HPV self-sampling implementation strategies to engage under screened communities in cervical cancer screening: a scoping review to inform screening programs.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) testing as a method of cervical cancer screening can be performed by healthcare providers or by patients through self-sampling directly in the community, removing several barriers experienced by under screened populations. The objective of this scoping review was to determine which HPV self-sampling implementation and engagement strategies have been used to engage under screened populations (i.e., Indigenous, newcomer, and rural and remote communities) in cervical cancer screening. A scoping review was conducted searching MEDLINE, CINAHL, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, and SocINDEX from inception to August 2023. The inclusion criteria were: (1) Indigenous, newcomer, and rural and remote communities; (2) countries identified as members of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development; and (3) intervention included HPV self-sampling. The review was registered prior to conducting the search (https://osf.io/zfvp9). A total of 26 studies out of 2,741 studies met the inclusion criteria. In-person engagement with trusted community leaders was the most widely used and accepted recruitment and engagement strategy across all three populations. Six out of seven studies with Indigenous communities distributed HPV self-sampling kits to eligible participants in person in a clinical setting for collection on site or at home. Similarly, nine of the identified studies that engaged newcomers recruited participants in person through the community, where eligible participants were either given a kit (n = 7) or received one in the mail (n = 2). Lastly, of the 10 identified studies engaging rural and remote participants in HPV self-sampling, six recruited eligible participants in person at various community locations and four used electronic medical records or registries to identify and mail kits to participants. HPV self-sampling through in person kit distribution and mail out of HPV self-sampling kits is an effective way to increase participation rates amongst under screened populations.

Influence of Rurality on Oral Cancer Trends among Organisation for Economic Co-Operation and Development (OECD) Member Countries-A Scoping Review.

Oral cancer is the general term used to describe cancers of the oral cavity and oropharyngeal region. These cancers are one of the leading causes of death in elderly residents within the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) member countries in the 21st century. This scoping review was carried out to assess the influence of rurality on oral cancer trends and patterns among OECD member countries. Four online databases (Medline, PubMed, Scopus, and CINAHL) were searched for studies that reported on oral cancer trends in rural and remote areas in OECD member countries. A total of 1143 articles were obtained initially; among them, 995 papers were screened to include 18 articles for this scoping review. Studies have reported increasing incidence and prevalence in the United States, Australia, Canada, and European countries wherein risk factors such as tobacco, alcohol, and human papilloma virus (HPV) infections were associated with oral and oropharyngeal cancers. Awareness among people living in rural areas about HPV-related cancers was very low, while rates of tobacco and alcohol abuse were noted to be rising more rapidly than among their urban counterparts. Furthermore, the ageing population was most affected compared to the younger age groups of people with oral and oropharyngeal cancer that are prevalent in these regions. Overall, despite living in developed countries, rurality was noted to be a significant factor in the lower life expectancy of oral cancer patients, mainly due to the limited accessibility to tertiary cancer care centres and advanced medical care.

Cultivating Political Efficacy: Facilitation as a Catalyst for Democratic Education and Civic Competence

ABSTRACT Participation in democratic processes is a cornerstone for good governance and societal trust. The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and academic literature emphasize enhancing civic engagement to foster democracy, shape policies, and build societal trust. Within this context, the concept of facilitation gains prominence as a vital mechanism that enhances participatory inclusivity and better decision-making through capacity-building. However, the current scope of facilitation is limited, mainly emphasizing its role as a skill for democratic engagement but neglecting its capacity to confront declining political efficacy. To address this oversight, this study aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of facilitation in the context of democratic participation and political efficacy. Conducting a systematized review of 54 publications, the paper contributes significantly to the largely underexplored domain of facilitation theory. The study's findings offer a nuanced understanding of facilitation's role in democratic engagement. Far from just serving as a tool for managing interpersonal relations, the data demonstrate that facilitation is primarily employed to navigate process conflicts concerning agency, power, and responsibility. Furthermore, the data highlights a significant link between facilitation practice and increased internal and external political efficacy. These insights position facilitation as a crucial catalyst for democratic education, playing a key role in fostering a more engaged and resilient democratic society.

