Characteristics and optical properties of atmospheric aerosols based on long-term AERONET investigations in an urban environment of Pakistan

Radiative balance, local climate, and human health are all significantly influenced by aerosol. Recent severe air pollution over Lahore, a city in Pakistan calls for more thorough research to determine the negative impacts brought on by too many aerosols. To study regional aerosol characteristics and their differences from various aspects, in-depth and long-term (2007–2020) investigations of the columnar aerosol properties over the urban environment of Lahore were carried out by using AERONET data. The Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD400) and Angstrom Exponent (AE400–870) vary from low values of 0.10 to a maximum value of 4.51 and from 0.03 to 1.81, respectively. The huge differences in the amount of AOD440 as well as AE440–870 show the large fluctuation of aerosol classes because of various sources of their emission. During the autumn and winter seasons, the decreasing trend of the optical parameters of aerosols like Single Scattering Albedo (SSA) and Asymmetry Parameter (ASY) with increasing wavelength from 675 to 1020 nm indicates the dominance of light-absorbing aerosols (biomass burning (BB) and industrial/urban (UI). Due to the long-distance dust movement during spring, summer, and autumn, coarse mode particles predominated in Lahore during the study period. Dust type (DD) aerosols are found to be the dominant one during spring (46.92%), summer (54.31%), and autumn (57.46%) while urban industry (BB/UI) was dominant during the winter season (53.21%). During each season, the clean continental (CC) aerosols are found to be in negligible amounts, indicating terrible air quality in Lahore City. The present research work fills up the study gap in the optical properties of aerosols in Lahore and will help us understand more fully how local aerosol fluctuation affects regional climate change over the urban environment of Lahore.

Case Study of the Aerosol Optical Properties in the Atmosphere over Wuhan, China

The research on regional aerosol optical properties is of great significance for exploring climate regulation mechanisms and controlling atmospheric pollution. Based on the solar radiation observation platform, a three-month optical observation of atmospheric aerosols was conducted in Wuhan, China. The daily and monthly variation characteristics of aerosol optical depth (AOD550), Angstrom parameter (α440–870), and turbidity coefficient (β) were revealed, and the interrelations between the three optical parameters were fitted. Then, the potential relationships between atmospheric particulate matter (PM2.5, PM10) with AOD550 and β were discussed. The results show that the average values of AOD550, α440–870, and β in this case study are 0.42, 1.32, and 0.20, respectively. The frequency distribution patterns of the three optical parameters are all unimodal. AOD550 has a good linear correlation system with β, and the Pearson correlation coefficient reaches 0.94, while its correlation with α440–870 is not significant. The daily variation in AOD550 and β both show an increasing trend, and their monthly increases are more than 50%. However, the daily variation in α440–870 is relatively stable, and the fitted line is a nearly horizontal line with no significant monthly variation. The fluctuation of particulate matter concentration affects the aerosol optical properties to some extent, among which β has a prominent effect on the response to the change in PM2.5 concentration with a linear correlation coefficient of 0.861. As the concentration of particulate matter increases, the proportion of fine particulate matter in the atmosphere increases monthly, and the ratio of PM10 to PM2.5 concentrations decreases from 1.8:1 to 1.2:1. Atmospheric pollution conditions are frequent during this observation period, mainly at mildly turbid levels. Atmospheric turbidity shows an increasing trend month by month, and the concentration of particulate matter increases rapidly. The response of atmospheric aerosol optical properties to the changes in fine particulate matter concentration is significant, and controlling the particulate matter content in the atmosphere is an effective means to mitigate aerosol pollution.

Infrared Reflection-Absorption Spectroscopy of α-Keto Acids at the Air-Water Interface: Effects of Chain Length and Headgroup on Environmentally Relevant Surfactant Films.

