Vitamin D in Type 2 Diabetes and Its Correlation With Heat Shock Protein 70, Ferric Reducing Ability of Plasma, Advanced Oxidation Protein Products and Advanced Glycation End Products.

To investigate the association between vitamin D3 level and oxidative stress biomarkers such as Heat Shock Protein 70 (HSP70), ferric reducing ability of plasma (FRAP), advanced oxidation protein products (AOPP) and advanced glycation end products (AGEs) in patients with Type 2 diabetes. In this cross-sectional study, 54 patients including 32 females and 22 males with a mean age of 54.92 ± 11.37 years with T2D attending the diabetes clinic from 2021 to 2022 were included. According to the average level of vitamin D in this population (14.91), they were divided into two groups with vitamin D ≤15 ng/mL and vitamin D >15 ng/mL. Multivariate regression analysis was conducted to evaluate the relationship between vitamin D and AOPP, HSP and FRAP parameters. The correlation between vitamin D and other variables was evaluated via the Pearson correlation test. Vitamin D level had a positive relation with FRAP (β = 0.32, p = 0.017) and HSP (β = 0.39, p = 0.003), but had a negative relation with AOPP (β = -0.30, p = 0.02). The level of 2hPP also had a negative relation with the level of vitamin D (β = -0.33, p = 0.03). There was not any relationship between the level of vitamin D and AGEs or other variables. After adjusting for multiple confounders for the multivariate regression model, HSP remained significant. This research indicates the relationship between vitamin D levels and oxidative stress biomarkers in patients with Type 2 diabetes.

Investigation of the Effectiveness of Doxycycline on the Improvement of Oxidative Stress Biomarkers in Patients with Ischemic Stroke

Background and Objective: Considering the role of oxidative stress in the pathogenesis of ischemic stroke, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory drugs can be a potential treatment in these patients. This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of doxycycline on the improvement of oxidative stress biomarkers in patients with ischemic stroke. Materials and Methods: This clinical trial study was performed on 48 patients with ischemic stroke who had referred to Besat Hospital in Hamadan, Iran, in 2023. They were randomly and equally assigned to the intervention (doxycycline at the rate of 100 mg every 12 hours) and placebo groups for one week. Before and after the intervention, serum levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), glutathione (GSH), total oxidant status, total antioxidant capacity, c-reactive protein (CRP), and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) were measured. Results: The study groups had no statistically significant difference in all measured biomarkers in the first 24 h after the stroke (P>0.05). In both study groups, the biomarkers of MDA and total oxidant status decreased after treatment. This decrease was greater in the intervention group, compared to the placebo group with a statistically significant difference. The total antioxidant capacity and GSH increased in both groups, and this increase was more significant in the intervention group, compared to the placebo group. In both groups, serum levels of CRP and ESR decreased, but no statistically significant difference was observed between the two groups. Conclusion: Addition of doxycycline to the standard treatment of ischemic stroke patients may reduce oxidative stress biomarkers; however, to confirm the results of this study, studies with a larger sample size are needed.

Effects of coenzyme Q10 supplementation on oxidative stress biomarkers following reperfusion in STEMI patients undergoing primary percutaneous coronary intervention.

It is well-established that oxidative stress is deeply involved in myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury. Considering the potent antioxidant properties of coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), we aimed to assess whether CoQ10 supplementation could exert beneficial effects on plasma levels of oxidative stress biomarkers in patients with ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) undergoing primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PPIC). Seventy patients with the first attack of STEMI, eligible for PPCI were randomly assigned to receive either standard treatments plus CoQ10 (400 mg before PPCI and 200 mg twice daily for three days after PPCI) or standard treatments plus placebo. Plasma levels of oxidative stress biomarkers, including superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), total antioxidant capacity (TAC), and malondialdehyde (MDA) were measured at 6, 24, and 72 hours after completion of PPCI. The changes in plasma levels of the studied biomarkers at 6 and 24 hours after PPCI were similar in the both groups (P values>0.05). This is while at 72 hours, the CoQ10- treated group exhibited significantly higher plasma levels of SOD (P value<0.001), CAT (P value=0.001), and TAC (P value<0.001), along with a lower plasma level of MDA (P value=0.002) compared to the placebo-treated group. The plasma activity of GPX showed no significant difference between the groups at all the study time points (P values>0.05). This study showed that CoQ10 has the potential to modulate the balance between antioxidant and oxidant biomarkers after reperfusion therapy. Our results suggest that CoQ10, through its antioxidant capacity, may help reduce the reperfusion injury in ischemic myocardium.

