average sludge yield of 0.029 kg SS/kg COD. This study provides an effective technical for nitrogen removal from municipal wastewater through PN.

Kinetics of ammonium removal from domestic wastewater by partial nitrification and anammox process

The research was conducted for 210 days on a partial nitrification/Anammox system (PN/A) using fixed bed biomass carrier to remove nitrogen in domestic wastewater. Total nitrogen and ammonium removal efficiency reached 69.8 % and 91.4 %, respectivety. In this study, we investigated three kinetic models (the first-order, Grau second-order and Stover Kincannon model) to determine which model is most suitable to describe the kinetics of the partial nitrification and anammox process. The results have shown that the Stover-Kincannon model is the most suitable and applicable for prediction the substrate concentration in the wastewater and the optimal volume of the reactor. The values of saturation constant (KB) and the max ultilizaion rate (Umax) were calculated for partial nitrification process as 15.489 and 8.038 (mg L−1 d−1). respectively. The research has also determined the values of KB and Umax for anammox process as 1.738 and 1.241 (mg L−1 d−1), respectively.

Increasing carbon to nitrogen ratio promoted anaerobic ammonia-oxidizing bacterial enrichment and advanced nitrogen removal in mainstream anammox system

The effects of fluctuating organic carbon to nitrogen (C/N) ratios on mainstream simultaneous partial nitrification, anammox, and denitrification (SNAD) process were studied over 376-day period. The nitrogen removal efficiency decreased from 85.0 ± 6.6 % to 75.8 ± 2.8 % as C/N ratio decreased (3.4 → 1.7), but increased to 82.0 ± 1.9 % when C/N ratio raised to 2.9 and to 78.4 ± 3.0 % when C/N ratio decreased again (2.9 → 2.1), indicating that high C/N ratios promoted nitrogen removal. As C/N ratio raised (1.7 → 2.9), anaerobic ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AnAOB) abundance increased from 1.3 × 109 to 2.0 × 109 copies/L, which explained the improved nitrogen removal. With an elevated C/N ratio, partial nitrification and endogenous partial denitrification reactions were enhanced, providing more nitrite for AnAOB. Additionally, the aerobic_chemoheterotrophy function and particle sizes increased, forming more stable anoxic microenvironment for AnAOB. Overall, increasing C/N ratio promoted the stability of mainstream SNAD.

Mechanisms of signaling molecules regulating microbial community succession and metabolic pathways in partial nitrification of a composite zeolite-biofilm under low salinity

The low salinity caused by the substitution of seawater and the overuse of deicing salt hinders the treatment of mainstream wastewater by conventional biological nitrogen removal process. In this experiment, the start-up and stable operation of partial nitrification were achieved based on a composite zeolite biofilm (CZB) and 94.1 % of nitrite accumulation efficiency was obtained at low salinity. CZB could still maintain high biofilm proportion, strong adhesion and robust structure to resist the impact of 0.6 % salinity. The enhanced release of C8-HSL from the aqueous phase of the CZB increased the oxygen transfer resistance of the sludge layer, thus reducing the oxygen mass transfer efficiency of the sludge layer and inhibiting NOB more effectively. The augmented release of C6-HSL and C12-HSL in the sludge phase (SP) leads to elevated production of protein and polysaccharides, culminating in the development of a more resilient microbial structure. Meanwhile, C6-HSL and C8-HSL in the SP of CZB promoted gene expression, especially nitrate reductase (Nar), to stabilize the supply of NO2–-N. Meanwhile, CZB reinforced the microbial impact resistance by enhancing the tricarboxylic acid cycle, and awakened important gene (nrfA, associated with dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium). This activation played a vital role in maintaining the appropriate NH4+-N to NO2–-N ratio in the effluent. Finally, CZB eliminated Nitrospira from the system and increased the relative abundance of Nitrosomonas to 12.8 % at 0.6 % salinity. This method offered valuable theoretical insights for design and optimization of the partial nitrification process for treating mainstream low-salinaty wastewater.

