Schizotypy, affective temperaments and anhedonia in bipolar depression.

"Schizotypy" is a term describing personality traits reflected in emotional, perceptual and cognitive styles. Affective temperaments are trait-like features which were observed to be stable in time and predispose to mood disorders. The purpose of this study was to examine relationship between schizotypal features, affective temperaments and anhedonia in patients with bipolar depression. 54 patients with bipolar depression were included in the study. Participant were administered the following psychometric tools: Dimensional Anhedonia Rating Scale (DARS), Snaith-Hamilton Pleasure Scale (SHAPS), Oxford-Liverpool Inventory of Feelings and Experiences (O-LIFE), Temperament Evaluation of Memphis, Pisa, Paris, and San Diego Autoquestionnaire (TEMPS-A), and Quick Inventory of Depressive Symptomatology - Self-Report (QIDS-SR). Correlations between the variables were calculated and linear regression models were built. Only hyperthymia (affective temperament) and introvertive anhedonia (schizotypal domain) were statistically significantly correlated with anhedonia. In regression models, introvertive anhedonia predicted higher whereas hyperthymic features lower severity of anhedonia (measured by the SHAPS scale). Hyperthymic features are protective and introvertive anhedonia is a risk factor for consummatory anhedonia.

Positive schizotypy and Motor Impulsivity correlate with response aberrations in ventral attention network during inhibitory control

Inhibitory control (IC) aberrations are present in various psychopathologies, including schizophrenia spectrum and personality disorders, especially in association with antisocial or violent behaviour.We investigated behavioural and neural associations between IC and psychopathology-related traits of schizotypy [Oxford-Liverpool Inventory of Feelings and Experiences (O-LIFE)], psychopathy [Triarchic Psychopathy Measure (TriPM)], and impulsivity [Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (BIS-11)], using a novel Go/No-Go Task (GNG) featuring human avatars in 78 healthy adults (25 males, 53 females; mean age = 25.96 years, SD = 9.85) and whole-brain functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in a separate sample of 22 right-handed healthy individuals (7 males, 15 females; mean age = 24.13 years, SD = 5.40).Behaviourally, O-LIFE Impulsive Nonconformity (impulsive, anti-social, and eccentric behaviour) significantly predicted 16 % of variance in false alarms (FAs). O-LIFE Unusual Experiences (positive schizotypy) and BIS-11 Motor Impulsivity predicted 15 % of d prime (d’) (sensitivity index) for the fastest (400 ms) GNG trials. When examined using fMRI, higher BIS-11 Motor Impulsivity uniquely, and also together with Unusual Experiences, was associated with lower activity in the left lingual gyrus during successful inhibition (correct No-Go over baseline). Additionally, higher Impulsive Nonconformity was associated with lower activity in the caudate nucleus and anterior cingulate during No-Go compared to Go stimuli reactions.Positive schizotypy, motor, and antisocial-schizotypal impulsivity correlate with some common but mostly distinct neural activation patterns during response inhibition in areas within or associated with the ventral attention network.

Interoceptive and Affective Alterations in Body Integrity Dysphoria: An Online Self-Reporting Study

Introduction: Body integrity dysphoria (BID) is a rare condition in which individuals experience a long-lasting desire to achieve a specific physical disability. In this study, we tested the hypothesis of interoceptive and affective abnormalities in BID, in line with the evidence of structural and functional alteration of the interoceptive-affective neural system in these individuals. Method: Our study involved 68 participants with BID (mean age: 35.6, SD: 16.4). Among these participants, 47 expressed a desire for amputation, 14 desired paralysis, 3 sought sensory deprivation, and 3 desired a combination of these forms. For comparisons, we recruited a control group of 79 participants (mean age: 35.2, SD: 15.8). We administered assessment measures to investigate alexithymia level (TAS-20), disgust sensitivity (DS-R), interoceptive awareness (MAIA-2), and (affective and cognitive) empathy (QCAE). We also administered the Short Oxford-Liverpool Inventory of Feelings and Experiences (O-LIFE) to identify psychiatric comorbidities. Subgroups with low O-LIFE scores (BID = 31; controls = 43) and subgroups with high O-LIFE scores (BID = 37; controls = 36) were derived through a median-split procedure. Results: Within the BID low O-LIFE group, we found reduced interoceptive sensibility, reduced disgust sensitivity, and increased difficulty in identifying feelings, which refers to a dimension of the alexithymia trait. Within the BID high O-LIFE group, we observed a reduced disgust sensitivity and interoceptive sensibility, accompanied by a diminished score in cognitive empathy. Conclusion: Our study suggests that BID can be associated with altered interoceptive and affective processing.