Does myo-inositol supplementation influence oxidative stress biomarkers in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease?

Myo-inositol (MI) is a carbocyclic sugar polyalcohol. MI has known to exert anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, and anti-diabetic activities. This study aimed to investigate the effects of MI supplementation on oxidative stress biomarkers in obese patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). In this double-blinded placebo-controlled randomized clinical trial, 51 newly diagnosed obese patients with NAFLD were randomly assigned to receive either MI (4 g/day) or placebo supplements accompanied by dietary recommendations for 8 weeks. Oxidative stress biomarkers, nutritional status, as well as liver enzymes and obesity indices were assessed pre- and post-intervention. A total of 48 patients completed the trial. Although anthropometric measures and obesity indices decreased significantly in both groups, the between-group differences adjusted for confounders were non-significant for these parameters, except for weight (p = .049); greater decrease was observed in the MI group. Iron and zinc intakes decreased significantly in both groups; however, between-group differences were non-significant at the end of the study. No significant between-group differences were revealed for other antioxidant micronutrients at the study endpoint. Sense of hunger, feeling to eat, desire to eat sweet and fatty foods reduced significantly in both groups (p < .05), while the feeling of satiety increased significantly in the placebo group (p = .002). No significant between-group differences were observed for these parameters, except for desire to eat fatty foods; a greater decrease was observed in the MI group (p = .034). Serum levels of glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) significantly increased in both study groups (p < .05); however, the between-group differences were non-significant at the end of the study. Furthermore, the between-group differences were non-significant for other oxidative stress biomarkers, except for serum nitric oxide (NO) level; a greater decrease was observed in the MI group. MI supplementation could significantly improve weight, desire to eat fatty foods, serum levels of NO, as well as the aspartate aminotransferase (AST)/ALT ratio.

Radon decay product particle radioactivity and oxidative stress biomarkers in patients with COPD

Radon decay products include α-radiation emitting radionuclides that attach to airborne particles that have potential to promote oxidative tissue damage after inhalation. To assess associations between α-particle radioactivity (α-PR) with urinary biomarkers of oxidative tissue damage, 140 patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) had up to four 1-week seasonal assessments (N = 413) of indoor (home) and ambient (central site) PM2.5 and black carbon (BC). Following environmental sampling, urine samples were analyzed for total and free malondialdehyde (MDA), biomarkers of lipid oxidation, and 8-hydroxyl-2′-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG), a biomarker of DNA oxidative damage. Particle radioactivity was measured as α-activity on PM2.5 filter samples. Linear mixed-effects regression models adjusted for urinary creatinine and other personal characteristics were used to assess associations. Indoor α-PR was associated with an increase in 8-OhdG (8.53%; 95% CI: 3.12, 14.23); total MDA (5.59%; 95% CI: 0.20, 11.71); and free MDA (2.17%; 95% CI: 2.75, 7.35) per interquartile range (IQR) of α-PR [median 1.25 mBq/m3; IQR 0.64], similar adjusting for PM2.5 or BC. The ratio of indoor/ambient α-PR was positively associated with each biomarker and associations with ambient α-PR were positive but weaker than with indoor concentrations. These findings are consistent with a contribution of radon decay products as measured by α-PR to oxidative stress in patients with COPD, with a greater contribution of indoor radon decay products.

