Extraction and Counter-Current Separation of Phenylpropanoid Glycosides from Pedicularis oederi Vahl by Deep Eutectic Solvent

Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) are mixtures of organic compounds displaying excellent solvent properties while keeping an ecofriendly character. In this study, DESs have been applied to the extraction of phenylpropanoid glycosides from Pedicularis oederi Vahl, successively separated by means of counter-current chromatography. Firstly, the ultrasonic-assisted extraction conditions were optimized by response surface methodology, and the results showed phenylpropanoid glycosides could be well extracted under the optimized extraction conditions with deep eutectic solvents. Then, the sample was separated by counter-current chromatography using ethyl acetate/aqueous solution of choline chloride and glycerol (6:6, v/v) as the solvent system. In about 360 min, four phenylpropanoid glycosides, including 31.6 mg of echinacoside, 65.3 mg of Jionoside A1, 28.9 mg of Forsythoside B, 74.1 mg of verbascoside, and 21.2 mg of kaempferol-3-O-rutinoside were obtained from about 900 mg of the sample. It revealed deep eutectic solvents could be well employed as a green solvent for the extraction and counter-current separation of natural products.

Effect of cellulase-assisted cold isostatic pressure extraction on the characteristics and functional properties of polyphenol extracts from camellia sinensis seeds

In this experiment, polyphenolic substances were extracted from Camellia sinensis seeds (CSS) using a synergistic treatment of cold isostatic pressure (CIP) and cellulase. The effects of pressure, treatment time, and cellulase addition on the experiment were investigated. And the optimal extraction conditions were established by single factor experiment and Box-benhken experiments: the pressure applied by CIP was 408.649 MPa, the treatment time was 10.995 min, and the cellulase addition was 4.098 %. The polyphenols in the extract were characterized and quantified using LC-MS/MS. By comparing the different treatments, it was found that the synergistic treatment of CIP and cellulase resulted in a higher extraction yield. FTIR, XRD and SEM mapping showed that CIP synergistic pretreatment with cellulase was able to disrupt the microstructure of the plant and promote the influx of the active ingredients into solution. Finally, the activity of the extracts was detected by using in vitro antioxidant experiments and RAW264.7 cellular anti-inflammatory experiments, which indicated that CIP and cellulase synergistically treated polyphenol extracts had high antioxidant and anti-inflammatory capacity. This experiment provides a new pretreatment method for extracting active substances from CSS.

From waste to resource: Hydrogen generation and antimicrobial activity of Ag-based photocatalysts recovered from biomedical waste

Electrocardiogram (ECG) disposable electrodes contain a substantial amount of silver (Ag), which can be extracted and recycled. Most current methods for recovering Ag from waste are expensive and environmentally harmful. This study investigated a sustainable chemical process for extracting Ag from discarded medical electrodes using a simple Cu(II) solution under moderately acidic conditions. Using response surface methodology (RSM) based on a three-level, full-factorial design, the optimized extraction conditions were determined as pH = 4.78, T = 80°C, [Cu(II)]₀ = 8.0 × 10⁻³ M, and [NaCl]₀ = 3.72 M. Under these conditions, a process efficiency approaching 100 % was achieved. Moreover, the recovery of metallic silver exceeded 85 %, even when using real matrices. (i.e., discarded ECG electrodes). As a result, the Ag-containing leachate solutions were utilized to synthesize silver-based materials with varying Ag content. These materials demonstrated (i) excellent photocatalytic activity for hydrogen production in aqueous solutions containing organic compounds and (ii) significant antipathogenic properties. In summary, effective Ag/TiO₂ photocatalytic materials with high efficiency for hydrogen production and antimicrobial activity were successfully prepared through a novel, sustainable, and cost-effective chemical recovery process of silver from discarded ECG electrodes.