Advance nitrogen removal from anaerobic sludge digestion liquor using partial nitrification and denitrification coupled with simultaneous partial nitrification, anammox, and denitrification process

A novel two-stage continuous-flow partial nitrification and denitrification coupled with simultaneous partial nitrification, anammox, and denitrification (PND-SNAD) process was developed to treat anaerobic sludge digestion liquor. During the stable phase, the total nitrogen and chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiencies were 93 ± 3 % and 59 ± 7 %, respectively. Free ammonia suppression (26.2 ± 12.7 mg/L) and low dissolved oxygen (DO, 0.12 ± 0.07 mg/L) were key factors in the operation of the PND process, while the SNAD process was restricted successfully by limited oxygen (DO < 0.1 mg/L) and short solids retention time (9.7 d). The PND process was an important pretreatment process that could remove biodegradable dissolved COD by denitrification and supply ammonium-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) to the SNAD process. Nitrosomonas and Ca. Brocadia were the dominant AOB and anammox bacteria, respectively. Overall, this research presents a distinctive SNAD combined process for anaerobic sludge digestion liquor treatment.

A pilot-scale SNAD-MBBR process for treating anaerobic digester liquor of swine wastewater: performance and microbial community.

In this pilot-scale study, simultaneous partial nitrification, anammox, and denitrification (SNAD) process was achieved successfully in a moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) for treating anaerobic digester liquor of swine wastewater. After 95days of operation, when the total nitrogen loading rate of SNAD-MBBR process was 1.09kg TN/m3/day, the total nitrogen removal rate could reach 0.87kg TN/m3/day, and the removal efficiencies of ammonium and total nitrogen were 92.0% and 79.7%, respectively. The optimum pH and temperature for SNAD-MBBR process were 8.5 and 35°C, respectively, and the optimum dissolved oxygen for SNAD1 and SNAD2 were 0.30 and 0.07mg/L, respectively. The 16S rRNA sequencing suggested that Candidatus Kuenenia, Candidatus Brocadia, Nitrosomonas, and Denitratisoma were the dominant nitrogen removal bacteria. Some of the co-existing bacteria (Truepera, Limnobacter, and Anaerolineaceae uncultured) promoted ammonium oxidation and guaranteed the growth of the anammox bacteria under adverse environmental conditions. Overall, this study demonstrated that the SNAD-MBBR process would be an energy-saving and cost-effective method for the removal of nitrogen from swine wastewater and provided important process parameters for stable operation of the full-scale SNAD process.

Effect of ultrasound on the stability of partial nitrification: Under the interference of aeration rate

The fluctuation of dissolved oxygen is one of the primary cause of disruptions to the consistent operation of partial nitrification, and the level of dissolved oxygen is mainly controlled by the aeration rate. This study investigated the influence of ultrasonic treatment on the stability of partial nitrification of activated sludge under different aeration conditions. After being treated with ultrasound (energy density = 0.20 W·mL−1, treatment time = 10 min), partial nitrification process operated stably for 67 days, with the nitrite accumulation rate above 83.89 %. The effluent contained 42.50 mg·L−1 of nitrite, much higher than the control reactor (0.30 mg·L−1). The gap between the specific ammonia and nitrite oxidation rates widened continuously as the aeration rate increased, and nitrite-oxidizing bacteria activity did not recover even under conditions with a very high oxygen content. Further analysis showed that ultrasonic treatment had obvious stripping effect on excess extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), especially loosely bound EPS and protein. Additionally, long-term ultrasonic treatment promoted the enrichment of Nitrosomonas and strongly inhibited Nitrotoga. Based on these findings, it appears that under conditions of high aeration rate, ultrasound effectively suppress the recovery of Nitrotoga activity and improve the stability of partial nitrification.