The effect of the dietary approaches to stop hypertension diet on total antioxidant capacity, superoxide dismutase, catalase, and body composition in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease: a randomized controlled trial.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a condition characterized by the accumulation of fat in the liver without excessive alcohol consumption. Lifestyle modifications, such as adopting a healthy diet, represent the standard treatment for NAFLD. However, the impact of the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet on oxidative stress biomarkers in patients with NAFLD remains unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the effect of the DASH diet on total antioxidant capacity (TAC), catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD) levels, and body composition in overweight and obese patients with NAFLD. A total of 70 overweight and obese patients aged 1870 years were randomly assigned to either the intervention (DASH diet, n = 35) or the control group (control diet, n = 35) for 12 weeks, with both groups following a calorie-restricted diet. The mean age of participants was 43.1 ± 8.1 years in the DASH group and 45.1 ± 8.6 years in the control group. At the end of the study, a significant difference was observed in the mean TAC and SOD levels between the two groups (p = 0.02). After adjusting for potential confounding factors, such as age, sex, diabetes, smoking, physical activity, and baseline values, the DASH diet maintained its significant effects on TAC and SOD compared to the control diet (p = 0.03). However, there were no significant differences in CAT levels between the two groups. Moreover, a significant reduction in visceral fat (p = 0.01) and a marginally significant decrease in BMI (p = 0.06) were observed in the DASH group compared to the control group after adjusting for potential confounders. In conclusion, our study showed that following the DASH diet for 12 weeks in overweight and obese patients with NAFLD has beneficial effects on TAC, SOD, and visceral fat. Dietary total antioxidant capacity is associated with lower disease severity and inflammatory and oxidative stress biomarkers in patients with knee osteoarthritis

BackgroundThis study was designed to evaluate the association between dietary total antioxidant capacity and clinical and biochemical variables in patients with osteoarthritis.MethodsThis cross-sectional study was conducted among 160 patients with mild-to-moderate knee osteoarthritis. The Likert version of the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC Index) was used to assess the severity of clinical symptoms in patients with knee osteoarthritis. The secondary outcomes included inflammatory and oxidative stress biomarkers. The participants' usual diets were assessed using a food frequency questionnaire (FFQ), and the dietary total antioxidant capacity (TAC) was calculated based on the ferric reducing antioxidant power method. Additionally, clinical and biochemical variables were evaluated using standard methods.ResultsThe mean age of the participants was 57.2 ± 8.1 years, and 55.6% of them were females. The dietary TAC scores in this study ranged from 3.67 to 24.72, with a mean of 12.05 ± 5.3. We found a significant inverse trend between the dietary TAC score and the total Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis (WOMAC) score (P = 0.001), as well as the WOMAC stiffness (P = 0.008) and WOMAC physical function scores (P = 0.001). Furthermore, dietary TAC was inversely associated with serum concentrations of interleukin-6 (IL-6) (β = − 0.18, P = 0.020), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) (β = − 0.67, P < 0.001), matrix metalloproteinase-1 (MMP-1) (β = − 0.33, P < 0.001), and nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells (NF-κB) (β = − 0.22, P = 0.005) levels.ConclusionThe results of this study demonstrate an inverse association between dietary total antioxidant capacity and clinical and biochemical variables in patients with osteoarthritis.

Association of Serum Selenium and Selenoprotein P with Oxidative Stress Biomarkers in Patients with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrine disorder in women of reproductive age which is characterized by various reproductive and metabolic disorders. Oxidative stress (OS) is now recognized to be involved in the pathogenesis of PCOS which could be targeted in the management of PCOS-related complications. Selenium (Se), as an antioxidant trace element, has been shown to decrease in PCOS patients. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between the Se and selenoprotein P (SELENOP) levels with OS markers in women with PCOS. In this cross-sectional study, 125 females aged 18-45 years diagnosed with PCOS were included. Demographic, clinical, and lifestyle information of participants were obtained using the relevant questionnaires. Fasting blood samples were collected to measure biochemical parameters. Serum levels of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), total antioxidant capacity (TAC), erythrocyte superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), and catalase activities as well as anthropometric measurements were assessed across tertiles of serum concentrations of Se and SELENOP. Higher serum levels of Se were associated with higher serum TAC levels (β=0.42, P<0.001) and erythrocytes GPx activity (β=0.28, P=0.002) as well as with lower serum TBARS levels (β= -0.26, P=0.003). Similarly, higher serum levels of SELENOP were associated with higher TAC (β=0.32, P<0.001) and erythrocyte GPx activity (β=0.30, P=0.001). SELENOP also showed an inverse association with serum levels of TBARS (β= -0.40, P<0.001). Nevertheless, erythrocytes SOD and CAT activities showed no significant relationships with serum Se and SELENOP concentrations (all P>0.05). The present study found that serum Se and SELENOP levels were inversely associated with TBARS levels and positively associated with TAC levels and erythrocytes GPx activity.