Efficient separation of methyl ethyl ketone and water azeotrope using hydrophobic amino acid ester ionic liquids

BackgroundMethyl ethyl ketone (MEK), an essential organic solvent, is commonly produced via the n-butene method, where water emerges as the principal impurity. The conventional distillation processes, which are necessitated by the azeotropic behavior between MEK and water, result in a substantial expenditure of energy. As a result, liquid-liquid extraction represents a promising alternative for energy-efficient separation. MethodsIn this work, three hydrophobic amino acid ester ionic liquids L-phenylalanine ethyl ester bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl) imide ([Phe][NTf2]), L-leucine ethyl ester bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl) imide ([Leu][NTf2]) and L-valine ethyl ester bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl) imide ([Val][NTf2]) were utilized as extractants for separation of the binary azeotrope methyl ethyl ketone and water. The effects of extraction time, extraction temperature, mass ratio of MEK-water mixture to ionic liquid and initial concentration of MEK on extraction efficiency were investigated. Significant findingsThe results demonstrate that the ionic liquid [Phe][NTf2] exhibits superior extraction ability for the separation of the azeotrope methyl ethyl ketone and water. The maximum extraction yield of 99.86 % was achieved with the optimum extraction conditions of extraction time, 10 min, extraction temperature, 293.15 K, mass ratio of mixture to ionic liquid, 1:1 and initial concentration of MEK, 20 %. In addition, the relationship between the structure of ionic liquids and their extraction performance was revealed by quantum chemical calculations of ionic liquids with MEK and water. These ionic liquids were positioned as promising environmentally friendly alternatives to traditional organic solvents for the recovery of MEK from aqueous solutions, providing valuable insights for industrial applications.

Bioactivity, chemical profiling, and validation of Moringa oleifera cultivated in Suncheon (KR)

Moringa oleifera is a vegetable rich in vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients that can be used medicinally to enhance human health. This study described how the antioxidative properties of several organs of M. oleifera were used to optimise extraction conditions through their antioxidative capacity. In addition, an analytical approach applying seven marker chemicals was developed and used to construct the chemical profile while simultaneously ascertaining the primary components and their contents in the leaf extract. Of those, the content of quercetin 3-O-malonylglucoside (5) was the greatest, at 12.50 mg/g, followed by neochlorogenic acid (1) at 5.67 mg/g. In a study using molecular docking to target antioxidation, the main constituents of the leaf extract provided some evidence. This was the first study to analyse M. oleifera grown in Suncheon and provide an effective analytical tool to control and verify the quality of this plant species by using standards.

An efficient extraction device for microplastics in marine sediments and its applications.

Microplastics, defined as small pieces of plastic with a size less than 5 millimeters, constitute a significant sink for microplastics in marine sediments. Given the potential harm to nature and human beings, accurate detection of microplastics in marine sediments is of the utmost importance. The separation of microplastics from marine sediments represents a pivotal step in the quantitative detection of microplastics. This paper presents a high-efficiency extraction device for microplastics in marine sediments, with the objective of enhancing the effectiveness and efficiency of microplastics extraction. The device employs an air pump to thoroughly mix the samples and incorporates metal perforated plate fillers to achieve efficient sedimentation, thus facilitating the separation of microplastics from the surrounding marine sediments. Subsequently, the separated microplastics are passed through a series of pore sizes of stainless steel screens and glass fibre filters via suction filtration, allowing for the collection of microplastics of varying particle sizes for subsequent identification. Following a series of method trials, the optimal extraction conditions for this device were identified. The results demonstrated its excellent extraction effectiveness and high efficiency. To verify the feasibility of this device, it was used to investigate the microplastics in the sediments of Dongzhai Harbor, Hainan. The abundance, particle size distribution, shape, and composition of microplastics in the sediments of this area were obtained, which not only validated the practicality of this microplastic extraction device but also provided significant insights for ecological and environmental protection in the region.

Antioxidant peptides from silver carp steak by alkaline protease and flavor enzyme hydrolysis: Characterization of their structure and cytoprotective effects against H2O2-induced oxidative stress.