Schizotypy dimensions do not predict overshadowing

When two cues are presented together and reliably predict an outcome (AB-O1) an “overshadowing” effect is typically observed. That is, the relationship between these cues and the outcome is learned about less well than a cue presented on its own with an outcome (e.g., C – O1). The current study sought to explore the relationship between overshadowing and the positive and negative dimensions of schizotypy. A total of 256 participants completed an overshadowing procedure embedded within a causal judgement task and the Short Oxford-Liverpool Inventory of Feelings and Experiences (O-LIFE) which measured the different dimensions of schizotypy. A unilateral overshadowing effect was observed, however, none of the dimensions of schizotypy predicted the magnitude of this effect. These results are the first to demonstrate this finding using an appropriately powered sample and reveal that a tendency to experience symptoms of schizophrenia does not impact upon the overshadowing effect.

Non-dynamism and temporal disturbances

Philosophical accounts denying that temporal passage is an objective feature of reality face an explanatory challenge with respect to why it appears to us as though time passes. Recently, two solutions have surfaced. Cognitive illusionism claims that people experience the passage of time due to their belief that time passes. Cognitive error theory claims that we do not experience the passage of time, but hold the belief that we do, which we have acquired through making an inference from the prior belief that time passes. These approaches suppose that belief and passage experience are explanatorily connected, and they depend on the claims that people who experience the passage of time or at least believe that they do also believe that time passes. To test these claims, we probed the beliefs of populations of individuals with depression and schizotypy, thus conditions that are strongly associated with alterations in temporal phenomenology. Depression was assessed with the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and schizotypy with the short Oxford-Liverpool Inventory of Feelings and Experiences (O-LIFE). While cognitive illusionism and inferentialist cognitive error theory would predict a strong association between BDI and O-LIFE scores and beliefs about time passage, our study found no such association. The experience of passage does not seem to be explanatorily connected to beliefs about the passage of time.

No influence of sex on the relationship between schizotypy factors and executive control across the schizophrenia spectrum

Sex differences in symptoms and executive control across schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSD) are consistently reported. Similarly, these findings of sex differences are also observed in schizotypy, that is, schizophrenia-like features occurring in healthy individuals in the absence of a clinical diagnosis. This study aimed to examine the relationships between performance on three major domains of executive control: performance monitoring, response inhibition, and cognitive set-shifting, and schizotypy factor scores in both SSD patients and healthy controls (HCs), and whether sex moderated any relationships observed. A total of 111 (67 males and 44 females) patients with SSD and 258 (129 males and 129 females) HCs were included in this study. Schizotypal personality traits (in both SSD and HC) was assessed using the Oxford-Liverpool Inventory of Feelings and Experiences (O-LIFE). Executive control performance was assessed using seven tasks. Stepwise linear regressions revealed that performance on cognitive set-shifting tasks was significantly associated with the introvertive anhedonia, cognitive disorganisation, and unusual experiences subscales of the O-LIFE. When sex was examined as a moderator, it was not a significant moderator of any of the relationships between cognitive set-shifting tasks and schizotypy factors. The results suggest that independent of sex, cognitive set-shifting ability is associated to an increased vulnerability to schizotypal personality traits, although performance monitoring and response inhibition did not.

A dimensional measure of schizotypy: cross-cultural adaptation and validation of the Oxford-Liverpool Inventory of Feelings and Experiences short version for Brazilian Portuguese (O-LIFE-S).

Introduction The Oxford-Liverpool Inventory of Feelings and Experiences (O-LIFE) is a widely-used scale, and the first to include a dimensional approach to understanding schizotypy.Objective To adapt the short version of the O-LIFE (O-LIFE-S) into Brazilian Portuguese.Method a) Two independent bilingual professionals translated the original instrument into Brazilian Portuguese; b) a third bilingual professional summarized the two translations; c) a fourth bilingual expert translated the Portuguese version back into English; d) this back-translation was adjusted by a committee of psychology experts; e) a pilot study was conducted with 10 participants from the general population.Results O-LIFE-S was considered ready to be used in a formal validation study in Brazil.Conclusion The scale appears to cover the dimensional approach to schizotypy. However, a future validation study needs to be conducted to determine the internal consistency and reliability of the Brazilian Portuguese version of the O-LIFE-S .