The Effect of Salinity on N2O Emissions during Domestic Wastewater Partial Nitrification Treatment in a Sequencing Batch Reactor

Previous studies have highlighted the salinization caused by the use of seawater to flush toilets and industrial wastewater entering the urban wastewater systems in coastal areas. Thus, in this study, the effect of salinity on N2O emissions during the partial nitrification process, as well as the emission mechanism, was investigated using a partial nitrification system of wastewater as the research object. The results showed that (1) the increase in salinity decreased the oxidation rate of NH4+ and the formation rate of NO2− during partial nitrification; (2) the increase in salinity increased the N2O emissions during NH4+ oxidation and NH2OH oxidation and decreased the formation rate of NO2−-N during hydroxylamine oxidation; (3) the total N2O emissions during hydroxylamine oxidation were less than those during ammonia nitrogen oxidation, and a greater amount of NO2− was reduced to N2 instead of N2O during hydroxylamine oxidation; and (4) a novel finding was that, during partial nitrification with the available organic matter, the N2O emissions via heterotrophic denitrification by heterotrophic bacteria should not be ignored, and the increase in salinity can increase the N2O emissions generated via heterotrophic denitrification. These results would provide a theoretical basis for reducing the N2O emissions in the wastewater treatment process.

The response rule of wetland microorganisms by coupling of partial nitrification process and constructed wetland

In this study, the response rule of wetland microorganisms by coupling of partial nitrification (PN) process and vertical flow constructed wetland (VFCW) were determined. Coupling of PN effluent and exhaust gas positively affected microbial abundance and community. Results revealed that the microbial community structure in the VFCW was changed. The nitrification and denitrification intensities were promoted and the abundance of functional bacteria related to nitrogen and organic matter removal were increased. In addition, the removal efficiencies of pollutants of VFCW have been significantly improved. The results showed that the System II coupling the PN effluent and intermittent aeration with exhaust gas achieved better removal of NH4+-N (92.61 ± 2.25 %) and TN (70.33 ± 3.61 %) than the System I that only fed PN effluent without exhaust aeration. NO2−-N pollution in PN effluent was eliminated with a removal efficiency of 97.58 ± 1.08 %.

Effect and microbial mechanism of pharmaceutical and personal care product exposure on partial nitrification process and nitrous oxide emission

This study focused on the short- and long-term exposure of pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) to the partial nitrification process and nitrous oxide emission. The corresponding microbial mechanisms were also explored. The results revealed a concentration-dose effect on the partial nitrification process. Moreover, the PPCP concentration of ≥2 μg/L featured inhibitory effects on the process. The solo effect of PPCP on the partial nitrification process was analyzed through microcosmic experiments, and the results revealed significant variations in PN. A dose-effect relationship existed between the PPCP concentration and N2O emission intensity. After exposure to PPCPs, the N2O emission released during the partial nitrification process was significantly reduced. Different PPCPs featured various effects in mitigating N2O emissions. Low PPCP concentrations led to a reduction in the richness and diversity of microbes, but their community structure remained significantly unchanged. High PPCP concentrations (≥5 μg/L) resulted in increased species richness and diversity, but their microbial community composition was significantly affected. The function prediction and nitrogen metabolic pathway analysis indicated that PPCP exposure led to the inhibition of the ammonia oxidation process. However, all genes encoding denitrification enzymes were upregulated. The microorganisms in the microbial community featured modular structural properties and wide synergistic relationships between genera. This study provides valuable insights into the effect of PPCP exposure on the particle nitrification process and corresponding changes in the microbial community.

Insights on biological phosphorus removal with partial nitrification in single sludge system via sidestream free ammonia and free nitrous acid dosing

The sidestream sludge treatment by free ammonium (FA)/free nitrous acid (FNA) dosing was frequently demonstrated to maintain the nitrite pathway for the partial nitrification (PN) process. Nevertheless, the inhibitory effect of FA and FNA would severely influence polyphosphate accumulating organisms (PAOs), destroying the microbe-based phosphorus (P) removal. Therefore, a strategic evaluation was proposed to successfully achieve biological P removal with a partial nitrification process in a single sludge system by sidestream FA and FNA dosing. Through the long-term operation of 500 days, excellent phosphorus, ammonium and total nitrogen removal performance were achieved at 97.5 ± 2.6 %, 99.1 ± 1.0 % and 75.5 ± 0.4 %, respectively. Stable partial nitrification with a nitrite accumulation ratio (NAR) of 94.1 ± 3.4 was attained. The batch tests also reported the robust aerobic phosphorus uptake based on FA and FNA adapted sludge after exposure of FA and FNA, respectively, suggesting the FA and FNA treatment strategy could potentially offer the opportunity for the selection of PAOs, which synchronously have the tolerance to FA and FNA. Microbial community analysis suggested that Accumulibacter, Tetrasphaera, and Comamonadaceae collectively contributed to the phosphorus removal in this system. Summarily, the proposed work presents a novel and feasible strategy to integrate enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) and short-cut nitrogen cycling and bring the combined mainstream phosphorus removal and partial nitrification process closer to practical application.

