Challenges and Coping Strategies of Intermediate Teachers in Handling Generation Z Learners

The learners as of the present are called Generation Z learners. This study aimed to come up with the common challenges and coping strategies of teachers in handling Generation Z learners in the intermediate level. The study was conducted during the school year 2019-2020. The participants were the intermediate teachers in District 10 of Ozamiz City Division. This study employed a phenomenological qualitative research design. The focus of this study was to gather the common challenges and coping strategies of teachers based on their experiences. The responses were analyzed through the use of thematic analysis. It was found out that the challenges commonly met by the intermediate teachers were learners’ difficult behaviors, negative impact of technology/inappropriate use of technology and poor academic performance. The study also revealed that the coping strategies of the teachers were ICT integration in teaching, imposing friendly classroom discipline, parent-teacher partnership, and enhancing teachers’ ICT literacy. This study suggested that in planning teachers’ training programs, administrators of the Department of Education should also include topics that focuses on how to cope up teachers’ challenges met in their classrooms. Topics may involve handling Generation Z learners and developing necessary skills in innovative teaching.

Teachers’ Pedagogical Practices in Relation to Students’ Motivation in Blended Learning

The emergence of the new normal in education has brought about the need for effective classroom management strategies from teachers and an unwavering commitment to learning from students. In light of this, this study aimed to investigate the relationship between teachers' pedagogical practices and students' motivation in a blended learning setting. The research was conducted at Misamis University in Ozamiz City, utilizing a descriptive-correlational research design. The study involved 120 students who were selected through purposive and quota sampling techniques. To gather the necessary data, researcher-made questionnaires on Teachers' Pedagogical Practices and Students' Motivation in Blended Learning were administered. The data were then analyzed using mean and standard deviation as well as Pearson Product-Moment Correlation Coefficient. The results revealed that teachers' pedagogical practices in blended learning were of a very high standard, with students reporting a correspondingly high level of motivation in the modality. The findings suggest that teachers have made a concerted effort to adapt to the new learning modality and that blended learning has been successful in motivating college students. In light of the study's findings, it is recommended that teachers continue to innovate and refine their pedagogical practices in blended learning to maintain high levels of student motivation in the teaching-learning process.

The Reintegration of Ex-Convicts in Society: A Case Study

Reintegration into society is one of the things that Persons Deprived of Liberty or those who committed crimes and are serving their sentences inside a correctional institution look forward to. The restoration of freedom and the thought of spending time with their families brought them so much joy and comfort amidst all their experiences and struggles. This study explored the life of seven ex-convicts in their reintegration into society, particularly Ozamiz City. It utilized the case study design using Yin's method of data analysis. This study yielded the following themes: having difficulty applying for a job, struggling to earn a living, feeling indifference among family members and relatives, enduring the negative treatment of other people, trying to start a new life, having a positive outlook in life despite hardship, and aiming to reconcile with their families. In addition, this study showed that most ex-convicts had experienced challenges that tested their patience and views in life, yet they encouraged themselves to look for the brighter side of life. Thus, the researcher recommends revisiting for enhancement the briefing and debriefing conducted before the reintegration of the ex-convicts with their families, and a government program may be created for ex-convicts to have employment opportunities.

Navigating Nuances: Intermediate Teachers’ Experiences Handling Generation Z Learners

Education in the 21st century is centered on equipping new learners with skills relevant to their daily lives, particularly Generation Z learners. As the backbone of the education system, teachers must have the competence and skills to effectively teach and cater to this cohort's unique needs. This study aimed to explore the specific challenges and coping strategies of teachers handling Generation Z learners at the intermediate level. This study employed a phenomenological research design involving twelve (12) intermediate teachers in District 10 of Ozamiz City. Thematic analysis was used to examine the data revealing commonly faced challenges, including Generation Z learners' disruptive behaviour, inappropriate use of technology, and poor academic performance. Furthermore, it was revealed that intermediate teachers use varied coping strategies in handling Generation Z learners. These strategies include the application of proper classroom discipline, partnership between parents and teachers, and enhancing teachers' ICT literacy. The result of this study offers valuable perspectives for teachers, school administration, and policymakers. In conclusion, addressing these challenges can elevate Generation Z learners' learning experiences and improve their academic performance. Furthermore, it encourages teachers to be more innovative and prepared to meet the demands of 21st-century education.