Silver carp steak is a rarely utilized silver carp processing byproduct. This study aimed to optimize a dual enzymatic method to extract antioxidant peptide components from silver carp steak and characterize their structure and in vitro antioxidant activity through ultrafiltration purification, response surface methodology, molecular docking, and radical scavenging activity analysis. The optimal extraction conditions for silver carp steak antioxidant peptides (SCSAP) were determined as 1:6 solid-liquid ratio, 1500 U/g alkaline protease addition, 4 h alkaline protease hydrolysis time, 1946 U/g flavor enzyme addition, and 2.5 h flavor enzyme hydrolysis time. The <3 kDa SCSAP component (SCSAP-3kDa) showed the strongest antioxidant activity, with its 1,1-diphenyl-2-trinitrophenyl hydrazine (DPPH) radical scavenging rate, ABTS radical scavenging rate, hydroxyl radical scavenging rate, metal ion chelating rate, and reducing capacity reaching 88.75%, 91.21%, 67.02%, 69.07%, and 0.985, respectively. Moreover, the three peptides (PF-7, GP-8, and YF-10) of 100 µg/mL could protect HepG2 cells from oxidative stress damage by reducing the oxidative damage level and activating Keap1-Nrf2-ARE pathways, enabling an increase of superoxide dismutases (SOD) activity, and a decrease of malondialdehyde (MDA) content and reactive oxygen species (ROS) level. The integrated results indicate the enormous potential of SCSAP-3kDa as a functional food ingredient in the food industry. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: This study selected the antioxidant capacity of silver carp steak peptides as the index and developed a facile dual enzymatic hydrolysis method to obtain three antioxidant peptides (PF-7, GP-8, and YF-10) with biological activity, providing a theoretical basis for bioavailability of antioxidant peptides from silver carp steak and contributing to their application in new functional foods.

Efficient Simultaneous Isolation of Pinostrobin and Panduratin A from Boesenbergia rotunda Using Centrifugal Partition Chromatography.

The bioactive flavonoids pinostrobin (PN) and panduratin A (PA) from Boesenbergia rotunda are essential for research and therapeutic applications. This study introduces an innovative method utilizing ultrasound-assisted extraction with n-hexane pre-treatment, followed by one-step centrifugal partition chromatography (CPC) purification. Extraction efficiency was evaluated using ultra high-performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC), and the isolated compounds were characterized through 1H-NMR and liquid chromatography electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry (LC-ESI-MS/MS), adhering to AOAC validation guidelines. Optimal extraction conditions comprised a particle size of 125 μm, a solid-to-liquid ratio of 1:30 g/mL, and a 10 min extraction time, yielding a crude extract of 6.96 ± 0.07%. Using an n-hexane/MeOH/water (5/3.4/1.6, v/v) solvent system in ascending mode, PN (2.16 mg, 98.78% purity) and PA (0.4 mg, 99.69% purity) were isolated from 67 mg of crude extract within 30 min. This streamlined approach enhances purification efficiency, allowing for faster extraction and higher purity, making it a suitable method for commercial applications.

Sage (Salvia officinalis) contains various active compounds, including flavonoids and terpenes. In this study, the terpenes content, including camphor, borneol, and eucalyptol, was analyzed. Both subcritical water and conventional solvent extraction methods were used. Using subcritical water extraction, the optimal extraction conditions were determined based on temperature and time to selectively extract the desired components from the sage. These optimal extraction conditions were as follows: camphor (130°C for 5 min, 2.73±0.39 mg/g), borneol (130°C for 5 min, 0.72±0.07 mg/g), and eucalyptol (150°C for 5 min, 0.51±0.03 mg/g). A comparison of extracts obtained via subcritical water extraction technology and various solvents revealed that the extracts obtained using subcritical water extraction had higher levels of all three components. This indicates that subcritical water extraction is more efficient and faster than traditional solvent extraction methods. Moreover, these results suggest that subcritical water extraction technology has the potential to be applied as an eco-friendly alternative to traditional extraction methods for obtaining active compounds like terpenoids.

