Cultural rituality and heritage revitalization values of ancestral temple architecture painting art from the perspective of relational sociology theory

Recent research has primarily focused on the genealogical relationship between ancestral temple painting and its spatial carriers, highlighting a shift in perspective from artistry to symbolism to kinship. While some scholars have noted the influence of ritual culture on architectural painting, few have explored its kinship relationship with architectural carriers. By incorporating relational sociology theory, this study chronologically reviews events influencing the formation of ancestral temple ritual culture, constructs a developmental model, and conducts case studies on the ethicality of architectural painting art, thus establishing a relational sociology analysis framework. Findings: (1) Ancestral temple architectural painting exhibits the ethicality and educational value inherent in Confucian concepts; (2) Themes such as immortal life, literati and scholars, and common folk simplicity highlight the spiritual and material kinship of ancestral temple painting. The vocabulary used in titles such as "He (rapprochement-和)", "He (reunification-合)", "wealth (财)", "happiness (乐)", "blessing (福)", and "longevity (寿)" reveals a positive transmission of Confucian values; (3) The five main artistic expressions of ancestral temple painting are metaphor through objects (借物喻意), the personification of events (以人喻事), using the past to illuminate the present (借古喻今), expressing aspirations through objects (托物喻志), and pun-based symbolism (谐音寓意); (4) The decorative elements of ancestral temples correspond to the forms of their painting art, with the former extending the space of the tomb sacrificial system and the latter representing artistic inheritance. The development of ancestral temple architecture has formed dual developmental contexts centered on ritual culture and supplemented by academic dissemination, fluctuating with the status of Confucianism. The relational sociology model shows that the political aspects of ancestral temples form a sub-lineage of their ritual culture, closely linked to reforms in the educational system and transformations in building functions, further influencing architectural form and decorative art.

The color influence of dust in air pollutants on architectural painting: a case of archery tower at the West Gate in Shaanxi, China

At present, under the influence of environmental pollution, the color of architectural painting gradually darkens, loses luster, and even cracks when the pigment falls off, which seriously affects the long-term preservation of architectural painting. In order to study the damage mechanism of dust particles to the color of the architectural painting, this study took the archery tower at the West Gate as the research object, monitored the temperature and humidity of the indoor environment, and analyzed the composition of the dust by ICP-MS, IC, and XRD. The experimental results showed notable fluctuations in the indoor humidity in inner the archery tower at the West Gate during the monitoring period from January to March, which were not conducive to the preservation of wood-colored paintings. The 24-h average PM2.5 and PM10 concentrations, measured over 2 days in January, were beyond the National Ambient Air Quality Standard norms, and PM contains a large amount of soluble salts such as sulfate and nitrate, causing serious salt erosion and damage to the color painting layer. Through the simulation experiment of the color painting layer, it was revealed that the dust particles deposited on the surface of the color painting layer change the spectral characteristics of the color painting layer, and then cause the color layer to lose its original hue, fade become blurred, or darken. It was anticipated that this research would serve as a valuable reference for the preventive protection of the color painting layer of the archery tower at West Gate.

Forensic Discrimination of White Architectural Paints via ATR FT-IR Spectroscopy and Chemometrics

The present work entailed the comparative examination and discrimination of white architectural paint samples of different brands/manufacturers. The analysis of this evidence can facilitate exhibiting a linkage between the victim, and the crime scene and assist in the reconstruction of the crime scene. Architectural paint traces have evidential value, especially in cases of burglary, acts of vandalism, property crimes, etc. In the present study, a total of 102 samples of 34 distinct brands (3 samples of each brand) of white commercially available architectural paints were purchased and analysed using ATR FT-IR spectroscopy and multivariate analytical tools. The use of visual analysis of FTIR spectral data resulted in 12 undifferentiated/ indistinguishable sample pairs with a discrimination power of 97.86%. Adding PCA and PLS-DA in concert with visual analysis of FTIR spectra resulted in 99.4% (3 sample pairs undifferentiated) and 100% discrimination power, respectively. In conclusion, samples of each brand were completely differentiated using ATR FT-IR spectra subjected to the PLS-DA model. To assess the impact of different substrates on the examination of paint chips, simulated samples were produced on different substrates and the obtained results from the substrates study have been summarized. The ATR-FTIR spectroscopy therefore suggests an objective and rapid approach for the discrimination of white architectural paints for forensic purposes.