Teachers' Pedagogical Practices in Relation to Students' Motivation in Blended Learning

In this vein, this study aimed to investigate the relationship between teachers' pedagogical practices and students' motivation in blended learning modality. The research was conducted in one of the private institutions in Ozamiz City, Philippines. The descriptive-correlational research design was used in the study, 120 college students as respondents and were selected through purposive and quota sampling techniques. Researcher-madeTeachers' Pedagogical Practices and Students' Motivation in Blended Learning Questionnaires were used in gathering the data that were analyzed using Mean and Standard Deviation as well as Pearson Product-Moment Correlation Coefficient.Results revealed that teachers' pedagogical practices in blended learning were to a very great extent and the level of the students’ motivation was very high. It was also found that the teachers’ pedagogical practices had very high influence on the students’ motivation in the learning modality used. The study concluded that the practices of teachers in delivering education to the students had an impact on how motivated the latter were in their studies. Thus, it is recommended that teachers continue to enhance and innovate their pedagogical practices in blended learning to keep the students highly motivated in the teaching-learning process.
 

Perceptions, Challenges and Coping Strategies of Mathematics Teachers in the Implementation of Limited Face-To-Face Classes

This study investigated how mathematics teachers at Ozamiz City School of Arts and Trades perceived the implementation of limited face-to-face classes. The researcher purposively identified ten (10) secondary mathematics teachers, parents, and students who have participated in the implementation of limited face-to-face classes. A semi-structured interview was utilized to interview the Mathematics teachers, parents, and students at OCSAT. All online and offline interviews were recorded and verified because the researcher sought to capture the data precisely and comprehensively. Using Merriam Case Study Model, particularly a three-component triangulation, the outcome is supported by the feedback from parents and students to have an authenticity of results from the main respondents. This model helps identify the perceptions, challenges encountered, coping strategies, and suggestions and recommendations by the mathematics teachers in implementing limited face-to-face classes. Results showed that mathematics teachers acquire a sense of positivity because, with almost two (2) years of modular distance learning, teachers become excited to teach again. However, disadvantages occur using this modality that make teachers drained physically and mentally. With inconsistent findings using dissonance theory, the need to resume full in-person instruction was concluded.

Tasks Beyond Instruction: A Case Study on Teachers’ Ancillary Functions

Teachers play multi-faceted roles. In addition to teaching, they also perform duties not directly related to teaching but are part of school’s operations. As one of the rural schools in the Division of Ozamiz City, Sangay Integrated School teaching personnel are tasked to take multiple ancillary functions. This study explored the experiences of teachers having ancillary functions in Sangay IS for the School Year 2022-2023. It employed a case study research design where twelve (12) Sangay Integrated School served as the participants of this study. It utilized a semi-structured interview, and the data gathered were analyzed using Braun and Clarke’s thematic analysis. It generated five (5) themes, which answered the five (5) research problems. Based on the findings, teachers regard ancillary functions as additional tasks. These functions help teachers in their personal and professional development; however, time for instruction and family is sacrificed. To overcome this challenge, they employed workload management. They realized they needed assistance from more knowledgeable individuals to function effectively and efficiently, which can be done through mentoring, seminars, and training. It is recommended that school leaders may evenly distribute ancillary loads. Teachers may also create a checklist to balance their time well on what things are needed to do. An orientation for newly-appointed coordinators may also be done for their awareness of their responsibilities. The Department of Education may also employ a thorough and accurate time-use study that can clearly show which tasks should be assigned to teachers and which should be removed from their responsibility.

Teachers’ Teaching Practices and Students’ Self-Concept in Relation To Problem-Solving Performance

The teachers’ teaching practices and the students’ self-concept play a vital role in the performance of students in Mathematics. This study explored the extent of Mathematics teachers' teaching practices and the level of the students' self-concept toward mathematics in relation to problem-solving performance. It was conducted on a total of 111 Grade 10 students who participated in the limited face-to-face classes in all secondary schools in District 10 of the Division of Ozamiz City. This study employed a descriptive-correlational research design. Questionnaires and a problem-solving test were utilized in gathering the data that were analyzed and interpreted using Mean, Standard Deviation, Pearson Product-Moment Correlation Coefficient, and Stepwise Multiple Regression Analysis. Results showed that the Mathematics teachers' teaching practices were demonstrated to a great extent. The students have a fair level of learned self-concept, organized self-concept, and a good level of dynamic self-concept. However, the students' performance in problem-solving did not meet the expectations of the standards set by the DepEd. It was found that there was a significant relationship between the teachers' use of mathematical representations in teaching and the students' problem-solving performance in Mathematics. Furthermore, there was a significant relationship between students' dynamic self-concept and problem-solving performance. The use of mathematical representations of teachers and students' dynamic self-concepts were the predictors of students' problem-solving performance.