S61. COMPUTATIONAL MODELLING OF VISUAL MOTION PERCEPTION AND ITS ASSOCIATION WITH SCHIZOTYPAL TRAITS

BackgroundPsychotic symptoms might be explained by disturbances of information processing due to errors of inference during neural coding, and hierarchical models could advance our understanding of how impaired functioning at different levels of the processing hierarchy are associated with psychotic symptoms. However, in order to examine to what extent such alterations are temporary or stable, the psychometric reliability and validity of the measurements need to be established. Individual differences in visual perception were measured by responses to uncertain stimuli presented during a probabilistic associative learning task. Our novel contributions are the measurement of cross-modal (visual and acoustic) associative learning and the assessment of the psychometric properties of indicators derived from a perceptual decision task: we evaluate its internal consistency, test-retest reliability and external validity as shown by associations with schizotypal traits.MethodsParticipants (32 healthy individuals, 13 men, age (SD) = 27.4 (9.4)) performed a perceptual decision task twice with one week delay. They were asked to indicate the direction of perceived motion of disambiguous and ambiguous visual stimuli (640 trials), which were preceded by visual and acoustic cues that were probabilistically associated with the motion direction and were congruent (both predict the same motion) or incongruent (cues predict different motion). Schizotypal traits were measured with the short version of the Oxford-Liverpool Inventory of Feelings and Experiences (O-LIFE) questionnaire, which showed good internal consistency and test-retest reliability (Cronbach’s alpha: 0.71 – 0.83 for subscales, test-retest correlation for Cognitive Disorganization: r = 0.84, and Unusual Experiences: r = 0.79).ResultsWe found a significant difference in response reaction times between stimuli with high and low probability (t = -2.037; p = 0.044). Acoustic cues predicted the decision significantly higher in case of ambiguous stimuli in both sessions (1. t=4.19, p<0.001; 2: t=3.46, p=0.002). Congruency of visual and acoustic cue pairs had no significant effect on response times for ambiguous stimuli. Reaction times and bias towards reliance on auditory cues during perceptual decision making under uncertainty showed stability over the two sessions (test-retest rho’s ranging from 0.56 – 0.72). Cognitive Disorganization scores showed weak negative correlation with response time under uncertainty (session 1: r= -0.24, session 2: r= -0.28), Unusual Experiences scores showed weak negative correlation with the bias towards reliance on auditory cues (session1: r= -0.21, session 2: r= -0.19). We did not find relationship between general response speed and any O-LIFE subscale scores.DiscussionThe results show some intraindividual stability of individual differences in perceptual decision making as measured by our paradigm. Participants with higher schiztypal scores tend to have slower response speed under uncertainty and greater bias towards reliance on auditory cues in a small healthy sample which implies it might be useful to measure these variables in clinical population and evaluate the effectiveness of therapeutic interventions or illness progression in follow-up studies.The presented preliminary results derived from descriptive statistics of the behavioral data. Our research group is currently working on fitting a trial-by-trial hierarchical computational model - which includes the representation of uncertainty - to find more detailed individual differences, e.g. the time course of parameter changes while learning in a visual perception task.

Schizotypy and Risk-Taking Behaviour: the Contribution of Urgency

The Oxford-Liverpool Inventory of Feelings and Experiences (O-LIFE) defines schizotypy as a multidimensional psychopathology construct comprising Unusual Experiences, Cognitive Disorganisation, Impulsive Nonconformity, and Introvertive Anhedonia. Previous research indicates that schizotypy is associated with various risky behaviours. Urgency (emotional impulsivity) has a unique and clinically important effect on risk-taking. However, the interplay between schizotypy and urgency in relation to risk-taking has not received adequate consideration. A sample of 204 participants completed self-report scales measuring Schizotypy, Urgency and Risk-taking behaviour. Using structural equation modelling, a mediational model tested the degree to which O-LIFE subfactors directly and indirectly (via urgency) predicted self-reported likelihood to engage in Risk-taking behaviour. Results indicated that Cognitive Disorganisation and Introvertive Anhedonia negatively predicted engagement in Risk-taking behaviour, whereas Impulsive Nonconformity positively predicted engagement in Risk-taking behaviour. Unusual Experiences, Cognitive Disorganisation and Impulsive Nonconformity had indirect effects on Risk-taking through Urgency. Inclusion of Urgency added explanatory power to the schizotypy-risk relationship.