A variety of organic surfactants are found at air-water interfaces in natural environments, including on the surfaces of aqueous aerosols. The structure and morphology of these organic films can have profound impacts on material transfer between the gas and condensed phases, the optical properties of atmospheric aerosol, and chemical processing at air-water interfaces. Combined, these effects can have significant impacts on climate via radiative forcing, but our understanding of organic films at air-water interfaces is incomplete. Here, we examine the impact of the polar headgroup and alkyl tail length on the structure and morphology of organic monolayers at the air-water interfaces. First, we focus on the substituted carboxylic acids, α-keto acids, using Langmuir isotherms and infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (IR-RAS) to elucidate key structures and phase behaviors of α-keto acids with a range of surface activities. We show that the structure of α-keto acids, both soluble and insoluble, at water surfaces is a compromise between van der Waals interactions of the hydrocarbon tail and hydrogen bonding interactions involving the polar headgroup. Then, we use this new data set regarding α-keto acid films at water surfaces to examine the role of the polar headgroup on organic films using a similar substituted carboxylic acid (α-hydroxystearic acid), an unsubstituted carboxylic acid (stearic acid), and an alcohol (stearyl alcohol). We show that the polar headgroup and its hydrogen bonding interactions can significantly affect the orientation of amphiphiles at air-water interfaces. Here, we provide side-by-side comparisons of Langmuir isotherms and IR-RA spectra for a set of environmentally relevant organic amphiphiles with a range of alkyl tail lengths and polar headgroup structures.

The first balloon-borne sample analysis of atmospheric carbonaceous components reveals new insights into formation processes

Atmospheric aerosol optical, physical, and chemical properties play a fundamental role in the Earth's climate system. A better understanding of the processes involved in their formation, evolution, and interaction with radiation and the water cycle is critical. We report the analysis of atmospheric molecules/particles collected with a new sampling system that flew under regular weather balloons for the first time. The flight took place on January 18, 2022 from Reims (France). The samples were subsequently analyzed by high-resolution mass spectrometry (Orbitrap) to specifically infer hundreds of organic components present in 4 different layers from the troposphere to the stratosphere (up to 20 km). Additional measurements of O3, CO, and aerosol concentrations a few hours before this flight took place to contextualize the sampling. After separating common species found on each filter that might be common to atmospheric layers or residuals for contaminations, we found that each sample yields significant differences in the number and size of organic species detected that should reflect the unique composition of atmospheric layers. While tropospheric samples yield significantly oxidized and saturated components, with carbon numbers below 30 that might be explained by complex organics chemistry from local and distant source emissions, the upper tropospheric and stratospheric samples were associated with increased carbon numbers (C > 30), with a significantly reduced unsaturation number for the stratosphere, that might be induced by strong UV radiations. The multimodal distributions of carbon numbers in chemical formulas observed between 15 and 20 km suggest that oligomerization and growth of organic molecules may take place in aged air masses of tropical origin that are known to carry organic compounds even several km above the tropopause where their lifetime significantly increases. In addition, the presence of organics may also reflect the extended influence of wildfires smoke injected during the spring and summer in the NH hemisphere before the in situ observations and their long-lifetime in the upper troposphere and stratosphere.

A Comprehensive Review on Study Methods of Aerosol Optical Properties in Different Dimensions

A comprehensive understanding of the optical properties of atmospheric aerosol is essential for a variety of applications, such as optical imaging, optical communication, and remote sensing. In recent years, many theories and numerical simulation methods have been developed to connect aerosol physical-chemical properties to their intrinsic and integral optical properties. Usually, simulations and measurements are intertwined to synergistically attain the retrieval of aerosol optical properties and mitigate or even eliminate the adverse impacts of aerosol during imaging, sensing, or communication. This review covers the fundamental theories of aerosol optical properties, the development of numerical simulations, the instrument-based sampling measurements, and the cutting-edge techniques of remote sensing. Numerical simulations have been progressing from symmetric particles to asymmetric particles over the past two decades, although any simulation method is limited by specific shape and a restricted size parameter range. Thus, this review also examines the most typical advances in aerosol instrumentation that are frequently used to measure the intrinsic optical properties of unknown aerosols. Such obtained properties validate simulations and constitute the basis of integral optical properties. In terms of practical applications, integral optical properties are the most critical knowledge about atmospheric aerosol. Remote sensing measurements, be it ground-based, airborne, or satellite-based, all retrieve integral optical properties of atmospheric aerosol from various perspectives, which are elaborated upon in this review. In conclusion, this review provides an all-encompassing comprehension of aerosol optical properties.

