Cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) is one of the mostimportant cucurbitaceous vegetable crops grownextensively in tropical and subtropical parts of thecountry. Cucumber is thermophilic and required optimumtemperature range between 18 0C and 24 °C. It is grownfor its tender fruits, which are consumed either raw assalad, cooked as vegetable or as pickling cucumber inits immature stage. It is a rich source of carbohydrates,Ca, P and vitamin C. The appreciable yield deficit betweenpotential and realized crop yield indicated an urgent needto develop superior hybrids having desirable yield andquality attributes. Diverse parents are expected toproduce high yielding hybrids through manifestation ofheterosis, increase the probability to obtain transgressivesegregants in F2 and in subsequent generations.
