Interdisciplinary approaches to predicting evolutionary biology.

Forest conversion into pasture selects dung beetle traits at different biological scales depending on species pool composition.

The conversion of forests into open areas has large effects on the diversity and structure of native communities. The intensity of these effects may vary between regions, depending on the existence of native species adapted to open habitats in the regional pool or the time since habitat change.We assess the differences in species richness and functional diversity of dung beetle communities (Coleoptera: Scarabaeinae) between native forests and novel pasturelands of the Atlantic Forest and the Cerrado, two biomes with contrasting histories of human occupation in Brazil. We conducted standardized surveys in seven forest fragments and adjacent pastures in each region and measured 14 traits in individuals collected in each type of habitat at each particular site. We calculated functional richness, functional evenness, functional divergence, and community-weighted mean of traits for each area, and analyzed individual variation through nested variance decomposition and Trait Statistics.Communities were richer and more numerous at the Cerrado. We did not find any consistent relationship between functional diversity and forest conversion beyond the changes in species diversity. Although landscape changes were more recent at the Cerrado, the colonization of the new habitat by native species already adapted to open habitats lessens the functional loss in this biome. This indicates that habitat change's effects on trait diversity depend on the regional species pool rather than on time since land conversion.Forest conversion effects were primarily due to internal filtering. The effects of external filtering only appear at the intraspecific variance level, with contrasting differences between the Cerrado, where traits related to relocation behavior and size are selected, and the Atlantic Forest, where selection operates for traits related to relocation behavior and flight. These results evidence the importance of considering individual variance to address the responses of dung beetle communities to forest conversion.

Extent and nature of poverty in Australia and the impact on rural health

The Senate Standing Committee on Community Affairs is conducting an Inquiry into the extent and nature of poverty in Australia.1 The National Rural Health Alliance (the Alliance) made a submission to this Inquiry in February 2023, with findings expected in October 2023.2 The Alliance believes that all Australians, wherever they live, should have access to comprehensive, accessible and high-quality health, disability and aged care, as well as other social assistance services. The Alliance does not consider that poor access to services, suffering ill health or premature death should be accepted outcomes of living in rural Australia. The Alliance highlights the multidirectional inter-relatedness of health, education and poverty and explores these concepts in further detail in its submission to the Senate Inquiry. Reducing poverty is good for health outcomes as well as social and economic outcomes. Investing in actions to address poverty, and other determinants of health, is an investment in human capital and is central to health and well-being in rural Australia, as are measures that ensure universal access to health care for those who experience inequity. Universal and structural social service approaches to reducing economic inequality are also essential to addressing poverty and health inequity. Due to the inter-relatedness of poverty and ill health, such approaches must work alongside co-designed and tailored solutions that are adaptable and flexible and build upon strengths and capabilities in local communities. This is especially critical in rural areas where there are thin or failed markets and services or support are lacking. Rural areas are not mini-metropolitan areas where a city solution can be ‘helicoptered in’ to solve a specific rural problem (no matter how well-intended). Tailored measures are likely to be more accepted and embraced by residents, especially if they are co-designed and inclusive of diversity within the community and when shared ownership can help drive the outcomes. The disparities also extend to research in rural Australia. Poverty is relative. It involves people experiencing deprivation and making difficult life decisions about necessities (for example, choosing to use limited finances to pay for meals or medications, but not both). The affordability of food, groceries, energy, housing, fuel or transport and other essentials (including medicines, out-of-pocket health costs) plays an important role in these decisions. Access to high-quality, affordable health care, regardless of where you live, is important to reducing poverty and improving the health, well-being and broader social and economic goals of rural communities. The Grattan Institute has noted that poorer people are not getting the GP services they need, with disadvantaged Australians facing barriers to care. Furthermore, there are even higher access barriers for allied health services. Compared with GP care, allied health services have higher average out-of-pocket charges and make up a bigger share of household spending on health.9 This is without considering barriers related to workforce shortages and long wait times in rural areas. The National Preventive Health Strategy 2021–2030† provides direction for preventive health action across the course of life. It also presents an opportunity to build sustainable systems, address increasing burden of disease and reduce health inequities, as well as improve preparedness for emerging health threats.10 Preventive health actions can build on strengths and mitigate risks. The focus on providing the best start in life and across the life course, and its potential to influence actions outside the health sector given the crossover in risks and protective factors, can provide a focus for community co-design. These principles align with the Primary care Rural Integrated Multidisciplinary Health Services (PRIM-HS) model proposed by the Alliance as a solution for providing primary care services in rural areas where the market is failing or has failed.‡ While the causes of poverty are complex, as are the multifaceted responses required, the Alliance argues that improving access to health care and supporting the healthcare workforce in rural Australia will lead to significant improvements in health and well-being and lower the rate of poverty experienced. This will, of course, advantage not only rural Australians but all who benefit from the food supply, exports and gross domestic product (GDP) supplied by the 30 per cent of the population who live outside metropolitan centres. Dear Editor, The emergence of the XBB family of variations during the last few months has piqued the interest of virologists since this family has more mutations than any other to circumvent immunity1. A mutation in the XBB.1.5 variant may improve the virus’s ability to connect to cells and spread to new hosts. According to estimates from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, USA, the XBB.1.5 subvariant currently accounts for roughly 28% of US coronavirus disease 2019 cases, and its frequency is growing worldwide2. It seems to have quickly outcompeted a variety of other immunity-evading strains predicted to circulate together this winter in the Northeastern United States. The XBB.1.5 sublineage was discovered in the United States in October 2022 and has subsequently been found in numerous additional countries, including South Africa, for the first time in a sample obtained at the end of December 2022. It was predicted that XBB.1.5 would eventually be found in South Africa, given its increasing global prevalence3. In the United States, XBB.1.5 has been demonstrated to have a growth advantage over older versions, suggesting that it may outcompete other variants to become the predominant circulating variant in various circumstances. This branch of the family tree has been designated as a ‘subvariant of concern’ and is currently being tracked. The increased binding of the virus to the human ACE2 receptor is assumed to be the cause of the growth advantage, which in turn boosts viral transmissibility. This alteration (F486P) is located in the spike protein4. The XBB.1.5 strain has already been detected in eight patients in India, according to data compiled by the Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG). They reported a new case of this strain was discovered in Uttarakhand on 09 January 2023, adding to the three cases previously reported from Gujarat and one case reported from each of Karnataka, Telangana, Chhattisgarh, and Rajasthan5. The scientific community has come to the consensus that XBB.1.5, like its progenitor XBB, is an expert at evading the immune system. Vaccines and infections, even with older Omicron strains, are less effective because of their numerous spike mutations. Bivalent vaccines have been demonstrated to boost levels of antibodies that may prevent infection with XBB in the lab and are likely used in XBB.1.5 prevention6,7. At this time, it is unknown whether the degree of infection will vary across the various Omicron sublineages. The WHO Technical Advisory Group on Virus Evolution is now performing an ongoing risk assessment on XBB.1.5. Researchers argue that careful lineage tracking is necessary whether or not XBB.1.5 results in significant coronavirus disease 2019 waves. The subvariant has an uncommon mutation that might increase its infectiousness and provide a selective advantage for future evolution. Ethical approval Not applicable.