Calibration method of Fernald inversion for aerosol backscattering coefficient profiles via multi-wavelength Raman–Mie lidar

Mie scattering lidar is widely used in the detection of atmospheric aerosol optical properties, however, the inversion algorithm is lack of accuracy, which is mainly caused by the inaccurate calibration of reference condition in Fernald inversion. Here, we propose a multi-wavelength aerosol backscattering ratio parameterized-calibration method (MABP-CM) based on parameterized equations for reference condition calibration of Fernald inversion. The aerosol backscatter ratios at 355 nm, 532 nm, and 1064 nm wavelengths are respectively calculated from the aerosol size distribution of aerial survey data. We find that there is a positive correlation between the backscatter ratios at different wavelengths, and the parameterized equations are established. The parameterized equations can be used as conversion factors of aerosol backscatter ratio at different wavelengths, which is beneficial to improving the calibration accuracy of multi-wavelength backscatter ratios at reference height in Fernald inversion. The Raman inversion is used to retrieve the 355 nm aerosol backscattering coefficient and aerosol backscatter ratio. Then, combined with MABP-CM, the 532 nm and 1064 nm aerosol backscatter ratios at reference height are respectively derived, to obtain the backscattering coefficients with Fernald backward integration equation. With the improved method, the reference height is allowed not to be at clear atmosphere, and the reference condition can still be accurately calibrated. Simulation verification of multi-wavelength backscattering coefficients is carried out with aerial survey data. Our simulation suggests that MABP-CM can reduce the error of 532 nm backscattering coefficient to ±20%, and reduce the error of 1064 nm backscattering coefficient to ±40%. Multi-wavelength aerosol backscattering coefficients can be simultaneously retrieved with high accuracy on cloudy and heavily haze days with MABP-CM. Finally, the multi-wavelength Raman–Mie lidar is used to observe the short-term and long-term changes of aerosol backscattering coefficient on clear and cloudy days.

Retrieval of refractive index of ultrafine single particle using hygroscopic growth factor obtained by high sensitive surface plasmon resonance microscopy

When exposed to different relative humidities (RHs), the optical properties of atmospheric aerosols will change because of changes in the aerosol particle size and complex refractive index (RI), which will affect haze formation and global climate change. The potential contributions of ultrafine particles to the atmospheric optical characteristics and to haze spreading cannot be ignored because of their high particle number concentrations and strong diffusibility; measurement of the optical properties of wet ultrafine particles is thus highly important for environmental assessment. Therefore, a surface plasmon resonance microscopy with azimuthal rotation illumination (SPRM-ARI) system is designed to determine the RIs of single particle aerosols with diameters of less than 100 nm in the hygroscopic growth process. Measurements are taken using mixed single particles with different mass ratios. The RIs of mixed single aerosols at different RHs are retrieved by measuring the scattering light intensity using the SPRM-ARI system and almost all the RIs of the bicomponent particles with different mass ratios decrease with increasing water content under high RH conditions. Finally, for each of the bicomponent particles, the maximum standard deviations for the retrieved RI values are only 2.06×10−3, 3.08×10−3 and 3.83×10−3, corresponding to the NaCl and NaNO3 bicomponent particles with a 3:1 mass ratio at 76.0% RH, the NaCl and glucose particles with a 1:3 mass ratio at 89.0% RH, and the NaCl and OA particles with a 1:1 mass ratio at 78.0% RH, respectively; these results indicate that the high-sensitivity SPRM-ARI system can measure the RI effectively and accurately.

Relationships between atmospheric mercury and optical properties of spring outflow aerosols from Southeast Asia

Southeast Asia is a major biomass burning (BB) source area and BB has been identified as an important source of mercury (Hg) and aerosols to the atmosphere. Previous studies found correlations between atmospheric Hg and Delta-C (BC370–BC880) during the BB episodes in low-elevation BB source areas; however, whether this relationship persists during long-range transport remains unknown. Lulin Atmospheric Background Station (LABS), a high mountain background site in central Taiwan, has monitored the impact of BB long-range transports from Southeast Asia on atmospheric Hg and aerosols in downwind areas since 2006 and 2008, respectively. As such, these data provide an opportunity to investigate the relationship between atmospheric Hg (PBM and GOM) and aerosol optical properties, such as Delta-C and absorption Ångström exponent (AAE370-880). In this study, three long-range transport BB events were observed at LABS in the springtime during 2014–2016. Significant positive correlations with PBM/GOM were observed for Delta-C and (R2 = 0.34–0.51) and AAE370-880 (R2 = 0.41–0.54) during the BB events, while poor correlations were shown under non-BB episodes. Additionally, the positive correlation between PBM and AAE370-880 suggests that the Hg(II) may be preferably absorbed onto organic aerosols or originated from the same emission sources. This study demonstrated that AAE370-880 can be used to identify the source of Hg(II) from BB long-range transport. In addition, our results also indicated the influences of aerosol chemical compositions on the partitioning of Hg(II), which is important to further the understanding of atmospheric Hg cycling.