Development of chemical categories for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and the proof-of-concept approach to the identification of potential candidates for tiered toxicological testing and human health assessment

Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a class of manufactured chemicals that are in widespread use and many present concerns for persistence, bioaccumulation and toxicity. Whilst a handful of PFAS have been characterized for their hazard profiles, the vast majority have not been extensively studied. Herein, a chemical category approach was developed and applied to PFAS that could be readily characterized by a chemical structure. The PFAS definition as described in the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) section 8(a)(7) rule was applied to the Distributed Structure-Searchable Toxicity (DSSTox) database to retrieve an initial list of 13,054 PFAS. Plausible degradation products from the 563 PFAS on the non-confidential TSCA Inventory were simulated using the Catalogic expert system, and the unique predicted PFAS degradants (2484) that conformed to the same PFAS definition were added to the list resulting in a set of 15,538 PFAS. Each PFAS was then assigned into a primary category using Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) structure-based classifications. The primary categories were subdivided into secondary categories based on a chain length threshold (>=7 vs < 7). Secondary categories were subcategorized using chemical fingerprints to achieve a balance between total number of structural categories vs.level of structural similarity within a category based on the Jaccard index. A set of 128 terminal structural categories were derived from which a subset of representative candidates could be proposed for potential data collection, considering the sparsity of relevant toxicity data within each category, presence on environmental monitoring lists, and the ability to identify plausible manufacturers/importers. Refinements to the approach taking into consideration ways in which the categories could be updated by mechanistic data and physicochemical property information are also described. This categorization approach may be used to form the basis of identifying candidates for data collection with related applications in QSAR development, read-across and hazard assessment.

Tibetan lake sediment records reveal historical emission and long-range atmospheric transport of chlorinated paraffins

The Tibetan Plateau, a recognized global sink for Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs), lies adjacent to two major emitting regions, inland China and India. This unique geographical setting makes it a pivotal site for examining the presence and compositional evolution of POPs following their long-range atmospheric transport (LRAT). This study focuses on the current predominant POPs, chlorinated paraffins (CPs). We comprehensively screened 675 homologues of the very short- (vSCCPs), short- (SCCPs), medium- (MCCPs), and long-chain CPs (LCCPs) in six dated sediment cores across the extensive Tibetan area. The findings unveiled pronounced temporal disparities in CP concentrations and compositions between Tibet's southern and eastern sectors, reflecting divergent usage and emission chronicles of inland China and India. Notably, a market shift in China from regulated SCCPs to the in-use MCCPs and LCCPs was observed in the 21st century, contrasting with India's unregulated production of SCCPs. The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) Screening Tool, developed to assess the overall persistence (POV) and long-range transport potential (LRTP) of organic chemicals, elucidated the erosion of CP source signatures induced by fractionation, a process that intensifies with transport distance from the source regions. This study enhances our understanding of the emission inventories and LRAT behavior of these transitional regulatory contaminants, highlighting the Tibetan Plateau's crucial role as an environmental sentinel in global pollution dynamics.

Socioeconomic and psychosocial outcomes of parents with children in out-of-home care: A scoping review

Families involved with child welfare services (CWS) often diverge systematically from the general population. They are more likely to live in challenging circumstances characterised by adverse socioeconomic conditions (e.g. poverty) and psychosocial adversities (e.g. mental health problems and substance misuse). Past research has primarily focused on the development and lifelong health and social outcomes of children who have experienced out-of-home care (OHC). However, the separation could also trigger negative emotions and other changes in parents, but much less attention has been paid to the associations between children’s placement and parents’ lives.This scoping review synthesises results from quantitative studies investigating the socioeconomic and psychosocial outcomes of parents who have experienced the removal of a child into OHC. Six databases were comprehensively searched, with 15 studies selected for inclusion in the review. Studies were conducted among countries of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) with substantial heterogeneity in the methods and designs, as grouped into three categories: “cross-sectional assessments” (4 studies), “longitudinal assessments” (7 studies) and “pre-post assessment” (4 studies).To a large extent, studies focus on psychosocial outcomes among mothers. The majority indicate that having a child placed in OHC is associated with the deterioration of psychosocial or socioeconomic outcomes among parents. We may conclude that parents who have experienced the removal of a child are a group that deserves tailored support and counselling. However, further quantitative research into aspects of parents’ lives after children’s OHC placement is needed, particularly with longitudinal designs and more rigorous methods to enable a better understanding of the causes and effects of these associations. This might support the development of targeted and effective interventions for these families.

Honey bee larval toxicity study designs: Applicability of the current study protocols and endpoints asa predictor of pesticide hazard for pollinators.