Simultaneous determination of ethylene oxide, 2-chloroethanol and ethylene glycol residues in medical device products by gas chromatography

A gas chromatography-based method was developed for the simultaneous and rapid determination of ethylene oxide (EO), 2-chloroethanol (ECH), and ethylene glycol (EG) residues in medical devices after EO sterilization. A sample weighing 2.5 g was added with 5 mL of ethanol as the extraction medium, and the residual substances in the sample were extracted at 40 ℃ for 4 h. The samples were separated on a DB-WAX capillary column (30 m×0.53 mm×1.0 μm) and determined using a hydrogen flame ionization detector. The temperature was maintained at 40 ℃ for 5 min, increased to 120 ℃ at a rate of 40 ℃/min, held for 5 min, and then increased to 200 ℃ at a rate of 6 ℃/min, held for 2 min. The flow rate of the nitrogen gas was 3 mL/min. The split ratio was 5∶1. The inlet and detector temperatures were 200 and 300 ℃, respectively. The changes in the chromatographic peak areas over time (0.5-10 h) under different temperatures (20, 30, 40, and 50 ℃) were investigated, and the optimal extraction condition was determined to be 40 ℃ for 4 h. In the experiments, quantification was performed using an external standard method. EO, ECH, and EG exhibited good peak shapes and separation effects as well as good linearity within their respective ranges. The linear correlation coefficients for EO, ECH, and EG were greater than 0.99. The limits of detection (LODs) for EO, ECH, and EG were in the range of 0.10-0.40 μg/g, and the limits of quantification (LOQs) were in the range of 0.30-1.20 μg/g. The average recoveries under different spiked levels were in the range of 91.08%-116.08%, and the relative standard deviations (n=6) were in the range of 0.56%-8.45%. EO, ECH, and EG residues were found to exist at different levels in the medical devices tested. In particular, disposable infusion sets must be paid careful attention. ECH and EG were not detected in disposable sterile medical devices made of non-polyvinyl chloride materials, which may be due to the fact that the products themselves did not contain chloride ions, they were not exposed to chlorine-containing substances during their production, sterilization, storage, transportation, use, etc. This study established a method to detect EO residues in disposable medical devices, and has the advantages of simple operation, excellent specificity, accurate quantification, and good reproducibility. It can simultaneously detect three residual substances in medical devices while meeting the actual detection requirements for EO, ECH, and EG residues. The method can be used to scientifically and effectively evaluate the risk of EO residues in single-use medical devices sterilized with EO, and will be helpful for improving the quality of medical devices, ensuring the safety of device use, and providing a reference for regulatory supervision and testing.

Enhancing Indian onion (Allium Cepa L. var. aggregatum) extraction by microwave hydrodiffusion and gravity (MHG) method: Parametric study and optimization using FCCD design

The aim of this study is to extract essential oil from Indian onion bulbs (Allium Cepa L. var. aggregatum) using the microwave hydrodiffusion-gravity (MHG) method. The operating parameters considered include drying pre-treatment, material size (1-3 cm), microwave power (300-600 W), and extraction time (15-75 min). Optimal extraction conditions were identified through a two-stage process: initially screening data using a full factorial design, followed by process optimization using a face-centred central composite design (FCCD). The oil yield increased with extraction time up to a certain point, after which it plateaued, indicating no further yield improvements. The size of the material had an impact on how well microwave energy transferred; smaller particles provided larger surface areas, which improved extraction efficiency. Furthermore, the reduction in moisture content due to drying directly affected essential oil production, leading to higher yields. Sudden temperature increases could negatively impact oil quality, making temperature control during extraction critical. The microwave power level also played a significant role in the extraction process. The highest oil yield, 2.78%, was obtained with an extraction time of 75 min, a microwave power of 600 W, and a material size of 1 cm. Additionally, the extracted onion oil contained cyclohexanol, 5-methyl-2-(1-methylethenyl), and Z-citral.

Optimization of short-term dynamic and static maceration of Piper betle L. leaves to maximize extraction yield and anti-Candida albicans activity

