The oxidation of aromatic aldehydes by magnesium monoperoxyphthalate and urea–hydrogen peroxide

Abstract Magnesium monoperoxyphthalate and urea–hydrogen peroxide–acetic anhydride are effective reagents in the oxidation of benzaldehyde to benzoic acid and o- and p-methoxybenzaldehyde to the corresponding phenols. On the other hand, aromatic aldehydes, including the isomeric methoxybenzaldehydes, are oxidised to the corresponding benzoic acid derivatives in good to excellent yields by the hydroperoxide anion generated from urea–hydrogen peroxide.

Bromate Exchange Resin as an Oxidizing Agent in Organic Synthesis

Bromate exchange resin has been prepared by a simple elution technique and used for the oxidation of aromatic aldehydes to the carboxylic acids. Oxidation is carried out under biphasic condition. Work up is simple. Resin immobilized bromate ions have been used for the first time as an oxidizing agent in organic synthesis.

Oxidation of aromatic aldehydes in the ionic liquid [bmim]PF 6

Several aromatic aldehydes have been oxidised using the catalyst [Ni(acac)2] and dioxygen at atmospheric pressure, as the oxidant, in the ionic liquid [bmim]PF6. The catalyst and ionic liquid could be recycled after extraction of the carboxylic acid product.

Oxidation of aromatic aldehyde to aromatic carboxylic acid by Burkholderia cepacia TM1 isolated from humus

Burkholderia cepacia TM1 isolated from humus was able to oxidize aromatic aldehydes to the corresponding aromatic carboxylic acids with an extreme by high yield in distilled water containing only the aromatic aldehyde as the substrate. The molar yields of vanillic acid from vanillin, p-hydroxybenzoic acid from p-hydroxybenzaldehyde, and syringic acid from syringaldehyde were approximately 94%, 92% and 72%, respectively. Until the added aromatic aldehyde was significantly consumed, consumption of the produced acid hardly occurred. The findings of this study indicate that an appropriate reactor residence time for continuous production can be set, and that aromatic carboxylic acid can be produced efficiently and continuously from the corresponding aldehyde.

Sodium hypochlorite as oxidant in phase transfer catalytic systems: Part I. Oxidation of aromatic aldehydes

Aromatic aldehydes were oxidized to carboxylic acids in high yields and selectivity under mild conditions. The reactions were performed using aqueous sodium hypochlorite as oxidant in a liquid-liquid phase transfer catalytic system using quaternary ammonium salts as catalysts. The reaction was strongly pH-dependent, with maximum reaction rates at pH 9–11. Similarly, extraction of the hypochlorite ion was maximal at these pHs. The maxima are attributed to coextraction of hypochlorous acid together with the hypochlorite anion into the organic phase, the former significantly increasing the reaction rate.

Kinetics and mechanism of oxidation of aromatic aldehydes by vanadium(V) in perchloric acid medium

The oxidation kinetics of benzaldehyde and its substituted derivatives by vanadium(V) have been studied in perchloric acid medium. The reaction is first order in both [vanadium(V)] and [H+] whereas the order with respect to [substrate] is less than unity. The kinetic and spectrophotometric results indicate the formation of an intermediate 1 : 1 complex between the reactive vanadium(V) species and hydrated benzaldehyde prior to electron transfer. Thermodynamic parameters associated with the intermediate complex and activation parameters for the slow step have been evaluated. The reaction is found to have a significant deuterium isotope effect. A mechanism consistent with the experimental observations is proposed.

ChemInform Abstract: Unusual Catalytic Properties of Usual Enzymes

The major objective of this paper is to stress that enzymes, in addition to their “normal” reactions (reflected in their names), often can catalyze other, sometimes quite different processes. The latter, although unimportant for the enzyme-producing organism, can be very valuable for biotechnological applications. The considered examples of “unnatural” catalytic activities of common enzymes, taken from the author’s recent studies include: (I) reduction of aromatic compounds catalyzed by glucose oxidase; (II) prochiral and enantiomeric stereo-specificity of galactose oxidase in the oxidation of non-sugar, three carbon alcohols; (III) selective hydroxylation of aromatic compounds catalyzed by peroxidase; (IV) geometrically and positionally specific oxidation of aromatic aldehydes catalyzed by xanthine oxidase.

Oxidation of alcohols and aldehydes in KOH-dimethoxyethane-O2 systems

Oxidation of aromatic aldehydes and aliphatic secondary alcohols by Hyphomicrobium spp.

Two of six tested strains of Hyphomicrobium respired on benzaldehyde with higher rates than on formaldehyde, and three strains with equal or lower rates, whereas one strain, Hyphomicrobium X, showed almost negligible respiration on benzaldehyde. Various substituted benzaldehydes stimulated oxygen consumption to lower rates than benzaldehyde itself in active strains. All strains contained multiple forms of dye-linked aldehyde dehydrogenase, as evident from polyacrylamide gel electropherograms of cell-free extracts and activity tests on the gels with nitroblue tetrazolium. All bands of this enzyme reacted more strongly with benzaldehyde than with formaldehyde in all strains. On gels of some strains additional bands appeared with benzaldehyde as the enzyme substrate. Hyphomicrobium X again displayed the lowest activity of this enzyme on the gels. A new band of this enzyme appeared on gels of strain ZV 580 after growth on methylamine, when tested in this respect. NAD-dependent secondary alcohol dehydrogenase was present on gels of three strains, which respired on 2-propanol.Difference spectra and observation of the degree of reduction of ubiquinone and cytochromes b and c of two strains indicated that the electrons from benzaldehyde oxidation were transferred to cytochrome c.The results are discussed with regard to the significance of dye-linked aldehyde dehydrogenases with broad substrate specificity for the catabolism and oligocarbophilic growth of Hyphomicrobium and the taxonomic relevance of the aldehyde dehydrogenase pattern observed on polyacrylamide gel electropherograms.

Kinetics and mechanism of the oxidation of aromatic aldehydes with bromine

The kinetics of the oxidation of benzaldehyde to benzoic acid with bromine have been investigated in buffers of pH 1–5 and in aqueous acetic acid. The substituents of ten substituted benzaldehydes have little effect on the rate of oxidation and there is a poor Hammett correlation. Benzaldehyde is oxidised 2·5 times faster than [2H1]-benzaldehyde at 70°. There is little difference of solvent isotope effect in the oxidation of benzaldehyde and acetaldehyde measured in normal water and deuterium oxide, contrary to the findings of other authors. The evidence presented is in favour of a similar mechanism for the oxidation of both aliphatic and aromatic aldehydes.
