The science-specific home learning environment of elementary school children – how are science experiences and science talk associated with the children’s science achievement?

ABSTRACT Background The home learning environment (HLE) is central to children’s development. Activities in the HLE are assumed to mediate the effects of distal factors such as family socio-economic status (SES) and parental beliefs and attitudes on children’s development. However, little is known about the science-specific HLE and the relationship between different parent-child science activities and elementary school children’s science learning. Purpose This study aims to investigate a) how different science activities in the HLE relate to children’s science achievement and b) how they mediate the associations of family SES and parents’ beliefs and attitudes on children’s science achievement. Sample Data from the German subsample of the Trends in Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) 2019 was analyzed, including 3,437 4th-grade children (Mage = 10.39 years, 50% boys). Design and methods The study has a cross-sectional design. We used structure equation modeling (SEM) to examine associations and test for indirect effects. Results We identified two different patterns of science activities in the HLE: science experiences (e.g. reading science books, experimenting) and science talk. SEM revealed that science talk was associated with children’s science achievement, whereas science experiences were not. Further, science talk mediated associations of family SES and parental beliefs and attitudes on the children’s science achievement. Conclusions Our results might indicate that discursive elements in science activities, such as parent-child science talk, are crucial for children’s science learning, whereas a mere provision of science experiences may not adequately foster the children. We suggest that future research should focus on analyzing the quality of parent-child interactions in different science activities to understand possible learning processes in these activities better. Overall, although effect sizes were small, our results emphasize the crucial role of the HLE for elementary school children’s science learning.

ADHD Symptoms in Middle Childhood: The Role of Child Attachment and Maternal Emotional Availability in an Inpatient Clinical Sample.

Child ADHD symptoms are highly prevalent in middle childhood, alongside impairment in social functioning. The parent-child relationship has been shown to play an important role; however, studies investigating specific facets of the parent-child relationship in ADHD symptomatology in middle childhood have been neglected. We assumed that higher ADHD symptoms were associated with both (1) lower maternal emotional availability (EA) and (2) lower child attachment security. Moreover, (3) we aimed to explore which specific EA dimensions were associated with ADHD symptoms. In a socio-pediatric clinic in Germany, 71 inpatient mother-child dyads (child age: M = 7.70, SD = 1.06; n = 54 boys) were assessed. Clinical data about child ADHD symptoms (Child Behavior Checklist 6-18 subscale "attention deficit/hyperactivity problems"), maternal EA (free play), and child attachment representation (Attachment Story Completion Task, GEV-B) were analyzed cross-sectionally. Controlling for child oppositional behavior and sex, child ADHD symptoms were associated with overall maternal EA, and more specifically non-hostility, but not with child attachment representation. Our results imply that the role of parent-child interaction quality should be considered in the treatment of ADHD. Bidirectional effects cannot be ruled out.

Mind-mindedness in mothers of infants with excessive crying/sleeping/eating disorders

IntroductionExcessive crying, sleeping, and eating disorders are among the most prevalent mental health diagnoses in the first 3 years of life and involve significant health service use. Parents of infants with excessive crying/sleeping/eating disorders report high levels of stress, since they feel incapable of soothing and/or nurturing their baby. Infants' distress can lead to a breakdown in parents' mentalizing abilities and, more specifically, parental mind-mindedness in the parent-child interaction. Moreover, the signals of infants with excessive crying/sleeping/eating disorders tend to be equivocal and difficult to read. This also might contribute to lower parent-child interaction quality. Until now, parental mind-mindedness, which is regarded as a prerequisite for sensitivity, has not been investigated in mothers of infants with excessive crying/sleeping/eating disorders. We investigated whether mind-mindedness in mothers of infants with excessive crying, sleeping and/or eating disorders differed from a healthy control group. We supposed that mothers of infants with excessive crying/sleeping/eating disorders would use (1) less appropriate mind-related comments (AMRCs), and (2) more non-attuned mind-related comments (NAMRCs) than mothers in the control group.MethodsOur sample consisted of 44 mothers and their infants who were patients in a socio-paediatric clinic in Germany. The children were diagnosed with excessive crying, sleeping and/or eating disorders according to DC:0-5 (= clinical group). The control group was composed of 64 healthy children and their mothers. Maternal mind-mindedness was coded during a free-play interaction.ResultsResults showed that mothers of infants with excessive crying, sleeping and/or eating disorders used both more AMRCs (p = .029) as well as more NAMRCs (p = .006) than mothers in the control group.DiscussionThe findings are discussed in terms of implications for interventions (e.g., enhancing mind-mindedness trough video-feedback).