Highly efficient and robust treatment of low C/N actual domestic sewage via integrated fermentation, partial-nitrification, partial-denitrification and anammox (IFPNDA)

For achieving efficient and robust treatment of domestic sewage with C/N around 2.8, this study innovatively developed an integrated fermentation, partial-nitrification, partial-denitrification and anammox (IFPNDA) process based on the Anaerobic Baffled Reactor and Continuous-flow Stirred Tank Reactor (ABR-CSTR) bioreactor. Desirable N-removal efficiency of 87.5 ± 2.1% was obtained without external organics, correspondingly effluent total nitrogen (TN) concentration reached 6.1 ± 0.7 mg/L. The N-removal stability was greatly facilitated by the effective linkage between partial nitrification (PN) process and partial denitrification (PD) process in emergency. Highly enriched hydrolytic bacteria (6.9%) and acidogenic bacteria (5.7%) in A1, especially Comamonas (2.8%) and Longilinea (3.5%), induced the significant increase of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) in domestic sewage. Thauera (6.1%) in A2 and Nitrosomonas (5.4%) in A3 acted as the dominant flora of nitrite supplies for anammox in IFPNDA process. Candidatus_Brocadia (2.4%) dominated the advanced nitrogen removal. The IFPNDA process exhibited much potential for achieving energy neutrality during wastewater treatment.

Integrated thiosulfate-driven denitrification, partial nitrification and anammox process in membrane-aerated biofilm reactor for low-carbon, energy-efficient biological nitrogen removal

Combining multiple bioprocesses in a single membrane-aerated biofilm reactor (MABR) unit for wastewater treatment is an emerging research focus. This study investigated the feasibility of coupling thiosulfate-driven denitrification (TDD) with partial nitrification and anammox (PNA) in a MABR for the treatment of ammonium-containing wastewater. The integrated bioprocess was tested over a continuous operation period (>130 d) in two MABRs: one with a polyvinylidene fluoride membrane (MABR-1), and the other with micro-porous aeration tubes covered with non-wovenpolyester fabrics (MABR-2). After start-up, the MABR-1 and MABR-2 based on the TDD–PNA process achieved satisfactory total nitrogen removal efficiencies of 63% and 76%, with maximum oxygen utilisation efficiencies of up to 66% and 80% and nitrogen removal fluxes of 1.3 and 4.7 gN/(m2·d), respectively. Predictions from the AQUASIM-model verified the integrated bioprocess. These lab scale findings confirmed the applicability of MABR technology for simultaneous sulfur and nitrogen removal, promising for pilot-scale application.

Start-up and maintenance of indigenous microalgae-bacteria consortium treating toilet wastewater through partial nitrification and nitrite-type denitrification

Microalgae-bacteria consortium (MBC) provides an alternative to sustainable treatment of human toilet wastewater (TWW) and resource recovery. This study compared the conventional activated sludge system and wastewater indigenous MBC system (IMBC) for nitrogen removal in TWW through the coupled partial nitrification (PN) and nitrite-type denitrification process. PN was firstly established by alternating FA and FNA. Subsequently, the successful PN maintenance with the nitrite accumulation rate ranging between 90.1–95.3% was achieved using two strategies: light irradiation with the appropriate specific light energy density at 0.0188–0.0598 kJ/mg VSS and the timely nitrite-type denitrification with the algae-secreted organics as the carbon source, eventually resulting in the nitrite accumulation rate ranging between 90.1–95.3%. In the IMBC-PN system, bacterial metabolism contributed to 91.5% of nitrogen removal and the rest was through microalgal assimilation. This study offers a sustainable hybrid IMBC-PN process for high NH4+-N strength wastewater treatment (e.g., TWW), which theoretically saves 23.5% aeration and 34.2% carbon source as well as reduces 17.0% sludge production.