Optimal estimation method applied on ceilometer aerosol retrievals

The solution of the lidar equation is an ill-posed problem that requires nonlinear methods to retrieve the atmospheric aerosol optical and microphysical properties. Particularly, in the last decades, the most applied solution for the elastic lidars is through the well known Klett-Fernald-Sasano algorithm for retrieving the backscatter coefficient. To solve this inversion problem, we propose to apply the optimal estimation method to a Vaisala CL51 ceilometer range corrected signals for retrieving under two different frameworks, the particle backscatter coefficient or the ratio and the lidar constant. The optimal estimation is a Bayesian inversion fed by a set of a priori information. In this work, to obtain the suitable prior, we have tested two approaches that involved measurements and synthetic data. The first data set was obtained from previous inversions using the classical Klett-Fernald-Sasano method, and the second one by using Mie simulations fed by aerosol properties from OPAC database.The optimal estimation method used for elastic lidar inversion presents two main advantages compared to the classic approaches. On one hand, there is no need for Rayleigh zone determination and on the other hand, the uncertainty of the retrieved products is directly estimated, therefore the quality of the results is highly dependant on the prior selection. To evaluate the performance of the model, low and high aerosol accumulations scenarios were considered, finding that the backscatter coefficient was oscillating between 5 and 7 (kmsr)−1 in the first 3 km agl with uncertainties lower than 27 %at degraded spatial resolutions. Additionally, constant and height-dependent priors were tested reaching relative errors in percentage up to 5% between them. Besides, relative errors were also analyzed for the prior covariance matrices estimated either from synthetic lidar data and Klett's retrievals, where the errors are lower than 2% by using one instead of the another. However, scale factors were applied to the synthetic prior covariance matrices to reach the convergence.The results at retrieving the particle backscattering were compared to those ones estimated from Klett's inversion, considering Klett inversion as the reference. For the extreme scenario of inversions, considering aerosol accumulations at different layers, the bias between the optimized profiles was lower than −0.5 (kmsr)−1 in the first 0.5 km and 0.5 (kmsr)−1 above 1.5 km. Here, we also shown a two-parameter optimization for the lidar constant and lidar ratio, applied to 39 aerosol inversions, finding relative errors lower than 1 % and 2.3 %, respectively, considering those ones from Klett inversion as the reference.

Atmospheric aerosol and black carbon optical properties and associated radiative forcing under haze conditions

The optical properties and radiative forcing of atmospheric aerosol (ARF) and black carbon (BC) aerosol (BCRF) in ultraviolet (UV), visible (VIS), near-infrared (NIR), and shortwave (SW) spectra were investigated under haze conditions based on the observations of the Aethalometer and sun-sky radiometer and simulations from libRadtran. The results show that the BC concentrations increased greatly from 2.73 μg/m3 under clear-air conditions to 7.95 μg/m3 under severe haze conditions, while BC aerosol optical depth (AOD) increased from 0.025 to 0.092. A high correlation (R2=0.62) was found between BC AOD and absorbing aerosol optical depth (AAOD) derived from the sun-sky radiometer. The BCRF in SW (BCRFSW) varied from -10.20 W/m2 under clear-air conditions to -25.40 W/m2 under severe hazy conditions. However, its fraction in ARF (ARFSW) decreased from 19% to 17% simultaneously, which is mainly related to the decrease of the ratio of BC AOD to AOD. The fraction of ARF in VIS in ARFSW decreased from 56.3% under clear-air conditions to 50.5% under severe haze conditions, while the fraction of BCRF in VIS in BCRFSW was much larger, and increased from 72.9% to 73.8%. The BCRF efficiency (BCRFE) was much larger than ARF efficiency (ARFE), and both of them decreased with the development of haze. The ARFE in SW decreased from -173.84 W/m2 under clear-air conditions to -112.75 W/m2 under severe haze conditions while BCRFESW varied from -482.50 W/m2 to -321.88 W/m2. The decrease of ARFE and BCRFE is related to the increase of aerosol loading and asymmetry factor (ASY). The ASY increased and the forward scattering was enhanced with the development of haze due to the hygroscopic growth of aerosol particles, which reduced the extinction efficiency of aerosols including BC on solar radiation and the cooling effect on the surface.