The assessment of pesticide risks to bees in North America currently relies in part on Tier 1 honey bee laboratory toxicity studies to support the registration and registration review processes for crop protection chemicals. For immature stages, the studies follow two standardized test designs recommended by the Organization for Economic Cooperation (OECD), evaluating acute (seven-day single-dose, TG OECD 237) and chronic (22-day repeated-dose, GD OECD 239) toxicity in bee larvae. In this article, we aim to evaluate the current approach for generating and interpreting honey bee larval toxicity data, enhancing pesticide risk assessment for pollinators. First, by considering that the repeated-dose larval study covers all stages of honey bee brood development up to adult emergence, we compared endpoints (larval LD/ED50 and LC/EC50 values) from seven-day acute exposure studies with the 22-day chronic exposure studies. Our goal was to identify the study design offering greater sensitivity in assessing pesticide toxicity to immature bees. Our second objective involved analyzing available weight data from emerged adults and comparing it to survival endpoints (e.g., NOEL and LD50) to determine if the weight after adult emergence would accurately represent a sensitive indicator of pesticide effects on developing honey bees. Our analysis determined that the use of a single 22-day chronic exposure study adequately covers all immature stages and that the toxicity values based on cumulative dose are more accurate and representative measures of exposure for immature bees than using endpoints based on estimated daily doses. Furthermore, our analysis suggests that measuring the weight of emerged adults was a more sensitive indicator than mortality of treatment-related effects in 22% of the compounds included in our analysis. Here we also discuss the importance of standardized protocols for proper collection of weight after emergence and the need for further discussion on the relevance of this parameter at risk assessment scheme. Using Discrete-Event Simulation to Model Web-Based Crisis Counseling Service Operation: Evaluation Study.

According to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, its member states experienced worsening mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to an increase of 60% to 1000% in digital counseling access. Hong Kong, too, witnessed a surge in demand for crisis intervention services during the pandemic, attracting both nonrepeat and repeat service users during the process. As a result of the continuing demand, platforms offering short-term emotional support are facing an efficiency challenge in managing caller responses. This aim of this paper was to assess the queuing performance of a 24-hour text-based web-based crisis counseling platform using a Python-based discrete-event simulation (DES) model. The model evaluates the staff combinations needed to meet demand and informs service priority decisions. It is able to account for unbalanced and overlapping shifts, unequal simultaneous serving capacities among custom worker types, time-dependent user arrivals, and the influence of user type (nonrepeat users vs repeat users) and suicide risk on service durations. Use and queue statistics by user type and staffing conditions were tabulated from past counseling platform database records. After calculating the data distributions, key parameters were incorporated into the DES model to determine the supply-demand equilibrium and identify potential service bottlenecks. An unobserved-components time-series model was fitted to make 30-day forecasts of the arrival rate, with the results piped back to the DES model to estimate the number of workers needed to staff each work shift, as well as the number of repeat service users encountered during a service operation. The results showed a marked increase (from 3401/9202, 36.96% to 5042/9199, 54.81%) in the overall conversion rate after the strategic deployment of human resources according to the values set in the simulations, with an 85% chance of queuing users receiving counseling service within 10 minutes and releasing an extra 39.57% (3631/9175) capacity to serve nonrepeat users at potential risk. By exploiting scientifically informed data models with DES, nonprofit web-based counseling platforms, even those with limited resources, can optimize service capacity strategically to manage service bottlenecks and increase service uptake.

A historical trajectory of Financial Education: from OEEC to the new ENEF

This paper discusses the relevant historical aspects of Financial Education. The aim is to contribute to a broad understanding of how the subject has been built up, changed and become an everyday topic. We start from the creation of the Organisation for European Economic Co-operation (OEEC), through the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), which developed Financial Education, until we arrive in Brazil, with the Estratégia Nacional de Educação Financeira (ENEF — National Strategy for Financial Education), in 2010, updated in 2020. The historical trajectory of the OECD and ENEF proposals shows a market approach to Financial Education. Over the years, in the context of education and Mathematics Education, discussions have matured, resulting in a Financial Education that questions the neoliberal system and seeks social transformation.