Effect of milnacipran on brain‑derived neurotrophic factor and oxidative stress biomarkers in patients of major depressive disorder.

Emerging hypotheses in the pathophysiology of major depressive disorder (MDD) suggest important role of neurotrophic factors and oxidative stress. This study assessed the effect of milnacipran (a dual serotonin‑noradrenaline reuptake inhibitor) on brain‑derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and oxidative stress biomarkers i.e., malondialdehyde (MDA), glutathione‑s‑ transferase (GST) and glutathione reductase (GR) in patients of MDD. Thirty patients (aged 18 to 60 years) with MDD diagnosed by DSM‑IV criteria, with Hamilton Depression Rating scale (HAM‑D) score ≥ 14 were included in the study. Patients were given milnacipran in the doses of 50‑100 mg once daily. Patients were followed up for 12 weeks. HAM‑D score at the start of treatment was 17.8±1.7 which significantly reduced to 8.9±3.1 at 12 weeks of treatment. In responders, the plasma BDNF levels increased significantly at 12 weeks post treatment. There was no significant change in the pre‑ and post‑treatment values of oxidative stress parameters (MDA, GST and GR) after 12 week treatment. Milnacipran is effective and well tolerated in MDD patients, and its therapeutic response is associated with an increase in plasma BDNF levels. However, milnacipran did not affect oxidative stress biomarkers.

Comparative Analysis of the Pre- and Post-Medication Effects of Antipsychotic Agents on the Blood-Based Oxidative Stress Biomarkers in Patients with Schizophrenia: A Meta-Analysis.

Studies have shown that oxidative stress (OS) is related to the pathophysiology of schizophrenia (SCZ), but whether antipsychotics can induce OS has not been investigated well. Moreover, antipsychotics have differential effects on the OS level modulation, i.e., different types of antipsychotics have different effects on the cellular antioxidants or pro-oxidants. We followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines and investigated the OS indicators including both enzymatic and nonenzymatic markers, such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), malondialdehyde (MDA), glutathione (GSH), vitamin C, etc., of SCZ patients at baseline and follow-up of mono-medication. Twenty studies met the inclusion criteria, with a total of 1162 patients enrolled at baseline, and 1105 patients completed the follow-up. OS markers were changed after a period of antipsychotic treatment in SCZ patients. The GPx activity and MDA level decreased in the whole blood (P<0.05), also the serum MDA level decreased (P<0.05). For the first-episode SCZ patients, the activity of GPx and the level of MDA decreased, while the level of vitamin C increased (all P<0.05). The levels of MDA in patients receiving atypical antipsychotics decreased (P<0.05), while the level of GSH in patients with typical antipsychotics decreased (P=0.05). Antipsychotic medication may cause changes in the levels of OS markers in different blood samples of SCZ patients. However, the available studies might not be sufficient to reveal the underlying facts accurately due to the poor quality of experimental designs in the published literature.

The effects of phytosomal curcumin supplementation on clinical symptoms, and inflammatory and oxidative stress biomarkers in patients with migraine: A protocol for a randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trial.