Multi-echo fMRI, resting-state connectivity, and high psychometric schizotypy.

Disrupted striatal functional connectivity is proposed to play a critical role in the development of psychotic symptoms. Previous resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) studies typically reported disrupted striatal connectivity in patients with psychosis and in individuals at clinical and genetic high risk of the disorder relative to healthy controls. This has not been widely studied in healthy individuals with subclinical psychotic-like experiences (schizotypy). Here we applied the emerging technology of multi-echo rs-fMRI to examine corticostriatal connectivity in this group, which is thought to drastically maximize physiological noise removal and increase BOLD contrast-to-noise ratio. Multi-echo rs-fMRI data (echo times, 12, 28, 44, 60 ms) were acquired from healthy individuals with low (LS, n = 20) and high (HS, n = 19) positive schizotypy as determined with the Oxford-Liverpool Inventory of Feelings and Experiences (O-LIFE). After preprocessing to ensure optimal contrast and removal of non-BOLD signal components, whole-brain functional connectivity from six striatal seeds was compared between the HS and LS groups. Effects were considered significant at cluster-level p < .05 family-wise error correction. Compared to LS, HS subjects showed lower rs-fMRI connectivity between ventromedial prefrontal regions and ventral striatal regions. Lower connectivity was also observed between the dorsal putamen and the hippocampus, occipital regions, as well as the cerebellum. These results demonstrate that subclinical positive psychotic-like experiences in healthy individuals are associated with striatal hypoconnectivity as detected using multi-echo rs-fMRI. Further application of this approach may aid in characterizing functional connectivity abnormalities across the extended psychosis phenotype.

T18. MULTIVARIATE BRAIN ANATOMICAL DIFFERENCES IN POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE SCHIZOTYPY: PRELIMINARY RESULTS FROM THE TYPIA STUDY

BackgroundIn schizotypy, a factor structure similar to the one observed in schizophrenia has been unraveled, being the positive and negative the most consistently replicated dimensions. Despite this fact, most of the studies on brain volume patterns in schizotypy consider it as an unitary rather than a multidimensional construct. Hence, based on previous results showing that schizophrenia and schizotypal personality traits share common neurodevelopmental patterns, it is hypothesized that brain volumetric patterns in individuals with high positive schizotypy are intrinsically different to those observed in persons reporting high negative schizotypy and to individuals with overall low schizotypal traits. The present study aims to evaluate this hypothesis using novel machine learning techniques to address the multivariate nature of psychotic diseases and the brain itself.MethodsData from the TYPIA Study, an ongoing project conducted at the Ludwig-Maximilian University of Munich and the University of Bonn in Germany, was used to investigate whether brain volumetric patterns are distinct in healthy individuals with high positive (HPS) and high negative schizotypy (HNS) when compared to one another (HPS vs HNS) and to individuals with self-reported low schizotypy (LS vs HNS and LS vs HPS). A preliminary analysis on grey matter volumetric patterns from 29 LS (19 f., mean age: 24.6 y.), 28 HNS (20 f., mean age: 26.8 y.) and 23 HPS (17 f., mean age: 26.4 years) individuals from the general population without any current psychiatric diagnosis was performed. Group divisions were based on the introvertive anhedonia and unusual experiences subscales from the Oxford-Liverpool Inventory of Feelings and Experiences (O-LIFE). Structural images were preprocessed with a standard voxel based morphometry pipeline using the SPM-based CAT12 toolbox in Matlab. After age, sex and grey matter intracranial volume and center corrections, a linear support vector classification (SVC) algorithm was used to assess separability between the groups.ResultsOur preliminary cross-validated results showed that LS and HNS can be separated with 56.0 % balanced accuracy (BAC), whereas LS vs HPS and HNS vs HPS allowed for only 42.87% and 48.8% BAC respectively. Interestingly, a post-hoc analysis comparing LS vs both high schizotypy groups merged together showed the highest BAC (59.2%). As expected, the brain differences between groups are rather small, since the sample consists fully of healthy controls. However, these results indicate that personality traits related to HNS are linked to more pronounced changes in the brain as compared to HPS. Nevertheless, schizotypy as a combination of the positive and negative dimensions allowed for a higher classification accuracy when compared to LS, supporting the notion of schizotypy as a unitary construct as observed from the post-hoc analysis. Furthermore, HNS and HPS were not separable by the algorithm, most likely due to the intrinsic heterogeneity of the construct.DiscussionOur results align with previous studies claiming that negative symptoms are associated with structural changes in the CNS whereas positive symptoms relate to changes in functioning and activation of the brain. A larger sample as well as using other data modalities will confirm the stability of our findings. Research on volumetric patterns of the brain areas related to negative symptoms in non-clinical samples might lead to a better understanding of the underlying causes of schizophrenia. Above all, our results show that investigating non-clinical expression of psychosis-like symptoms is a promising strategy to understand the prodromal stadium of schizophrenia.