Asymmetric effects of GVC on poverty in ASEAN and OECD

PurposeThis study aims to analyze the relationship between global value chain (GVC) participation and poverty levels. Additionally, it investigates the impact of education levels, specifically analyzing literacy rates and tertiary education rates, on the correlation between GVC participation and poverty in Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) countries.Design/methodology/approachFixed effect and random effect models will be employed to quantify the relationships between the dependent and independent variables. The Hausman test is applied to determine the appropriate estimator between fixed and random effects. Also, in the model, time-fixed effect or two-way fixed effect has been used to control for unobserved heterogeneity both across entities and over time in panel data analysis.FindingsThe findings demonstrate that engagement in GVCs presents a promising avenue for stimulating development, advancing income per capita growth and facilitating job creation. Notably, the results illuminate that the poverty-alleviating impacts of GVC participation are most conspicuous in nations boasting elevated levels of educational attainment among their populace.Originality/valueThis research aims to promote a better understanding of the connection between GVC participation and the level of poverty, with GVC participation decomposed into forward participation and backward participation.

International Legal Framework for the Creation, Use and Conservation of Bioresource Collections

This article presents a detailed analysis of global and regional regulation related to the creation, use, research and conservation of biological (bioresource) collections and discusses the main trends in its development. Key approaches to the regulation of activities in the field of biological (bioresource) collections based on an analysis of acts of the European Union (EU), Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) are identified. While there are no international treaties that deal directly with biological (bioresource) collections at the global level, various agreements in force cover important regulatory aspects concerning the creation, use, research and conservation of biological (bioresource) collections. These aspects include (1) providing access to genetic resources; (2) technology transfer and rights over such resources and technologies; (3) financial aspects; (4) standards for the conservation of genetic resources. The corresponding international treaties concluded at global and regional levels imply both integrated and sectoral approaches to the regulation of biological (bioresource) collections (e.g., international treaties regarding crop genetic resources). The conclusion highlights the need to take into account the approaches elaborated within the framework of international and regional integration law in order to improve the relevant legal regulation in the Russian Federation.

The dimer effect: A refinement approach towards skin sensitization assessment in-chemico using Amino acid Derivative Reactivity Assay.

Skin sensitization is a key endpoint for safety assessment, especially for cosmetics and personal care products. The adverse outcome pathway for skin sensitization and the chemical and biological events driving the induction of human skin sensitization are now well understood. Several non-animal test methods have been developed to predict sensitizer potential by measuring the impact of chemical sensitizers on these key events. In this work, we have focused on Key Event 1 (the molecular initiating step), which is based on formation of a covalent adduct between skin sensitizers and endogenous proteins and/or peptides in the skin. There exists three in-chemico assays approved by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development-(1) Direct Peptide Reactivity Assay (DPRA), (2) Amino Acid Derivative Reactivity Assay (ADRA), and (3) Kinetic Direct Peptide Reactivity Assay (kDPRA) to quantify peptide/amino acid derivative depletion after incubation with test chemicals. However, overestimated depletion of the cysteine-based peptide/amino acid derivatives is known in such assays because of the dimerization of the thiol group. In this present work, we report the synthesis and structural confirmation of the dimer of N-(2-[1-naphthyl]acetyl)-L-cysteine (NAC) from the ADRA assay to allow simultaneous determination of (a) peptide depletion by quantifying NAC monomer and (b) peptide dimerization by quantifying NAC dimer thereby eliminating the overestimation. We present a case study with three chemicals to demonstrate the importance of this approach. Thus, this simultaneous assay gives a more informed view of the peptide reactivity of chemicals to better identify skin sensitizers.

Supply chain and logistics in smart cities: A systematic literature review

Rapid urban expansion gives rise to smart cities which pose immense logistical and supply chain challenges. The COVID-19 pandemic transformed the holistic system identified by Zhao et al. in 2021. The system encompasses logistics and supply chain integral to the concept of smart cities, with a focus on sustainability. This transformation requires an in-depth study on challenges of a common framework of policies for smart cities in countries comprising the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). The study employs an extensive literature analysis for the period 2020–2022. an approach which contextualizes the model. The model identifies the causes, impact, and spillovers of new trends in logistics and supply, including the sustainability of adopted technologies. The study includes the variables involved, and barriers to creating a shared model. The results reveal that the two elements affecting the supply chain and transport in smart cities are Industry 4.0 and 5.0 technologies supporting specific sectors. The resilience of small and medium-sized enterprises positively impacts the sustainability of large urban centres. The study presents both factors that help and hinder the adoption of environmental, social, and economic sustainability technologies.