Identifying the Subanens among the Lumads: A Case Study on Subaben Culture in the Philippines

The Indigenous Peoples Rights Act of 1997 codified the use of Indigenous Peoples as reference to the ethnic minorities of the Philippines. Government officials and volunteers from the non-governmental organizations [NGOs], and the academic institutions, however, use the term Lumad as a reference to all ethnic minorities in Mindanao that share no common narrative. This paper is a case study exploring the lifestyles, and culture of the Subanens of Guimad, Ozamiz City, and whether they befit the existing Lumad Narratives. The use of term Lumad as reference to the Subanens of Guimad, Ozamiz City and all other ethnic minorities should be evaluated in order to guarantee that the distinct diverse identities, and cultures of these ethnic minorities are not reduced into a common, singular narrative.

Challenges Encountered by School Administrators During the New Normal Education: A Phenomenological Study

The new normal education poses a great challenge to learners, parents, and other stakeholders and, more importantly, school administrators in delivering the new learning modality. This study explored the challenges encountered by administrators of integrated schools in the Division of Ozamiz City during the School Year 2021-2022. The phenomenological research design was used in the study, with nine school administrators as the participants selected through purposive sampling. An Interview Guide was used in gathering the data through face-to-face and virtual interviews. The Moustakas’ steps for data analysis were used in analyzing the data gathered. Results revealed four themes: lack of school preparedness for the new modality; difficulty in soliciting parents’ cooperation and involvement; communication and monitoring barriers; and the uncertainty of the effectiveness of modular distance learning. The study concludes that implementing the new normal education posed several challenges to school administrators as one of the forerunners of the new learning modality.

Lived Experiences of Parents with Child at Risk

Parents play a crucial role in the full development of the child. Parents are the child's first role model that influences them in the basic values, like religious values, and issues related to their future, like educational choices that will tend to prevent them from engaging in illegal activities. This study was conducted to determine the lived experiences of parents with children at risk in Barangay Carangan, Ozamiz City, Misamis Occidental. It is a phenomenological study where the researchers made interview guide questions to gather data on the parents' lived experiences. The study was conducted on randomly selected parents with at-risk children in Barangay Carangan, Ozamiz City. Moreover, seven parents with children at risk were purposely selected to be part of the research study participants. The participants were selected with the criteria where Parents of a Child at Risk/custody of the child in Barangay Carangan, Ozamiz City, have difficulties coping with their child at risk and are willing to participate in the study. Four themes were identified in the study: Emotionally Stressed, Parental Acceptance, Giving a Child at Risk Effective and Positive Discipline, and Proper Parenting Approach. The study's findings show that most parents with children at risk experienced emotional stress, parental acceptance, giving their child at risk effective and positive discipline, and proper parenting approach. However, some Children at Risk tend not to listen to their parent's advice and choose to be with their peers or groups prone to committing illegal acts. Through this, the parents will have ni choice but to accept their children's decisions. Even though their child committed illegal acts, they still gave effective and positive discipline with a proper parenting approach in handling their child at risk. Therefore, it was recommended that Parents with Child At Risk in Barangay Carangan, Ozamiz City, continue to give effective and positive discipline in handling with risky behavior of their children at risk to avoid them and prevent them from committing other illegal acts. Moreover, parents encouraged children to always follow and listen to their parent's advice to avoid and prevent them from committing or engaging in another illegal act because if the child at risk is disciplined and making their current situation as their teacher, it can reduce the burden of emotional stressed of the parents and that will create a healthy environment for them

Level of Satisfaction of the Community on the Operational Plan Against Deadly Weapon of the Philippine National Police

The Philippine National Police plays a vital role in maintaining peace and order and ensuring public safety in society. The PNP builds and maintains positive relationships with the communities they serve, promoting trust and cooperation between law enforcement and the public. The study determined the level of satisfaction of the community towards the conduct of the Operational Plan of the Philippine National Police in Ozamiz City. The respondents of the study included the Business Owners, crews, and customers of resto-bars in Ozamiz City, Misamis Occidental, Philippines. An adapted survey questionnaire was the primary instrument utilized in gathering data for the study. Results revealed that the business owners, crews, and customers are very satisfied with the operational Plan of the PNP in Ozamiz City in terms of the procedure, documentation, the attitude of the PNP, and how committed they are to their jobs during the operation. The researchers recommended continuous training and education of the police officers so that it can help develop the necessary and new skills, and attitudes and keep up with the latest trends and best practices in law enforcement to perform their duties effectively and responsibly.

