Tb3+ embedded zinc lead phosphate (TbZnLP) glasses with various compositions of ZnO and PbO have been prepared by melt quenching technique. In this paper we have studied the optical and structural properties of these glasses with the increase of [ZnO]/[PbO] ratio. The XRD and FTIR profiles have been recorded to analyze the structural aspects of the samples. Optical characteristics have been investigated by absorption, indirect optical band gap, excitation energy, photoluminescence, decay time and CIE 1931 chromaticity coordinates. Several absorption peaks are observed in the UV-VIS-NIR regions, and the strong absorption occurs around 377 nm corresponding to 7F6 → (5D3, 5G6) transition. The excitation spectra show the occurrence of an intense peak at 376 nm. Photoluminescence study reveals eleven emission peaks and the most intense emission is found at 541 nm (green), due to 5D4 → 7F5 transition. The decay profiles for 5D4 → 7F5 and 5D3 → 7F4 emissions are measured and the variation of the corresponding lifetimes are analyzed. The CIE 1931 chromaticity diagram shows the strong green emission with high colour purity. Our investigation indicates that TbZnLP glasses are applicable as strong and bright green colour emitting materials.