Menjadi Muslim Modern: Konstruksi Identitas Anak Muda Muslim di Kafe

This article discusses the construction of the Muslims youth identity in cafes. Cafes as a public habitus that is constructed modern and considered not 'Islamic' does not mean that it has no relationship with Islam. Therefore, this article seeks to answer the question of what is the relationship between Islam, cafes, and social media? So, to what extent do Muslims youth access cafes? Finally, how do Muslims youth construct their identity of piety and youth in a café? To answer these questions, the authors conducted fieldwork in the form of observations and interviews with café owners and several youths with a narrative approach. Then public space theory, identity theory and digital production theory were used to analyze research data. The results of this study found that the relationship between cafes, Islam and social media manifested in the activities of young Muslims themselves, especially in consuming café public spaces such as enjoying food and beverage products, wifi facilities, prayer facilities, and taking pictures. Muslim youth not only access the symbols of café modernity and post them on social media, but also access the café's worship facilities. These three practices, both in consuming symbols of café modernity such as café architectural design and painting art on coffee (latte art), then uploading it to social media and doing prayer practices in cafes are ways for young people to construct their pious and youthful identity while in the café. This finding deconstructs the long-held view by some scholars or the public that cafes are considered public spaces that have no connection with Islam.

Coating of micropolar fluid during non-isothermal reverse roll coating phenomena

Reverse roll coating is a high-speed coating process used in many applications. The single largest application for reverse roll coating is applying architectural paint to coils of sheet metal; however, in the converting industry reverse roll coating is used for some thermal coatings, adhesives, color laser paper receivers, wax coatings, magnetic coatings, vinyl dispersions for wallcovering, some specialty light sensitive applications, and many specialty products that require a high precision application process. This work presents a mathematical model for the steady flow of non-isothermal, incompressible, micropolar fluid in the metering nip of a reverse roll coater with velocity slip applied at both roll’s surfaces. Lubrication approximation theory (LAT) is utilized to reduce the complexity of the non-dimensional equations. Exact solutions for pressure gradient, velocity, and temperature are achieved. At the same time, numerical techniques (Simpson’s 3/8 rule with Newton Raphson method) are used to compute the pressure distribution, coating thickness, flow rate, and separation points. Effects of coupling number, slip parameter, microrotation, and velocity ratio on velocity, pressure, temperature, and pressure gradient are presented in graphs. It is observed from the current analysis that the intrinsic rotations of the fluid particles prove to be the controlling parameter of the pressure gradient, which significantly varies the coating thickness. Also, as a result of velocity slip, the flow rate declines and the coating thickness reduces as the fluid moves faster along the boundary walls.

Urban Environment Design in Youth Slang Interpretation: Linguo-Axiological and Lexicographical Aspects

The linguistic and axiological potential of unofficial urbanonyms reflecting the realities of the urban environment as a design space is evaluated. The research tasks include identifying typical and non-standard objects and motifs of evaluative urbanonymic nomination, developing optimal methods for describing interregional nominative parallels and unique slang terms in the dictionary of unofficial urbanonyms. The material sources consist of dictionaries of youth slang, author’s archives of spoken language, and internet communications (2010—2024). The semantics of slang terms-urbanonyms were clarified using componential and contextual analysis methods. Parameters of their lexical description were developed using the method of lexicographical construction. Based on slang material from Pskov and St. Petersburg involving unofficial urbanonyms from Ufa, Volgograd, Novosibirsk, and other cities, the evaluative attitude of nominators towards design projects embodied in architectural structures, memorial objects, street sculpture, and monumental painting is demonstrated. Interpretations, comments, and contextual illustrations in the presented fragments of the projected dictionary reveal the specificity of the nominator’s imagery associations when implementing various ways of slang formation: playful transformations of official names, references to precedent phenomena, metonymic and metaphorical transfers and their combinations.

Through an analysis of historical and contemporary examples, the research elucidates the cultural significance and aesthetic principles underlying this symbiotic relationship. By examining the interplay between architectural space and pictorial composition, this study offers insights into the unique artistic traditions of Uzbekistan and their enduring influence on architectural design and decorative arts.

A Study on the Materials Used in Ancient Wooden Architectural Paintings at DaZhong Gate in Confucius Temple, Qufu, Shandong, China.

This study analyzes the pigments and binders used in the painted wooden structure of DaZhong Gate in the Confucius Temple in Qufu, Shandong Province, China. Five samples were collected from the building and analyzed using techniques such as polarized light microscopy (PLM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), micro-Raman spectroscopy (m-RS), and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). The findings reveal that the red, yellow, green, and blue pigments are identified as lead red, lead chromate yellow, emerald green, and ultramarine, respectively. The white pigment is determined to be a combination of chalk and lead white or anglesite. Considering the production period of the yellow and green pigments, it is inferred that architectural paintings underwent restoration or repainting during the late Qing Dynasty. The analysis of the binder in the pigment using pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS) reveals that the binder employed is a protein-based glue. Additionally, the detected presence of Heat-bodied tung oil suggests a potential connection to traditional Chinese painting techniques on wooden surfaces. This discovery not only contributes to the historical research of the Confucius Temple but also provides crucial data for the conservation and restoration efforts of this culturally significant heritage site.