The optical characteristics of atmospheric aerosol are vital in the determination of the regional climate trend. Biomass burning is typically known to influence aerosol optical characteristics. Following the incessant biomass burning and the recent drop in precipitation over Western Cape, the aerosol optical properties with a focus on the impact of biomass burning are studied over Cape Town using data from AERONET (Aerosol Robotic Network) and MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer). In general terms, measurements from both platforms significantly agree on the estimates of aerosol optical depth (AOD) and water vapor content (WVC). The mean AOD 0.075 (± 0.022) and Ångström exponent (AE) 0.63 (± 0.19) derived from AERONET demonstrate the dominance of coarse mode aerosol typical of maritime aerosol. Similarly, aerosol particle size distributions display the predominance of coarse mode particles. However, the derived refractive index is more representative of urban-industrial aerosol. Also, estimated back-trajectories show that more than 70% of the aerosol particles over the region originate over the ocean. Atmospheric vapor increases from winter to summer and mainly influenced by air temperature, supersaturation level, and absorbing aerosol. Furthermore, two significant sources accounted for biomass burning related to high AOD values: local biomass burning and regionally transported aged smoke majorly from elsewhere in Sothern Africa.

The Optical Properties of Aerosols at the Summit of Mount Tai in May and June and the Retrieval of the Complex Refractive Index

To study the optical properties of background atmospheric aerosols in East China, we carried out observations of the physical, chemical and optical properties of atmospheric aerosols at the summit of Mount Tai (Mt. Tai, 1533.7 m above sea level) from 13 May to 25 June 2017. The results show that the average scattering coefficient ( σ sca , 550 ) at 550 nm of the aerosols at the summit of Mt. Tai is 40.3 Mm−1, and the average absorption coefficient ( σ abs , 550 ) at 550 nm is 16.0 Mm−1. The complex refractive index of aerosols is a key parameter for aerosol retrieval and modeling. There are few studies on the equivalent complex refractive index of aerosol in the Taishan area. We calculated the aerosol equivalent complex refractive index using the observed aerosol scattering coefficients, absorption coefficients and particle size distribution data, providing more data support for future modeling in this region. The real part (n) of the complex refractive index at 550 nm of aerosol ranges from 1.31 to 1.98 (mostly under 1.50), with an average value of 1.38, while the imaginary part (k) ranges from 0.014 to 0.251 (less than 0.10 for over 95% samples), with an average value of 0.040. The analysis of the n and k of the aerosol average complex refractive index shows that the scattering properties of the aerosols at the summit of Mt. Tai are relatively weak and the absorption properties are relatively strong when compared with those of other kinds of aerosols. The k of the aerosol complex refractive index at the summit of Mt. Tai has strong correlations with the wind speed, temperature, as revealed by the correlation analysis.

Research on BP network for retrieving extinction coefficient from Mie scattering signal of lidar

Abstract Mie lidar is a powerful tool for detecting the optical properties of atmospheric aerosols. However, there are two unknown parameters in the Mie lidar equation: the extinction coefficient and the backscattering coefficient. In the common methods for solving the equation, it is necessary to make assumptions about the relationship between the two unknown parameters. These assumptions will reduce the detection precision of extinction coefficient. In view of this, the back propagation (BP) neural network is used to retrieve extinction coefficient from the Mie scattering signal of lidar. Firstly, the structure and main parameters of the BP network are designed according to the practical application. In order to improve the convergence speed and prevent falling into local minima, the initial weights and thresholds of BP network are optimized by genetic algorithm (GA). Then the GA-BP network is trained with Mie scattering signal and the extinction coefficient retrieved by Raman method. Thus the mathematical relationship between Mie scattering signal and the extinction coefficient is stored in the BP network. The trained GA-BP network is then used to retrieve the extinction coefficient from Mie scattering signal in different conditions and the applicability of the GA-BP network is researched. The research will promote the development of Mie lidar retrieving algorithm.