Environmental mediating mechanisms in the associations between parental depressive symptoms and preschoolers internalizing problems: results from a cross-sectional study

ABSTRACT Children with a parent who suffers from depression are more likely to develop internalizing problems themselves. Moreover, poverty is an additional risk factor for child internalizing problems. According to models of intergenerational transmission of depression, various environmental mechanisms may account for this transmission. However, very few studies have included multiple mediators, as well as both parents in low-income samples. In this study of low-income families, we measured parental depressive symptoms, child internalizing problems, and examined three potential mediators: parent-child interaction quality, spouse’s depressive symptoms, and coparenting conflict. Results indicated that the transmission of paternal depressive symptoms to child internalizing problems was entirely accounted for by these three mediators. The transmission of maternal depressive symptoms to child internalizing problems was mediated partially by coparenting conflict, but this link remained largely direct. These results underscore the need to consider both parents and coparenting conflict in clinical interventions targeting internalizing problems among preschoolers.

Assessing parent-child interaction with deaf and hard of hearing infants aged 0-3 years: An international multi-professional e-Delphi.

Most deaf babies are born to hearing families who do not yet have the skills to communicate effectively with their child. Adaptations to communication are important because the quality of parent-child interaction (PCI) predicts how a deaf child develops language. Teachers of Deaf children and Speech and Language Therapists support families with communication in the home. Currently, there are no assessments that appraise how a parent interacts with their deaf baby. Previous research has identified which parent behaviours and approaches are used in PCI assessments in research and practice. The current paper forms consensus on the core content and best practices of a new PCI tool for deaf children aged 0-3 years. An international sample of expert academics and practitioners (n = 83) were recruited to take part in a two-round modified electronic Delphi study. Participants were presented with 69 statements focusing on (i) which parent behaviours were important in assessment (ii) the methods to be used in PCI assessment. Participants rated the extent to which they agreed or disagreed with each statement on a five-point Likert scale and gave comments to support their response. Consensus was defined as >80% of participants rating the statement as a (4) 'highly important' or a (5) 'essential'. If consensus was not reached, participant comments were used to generate new statements which were rated in the second round. This project involved a patient and public involvement (PPI) group of hearing and deaf parents and professionals to design and guide the study. Consensus was achieved on 52 statements and ranged from 80-99%. A further six statements were additionally included. Within the 58 statements included, 36 were parent behaviours which centred on the parent's observation of, and response to, their child's behaviour and/or language. The remaining 22 statements focused on methods used in the assessment such as parents having their PCI filmed, parents having the opportunity to review the video and assess themselves alongside a professional, and parents being involved in subsequent goal setting. This e-Delphi presented the parent behaviours and methods of assessment to be included in a new PCI tool for deaf children. Future co-production work and acceptability and feasibility testing are discussed.

Parental Reflective Functioning on the Parent Development Interview: A narrative review of measurement, association, and future directions.