Pskov is an ancient Russian city known for its unique architecture, rich historical and cultural heritage. It attracts many tourists annually. Pskov architecture is an integral part of Russian culture and art. The paper presents brief overview of the tourist walking route around Pskov. However, this route forms a kind of sacred ring, including the external band of stone walls of the Kroma stone. It is an example of a unique architectural school of military architecture, temple heritage, and fresco painting. Hence, Pskovites preserved sacred traditions from ancient times, and successfully involved the modern architectural decisions into national art development.

Study on Carbonation of Porcine Blood Hydrogel in the Composite Mortar of Ancient Chinese Architectural Painting.

In the ancient Chinese recipe for composite mortar used in the construction of ground layers for architectural painting, the mixture of porcine blood and lime water is one of the constituent materials. Herein, according to the traditional recipe, the interaction between porcine blood and lime water was systematically and deeply investigated. The experimental investigation demonstrated that porcine blood mixed with lime water at the ratio found in the recipe can form a hydrogel with a hydrophobic surface. During air-drying, the lime water in porcine blood hydrogel can react with CO2 to form calcium carbonate. The crystal morphology of the formed calcium carbonate depends on the surrounding micro-environment of calcium ions in the porcine blood hydrogel. The formed morphology of calcium carbonate includes small calcite crystallites, small graininess calcite crystals with round features, calcite aggregates with layered ladder-like structures, and amorphous calcium carbonate (ACC). Interestingly, the calcium carbonate formed in the inner part of the porcine blood hydrogel exhibits lamellar distribution due to a Liesegang pattern formation. Based on the findings that the porcine blood hydrogel has surface hydrophobicity and brittleness, it can be predicted that in the preparation process of composite mortar for ancient building color painting base course, porcine blood used in the form of a hydrogel is not only easier to be dispersed in hydrophobic tung oil than in liquid porcine blood but also the affinity between porcine blood gel and tung oil is enhanced. As constituent material dispersed in the composite mortar, the layered distribution of calcium carbonate in the porcine blood hydrogel may presumably be beneficial to reduce the internal stress of the composite mortar material.

Mechanism for formation of porcine blood hydrogels used as additives in the mortar of traditional Chinese architectural painting

Ancient Chinese architecture drawing is a unique form of ancient Chinese art. Porcine blood hydrogels are distinctive ingredients used to prepare the composite material of the substrate layer for architecture drawing. This investigation was focused on the mechanism for porcine blood hydrogel formation. Based on the traditional Chinese recipe for the preparation of porcine blood-lime mortar, samples with different ratios of porcine blood and lime water were prepared, and the molecular-scale interactions between the lime water and proteins in the porcine blood were examined with FTIR spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, XRD, XPS, fluorescence spectroscopy, contact angle and rheology studies. The mechanical properties and morphological features of the samples were detected with a rheometer, universal material testing machine and SEM. The results indicated that an appropriate amount of lime water was required for gelation of the porcine blood. With the appropriate alkalinity, sufficient carboxyl groups on the fibrin chains were deprotonated, and coordination with Ca2+ ions formed enough cross-links for support networks within the structure of the porcine blood hydrogel. Complexation of deprotonated carboxyl groups on the fibrin chains with Ca2+ ions led to the formation of a hydrophobic surface due alterations of the fibrin conformation and increased the adhesive properties of the hydrogel. With the hydrogel used as an ingredient in the preparation of a substrate layer composite, it is suggested that the hydrophobic surface of the hydrogel facilitated mixing with hydrophobic tung oil during preparation of the composite material, and strong adhesion of the hydrogel increased the mechanical strength and crack resistance of the substrate layer.

A Brief Analysis of the Role of Architectural Aesthetics in Chinese Architectural Education from the Perspective of Mental Health

With the progress of the times, Chinese education must enable students to understand that architecture is not only a tool for life, but also an artistic creation. Architectural aesthetics also involves historical, cultural, and social factors, as well as psychological health. To cultivate architects with good artistic cultivation, it is necessary to increase education in art, aesthetics, psychology, and humanities such as traditional architectural theory, Chinese traditional philosophy, Chinese and Western architectural aesthetics, aesthetic principles, Chinese and foreign art history, mental health, architectural geomantic omen, literature, calligraphy and painting appreciation, sculpture, photography, etc. In recent years, some art colleges in China, such as the Central Academy of Fine Arts and the Academy of Fine Arts of Shanghai University, have successively introduced the subject of architecture, which is a great experiment and makes up for the shortcomings of traditional engineering and architecture colleges that focus on technology and light art. In terms of architecture education, it is necessary to cultivate students' creative thinking and enhance their artistic cultivation, and closely unite architectural aesthetics with mental health. In this regard, we are continuously discussing teaching methods, summing up teaching experience, and introducing new ideas to keep pace with the times.