T61. ANTISACCADE AND MEMORY GUIDED SACCADE PERFORMANCE ACROSS THE SCHIZOPHRENIA CONTINUUM

BackgroundSaccadic (ocular motor) deficits are one of the most replicated findings in schizophrenia. However, less research has been conducted investigating the broader schizophrenia continuum. Recent research suggests that the personality characteristics and symptoms observed in schizophrenia lie on a continuum with subclinical symptoms, known as schizotypy, observed in the non-clinical population. Schizotypy is considered a suitable model for investigating schizophrenia as it mirrors the symptoms, albeit in a more subtle manner. As saccadic deficits are a cognitive hallmark of schizophrenia, it is believed that saccadic deficit may be associated with higher schizotypy. The aim of the current study was to 1) replicate previous findings of impairments in antisaccade and memory-guided saccade performance in schizophrenia and 2) investigate the relationship between antisaccade and memory-guided saccade performance and schizotypy.Methods105 adults (35 patients with schizophrenia/schizoaffective disorder and 70 healthy controls) completed the antisaccade and memory-guided saccade tasks, which engage spatial working memory and inhibition processes. The variables analysed for both saccade paradigms were error rate, latency (ie. reaction time) and gain (ie. spatial accuracy). Schizotypy was assessed using the Oxford-Liverpool Inventory of Feelings and Experiences (O-LIFE), a 104 item questionnaire which measures the three main schizotypy factors: Unusual Experiences, Introvertive Anhedonia and Cognitive Disorganisation. A total O-LIFE score was also calculated from these three schizotypy factors as a representation of global schizotypy. Controls were then divided into low (n = 35) and high schizotypy groups (n = 35). A MANOVA was conducted to observe differences in eye movement variables between low schizotypy individuals, high schizotypy individuals and patients. Correlations were also conducted to further investigate these relationships.ResultsAntisaccade error rate, (p < 0.001), antisaccade latency (p = 0.007), memory-guided saccade error rate (p = 0.009) and latency (p < 0.001) were significantly different between patients and controls. When comparing low schizotypy, high schizotypy and patient groups, the MANOVA revealed significant differences for antisaccade and memory-guided saccade latency and a non-significant trend for antisaccade gain. However, post-hoc analyses revealed that there was only a significant difference between low schizotypy and patient groups (p < 0.001), but not between low schizotypy and high schizotypy nor between high schizotypy and patient. Looking across the schizophrenia continuum, there were significant correlations between the total O-LIFE score and antisaccade gain (p = 0.033), memory-guided saccade latency (p = 0.014) and memory-guided saccade gain (p = 0.011). A non-significant trend was also observed between the total O-LIFE score and antisaccade latency (p = 0.088).DiscussionThis study replicated previous findings of impaired saccade performance in schizophrenia. In addition, it also replicated findings of impaired antisaccade performance in higher schizotypy and is the first study to investigate and demonstrate the relationship between higher schizotypy and impaired memory-guided saccade performance. Overall, these findings supporting the use of schizotypy as a model for schizophrenia and also support the theory of schizotypy and a broader schizophrenia continuum.