The Journey of Advanced Reserve Officer Training Course Cadets: Balancing Academics, Leadership, and Military Training

This study explored the experiences of the advanced reserve officers training course cadets as a student. The study was conducted at Misamis University, Ozamiz City. Ten advanced ROTC Officers at Misamis University, Ozamiz City, were interviewed using a structured questionnaire made by the researcher. The study used Moustaka’s Transcendental Analysis of the data. The phenomenological study revealed five main themes: economic burden; physical and mental stability; age, height, grade requirement; time management, and self-discipline. This research posits that advanced ROTC officers experience various challenges regarding their overall well-being. Economic burden and physical and mental instability have been part of the officers’ experiences. Qualifications of being an advanced ROTC officer are evident, as well as the countermeasures in coping with the challenges: time management and self-discipline. Advanced ROTC officers may explore ways in which they can use to sustain their financial needs. They may seek the support of a physician to aid their mental and physical health. Families should provide them with time, care, and support, constantly asking for their overall welfare.

Unveiling the Stories of the Rehabilitation Center Personnel in Dealing with Mentally Challenged Individuals: Phenomenological Study

This study explored the experience of personnel during their duties in It Works! Chemical Dependency Treatment Center, Tinago, Ozamiz City. The study used a qualitative approach using the phenomenological study Research design. Ten personnel from It Works! Tinago, Ozamiz City, who encountered many Challenges in dealing with mental challenges, were considered participants of the study. They were selected based on the following criteria: (1) personnel of the Rehabilitation center, (2) in serving six (6) months, (3) have direct contact with handling mentally challenged individuals, (4) willingness to participate. An interview was used to gather data. Analysis of the responses was done using Moustakas’ follow a flinty systematic procedure accessible to qualitative research transcendental phenomenological study. Results generated five themes: Passionate to help, Adversity in Dealing with Diverse Mentally Challenged Individuals, Maintaining Professionalism, and Ensuring the safety and well-being of the Patients; each employee at the rehabilitation center has a personal story about how they became interested in working with mentally challenged people. Hence, personnel must be physically, emotionally, and mentally ready when helping individuals find recovery.

The Untold Stories of The Police Officer in Responding Community Conflict: A Phenomenological Study

This study aims to address a gap in the existing literature on Law Enforcement studies by interviewing the 2nd Provincial Mobile Force Company (PMFC) in Ozamiz City to identify their issues and concerns related to law enforcement. The study participants were eight law enforcers whose responses were analyzed to identify appropriate themes. The gathered data revealed four main themes: (1) Alcohol Influence, (2) Family Conflict, (3) Lack of Communication, and (4) Conflict between Minors in the Street. In conclusion, the findings of this study shed light on important issues faced by the 2nd PMFC in Ozamiz City regarding law enforcement. Addressing these concerns through targeted interventions, such as alcohol education, family support, improved communication, and programs for minors, can contribute to the prevention and resolution of community conflicts. Law enforcement agencies can proactively address these themes and foster safer and more harmonious communities.

Managing Children at the Bahay PAG-ASA: Experiences of the Personnel Handling Varied In-House Personalities

The Philippine laws exempt children from criminal liability and subjects them to an intervention program where the facility personnel must guide and care for them as parents. However, the juvenile delinquents housed in these facilities may vary in character and attitudes, and most of them are in the stage of adolescence which can have a salient impact on the relationship between the house parents and the children. This study explores the experiences of house parents who work with Children in Conflict with the Law (CICL) and Children at Risk (CAR) in Bahay Pag-asa, a youth rehabilitation center in the Philippines. Using an interview guide and recording devices, the researchers gathered data from 8 personnel from the only Pag-asa Youth Home in Ozamiz City. This study applied the qualitative research method using a phenomenological methodology to interpret data from research participants to obtain meaningful themes. The findings reveal five themes: Varied Emotions, Building Positive Relationships with the Children, CICL being more Challenging to Handle Compared to CAR, Children Escaping, and Communicating in a Calm and Understanding Manner. Despite the challenges, the participants are still committed to their work and desire to make a positive impact on the lives of the children they serve. The study concludes that building strong relationships with children based on trust, respect, communication, and empathy is critical to the children’s development and progress as well as to their relationship between the house parents. Furthermore, special approaches may be necessary in handling these children given their trauma and mental health issues. In other words, insufficient resources make it challenging to provide adequate care and assistance. The researchers recommend that house parents at Bahay Pag-asa receive basic trainings on handling juvenile delinquents, strategies for managing challenging behaviors, and techniques for promoting positive behavior. They also suggest providing stress-relieving activities for the house parents, such as counseling sessions, mindfulness practices, and self-care opportunities, to prevent burnout and promote their ability to care for the children in a safe and nurturing environment.