Study on the characteristics of black carbon during atmospheric pollution conditions in Beijing

Black carbon (BC), not only has a negative impact on human health, but also contributes to visibility degradation and the attenuation of solar radiation due to light absorption. In this paper, we investigated the variations of BC concentration, BC optical characteristics and its effects on the physical and optical properties of atmospheric aerosols based on AERONET data during atmospheric pollution conditions in Beijing from 2012 to 2017. The results indicated that the average annual ground-level BC concentration and BC/PM2.5 were 8.9 μg m−3 and 6.7%, respectively, from 2012 to 2017 during atmospheric pollution conditions in Beijing. The annual mean ground-level BC concentration showed weak variation, but the monthly variation was pronounced during atmospheric pollution conditions. Moreover, the BC column concentration had a higher correlation with absorptive aerosol optical thickness (AAOT) at 870 nm (R2 = 0.93) than 440 nm (R2 = 0.73). The difference in AAOT between 440 nm and 870 nm was more significant under high BC column concentration. The seasonal variation of the BC column concentration that contributed to the AAOT at 870 nm displayed a consistent monthly average variation tendency. The BC column concentrations were divided into three segments of low, moderate, and high according to the results of the approximately normal distribution of the BC column concentration. Compared with high BC concentration, the single scattering albedo (SSA) and asymmetry parameter were enhanced by 0.05 and 0.04 in low BC concentrations, respectively. On the contrary, the fine mode fraction (FMF) was dropped by 12.5% in low BC concentrations. A higher BC concentration contributed to the enhancement in the AAOT and the extinction ratio of the fine mode aerosol. Meanwhile, the atmospheric particles' forward scattering ability was also attenuated under a high BC concentration.

Impact of biogenic emissions of organic matter from a cool-temperate forest on aerosol optical properties

Abstract Terrestrial biogenic emissions of organic matter can affect the optical properties of atmospheric aerosols and thus impact the radiation budget. To investigate this, the chemical parameters of submicrometer water-soluble aerosols (WSA) collected on filters were compared to optical properties measured by a sky radiometer at a cool-temperate forest site in northern Japan. From June to December 2015, the WSA samples were collected within the forest canopy, while aerosol optical depth (AOD), single scattering albedo (SSA), absorption Angstrom exponent (AAE), and scattering Angstrom exponent (SAE) were retrieved above the canopy. The optical properties were compared with the filter-based chemical parameters only when the vertical transport of aerosol particles from the forest canopy to the air above it was significant. The result showed that the AOD and the mass concentrations of WSA exhibited similar and distinct seasonal variations with peaks in summer and autumn. In summer, sulfate accounted for 60% of the mass of WSA, which was linked to a high SSA (>0.95), low AAE (1.15 ± 0.84), and low SAE (1.25 ± 0.22). In contrast, water-soluble organic matter (WSOM) accounted for 70% of the mass of WSA in autumn. This large fraction of WSOM was associated with a decrease in SSA (0.90–0.95) and an increase in AAE (2.45 ± 0.91) and SAE (1.46 ± 0.15). The results suggest that in summer, aerosol particles with a greater size range corresponded to aerosol chemical compositions dominated by sulfate. In contrast, smaller particles with a strong light absorption at shorter wavelengths, were likely important in autumn and associated with a composition dominated by WSOM. The majority of WSOM in autumn has previously been associated with emissions of α-pinene from the forest floor and the subsequent formation of biogenic secondary organic aerosols (BSOA). This study indicates that α-pinene-derived SOAs, mostly originating from the forest floor, were associated with a summer to autumn decrease in SSA. This process can modulate the radiative effect on a regional scale.

Three-wavelength polarization Scheimpflug lidar system developed for remote sensing of atmospheric aerosols.

Multiple-wavelength polarization lidar techniques have been of great interest for the studies of aerosol backscattering color ratio, Ångström exponent, particle size distribution, hygroscopic growth, etc. Conventional lidar techniques are mainly based on the time-of-flight principle. In this paper, a three-wavelength polarization Scheimpflug lidar (SLidar) system, based on the Scheimpflug imaging principle, has been developed for studying optical properties of atmospheric aerosols. The SLidar system utilizes low-cost, compact, multimode laser diodes as light sources and two complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) sensors as detectors. The depolarization ratio was measured at the 808 nm band by successively detecting atmospheric backscattering signals from two orthogonally polarized laser beams with a polarization CMOS camera, while the 520 nm and the 405 nm backscattering signals were recorded by a second CMOS camera based on the time-multiplexing scheme. Atmospheric remote measurements were carried out in May and July 2019 on a near-horizontal path. The aerosol extinction coefficient, linear volume depolarization ratio, and the Ångström exponent have been retrieved and evaluated to study aerosol properties during different atmospheric conditions, which were in good agreement with optical properties reported by previous studies.