A caregiver's capacity to mentalize is thought to be one of the most important features of secure parent-child relationships. Parental mentalizing can be measured using the Reflective Functioning (RF) coding system applied to the Parent Development Interview (PDI). In this narrative review, we summarize the research using this measure and synthesize what has been learnt about the predictors, correlates and sequelae of parental RF. Studies have consistently shown that PRF on the PDI is associated with both parent and child attachment and is an important factor in the intergenerational transmission of attachment. It is also related to the quality of parental representations, parent-child interactions, and child outcomes. While a number of social and clinical risk factors are associated with lower PRF, it is difficult to disentangle the unique contribution of each of these. We discuss these findings and present the direction of future work that is planned to expand and refine the PRF scale for the PDI.

Adoptive Parent-Child Interaction Quality During the COVID-19 Pandemic in Brazil

ABSTRACT This study presents findings derived from an investigation into parent-child interactions among Brazilian adoptive families conducted through online recording and analysis. Participating parents enrolled in an online Parental Training Program titled Adoption: Beginning of New Bonds, which emphasized parental reflective function. Data collection spanned from March to November 2021, coinciding with the isolation measures imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil. The study aimed to delineate interaction patterns within the sampled group and assess whether any alterations occurred in these patterns pre- and post-program participation. The sample consisted of 23 adoptive parents who had adopted a child under the age of five from the public child welfare system. Video recordings of parent-child free play sessions were collected online both before and after program participation. Results indicated a significant difference in the proportion of parents demonstrating sensitivity toward their child, accompanied by a noticeable trend toward enhanced quality in child interaction with their caregivers. Furthermore, this study offers valuable insights for refining observational instruments within the context of adoption.

Association between the use of mobile touchscreen devices and the quality of parent-child interaction in preschoolers

The early use of mobile touchscreen devices (MTSDs), including smartphones and tablets, may reduce the frequency and quality of social interactions between children and parents, which could impact their relationship and have negative consequences on children's socio-cognitive development. In this study, we applied a parental questionnaire and a behavioral observational method in a laboratory setting (free and structured play sessions) to examine the association between preschool MTSD use and the quantity and quality of parent–child relationships. Our findings revealed that preschoolers who regularly use MTSDs (n = 47, aged 4–7 years, engaging in MTSD use for at least 2 h per week) are spending less time with their parents and exhibited lower quality interactions compared to non-users (n = 25). However, shared offline leisure time with parents serves as a protective factor among MTSD-users. Furthermore, our study demonstrated a positive association between parents' and children's media use. The results suggest that preschool MTSD use may have unfavorable effects on parent–child interactions, both in terms of quantity and quality. Alternatively, lower quantity and quality of parent–child interaction may lead to higher MTSD use in the child. Based on the results, the importance of engaging in sufficient offline family interactions besides digital media use should be emphasized to parents of preschoolers, and health organizations and governments should include this in their recommendations and policies concerning childhood digital media use.

Direct and indirect effects of mother's spatial ability on child's spatial ability: What role does the home environment play?

Individual differences in spatial thinking are predictive of children's math and science achievement and later entry into Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines. Little is known about whether parent characteristics predict individual differences in children's spatial thinking. This study aims to understand whether, and to what extent, mother's intrinsic (i.e., mental rotation) and extrinsic (i.e., spatial scaling) spatial ability directly and indirectly, via the variation in home spatial environment, predicts children's intrinsic and extrinsic spatial ability. A total of 165 mothers and their 4-6-year-old children were recruited to participate in a remote video session with an experimenter. Mothers were administered a forced-choice Intrinsic Spatial Toy Preference Task gauging their preference for highly spatial versus less spatial toys and asked questions with the Home Intrinsic Spatial Environmental Questionnaire about the frequency with which they engage their child in spatial activities at home. Mothers completed a Mental Rotations Test and a Spatial Scaling Task adapted for adults. Children were administered the Picture Rotation Task, the Spatial Scaling Task, and the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test. Structural equation modeling was used to examine direct and indirect, via home spatial environment and toy choices, influences of mother spatial ability on child spatial ability. Contrary to our predictions, we did not find direct, nor indirect, relations between mother and child spatial ability. These findings suggest that researchers should consider alternative conceptualizations of the early home spatial environment beyond the frequency of spatial play in the home. RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS: The identification of factors that predict individual differences in children's spatial ability is important in order to maximize STEM learning outcomes. Data collection was conducted remotely rather than in traditional preschool or laboratory settings. Contrary to our pre-registered hypotheses, no significant relations between mother spatial ability, the early home spatial environment, and children's development of spatial skills were found. Future research should consider examining the amount of spatial language used in the home or the quality of parent-child interactions during spatial play as potential explanations for individual differences in children's spatial ability.