Reserve Officers’ Training Corps: A Case Study on The Aspiring Advance Officers

Reserve Officer Training Corps, aspirants struggled too much in training and academic requirements. This study explored the challenges and coping mechanisms encountered and employed by aspiring advanced ROTC officers in adhering to their training and academics. It was participated by the aspirants in Misamis University, Ozamiz City, Misamis Occidental. Interview responses were analyzed using Yin's 5-Step analysis approach to analyze the data and allow researchers to analyze textual data (Yin, 2009). This study generated four themes 1. Family, Relatives, and Peer Influence 2. Difficulties in coping with academic-related concerns 3. Gearing towards the achievement of becoming an officer 4. Positive Outlook. As a result, most participants face different challenges and coping mechanisms in responding to ROTC training and academic requirements. These challenges create an impact physically and mentally, which is extremely stressful during training and in dealing with academics. Given that participants in the ROTC program come from diverse backgrounds and have varying levels of experience and preparation for military training and academic requirements. ROTC programs must recognize these differences and tailor their training and support accordingly. This may involve providing additional resources and support to participants struggling with certain aspects of the training or academic requirements, as well as recognizing and accommodating the unique challenges faced by participants from different backgrounds and determining the importance of resilience and adaptability in the face of challenges. ROTC participants who can develop effective coping mechanisms and strategies for managing the program's demands are more likely to succeed and excel in their training. By acknowledging and addressing the diverse challenges and coping mechanisms of ROTC cadets, the program can help build the resilience and adaptability of the cadets, which will be valuable in their future military endeavours. Further, the aspirants learned the use of managing their time wisely. This study highlights the importance of a positive outlook, time management, and resilience in dealing with challenges in training and academics.

Coping Strategies and Self-Actualization among the Rehabilitated Drug-Users: A Case Study

The study aimed to explore the coping strategies and self-actualization of the rehabilitated drug-users. Using an interview guide, the researchers gathered data from 8 rehabilitated drug-users from the IT Works Chemical Dependency Treatment Center in Ozamiz City. The study utilized the qualitative research method using Yin’s 5-step data analysis approach to obtain meaningful themes. The findings reveal five themes: recovered through spirituality, managing self-control to prevent relapse, communication and good diversion of bad habits, importance of self-management and, choose dependable acquaintances. The rehabilitated drug users come up with coping strategies by recovering through spirituality, managing their self-control to prevent relapse, and having communication and good diversion of bad habits. The rehabilitated drug-users also attained self-actualization through realizing the importance of self-management and choosing dependable acquaintances. The researchers recommend that rehabilitated drug-users should continue the routine that helps them recover during their rehabilitation to prevent having relapse. The researchers also suggest that the families of the rehabilitated drug-users should provide physical, emotional, psychological, and spiritual support to help prevent the rehabilitated drug-user from going back into his addiction.

Reserved Officer Training Corps: The Voice of the Aspirant Cadets’ Parents

Parents of the aspirant cadets are concerned that the youngsters might be subjected to violence as a result of the training. This study explored the worries and concerns of the parents of the cadets at Misamis University, Ozamiz City. There were ten (10) participants in this research who were selected through purposive sampling. The qualitative type of research using a case study with Yin’s method of data analysis was used. There were six themes that emerged in this study, namely: (1) the happiness of the parents, (2) parental support: financial and emotional (3) the application of knowledge in their daily lives, (4) pessimistic prospects of the parents, (5) physical exhaustion, and (6) financial struggles. The participants verbally confessed their child’s situation and the concerns they have for their child’s welfare. They stated the effects of the training both positively and negatively. Positive on the discipline and leadership skills, physical fitness, career opportunities, comradery, and sense of community. Negative on exposure to violence, physical injuries, and academic problems.