Migraine is one of the most common diseases. Curcumin with anti-oxidative and anti-neuroinflammatory properties might have beneficial effects in migraine patients. This study will be conducted to evaluate the effects of a phytosomal preparation of curcumin on clinical signs, oxidative stress, and inflammatory parameters in patients with migraine. This is a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, clinical trial in which, 60 patients with migraine will be assigned to receive a daily dose of 250 mg of phytosomal curcumin for 8 weeks (intervention group) or 250 mg maltodextrin as a placebo for the same duration (control group). Before and after the study, frequency, duration, and severity of the attacks, quality of life and sleep, mood status, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), Nitric Oxide (NO), and oxidative stress factors will be measured. It seems that phytosomal formulation of curcumin (a solid dispersion preparation of curcumin with phosphatidylserine) with high bioavailability, can cross the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and result in decreased neuroinflammation, oxidative stress, and neurotoxicity. This way, phytosomal curcumin might lead to reduction of headaches and other complications of migraine and increase the quality of life of patients with migraine.

Oxidative Stress Biomarkers in Patients with End Stage Renal Disease

IntroductionCKD5 is the final stage of chronic kidney disease in which the patient has end‐stage renal disease (ESRD) and their kidneys are about to fail. One of the larger factors that contributes to the progression of renal failure is oxidative stress. Oxidative stress occurs when there’s an imbalance between free radicals and antioxidants in the body. DNA, proteins, and lipids can become damaged as a result of this imbalance. Stable derivatives of oxidants are used as biomarkers of oxidative stress. When renal damage occurs, likely due to oxidative stress, the levels of biomarkers will likely be more elevated in ESRD patients compared to control samples. L‐FABP is a cytoplasmic protein involved in facilitating and transporting long‐chain polyunsaturated fatty acids and is very significant in many research experiments related to CKD5. The purpose of this research project is to explore the relationship between oxidative stress biomarkers in ESRD patients and how the presence of ESRD contributes to the concentration of these biomarkers in patients. Hypothesis: The levels of oxidative stress biomarkers in ESRD patients will be elevated in comparison to the concentrations of them in control patients. Materials andMethodsBlood samples were collected from CKD‐5 patients and stored in sodium citrate tubes and centrifuged at 3000 rpm to separate the plasma. Normal human plasma (NHP) was obtained from a commercial vendor. The CKD‐5 and NHP were used to profile the biomarkers through ELISA kits. The statistical and correlation analysis was done through PRISM GraphPad software and IBM SPSS. Multiple statistical analysis tests were run to determine the correlation among the biomarkers and whether the data was statistically significant. Correlation analysis, Mann‐Whitney U tests, normal distribution, skewness tests, and quartile analysis tests were done through PRISM Graphpad Software and IBM SPSS.ResultsThe results are calculated in terms of group means. L‐FABP showed statistically significantly higher values in ESRD patients compared to control patients. L‐FABP was found to be 106599.4 pg/ml in ESRD v.s. 5116.33 pg/ml in NHP. PAI‐1a was found to elevated in ESRD (17.9 ng/ml) compared to NHP (10.47 ng/ml), while NO also showed higher values in ESRD (34.74 umol/L) compared to NHP (13.79 umol/L). There was a weak correlation between the biomarkers, but ESRD patients showed highly elevated levels of L‐FABP in comparison to NO and PAI‐1.ConclusionThese results suggest that impaired renal function and kidney damage contribute to the marked increase of L‐FABP in ESRD patients. Moreover, the increase in PAI‐1 and NO suggest the upregulation of oxidative stress and hemostatic deficit.

Oxidant and antioxidant status in patients with female pattern hair loss with varying severity