Quantifying the Quality of Parent-Child Interaction Through Machine-Learning Based Audio and Video Analysis: Towards a Vision of AI-assisted Coaching Support for Social Workers

Attachment is the emotional bonding between a child and a caregiver. Whether or not there is a secure attachment in early childhood has a profound life-long impact on the child. In recent years, attachment-based interventions have been developed and implemented, especially with families from low socioeconomic backgrounds. One important aspect of the program is to assess the quality of parent-child interactions through audio/video recorded at home while parent-child dyads were engaged in semi-structured interaction tasks, such as “three-bag-assessment.” The current practice relies on human coders to rate the videos, which is a time-consuming process. Using a dataset of 220 video recordings of parent-child dyads collected at home as part of an attachment-based intervention program, we prototype a machine learning approach based on human body keypoints extracted from the posture analysis tool OpenPose and voice activity features derived from audio recordings. The results show that there are potential values in using machine learning to improve the coding efficiency of parent-child interactions. When further developed and improved, this kind of model may contribute to a new vision of AI-assisted parenting coaching support to make evidence-based interventions accessible and affordable at a large scale to children and families.

Systematic Literature Review of Parent-Child Interactions on Strengthening Children's Character

The research aims to analyze parent-child interactions to strengthen children's character through previous research. A thorough literature review was performed as the research methodology for this investigation (SLR). The studies included in this systematic review followed the PRISM (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Metanalyses) recommendations. The research results show that parent-child interactions play a crucial role in shaping children's positive character. Findings from various articles highlight the importance of playtime with children, conversation and language, and parent training programs can improve the quality and quantity of parent-child interactions which can strengthen children's character.

Peculiarities of the formation of early attachment models in children with traumatic experiences

This article presents the results of a meta-analysis of relevant studies published in English literature between 2010 and 2022, focusing on the definition of traumatic experience, types of psychological trauma, early attachment models, and the concept of mentalization. The search services PsycInfo, PubMed, APA Web-of-Science, and Research Gate were used to accomplish the set objectives. The influence of childhood traumatic events on the development of primary attachment models was explored. It was established that early attachment models are internal representations or perceptions formed during childhood, that determine a child’s perception of close individuals and their relationships. The effectiveness and scientifically substantiated aspects of the Neurosequential Model in Education and the Neurosequential Model of Therapeutics (NMT) in working with children who have experienced traumatic events are described. It was found that childhood traumatic experience affects seven main aspects of psychology: sensory development, dissociation (changes in consciousness), attachment, affect regulation, behavioral regulation, cognitive domain, self-awareness, and identity development. Each type of traumatic experience has its conditions, characteristics, mechanisms, and consequences for the formation of early attachment models in children and overall psychosocial functioning. Thus, understanding the entire spectrum of changes, including neurobiological aspects, is crucial when working with children who have experienced traumatic events and require specialized support. This analysis revealed that the quality of parent-child interaction depends on parents' ability to mentalize and their capacity to understand the child‘s inner world, which, in turn, influences the formation of early childhood attachment models. Depending on the presence or absence of traumatic experiences in a child's life, different attachment styles can be developed. The identified generalizations shed light on the pathogenesis of relationship trauma-related disorders and can be practically applied in the development and implementation of professional recommendations or programs for psychosocial support for children who have experienced traumatic events. Emphasizing the necessity for further empirical research to gain a more detailed understanding of this issue.