Toxicity of Aged Paint Particles to Soil Ecosystems: Insights from Caenorhabditis elegans.

Despite the extensive global consumption of architectural paint, the toxicological effects of aged exterior paint particles on terrestrial biota remain largely uncharacterized. Herein, we assessed the toxic effect of aged paint particles on soil environments using the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) as a test organism. Various types of paint particles were generated by fragmentation and sequential sieving (500-1000, 250-500, 100-250, 50-100, 20-50 μm) of paint coatings collected from two old residential areas. The paint particles exerted different levels of toxicity, as indicated by a reduction in the number of C. elegans offspring, depending on their size, color, and layer structure. These physical characteristics were found to be closely associated with the chemical heterogeneity of additives present in the paint particles. Since the paint particle sizes were larger than what C. elegans typically consume, we attributed the toxicity to leachable additives present in the paint particles. To assess the toxicity of these leachable additives, we performed sequential washings of the paint particles with distilled water and ethanol. Ethanol washing of the paint particles significantly reduced the soil toxicity of the hydrophobic additives, indicating their potential environmental risk. Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis of the ethanol leachate revealed the presence of alkyl amines, which exhibited a high correlation with the toxicity of the paint particles. Further toxicity testing using an alkyl amine standard demonstrated that a paint particle concentration of 1.2% in soil could significantly reduce the number of C. elegans offspring. Our findings provide insights into the potential hazards posed by aged paint particles and their leachable additives in the terrestrial environment.

Green synthesis of silver nanoparticles using Saccharum officinarum leaf extract for antiviral paint

Abstract In this study, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were synthesized via an eco-friendly approach using an extract from sugarcane leaves (Saccharum officinarum). The optimal synthesis conditions were determined to be a pH of 10, yielding AgNPs with an average size of 11.7 ± 2.8 nm. This was substantiated by UV-vis spectral analysis, transmission electron microscopy, and field emission transmission electron microscope coupling with selected area electron diffraction. The synthesized AgNPs exhibited notable antibacterial efficacy against two prominent pathogens, namely Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, with minimum inhibitory concentration values of 20 and 2.5 ppm, respectively. Further extending the applications of AgNPs, they were successfully integrated into architectural paints at varying concentrations to create antiviral coatings. The addition of AgNPs influenced several properties of the paints, including viscosity, hiding power, and color characteristics. Notably, our findings revealed that the antiviral paint containing 80 ppm of AgNPs effectively hindered virus propagation, exhibiting a remarkable reduction of over 90% when compared to the control, measured by 50% tissue culture infectious dose.

Precise in-situ detection of inorganic pigments in ancient architectural color paintings by HH-XRF

The handheld X-ray fluorescence spectrometer (HH-XRF) is commonly used to detect the inorganic elemental composition of pigments on-site. However, the accuracy of in-situ detection results can be affected by the characteristics of the painted surface contaminants and the layered structure of pigments in ancient architectural color paintings. To mitigate this error, a method was proposed that combined the XRF spectra of inorganic pigments with the elemental concentration values obtained through principal component analysis (PCA). Additionally, this study discussed the typical surface contaminants and pigment layering found in color paintings separately. Firstly, experiments were conducted on dust accumulation layers of varying thicknesses. The results indicated that the condition of color paintings after pretreatment of dust accumulation tended to resemble the situation with thin dust accumulation during in-situ testing. A fitting formula was derived to establish a relationship between field testing and laboratory testing results. Secondly, experiments were conducted using various combinations of pigment layers. Based on the findings, it was hypothesized that there was a connection between XRF detection results and the maximum concentration value of a single element (as determined by XRF, in an unmixed or unlayered pigment sample without dust or smoke accumulation). The test results were fitted using a Polynomial formula, providing evidence for the existence of a nonlinear functional relationship between these two variables. Finally, an empirical formula for predicting the concentration values of the top color layer with different base colors was proposed. This study offered a precise method for accurately assessing pigments of ancient architectural color paintings through in-situ testing.

The architectural object itself, such as buildings or constructions, is often an independent work of art. Peter. It is worth quoting here a statement by Waldemar Januszczak "Where in these mentioned works by Bernini does architecture end and art begin? Or is it the other way around?" (Januszczak W). The research in the present work has been focused in particular on a cross-sectional view of the links between architectural motifs and paintings, combined with the creation of perspective, also with the aid of a camera obscura. The subject matter discussed in this article is extremely extensive, because almost every artist, and we are talking only about these great masters, has in his dossier works showing architectural elements, even in the background. This minireview, by necessity, includes only selected works that are an individual choice of the author.