End-to-end autonomous and resilient operability strategy of full-scale PN-SBR system: From influent augmentation to AI-aided optimal control and scheduling

This study developed an artificial intelligence (AI)-driven autonomous resilient operation of partial nitrification (PN) process to enhance the performance of a two-stage PN-anammox process by ensuring a specific NO2/NH4 ratio under varying influent conditions before the wastewater enters the subsequent anammox process. First, a mathematical model representing PN process was developed in a full-scale sequencing batch reactor (PN-SBR). That model was then calibrated using AI-driven multi-objective optimization targeting NH4, NO2, and NO3 using a comprehensive rank-based global sensitivity analysis framework to identify the biological kinetic and stoichiometric parameters that has high affection on the PN process. After validating the PN-SBR model with real-time measurements of the PN process, an AI-driven optimal aeration strategy (AI-OpAS) was developed for the targeted PN-SBR. The influent characteristics were augmented using the oversampling method and then clustered using varying influent conditions. The AI-OpAS used iterative approximate dynamic programming (iADP) to determine the optimal aeration length scheduling and optimal dissolved‑oxygen control policy to maintain autonomously the NO2/NH4 ratio while reducing aeration energy under diverse influent conditions. The results show that the proposed AI-OpAS can operate the PN-SBR process by achieving the proposed NO2/NH4 ratio of 1.1 and reducing overall aeration energy consumption by up to 31.38 % under varying influent conditions; furthermore, this AI-aided strategy of resilient operation can be extended to the other variables such as pH for autonomous and sustainable PN-SBR system simultaneously.

Achievement and microbial profiles of non-aerated partial nitrification in photo sequencing batch and continuous flow reactors

Nitrite accumulation could be achieved in algal-bacterial consortia without energy-intensive aeration, which could be a sustainable alternative for wastewater treatment. However, few studies focused on the achievement of partial nitrification in different non-aerated algal-bacterial systems and the related microbial mechanisms are still unclear. Here two different algal-bacterial systems (photo-sequencing batch reactor (PSBR) and up-flow sludge blanket bioreactor (PUSB)) were operated for anaerobic effluent treatment and the non-aerated partial nitrification was evaluated. Results showed that the nitrite accumulation rates in the PSBR and PUSB were 92.70 ± 7.81 % and 81.44 ± 11.28 %, respectively, which was constant with microbial activities. Denser algal-bacterial granules were observed in the PSBR, whereas looser algal-bacterial flocs were in the PUSB. Phormidium and Leptolyngbya (i.e., two filamentous cyanobacteria) were enriched in the PSBR and PUSB, respectively, and the higher enrichment of Nitrosomonas and complete inhibition of Nitrospira contributed to better partial nitrification of PSBR. The PUSB had more intensive interspecific interactions and more cooperative behavior in microbial network. Metagenomic analysis revealed that partial denitrification might partially contribute to the nitrite accumulation in the PUSB owing to higher nitrate reductase gene expressions. Overall, this study advances our understandings of the partial nitrification process and nitrite accumulation by algal-bacterial consortia.

Achieving deep autotrophic nitrogen removal from low strength ammonia nitrogen wastewater in aeration sponge iron biofilter: Simultaneous nitrification, Feammox, NDFO and Anammox