Assessment of Parent–Child Interaction Quality from Dyadic Dialogue

The quality of parent–child interaction is critical for child cognitive development. The Dyadic Parent–Child Interaction Coding System (DPICS) is commonly used to assess parent and child behaviors. However, manual annotation of DPICS codes by parent–child interaction therapists is a time-consuming task. To assist therapists in the coding task, researchers have begun to explore the use of artificial intelligence in natural language processing to classify DPICS codes automatically. In this study, we utilized datasets from the DPICS book manual, five families, and an open-source PCIT dataset. To train DPICS code classifiers, we employed the pre-trained fine-tuned model RoBERTa as our learning algorithm. Our study shows that fine-tuning the pre-trained RoBERTa model achieves the highest results compared to other methods in sentence-based DPICS code classification assignments. For the DPICS manual dataset, the overall accuracy was 72.3% (72.2% macro-precision, 70.5% macro-recall, and 69.6% macro-F-score). Meanwhile, for the PCIT dataset, the overall accuracy was 79.8% (80.4% macro-precision, 79.7% macro-recall, and 79.8% macro-F-score), surpassing the previous highest results of 78.3% accuracy (79% precision, 77% recall) averaged over the eight DPICS classes. These results show that fine-tuning the pre-trained RoBERTa model could provide valuable assistance to experts in the labeling process.

What contributes to false belief understanding in childhood? A multidimensional approach

False belief understanding (FBU), a core component of Theory of Mind (ToM), refers to the capacity to understand that other individuals act according to their beliefs even when those beliefs are inaccurate. FBU is an important aspect of socio-cognitive development in early childhood. A range of sociodemographic, temperamental, cognitive, and family factors are known to contribute separately to individual differences in FBU; however, these domains are typically studied in silos. This longitudinal study aimed to examine which of these factors are associated with FBU around the time of school entry. We evaluated 102 typically developing children at 2–5.5 years (predictive factors) and then at 4–7.5 years of age (FBU). The findings indicate that cognitive and family factors during the preschool years are associated with FBU at school entry. Specifically, child vocabulary and parent-child interaction quality were significant independent predictors of FBU.

The impact of a community-based music program during infancy onthe quality of parent-child language interactions.

The early language environment, especially high-quality, contingent parent-child language interactions, is crucial for a child's language development and later academic success. In this secondary analysis study, 89 parent-child dyads were randomly assigned to either the Music Together® (music) or play date (control) classes. Children were 9- to 15-month old at baseline, primarily white (86.7%) and female (52%). Measures of conversational turns (CTs) and parental verbal quality were coded from parent-child free play episodes at baseline, mid-intervention (month 6), and post-intervention (month 12). Results show that participants in the music group had a significantly greater increase in CT measures and quality of parent verbalization post-intervention. Music enrichment programs may be a strategy to enhance parent-child language interactions during early childhood.

Evaluating the Validity and Reliability of the Knowledge, and Practice Questionnaire of Iranian Mothers About the Development of Persian-speaking Children Aged 18 to 36 Months