Nasilenie osobowościowych przejawów schizotypii wśród osób zdrowych a wartościowanie siebie i świata w kontekście zdrowia psychicznego. Próba walidacji skróconej skali schizotypii Oxford–Liverpool Inventory of Feelings and Experiences w warunkach polskich

Wstęp: Przedmiotem badania były przejawy schizotypii – rozumiane jako cechy osobowości ludzi zdrowych – oraz ich związek z samooceną i pozytywnym nastawieniem do życia. Celem praktycznym była próba walidacji skróconej skali schizotypii Oxford–Liverpool Inventory of Feelings and Experiences (O-LIFE).Materiały i metody: W badaniu kwestionariuszowym na grupie 70 kobiet i mężczyzn wykorzystano przetłumaczoną z języka angielskiego skróconą wersję O-LIFE. W uprzednim badaniu pilotażowym (n = 202) na zdrowych osobach w wieku 19–88 lat analiza rzetelności wykazała bardzo satysfakcjonującą dokładność pomiaru ogólnej skali schizotypii (α = 0,82) oraz wahającą się od niskiej po wysoką rzetelność wyników czynnikowych. Badania nad adaptacją skali O-LIFE do warunków populacji polskiej obecnie kontynuowane są w Katedrze Psychiatrii Pomorskiego Uniwersytetu Medycznego w Szczecinie.Wyniki: Wykazano ujemne związki pomiędzy samooceną i orientacją pozytywną a wszystkimi miarami cech schizotypowych, zwłaszcza w odniesieniu do wyniku ogólnego (r = −0,518) oraz do wymiaru dezorganizacji poznawczej (r = −0,531). Niższe poczucie własnej wartości i negatywne nastawienie do otoczenia współwystępowały z większym nasileniem osobowościowych przejawów schizotypii, które w sytuacji psychicznego przeciążenia mogą predysponować do rozwinięcia schizotypowych zaburzeń osobowości czy schizofrenii.Wnioski: Mieszczące się w granicach zdrowia psychicznego przejawy cech schizotypowych powiązane są z obniżoną samooceną, większym pesymizmem i niższą oceną zadowolenia z życia. Obniżając poczucie dobrostanu psychofizycznego, stanowią czynnik ryzyka różnych problemów psychicznych, zwłaszcza z kręgu psychoz. Dodatkowo wskazano na użyteczność polskojęzycznej wersji skróconej skali O-LIFE, zwłaszcza w badaniach ilościowych, i nakreślono dalsze możliwości badań.

Self-Directedness Predicts Quality of Life in Individuals with Psychotic Experiences: A 1-Year Follow-Up Study

There is a high prevalence of psychotic-like experiences in nonclinical patient cohorts from Brazil. This study aimed to test whether personality dimensions, as well as schizotypy, are important predictors of quality of life (QoL) in individuals with psychotic experiences (PE). Method: 115 participants were recruited from Spiritist Centers in Brazil. At the 1-year follow up, 90 participants (78%) were reassessed. Instruments were the SCID-I (Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV), TCI-R 140 (Revised Temperament and Character Inventory), OLIFE-R (Oxford-Liverpool Inventory of Feelings and Experiences), and WHOQOL-BREF (World Health Organization QoL Instrument). Results: Mean age (±SD) was 36.8 (±12.5) years; 70% were female. Participants reported 74.4% of PE at time 1 and 72.3% at time 2. At time 1, temperament and character explained 47% of the psychological QoL variance; self-directedness was the strongest predictor of higher QoL, while harm avoidance and introverted anhedonia predicted worse QoL. At the 1-year follow-up, self-directedness remained the most important predictor of psychological QoL. Conclusion: Individuals reporting PE can show psychological QoL when they are high on self-directedness. Those with high levels of introverted anhedonia and cognitive disorganization can have a lower QoL and may be at risk for mental health problems.