Partial nitrification and anammox process is considered to be a good choice for nitrogen removal. Nevertheless, it is difficult to achieve in low ammonia wastewater because of the need to control further oxidation of nitrite. Nitrification combined with Feammox (anaerobic ammonia oxidation coupled to Fe (III) reduction) and NDFO (nitrate/nitrite-dependent Fe (II) oxidation) can achieve autotrophic removal of low ammonia. And sponge iron can avoid the disadvantage of continuously adding iron sources in this process. Therefore, a sponge iron biofilter (SIBF) treating low ammonia wastewater under aeration was explored in this study. The optimal operating conditions for SIBF were hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 9 h and gas–water ratio (R) of 9:1, at which the total inorganic nitrogen removal efficiency was up to 77.2 %, and effluent ammonia and total inorganic nitrogen concentrations were less than 5 mg/L and 15 mg/L, respectively. This met the 1A discharge standard of municipal wastewater in China. Stable ratio isotope results indicated that Feammox, NDFO and Anammox resulted in high nitrogen loss in SIBF. And different nitrogen transformation contribution tests indicated NDFO had the dominant contribution, which accounted for 55.7 %. Besides, the production of N2O was minimum under HRT of 9 h and R of 9:1, in which the N2O emission factor was 0.7 %. Stable isotope tracing analysis showed that 92.8 % of N2O was derived from ammonia and the dominant production pathway was nitrifier denitrification. The results of microbial community showed that the nitrification bacteria-Nitrosomonas, Nitrotoga, Nitrospira, Feammox bacteria-Dechloromonas, NDFO bacteria-Thiobacillus and anammox bacteria-Brocadia played major roles in SIBF. Therefore, SIBF shows superior performance and application potential in autotrophic nitrogen removal from low-ammonia nitrogen wastewater under aeration.

Development of Fouling-Control Strategy for Ceramic Membrane Bioreactor Applied in Partial Nitrification Process

A lab-scale ceramic membrane bioreactor (MBR) with active membrane-fouling control system was developed for the partial nitrification (PN) process. The in situ membrane cleaning method was applied to remove the contaminants on the surface of the membrane with no interruption of the wastewater treatment. The results showed that the device increased critical flux and reduced gel layer resistance (Rg) and internal resistance (Ri) of the flat-sheet ceramic membrane by inhibiting the formation of the cake layer. In long-term experiments, nitrite oxidizing bacteria (NOB) was successfully suppressed, and nitrite accumulation rate (NAR) was achieved at a high level, up to 90.09%; the effluent NO2−-N/NH4+-N was maintained in balance dynamically with an average ratio of ~1.30, which would be beneficial to the proliferation of Anammox bacteria and the following autotrophic nitrogen removal (ANR) process. Evaluation of the Combined C/N ratio, DO Set Point, and HRT Influence on Nitrogen Removal Rate in One-Stage Reactor Through Partial Nitrification Anammox Process During Treatment of Synthetic Digestate of Poultry Litter Wastewater

Highlights A one-stage reactor PN/A process was developed and evaluated. The highest TN removal rate was 87.3% for the PN/A process to treat synthetic wastewater containing poultry litter at room temperature. Bacterial composition of mature sludge community of wastewater was investigated in this study. Adjusted parameters controlled the growth of AOB and NOB. Abstract. Anammox is an increasingly common process used for the treatment of municipally rejected water and even mainstream wastewater due to its low oxygen demand. However, anammox is not commonly utilized in the treatment of poultry litter because of its high organic content, which would inhibit the anammox process. One-stage partial nitrification and anammox (PN/A) process was developed and evaluated for removing total nitrogen (TN) content from synthetic digestate of poultry litter using a sequencing batch biofilm reactor (SBBR). Independent variables including carbon to nitrogen ratio (C/N) at 1, 2, and 3, dissolved oxygen level (DO, mg/L) at 0.2, 0.35, and 0.5, and hydraulic retention time (HRT, h) at 24, 48, and 72 were examined using Central Composite Design (CCD) coupled with Response Surface Methodology (RSM) to optimize the TN removal rate. Results showed that the one-stage PN/A process achieved an optimal TN removal rate of 87.3% and an optimal NH4+-N removal rate of 100% when C/N, DO, and HRT were 1, 0.5 mg/L, and 72 h, respectively. The quadratic regression model developed (p = 0.0018) perfectly fitted the nitrogen removal efficiency of the SBBR. The uncertainty analysis showed an error range of 0.12% to 0.96% for the model's accuracy within the DO, C/N ratio, and HRT ranges tested. The bacterial consortium analysis suggested that the control of the growth of ammonium oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB) was achieved.