This study aimed to optimize the extraction conditions of Piper betle leaves using a circumscribed central composite design, comparing dynamic and static maceration. Extraction temperatures were varied from 40°C to 80°C, while extraction times were varied from 15 to 45 minutes. Extraction yield, eugenol content in the raw material, and inhibition zone against Candita albicans were monitored. This study is notable for its comprehensive analysis of two maceration techniques under carefully controlled conditions and provides a novel comparison between dynamic and static maceration for this plant. The optimized conditions that maximized the extraction yield and inhibition zone were a temperature of 72.9°C for 19.4 minutes for dynamic maceration and 74°C for 19.4 minutes for static maceration. Under the optimal extraction conditions, static maceration resulted in superior extraction yield and eugenol content and a comparable inhibition zone compared to dynamic maceration. Specifically, static maceration produced an extraction yield of 27.50%±1.15%, eugenol content of 1.12%±0.05%, and an inhibition zone against C. albicans of 29.88±1.11 mm. Importantly, static maceration not only achieved comparable antifungal activity but also preserved the integrity of thermolabile compounds such as eugenol, which could contribute to a higher-quality extract. These findings have broader implications, particularly for industries prioritizing cost-effective and scalable extraction techniques for plant-based bioactives. In conclusion, static maceration was more suitable than dynamic maceration for extracting P. betle leaves. Moreover, the optimal conditions identified could serve as a guide for maximizing the extraction yield and anti-C. albicans of P. betle leaves.

Electrodeposition of Zn-Al-Layered Double Hydroxides With Interlayer Modification by Ibuprofen as Fiber Coating for Solid Phase Microextraction of Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs.

In this study, in situ electrodeposition of Zn─Al-layered double hydroxides (Zn─Al-LDHs) on the surface of pencil graphite substrate were practiced with interlayer modification by ibuprofen. The prepared composite increases the efficiency of the proposed method by increasing the level of interaction between the sorbent and the selected analytes including acetylsalicylic acid and naproxen (NAP) in real sample. Eventually, the extracted target analytes were injected into high-performance liquid chromatography ultraviolet (HPLC-UV) for their measurement. The experimental design including PBD and BBD was implemented to obtain the maximize efficiency and optimal condition for extraction of the target analytes. Therefore, in optimal conditions, limits of detection of 0.33-0.64µgL-1, linear dynamic range (LDR) of 1-100µgL-1 (with r2>0.9934), and limits of quantification (LOQs) of 1.1-2.1µgL-1 were obtained for target analytes by SPME-HPLC-UV. The intra-day relative standard deviation (RSD%) were found to range in 3.90%-5.30% (4.90%-6.80%) at concentration of 5-50µgL-1 (2-10µgL-1). According to obtained result, the relative recovery was calculated between 90% and 109%. Therefore, the obtained results showed that the selected method has a suitable performance for the preconcentration and extraction of acetylsalicylic acid and NAP in biological samples.

Effervescent-assisted Liquid-phase Microextraction Employing Switchable Hydrophilicity Solvent for the Determination of Cortisol and Testosterone in Oral Fluid by High-Performance Liquid Chromatography-Diode Array Detection.

Cortisol and testosterone are important biomarkers for diagnosing complex disorders, including polycystic ovary syndrome and Cushing's syndrome, where symptomatology usually overlaps with other prevalent disorders. This work proposes, for the first time, an analytical method based on a switchable hydrophilicity solvent as an extraction phase for the determination of cortisol and testosterone in oral fluid (OF) by high-performance liquid chromatography with diode-array detection. The optimized extraction conditions consisted of 1000µL of OF, 100µL of decanoic acid solution (65mg/mL), 170µL of Na2CO3, 900µL of H2SO4 and 150µL of acetonitrile for dilution. The method was validated, and coefficients of determination higher than 0.9926, the limit of detection of 4.55ng/mL and the limit of quantification of 15.00ng/mL were obtained. Intra-day precision varied from 5.6% to 11.9%, inter-day precision ranged from 6.1% to 13.5%, and relative recoveries ranged from 98.9% to 104.6% for cortisol, and 89.1% to 103.9% for testosterone. This methodology was successfully applied to five OF samples from volunteers. Moreover, the greenness of this methodology was evaluated based on the sample preparation metric of sustainability achieving a global score of 7.37 which can be considered sustainable.