Associations between chronotype and schizotypy in healthy adults

Chronotype is defined as individual circadian preference, most often represented on the continuum between two extremes: morningness and eveningness. Growing number of studies show associations between circadian preference and various psychopathological symptoms. Eveningness has been shown to be related with depressiveness in non-clinical population, while mornigness has been presented as protective factor. Schizotypy is a schizophrenic-spectrum personality trait linked with a tendency to eccentricity, magical thinking and unusual experiences. Features of schizotypy has been identified in patients with mood disorders i.e bipolar disorder. While there is growing number of studies evaluating associations between chronotype and affective symptons, to our best knowledge there are no studies adressing the issue of association between schizotypy and circadian preferences. A total of 887 healthy individuals took part in the web-based study. Chronotype has been assessed with the use of Composite Scale of Morningness. Schizotypy has been measured with the use of the enlarged version of The Oxford-Liverpool Inventory of Feelings and Experiences (O-LIFE). Analysis revealed significant positive correlations between cognitive disorganization, introvertive/anhedonia, implusiveness/nonconformity and eveningness. No apparent influence of psychometrically-defined schizotypy on orientation-dependent contextual modulation of visual contrast detection.

We investigated the relationship between psychometrically-defined schizotypy and the ability to detect a visual target pattern. Target detection is typically impaired by a surrounding pattern (context) with an orientation that is parallel to the target, relative to a surrounding pattern with an orientation that is orthogonal to the target (orientation-dependent contextual modulation). Based on reports that this effect is reduced in those with schizophrenia, we hypothesised that there would be a negative relationship between the relative score on psychometrically-defined schizotypy and the relative effect of orientation-dependent contextual modulation. We measured visual contrast detection thresholds and scores on the Oxford-Liverpool Inventory of Feelings and Experiences (O-LIFE) from a non-clinical sample (N = 100). Contrary to our hypothesis, we find an absence of a monotonic relationship between the relative magnitude of orientation-dependent contextual modulation of visual contrast detection and the relative score on any of the subscales of the O-LIFE. The apparent difference of this result with previous reports on those with schizophrenia suggests that orientation-dependent contextual modulation may be an informative condition in which schizophrenia and psychometrically-defined schizotypy are dissociated. However, further research is also required to clarify the strength of orientation-dependent contextual modulation in those with schizophrenia.

Personality Measures Link Slower Binocular Rivalry Switch Rates to Higher Levels of Self-Discipline.

In this paper we investigated the relation between personality and the rate of perceptual alternations during binocular rivalry. Studies have demonstrated that slower rivalry alternations are associated with a range of clinical conditions. It is less clear whether rivalry dynamics similarly co-vary with individual differences in psychological traits seen across non-clinical population. We assessed rivalry rates in a non-clinical population (n = 149) and found slower rivalry alternations were positively related r(149) = 0.20, p = 0.01 to industriousness, a trait characterized by a high level of self-discipline using the Big Five Aspect Scales (BFAS). Switch rates were also negatively related r(149) = −0.20, p = 0.01 to cognitive disorganization, a schizotypy trait capturing schizophrenia-like symptoms of disorganization using the Oxford-Liverpool Inventory of feelings and Experiences (O-LIFE). Furthermore, we showed that that these relations with personality were unaffected by the inclusion or exclusion of mixed percept in the response analysis. Together these results are relevant to theoretical models of rivalry investigating individual differences in rivalry temporal dynamics and they may reduce concerns about the impact of task compliance in clinical research using rivalry as a potential diagnostic tool.

French Validation of the O-LIFE Short Questionnaire

Abstract. The original 104-item Oxford-Liverpool Inventory of Feelings and Experiences (O-LIFE) questionnaire is a validated schizotypy questionnaire distinguishing three schizotypy dimensions (Unusual experiences, Introvertive anhedonia, Cognitive disorganization). It also includes items on Impulsive nonconformity assessing traits sensitive to borderline and antisocial personality. Recently, Mason et al. (2005) published a shortened 43-item version including all sub-dimensions. The aim of this study was to validate a French version of this short form and to study the relationships between its French- and English-speaking versions. O-LIFE short data was obtained from 1,048 students from two higher education institutions in the French-speaking part of Switzerland. Results were compared with those from an English normative sample (n = 439). A series of confirmatory factor analyses showed acceptable configural and metric invariances across the two language versions. Moreover, results from the French data support the use of both four- and three-dimensional models of schizotypy and show expected correlations with other relevant self-report instruments. This French version of the O-LIFE short form is an appropriate tool to use in French-speaking environments.