&lt;div&gt;&lt;p class="1eAbstract-text"&gt;The results of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) research on the literacy test of Indonesia's Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) show that Indonesia's literacy ability is still low. Literacy skills are needed as a twenty one century skill that must be mastered from an early age. One way to increase literacy is to read storybooks. This study aims to analyze the relationship between the method of reading storybooks to early childhood literacy skills. The method used in this study is quantitative descriptive by distributing questionnaires using five Likert scales (always, often, sometimes, rarely, never). The research was conducted in a private kindergarten in Central Jakarta with a research subject of one hundred and nine students. The results of the research obtained are that there is a relationship between the method of reading storybooks to early childhood literacy skills. The longer the duration of reading stories to children, the higher their literacy skills. Therefore, the method of reading storybooks should be done with a longer duration and frequently, so that children's literacy skills can be maximized.&lt;em&gt;&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;/div&gt;

The role of regulation and regional government quality for high-growth firms: the good, the bad and the ugly

ABSTRACT High-growth firms (HGFs) are important for job creation and productivity growth. We investigate the relationship between product and labour market regulations, as well as the quality of regional governments that implement these regulations, and the development of HGFs across European regions. Using data from Eurostat, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), World Economic Forum (WEF), and Gothenburg University, we show that both regulatory stringency and the quality of the regional government relate to the regional shares of HGFs. In particular, we find that the effect of labour and product market regulations is moderated by the quality of regional government. Depending on the quality of regional governments, regulations may have a ‘good, bad or ugly’ influence on the development of HGFs. Our findings contribute to the debate on the effects of regulations and offer important building blocks to develop tailored policy measures that may influence the development of HGFs in a region.

The Relationship of Bullying Behavior and Social Interaction in School-Age Children at SDN 22 Jambi City

The problem that is currently widespread in education circles is bullying. The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) stated that Indonesia is ranked first in the position of bullying cases in ASEAN with 84% confirmed in 2023, and according to data from the Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI) Bullying cases are quite a worrying issue in the school environment. Data records that there will be at least 1,478 cases of bullying reported in 2023. Bullying makes it difficult for children to interact well in their social environment and this can hinder the child's development process. This research was conducted to identify the relationship between bullying behavior and social interactions in school-age children at SDN 22, Jambi City. The research method used was quantitative research using a cross sectional approach. The research population was students of SDN 22 Jambi City grades IV, V, VI, totaling 103 samples taken using total sampling techniques. This research uses a questionnaire instrument. The analytical test used is Spearman Rho. The results of the research show that generally the bullying behavior data is in the low category of 96 respondents (93.2%) and most social interactions are in the good category of 80 respondents (77.7%). The test results obtained were (p 0.01&lt;0.05). The conclusion is that there is a relationship between bullying behavior and social interaction in school-age children at SDN 22 Jambi City. It is hoped that the results of the research will be used as material for consideration by schools in providing guidance and counseling support services, so that students can understand the limits of social interaction.

Analysis of the Long-Term Interaction Between Molten Core and Dry Concrete at Fukushima Daiichi Unit 1

The latest investigations of Fukushima Daiichi Unit 1 have demonstrated that corium attack to the pedestal walls and pedestal floor has occurred in Fukushima Daiichi Unit 1 to a certain extent. The results of past analytical benchmarks, such as the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD)/Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) Benchmark Study of the Accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (BSAF project), have agreed with this finding. However, the latest investigation does not show evidence of unlimited molten core–concrete interaction (MCCI), which is one of the main discrepancies from the BSAF project. More recently a MCCI benchmark has been launched in the context of the OECD/NEA project ARC-F (Analysis of Information from Reactor Building and Containment Vessels of Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station). In the benchmark, common geometry, boundary, and initial conditions have been selected among all the participants. The results show an improved agreement among different codes for what concerns overall erosion, corium temperature, and hydrogen generation, confirming that to some extent, the earlier scatter found in these variables came from differences in the MCCI scenario modeled by each partner. However, common unlimited erosion, not observed by onsite visual inspections, is still predicted. Understanding the origin of this deviation might provide insights into boundary conditions, model drawbacks, or ill-posed assumptions that might need to be revisited (e.g. interfacial temperature, effective heat transfer coefficients, concrete heat transfer). In this paper, a summary of the overall results and a discussion of modeling and boundary conditions is presented to disclose the results of the activity and the future steps to be taken in the OECD/NEA project FACE (Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station Accident Information Collection and Evaluation).