Background Female pattern hair loss (FPHL), also known as female androgenic alopecia, is a common dermatological disorder with a multifactorial pathogenesis. Oxidative status has been implicated in the pathogenesis of several skin diseases, including FPHL.Aim This study was aimed to investigate the levels of oxidative stress biomarkers in patients with FPHL with varying severities.Patients and methods The study involved 56 patients with FPHL and 46 healthy controls. Diagnosis was based on clinical examination and trichoscopic evaluation. Patients were grouped into three subgroups as follows: mild, moderate, and extensive. Oxidative stress was examined by measuring plasma levels of catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase, total antioxidant capacity, and malondialdehyde (MDA).Results Plasma levels of MDA in FPHL were significantly higher as compared with that of the controls, whereas activities of the antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase and CAT were lower. Moreover, total antioxidant capacity was also low in patients with FPHL as compared with that of the controls. Higher MDA levels in the extensive FPHL subgroup as compared with that of the mild and moderate subgroups were also observed. Furthermore, in the extensive FPHL subgroup, a significant negative correlation was observed between MDA and CAT levels.Conclusion The data suggest that oxidative stress plays a key role in FPHL progress, which accelerates hair loss by causing microinflammation and fibrosis. The recognition of the effect of androgens and associated factors on the hair follicle cycle is essential for the development of new and effective treatment methods and may be employed as a biomarker index to assess the disease’s activity and to monitor its treatment.

A Randomized Trial of Short-term Treatment with Folic Acid to Reduce the Oxidative Stress of Patients with Chronic Kidney Disease

Increased generation of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients leads to increased oxidative stress. The antioxidant capacity of folic acid has been shown to scavenge radicals efficiently. The current study was carried out to examine the effects of folic acid treatment on biochemical and oxidative stress biomarkers in patients in different stages of CKD. This was a randomized, non-blinded, clinical trial that assessed the effects of 3 months of treatment with 5 mg of folic acid daily or no treatment in 113 outpatients within CKD stages 3a and 3b. At the end of the intervention, we analyzed the data of 66 patients treated with folic acid and 47 in the control group. Serum homocysteine levels and biochemical and oxidative/nitrosative stress biomarkers were analyzed in all patients. In most patients, folic acid treatment normalized homocysteine levels and increased antioxidant enzyme activity (paraoxonase 1) and decreased sulfhydryl (SH) groups. In addition, oxidative biomarkers (products of nitric oxide and lipid hydroperoxide) were significantly lower post-treatment compared to baseline in the active intervention group. In the no active intervention group, no statistically significant effects were found on the oxidative and biochemical biomarkers. Folic acid treatment in stages 3a-4 CKD patients effectively ameliorated their hyperhomocysteinemia and increased the activity of antioxidant enzymes, as well as decreased the levels of pro-oxidant biomarkers in stage G3a and G3b CKD patients. Folic acid treatment attenuated oxidative/nitrosative stress and may be considered as a possible strategy to improve redox status and diminish the damages associated with oxidative/nitrosative stress in CKD patients. Beneficial Effects of Vitamin E Supplementation on Endothelial Dysfunction, Inflammation, and Oxidative Stress Biomarkers in Patients Receiving Hemodialysis: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials.

Inflammation and oxidative stress are closely related to cardiovascular complications and atherosclerosis, and have the potential to lead to an increase in death in patients receiving hemodialysis. Vitamin E has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to assess the effects of vitamin E supplementation on endothelial dysfunction, inflammation, and oxidative stress biomarkers in adult patients receiving hemodialysis. We searched the MEDLINE, EMBASE, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library databases and identified randomized controlled trials of adult patients receiving hemodialysis until 30 August 2021. A total of 11 trials with 491 randomized patients were included. The pooled data indicated that vitamin E supplementation significantly decreased intercellular adhesion molecule-1 [standardized mean difference (SMD): −1.35; 95% confidence interval (CI): −2.57, −0.13; p = 0.03, I2 = 89%], vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (SMD: −1.08; 95% CI: −2.05, −0.11; p = 0.03, I2 = 81%), C-reactive protein (SMD: −0.41; 95% CI: −0.75, −0.07; p = 0.02, I2 = 64%), and malondialdehyde (SMD: −0.76; 95% CI: −1.26, −0.25; p = 0.003, I2 = 77%) levels, but not interleukin-6 levels compared to those in the control group. Our results suggest that vitamin E supplementation may help alleviate oxidative stress and both vascular and systemic inflammation in patients receiving hemodialysis.