Rapid on-site detection of illicit drugs in urine using C18 pipette-tip based solid-phase extraction coupled with a miniaturized mass spectrometer

Drug abuse is a social issue worldwide, and there is an increasing demand for on-site rapid detection of illicit drugs. In this study, a rapid and simple analytical method for the detection of 6-monoacetylmorphine (6-MAM), methamphetamine (MA), methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA), ketamine (K), norketamine (NK), and cocaine (COC) in urine was developed. The developed method combines C18 pipette-tip based solid-phase extraction (C18 PT-SPE) with a miniaturized mass spectrometer (miniMS), exhibiting remarkable simplicity, high sensitivity, and strong reliability, compared with the conventional method. The optimal extraction and elution conditions for C18 PT-SPE were considered as 9 and 3 aspirating-dispensing cycles, respectively. The miniMS parameters including spray voltage, isolation potential, and collision-induced dissociation energy for the detection of these six illicit drugs were optimized using a nano-electrospray ionization method. The limit of detection (LOD), limit of quantification (LOQ), linear range, and linearity for the analysis of six illicit drugs in urine with the proposed C18 PT-SPE-miniMS method were determined. Except for the LOD of K and COC was determined as 0.5 and 0.25 ng mL−1 respectively, and the LOD of 6-MAM MA, MDMA, and NK was determined as 1 ng mL−1. This method enables rapid on-site detection, providing easier operation, lower cost, and better portability compared to conventional methods, making it a potential tool in drug crime investigation and forensic science.

Biological activities of Hypericum spectabile extract optimized using artificial neural network combined with genetic algorithm application

Optimizing extraction conditions can help maximize the efficiency and yield of the extraction process while minimizing negative impacts on the environment and human health. For the purpose of the current study, an artificial neural network (ANN) combined with a genetic algorithm (GA) was utilized for that the extraction conditions of Hypericum spectabile were optimized. In this particular investigation, the main objective was to get the highest possible levels of total antioxidant status (TAS) for the extracts that were obtained. In addition to this, conditions of the extract that exhibited the maximum activity have been determined and the biological activity of the extract that was obtained under these conditions was analyzed. TAS values were obtained from extracts obtained using extraction temperatures of 30–60 °C, extraction times of 4–10 h, and extract concentrations of 0.25-2 mg/mL. The best model selected from the established ANN models had a mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) value of 0.643%, a mean squared error (MSE) value of 0.004, and a correlation coefficient (R) value of 0.996, respectively. The genetic algorithm proposed optimal extraction conditions of an extraction temperature of 59.391 °C, an extraction time of 8.841 h, and an extraction concentration of 1.951 mg/mL. It was concluded that the integration of ANN-GA can successfully be used to optimize extraction parameters of Hypericum spectabile. The total antioxidant value of the extract obtained under optimum conditions was determined as 9.306 ± 0.080 mmol/L, total oxidant value as 13.065 ± 0.112 µmol/L, oxidative stress index as 0.140 ± 0.001. Total phenolic content (TPC) was 109.34 ± 1.29 mg/g, total flavonoid content (TFC) was measured as 148.34 ± 1.48 mg/g. Anti-AChE value was determined as 30.68 ± 0.77 µg/mL, anti-BChE value was determined as 41.30 ± 0.48 µg/mL. It was also observed that the extract exhibited strong antiproliferative activities depending on the increase in concentration. As a result of LC-MS/MS analysis of the extract produced under optimum conditions in terms of phenolic content. The presence of fumaric, gallic, protocatechuic, 4-hydroxybenzoic, caffeic, 2-hydoxycinamic acids, quercetin and kaempferol was detected. As a result, it was determined that the H. spectabile extract produced under optimum conditions had significant effects in terms of biological activity.

An emulsion extraction system composed of hydrophobic deep eutectic solvent and water for synchronous extraction of oil and phenolic compounds from U.S. pecans [Carya illinoinensis (Wangenh.) K. Koch]

U.S. pecan nuts are rich in oil and phenolic compounds with important biological functions. At present, the reports about simultaneous extraction of oil and phenolic compounds are limited, and the traditional procedure is complicated and the yield is low. In this study, a new emulsion formed by hydrophobic deep eutectic solvent (DES) and water was used as extractant for synchronous extraction of oil and phenolic components from U.S. pecans, and subsequently the two were recovered from the upper and lower phases based on the incompatibility of DES and water, respectively. The oil and phenolic compounds obtained by the optimization of extraction conditions were 615.29 mg/g and 82.11 mg/g, respectively, which were higher than those obtained by conventional methods. At the same time, the extraction mechanism is discussed through the extraction kinetics and thermodynamics. The extraction process conformed to the Fick’s second law, and it was an endothermic process. After directional recovery by macroporous resin and back-extraction, the effectiveness of the method was proved by the analysis of fatty acid composition of oil, spectral characterization of phenolic compounds and antioxidant activities.

