These structures include the Boothia uplift, Rens Fiord uplift, Inglefield uplift (redefined unit, replacing Bache Peninsula arch), and possibly several other structures, such as the Cornwall arch, which are now expressed mainly in Mesozoic-Cenozoic strata but may represent rejuvenated Caledonian lineaments. The data show the presence of previously unrecognized pre-Keweenawan felsic magmatic events and provide a framework for relating events in the Nipigon plate to the Keweenawan rift.Tonalite gneiss from the Archean basement underlying the Nipigon plate has a minimum age of 2716 Ma. An anorogenic granite pluton at English Bay, Lake Nipigon, that is observed to grade into rhyolite is dated at 1536.7 + 10/−2.3 Ma. The rhyolites are intercalated with quartz arenites, and this may date the initiation of Sibley Group sedimentation. Samples (two) of the Logan diabase sills from different parts of Lake Nipigon have been dated using zircon and baddeleyite. The zircon fractions define an age of 1108.8 + 4/−2 Ma.A rhyolite from the Osier volcanics at Agate Point on the north shore of Lake Superior gives an age of 1097.6 ± 3.7 Ma. This is from the magnetically reversed sequence and provides a maximum age for the magnetic reversal. The zircons show evidence of inheritance and define a mixing line with an upper intercept of 2635 +143/−125 Ma. A porphyry, probably a flow, from the base of the Osier Group, dated at 1107.5 + 4/−2 Ma, is similar in age to the Logan sills. The presence of inherited zircons in the felsic rocks of the Osier Group indicates partial melting of Aichean crust during emplacement of basaltic magma. A variety of zircon ages from a conglomerate containing felsic porphyry clasts at the base of the Osler Group suggests that pre-Keweenawan felsic magmatism took place at about 1730 Ma and 1600 Ma in the Black Bay Peninsula area. Class, Educational Ideologies, and Mass Opinion in Capitalist Crisis: A Canadian Perspective

There is agreement among theorists of nearly all political stripes that the advanced capitalist societies are now in a period of protracted social crisis. While capital-intensive restructuring has recently permitted some industrial corporate enterprises to reverse the declining profits trend of the past decade, the private propensity to invest in new production initiatives remains generally depressed, high unemployment rates persist, especially for young people, and collective consumption capacity continues to be limited by declining real wages and high interest rates. Governments also operate under growing debt burdens and the fiscal necessity to hold down public expenditures, while both infrastructural/natural environmental requirements and established social welfare entitlements demand increases. general public's trust in the leadership of many major institutions appears to have declined significantly since the mid-1960s (e.g., Lipset and Schneider, 1983), and numerous social indicators, such as the increasing incidence of property crimes, point to a mounting breakdown of social order. Publicly funded educational systems have been particularly prone to criticism during this social crisis. Since World War II, increasing educational attainment levels have been associated with public perceptions of the declining general quality of schooling. More recently, declining birthrates have decreased the demand for school expansion, and growing numbers of elderly people have exerted their own social welfare priorities on government budgets. Finally, the presence of large numbers of relatively highly schooled yet unemployed youths graphically contradicts long-held assumptions about the benefits of current forms of schooling (e.g., Meyer and Rowan, 1977) and directly encourages growing questioning of the adequacy of school performance and standards. As Boyd (1983:4) puts it, The overall effect of the context of decline is inevitably a scramble for scarce resources, intensifying special interest group activity and the politicization cf education. Indeed, given the evident crucial role of schooling in shaping the next generation and the persistence of very strong popular faith in the potential of education to facilitate societal development (e.g., Gallup, 1982; Livingstone, Hart, and McLean, 1983), educational reform proposals have once again become a central focus in public debate about resolving the crisis (cf. Curti, [1935] 1959). This article attempts to explain the basic impetus for educational reform initiatives in the current crisis from an historical materialist perspective and, in particular, attempts to identify major social forces influencing educational restructuring efforts. 1 More specifically, the focus is on social-class relations and the manner in which structural constraints of class location and the subjective choices of class leaders and class actors generally *are related to the maintenance and change of current educational forms. primary sources of evidence are studies that have been conducted over the past several years in Ontario-Canada's industrial heartland. These studies examine changing class structure, the educational rhetoric of leading class spokespersons, and mass opinion on educational issues. Government commissions in Ontario have recently put forward recommendations for major reorganization of both high school and higher education systems (Secondary Education Review Project, 1981; Committee on the Future Role of Universities in Ontario, 1981). This analysis considers class-based views of basic educational practices implicated in these commission reports. Different historical origins as well as different locations within the world capitalist system may be associated with survey data used in this article are drawn from the OISE Survey of Educational Issues, which has been conducted since 1978 under the auspices of the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education. Dimorphic Incompatibility in Turnera Hermannioides Camb. (Turneraceae)