Objectives: The mother’s knowledge and attitude about the child’s developmental norms can affect their practice and the quality of parent-child interaction. The quality of a child’s development in the early years significantly impacts their personality and future success. Therefore, this study aims to develop and investigate the psychometric characteristics of the Iranian mother’s knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) questionnaire about the development of communication, language, speech, and swallowing of Persian-speaking children aged 18 to 36 months and comparing them. Methods: This study was a descriptive-analytical and cross-sectional study conducted on 280 mothers with typically developed children aged 18 to 36 months from different provinces of Iran. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic with the implementation of the study, the participants were selected as available, and then the snowball completed the questionnaire in both face-to-face and online methods. To check the validity of the questionnaire, face validity was calculated using the opinion of speech therapy experts and ten mothers, and content validity was calculated using the Lawshe method. To check the reliability of the questionnaire, the test re-test method was used in a two-week interval. Results: The results indicated that this questionnaire has high validity (content validity index [CVI] >0.79) and reliability (intraclass correlation coefficient [ICC]=0.90). The multiple linear regression model showed that only the mother’s age has a significant positive relationship with knowledge ([B=0.082] P=0.04) about the development of communication, language, speech, and swallowing of children aged 18 to 36 months. Socioeconomic status and the mother’s education had no significant relationship with the mother’s KAP. Also, this study showed that the mother’s knowledge, attitude, and practice about a child’s development were high (mean=16.5), positive (mean=56.44), and good (mean=60.27). Discussion: This study showed that the designed questionnaire is a valid and reliable tool that can be used to investigate the mother’s KAP about the development of communication, language, speech, and swallowing of Persian-speaking children aged 18 to 36 months. On the other hand, speech and language pathologists can use this questionnaire in related studies and clinical evaluations to have better and more knowledge of the child’s environment and the factors affecting it in Persian-speaking society.

Parent coaching via telerehabilitation for young children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD): study protocol for a randomised controlled trial

BackgroundEarly parent-implemented intervention enhances parent-child interaction and improves language skills in children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Parent coaching is often delivered as standard care for children with ASD, where parents are taught to apply strategies in their child’s play activities and daily routines to achieve the prior stated goals. However, the ability to conduct parent coaching in physical in-clinic sessions is limited by resource constraints such as clinic space and therapist manpower. Furthermore, parents may experience difficulties with the generalisation of intervention strategies taught in the clinic to their natural home environments. In this study, telerehabilitation is evaluated as an alternative platform to deliver parent coaching for parent-implemented interventions to children with ASD in their homes.MethodsThis parallel-group, randomised, controlled, non-inferiority trial aims to evaluate the effectiveness of parent coaching delivered through video conferencing (telerehabilitation) versus in-clinic (standard care) delivery. Children aged 15 to 48 months (n = 200) who meet the cut-off score for ASD on the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule-2 are eligible. Parent-child dyads are randomly assigned to receive parent coaching either through weekly telerehabilitation or standard care. The primary outcome is the child’s development as measured by the subscale and composite scores of a standardised developmental assessment. Primary analysis will determine if the lower boundary of the 95% confidence interval for the mean difference in pre-post change between groups exceeds −5 (the non-inferiority margin). Secondary outcomes are the child’s adaptive behaviour, parent-child interaction, parental stress, and family quality of life. Outcomes will be measured pre-intervention, midterm, and post-intervention. Secondary analysis will determine if there is any between-group difference for the pre-post change in scores at the 5% significance level using two-sample t-test or Mann-Whitney U test.DiscussionAs a randomised controlled trial of a moderately large scale, this study will contribute to the limited existing literature on the effectiveness of parent coaching via telerehabilitation for early parent-implemented intervention for children with ASD. The results of this study will provide insights on whether telerehabilitation is comparable to conventional in-clinic parent coaching in enhancing parent-child interaction and improving language skills.Trial registrationClinicalTrials.gov NCT05792449. Страхи современных дошкольников в представлении родителей: результаты эмпирического исследования

<p>The article focuses on the results of an empirical study of preschoolers’ fears through the eyes of their parents. The research was conducted on the basis of the Center for Interdisciplinary Research on Contemporary Childhood in MSUPE in November 2022 – February 2023. Research methods included a questionnaire for parents of preschoolers elaborated by the research group and “Method of Regulating Fears and Anxiety in Children” by T. Rudskaya. 366 parents of preschoolers from different regions of the Russian Federation took part in the survey. The research provides information about the peculiarities of fears in contemporary Russian preschoolers, as well as on the association between children’s fears and such aspects of upbringing strategies as parents’ reactions to children’s fears and children’s “bad” behavior. In general, the empirical data testifies, that preschoolers’ fears are profoundly connected with the quality of parent-child interactions, which agrees with the results of Russian and foreign researchers.</p>