Oxidative stress and schizophrenia: A comparative cross‐sectional study of multiple oxidative markers in patients and their first‐degree relatives

Schizophrenia (SCZ) is a chronic, disruptive mental disorder with unknown pathogenic mechanisms. Several studies evidenced that oxidative stress (OS) may be one of the causal factors to play a role in the pathophysiology of the disease. Our study aims to contribute to the SCZ research by investigating a possible relationship between the severity of illness (scored with "The Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale [PANSS]") and OS biomarkers in patients. We additionally assess the "first-degree-relatives (FDRs)" oxidative status with multiple parameters to test the idea of oxidative imbalance leads to disease progression as a genetical susceptibility factor. This study included: 50 adult patients with SCZ, 50 unaffected FDRs, and 50 controls. OS biomarkers included myeloperoxidase (MPO), total oxidant status (TOS), total antioxidant status (TAS), total thiol (TT), native thiol (NT). Photometric methods were used to measure the parameters in the peripheral blood samples of participants. Disulphide (DS) and oxidative stress index (OSI) parameters were calculated. TOS, DS, OSI levels were significantly higher, and TAS, TT, NT levels were significantly lower in both SCZ and FDRs than controls. In the SCZ group, MPO activity was significantly higher compared with other groups. Results in this study did not provide a strong correlation between the PANSS and selected biomarkers. There was a slightly negative correlation between TT and PANSS in the SCZ group (P=.041, r=-.297). OS biomarkers increased significantly in the peripheral blood of SCZ patients compared with other groups indicates the presence of OS in the aetiology of the disease. Mid-levels of oxidative markers found in FDRs imply that unaffected first-degree relatives have an increased risk for turning up to the clinical presentation stage.

Systemic oxidative stress biomarkers in patients with vitreomacular traction syndrome.

To evaluate whether the systemic oxidative stress biomarkers increased in patients with vitreomacular traction syndrome (VMT). This study compared 25 patients diagnosed with VMT with 20 healthy controls. As a biomarker of systemic oxidative stress, malondialdehyde (MDA) was measured. Total oxidant status (TOS) and total antioxidant status (TAS) were measured to evaluate the systemic oxidant status. Serum MDA values were significantly higher among the patients (p < 0.001). The ideal cut-off value for MDA was determined to be 22.1µmol/L, with 80% sensitivity and 75% specificity. The between-group differences were not statistically significant for TOS or TAS (p = 0.326 and p = 0.698, respectively). Increased MDA levels suggest that systemic oxidative stress may play a role in VMT.

Advanced glycation end products predict long-term outcome of catheter ablation in paroxysmal atrial fibrillation.

Oxidative stress is an important contributor to the etiology of atrial fibrillation (AF). Our aim was to study oxidative stress biomarkers in patients undergoing pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) for paroxysmal AF with radiofrequency catheter ablation and to assess its prognostic value in predicting long-term PVI outcome. In this prospective cohort study, we included 62 patients (mean age 55±8 years, 12 females and 50 males) with paroxysmal AF and implanted ECG loop recorders who underwent PVI. Plasmatic concentrations of advanced glycation end-products (AGEs), fructosamine, advanced oxidation protein products, and thiobarbituric-acid reacting substances were measured before PVI. AF burden (percentage of time spent in AF) was continually assessed during the follow-up period (1063±271 days). Nineteen patients (31%) were defined as optimal responders (oR) with AF burden < 0.5% after PVI. Remaining 43 patients (69%) were defined as sub-optimal responders. Concentration of AGEs was significantly lower in oR by 3.7 g/g (CI: -6.5 to -1.7; P=0.0003). After adjustment for age, sex, BMI, left atrial size, arterial hypertension, and AF burden before PVI, only low concentration of AGEs remained significantly associated with oR (odds ratio: 1.3; P=0.04). AGEs concentration achieved area under the curve of 0.78 for predicting optimal long-term PVI response. AGEs concentration before PVI was associated with long-term PVI outcome in patients with paroxysmal AF. Further research will show if this biomarker could contribute to optimal patient selection for catheter ablation.