Turnera hermannioides (Turneraceae) is a distylous, diploid, perennial restricted to open, sandy sites in northeastern Brazil. Four populations sampled in Sergip6 contained equal proportions of longand short-styled plants. The style and stamen dimorphism in floral morphs is associated with differences in pollen size and pollen production. In contrast, flower size, ovule number, and seed fertility of the morphs are not significantly different. A controlled pollination program demonstrated that individuals of T. hermannioides possess a selfand intra-morph incompatibility system. The only pollinations resulting in significant seed production were between the floral morphs. Populations of T. hermannioides grow intermingled with T. ulmifolia, a widespread polymorphic complex containing forms that resemble T. hermannioides. A crossing program between T. hermannioides and diploid and tetraploid varieties of T. ulmifolia revealed barriers to hybridization particularly in crosses at the diploid level. It is concluded that T. hermannioides is a restricted diploid species that is reproductively isolated from T. ulmifolia. Distyly is reliably reported from 23 flowering plant families (Ganders, 1979). In taxa on which experimental work has been undertaken, it has usually been shown that the stamen-style dimorphism is closely associated with a diallelic self-incompatibility system as well as several morphological polymorphisms involving pollen size, pollen production, and stigmatic papillae number and length. Although there is general agreement that distyly is an outbreeding mechanism (Darwin, 1877; Crowe, 1964; Vuilleumier, 1967), the functions of the various floral polymorphisms that accompany self-incompatibility are still unclear (Yeo, 1975; Ganders, 1979). The large neotropical genus Turnera (Turneraceae) contains some 54 species of which 37 are reported to be heterostylous (Urban, 1883). Species within the genus are poorly defined, and there is need for a modem taxonomic revision of the group. With the exception of studies of distyly in the widespread polymorphic weed complex T. ulmifolia L. (including the synonyms T. subulata Smith and T. trioniflora Sims) by Lock (1904), Barrett (1978), and Bentley (1979), there are no published reports of experimental work on the reproductive biology of species of Turnera. To broaden understanding of the nature of distyly in the genus, we initiated a study of the breeding system of T. hermannioides, a herbaceous to woody perennial native to northeastern Brazil. In addition to documenting general features of distyly, incompatibility relationships, and population structure in the species, we also investigated its crossing relationships with T. ulmifolia, with which it is superficially similar in habit (Urban, 1883) and frequently sympatric. MATERIALS AND METHODS All populations of Turnera hermannioides studied occur in the state of Sergipe in northeastern Brazil. Detailed localities are presented in Table 1. At each population, the number of longand short-styled plants was recorded. In populations 2, 3, and 4, the entire flowering population was scored whereas in population 1, a complete sample of the accessible part of the population (ca. one-third of the total size) was made (Table 5). Deviations from the expected 1: 1 morph frequency were analyzed using the G-statistic which was calculated for each population. In addition, pooled and heterogeneity G-statistics were calculated (Sokal & Rohlf, 1981) to examine whether population structures were similar. The Osborne and Lillian H. Smith Children's Book Collections

The Osborne and Lillian H. Smith Children's Book Collections Jane Bingham Boys and Girls House of the Toronto Public Library is the setting on St. George Street for two collections of children's books that have brought renown to the city of Toronto and delight to thousands of visitors. They are the Osborne and Lillian H. Smith Collections. The first of these, the Osborne Collection, began in 1949 with a generous gift of two thousand early children's books published in England before 1910. The donor was Dr. Edgar Osborne, a county librarian of England, who deemed Boys and Girls House the most appropriate setting for his fine collection. The Lillian H. Smith Collection, begun in 1962 on the 50th anniversary of children's services in Toronto, and named for the librarian who had led them for many years with distinction, has in it books published in English since 1910, selected for their high literary and artistic quality. Each of these collections has been increased yearly with additions by gift and acquisition. They are growing collections, responsive to what becomes available in the book market and to new knowledge about children's literature of all times. The Osborne Collection now numbers some 10,000 volumes, the Lillian H. Smith Collection over 2,500. The treasures contained in these two Collections offer a unique opportunity to a surprisingly wide range of people. They receive annually thousands of visitors, individuals and groups. Some of these may be attracted simply by a desire to see books they remember as personal friends of earlier years. Many are collectors of children's books, amatuer or professional, come to study the wealth of knowledge represented by the Collection. Others are bibliographers or students including those at universities preparing themselves for careers as children's librarians. The collections are of great value for the increasing number of people who now give serious academic study to children's literature in the conviction that it is worthy of the scholarly attention devoted to other creative writing. The treasures of the Collections are shared more widely by means of two published catalogues of the Osborne books, by special reprints of some of its books, by lectures and talks given in North America and England over the years by the head of the Osborne Collection, Miss Judith St. John, and by lively correspondence with inquirers all over the world. The Collections are further known through the program of the association of Friends of the Osborne and Lillian H. Smith Collections, over four hundred and fifty strong from Canada and elsewhere, which each year presents lectures by distinguished guests that are later published and which supports the Collections in other ways. This association, "The Friends of the Osborne and Lillian H. Smith Collections," deserves the full support of all ChLA members, particularly those who may need to do research in either collection. The membership fee is $15 per year. As part of that fee, members who join in 1977 will receive a facsimile of Historia di Lionbruno, a fairy tale printed in Venice in 1476 and translated in 1976 by Dr. Beatrice Corrigan.