Extraction of rhodium from supported liquid-phase hydroformylation catalysts with supercritical carbon dioxide

The continuous extraction of the rhodium inventory in supported liquid-phase (SLP) catalytic materials utilized in the hydroformylation (HyFo) of 1-butene was investigated by supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2). Optimization of extraction efficiency involved varying parameters such as temperature (90 and 120 °C), pressure (10, 20 and 30 MPa), and the addition of methanol as a polar co-feed to the extraction medium (0–20 vol%). The results underscored the critical role of methanol in facilitating extraction, as experiments employing pure scCO2 yielded no rhodium recovery. Furthermore, extraction performance demonstrated sensitivity to temperature and pressure adjustments during the process. Notably, the use of 10 vol% methanol at 120 °C and 30 MPa achieved complete rhodium extraction from the grained SLP materials, which was identified as the optimum extraction condition. This study highlights the potential for scaling up in-situ rhodium extraction processes within HyFo production plants based on SLP catalysts, emphasizing significant implications for industrial applications.

Valorization of Potato Peels (Solanum tuberosum) Using Infrared-Assisted Extraction: A Novel Sprouting Suppressant and Antibacterial Agent.

Recently, there has been a growing interest in reducing waste to promote environmental sustainability, with particular focus on agricultural by-products, especially fruits and vegetables. Potato, a widely used crop across various industries, generates a significant amount of peel waste. This study aims to valorize potato peels using water bath extraction (WBE) and infrared-assisted extraction (IRAE), both with distilled water as the solvent, followed by assessments of antioxidant, antibacterial, and anti-sprouting activities. Optimization using response surface methodology identified optimal extraction conditions for WBE (90 °C for 70 min) and IRAE (80 °C for 10 min), with both methods yielding 3.5 mg GAE/g DM in polyphenol content. IRAE demonstrated superior energy efficiency and enhanced antioxidant activity. The extracts exhibited antibacterial properties against both Gram-positive (Listeria monocytogenes) and Gram-negative bacteria (Proteus sp. and Salmonella sp.), with inhibition zones ranging from 10 to 14 mm. Furthermore, the potato peels extract showed significant anti-sprouting effects at room temperature, reducing both the number and size of sprouts compared with the control. HPLC analysis showed the presence of different phenolic compounds such as rutin, catechin, caffeic acid, protocatechuic acid, chlorogenic acid, p-coumaric acid, and gallic acid in one or both extracts. These findings suggest that potato peels extract holds potential for applications in the food industry as a natural preservative due to its antioxidant properties, as well as a sprout suppressant. The antibacterial activity of the extracts suggests their potential as a natural preservative as well, offering protection against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria that may be present in food.

Bio-Guided Extraction of a Phenolic-Rich Extract from Industrial Peanut Skin with Antioxidant and Hypotensive Potential.

Peanut composition includes phenolic compounds, especially in the skins, which are often not consumed. High blood pressure affects more than one billion people worldwide and is considered a high-risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. Several studies have correlated antihypertensive activity with the total phenolic content present in the plants. This study evaluated the hydroethanolic extraction of phenolic compounds from the industrial residue of peanut skin and evaluated the antioxidant and antihypertensive capacity of these extracts using in vitro models. A rotational central composite design (DCCR) was proposed to study the influence of the variables: (1) the ethanol concentration on the hydroalcoholic extractor solution, and (2) the proportion of solid sample (waste) per liquid in the extraction (mass/volume) in a simple solid-a liquid extraction process. The optimal extraction conditions within this model were 50% ethanol in water, and the proportion of sample to extraction solution (m/v) equaled to 0.2. The extract obtained had significant antioxidant capacity, both in chemical (ORAC) and in cellular models, with potential for free radical scavenging. Significant levels of ACE inhibition were also found, indicating antihypertensive activity.
