Highlights of the Eleventh Annual Conference Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, August 17-21

The folloiving paragraphs briefly summarize the eleventh annual meeting of the Western Council for Travel Research, which in the editor's opinion was the most significant meeting ever held by the group in terms of decisions made, quality of program, and numbers present. A far-reaching action was taken when the organization voted unanimously to affiliate with Travel Research Association (details on page 3). About 125 delegates attended a truly outstanding program. Conference registrants and members of WCTR automatically will receive a copy of the conference proceedings when they are published. Other readers will not want to miss receiving a copy of the proceedings and are urged to use the order blank on page 19 of the BULLETIN to order a copy. Since the end of World War II, there has appeared in American medicine a new specialist, the director of medical education. His role in graduate and postgraduate medical education is widely misunderstood by the practicing profession, hospital administrators, and medical school officials. Scores of non-university hospitals have established positions for a part-time or full-time educational director, with the expectation that he will create an outstanding program for interns, residents, and visiting staffs, magically solving current critical manpower shortages. Moreover, too often these appointments have been filled by unqualified or partially informed men. If these trends continue, it is certain that widespread dissatisfaction and disappointment will develop, tending to discredit an important contribution to the establishment of non-university hospitals as teaching institutions. Fifty-second Annual Meeting the Radiological Society of North America

The Fifty-second Annual Meeting of the Radiological Society of North America will open at the Palmer House in Chicago, Ill., on November 27, 1966. The following five and one-half days will be filled with one of the most exceptional educational programs available to radiologists in this country and throughout the world. The ever-popular diagnostic and therapy panels will be presented again on Sunday. Friday morning will close with The Work-in-Progress Program, along with the regular program. The growth of the Society and ever-increasing attendance in Chicago have caused the management of the Palmer House to reserve the largest block of rooms in the history of the Society. Herbert M. Stauffer, M.D., of Philadelphia, has continued as Chairman of the Program Committee and, with his six Vice-Chairmen, has prepared an outstanding program. Contributions of Colleges of Agriculture in Making Human Capital Available in Foreign Economic Development

The United States agricultural colleges and ex tension services need to take a key role in our foreign policy. The need is great for trained people in foreign agricultural development. Agricultural colleges are conducting special as sistance projects, training foreign students, and furnishing technical personnel. This has been valuable, but it is not enough if we are to be successful in the economic cold war and the world ideological conflict. In our foreign assistance program much more emphasis is needed on the development process, the problem-solving method, broad planning, and longer-term programs. Consid eration should be given to the cultural, psychological, institu tional, social, and economic changes which must accompany rapid progress and economic growth. Our agricultural colleges need to strengthen their research and educational programs on managing and facilitating changes or adjustments to the rapid adoption of new technology. This is important: (1) if we are to make headway on our major domestic farm problem, and (2) if we are to develop an outstanding technical assistance program with underdeveloped countries.

ADEQUATE GEOPHYSICAL MANPOWER IS OUR RESPONSIBILITY

Once again I am privileged to attend a Midcontinent Regional Meeting of the Society of Exploration Geophysicists—this time with the honor and responsibility of addressing you on a subject receiving increasingly serious consideration among scientific and engineering groups. As in the past I am highly impressed with the outstanding quality of the program and arrangements for this meeting. On behalf of the other officers of the national Society, who are all attending this meeting, I welcome this opportunity to congratulate the officers and committeemen of the sponsoring and participating societies for the successful culmination of their efforts and to commend the authors for their cooperation in contributing to this outstanding program.