PROCESSING JUMP POINT OF LIDAR DETECTION DATA AND INVERSING THE AEROSOL EXTINCTION COEFFICIENT

Abstract. For a long time, the research of the optical properties of atmospheric aerosols has aroused a wide concern in the field of atmospheric and environmental. Many scholars commonly use the Klett method to invert the lidar return signal of Mie scattering. However, there are always some negative values in the detection data of lidar, which have no actual meaning，and which are jump points. The jump points are also called wild value points and abnormal points. The jump points are refered to the detecting points that are significantly different from the surrounding detection points, and which are not consistent with the actual situation. As a result, when the far end point is selected as the boundary value, the inversion error is too large to successfully invert the extinction coefficient profile. These negative points are jump points, which must be removed in the inversion process. In order to solve the problem, a method of processing jump points of detection data of lidar and the inversion method of aerosol extinction coefficient is proposed in this paper. In this method, when there are few jump points, the linear interpolation method is used to process the jump points. When the number of continuous jump points is large, the function fitting method is used to process the jump points. The feasibility and reliability of this method are verified by using actual lidar data. The results show that the extinction coefficient profile can be successfully inverted when different remote boundary values are chosen. The extinction coefficient profile inverted by this method is more continuous and smoother. The effective detection range of lidar is greatly increased using this method. The extinction coefficient profile is more realistic. The extinction coefficient profile inverted by this method is more favorable to further analysis of the properties of atmospheric aerosol. Therefore, this method has great practical application and popularization value.

Analysis of Atmospheric Aerosol Optical Properties in the Northeast Brazilian Atmosphere with Remote Sensing Data from MODIS and CALIOP/CALIPSO Satellites, AERONET Photometers and a Ground-Based Lidar

A 12-year analysis, from 2005 to 2016, of atmospheric aerosol optical properties focusing for the first time on Northeast Brazil (NEB) was performed based on four different remote sensing datasets: the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), the Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET), the Cloud-Aerosol LIDAR with Orthogonal Polarization (CALIOP) and a ground-based Lidar from Natal. We evaluated and identified distinct aerosol types, considering Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) and Angström Exponent (AE). All analyses show that over the NEB, a low aerosol scenario prevails, while there are two distinct seasons of more elevated AOD that occur every year, from August to October and January to March. According to MODIS, AOD values ranges from 0.04 to 0.52 over the region with a mean of 0.20 and occasionally isolated outliers of up to 1.21. Aerosol types were identified as sea spray, biomass burning, and dust aerosols mostly transported from tropical Africa. Three case studies on days with elevated AOD were performed. All cases identified the same aerosol types and modeled HYSPLIT backward trajectories confirmed their source-dependent origins. This analysis is motivated by the implementation of an atmospheric chemistry model with an advanced data assimilation system that will use the observational database over NEB with the model to overcome high uncertainties in the model results induced by still unvalidated emission inventories.

Contrasting changes in snow cover and its sensitivity to aerosol optical properties in Hindukush-Karakoram-Himalaya region

Snow cover plays a major role in the earth's climate system. The stability of the snow mass over Hindukush-Karakoram-Himalaya (HKH) in contrast to the worldwide retreat of mountainous glaciers and its relation to aerosol concentration remains poorly understood. The proposed study focused on the understanding of this relationship between various snow parameters and the optical properties of atmospheric aerosols over the HKH region of Northern Pakistan between March and June for a prolonged study period from 2005 to 2015. The aerosol's optical properties were retrieved from snow covered pixels in the study area to avoid the contamination of snow albedo (SA) by other features of land surfaces. The results revealed an increasing trend in the snow cover area (SCA) at the rate of 577.3, 1090.6 and 652.3 km2/year in March, May and June, respectively, with a decrease in April due to the uneven distribution of SCA during 2005–2015. The results revealed a strong positive correlation (R = 0.77) between SCA and SA, whereas SCA and SST were negatively correlated (R = −0.82) during the study period. The Cloud-Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder (CALIPSO) indicated the presence of scattering and absorbing aerosols (e.g., dust, polluted dust, and smoke) both at high and low altitudes. However, the diminution of aerosol concentration was caused by their short time span in atmosphere and the occurrence of snowfall that washed them out from the snow at high altitudes. The findings indicated an increased SCA, with contrasting behavior in the ablation period. However, the presence of aerosols demands proper attention, to monitor any future threat to the high-altitude cryosphere.
