Use of online public access catalogue among library and information science undergraduates in Southern, Nigeria

The study investigated the use of online public access catalogue among library and information science undergraduates in Southern Nigeria. The objectives of this study were to find out the purpose of OPAC use among LIS undergraduates, to find out the extent undergraduates use OPAC, level of satisfaction of OPAC use and to identify the constraints associated with the use of OPAC among the undergraduates. The descriptive survey design was used adopted for this study. One thousand, four hundred and forty (1,440) questionnaires were distributed and nine hundred and twenty (920) were retrieved. The total enumerative sampling techniques was used to select the entire population. Data generated were analysed using simple percentage and frequencies. Finding revealed that LIS undergraduate in Southern Nigeria use OPAC for the purpose of identifying books using author, title and subject. However, they use it to a little extent and they were satisfied to a large extent with its use. power failure, inadequate OPAC terminals or workstations, lack of proper guidance from the library staff and lack of skills to use OPAC independently were some of the constraints associated with use of OPAC. The recommended among others, that alternative sources of power supply should be provided in libraries considering the erratic nature of power supply in Nigeria. Also, librarians and libraries should ensure that LIS undergraduates are sufficiently trained to make effective use of the OPAC.

Online Public Access Catalogue: Factors Affecting Use E-Catalog

Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC) is one of the e-catalog information technologies applied in libraries. OPAC is a library information retrieval system that can be accessed online. State Islamic University of Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta has been using OPAC since 2012 and OPAC users are increasing from year to year. An information system will be used by users if it suits their needs. The successful implementation of OPAC raises questions about the factors that influence this success. For this reason, this study aims to determine the factors that influence users to use OPAC. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) is a multivariate statistical technique which is a combination of factor analysis and regression analysis (correlation) which aims to examine the relationships between variables in a model. Processing using SEM will be carried out to find the relationship between the variables to be tested, which variables are interconnected, and are there any unrelated variables. The results of processing the variables using SEM can show what variables attract users to use the e-catalog. Acceptance of information systems can be measured by several evaluation models that have been developed at this time. There are many evaluation models used to measure. Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) is the appropriate model to use for this study, because this study is about the acceptance of a system. In addition, several previous studies used by researchers as references also used TAM as their study method to assess user acceptance of a system. This study modifies TAM, which is used to determine user acceptance of an information system, by adding three exogenous variables, information quality, perceived enjoyment, and user interface. Results of this study proved that information quality, user interface, perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, and behavioral intention to use, are all factors that influence the actual use of OPAC. Perceived enjoyment is a variable that cannot be proved affects the actual use of OPAC.

Perceived Impact of Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) On effective retrieval of information resources by postgraduate students in Benue State University, Makurdi

ABSTRACT
 The study investigated the perceived impact of OPAC on effective retrieval of information resources by postgraduate students in Benue State University, Makurdi. The study looked at the perceived impact of OPAC on effective retrieval of information resources, purpose of utilizing OPAC by postgraduate students, search strategies used by postgraduate students for effective retrieval of information resources, challenges as well as strategies to enhance the use of OPAC by postgraduate student for effective retrieval of resources. Five (5) objectives with corresponding research questions guided the study. The study adopted descriptive survey research design. The population of the study was made up of 38 postgraduate students who are registered with Benue State University Library. However, the census sampling was adopted for the study due to the small nature of the population. The instrument for data collection was self-structured questionnaire titled “Perceived Impact of OPAC on Information Retrieval Questionnaire” (PIOPACIRQ) which was validated by experts and a reliability coefficient of 0.947 was obtained. Data was collected and analyzed using frequent count and means. Findings of the study revealed that, there is a high perceived impact of OPAC on effective retrieval of information resources by postgraduate students in Benue State University, Makurdi. Finding also revealed that, postgraduate students in Benue State University, Makurdi utilize OPAC for various purposes such as to know the available resources in the university library, to locate books by author, title and subject, assists in obtaining books from the university library, among others. Finding also revealed the search strategies used by postgraduate students for effective retrieval of information resources in Benue State University Makurdi to include by author, title, subject and edition. The study further revealed the challenges hindering the use of OPAC for effective retrieval of information resources in Benue State University, Makurdi to include: lack of skilled library professionals to assists students, lack of orientation from library staff, lack of time to retrieve the vast information, slow internet connectivity speed, among others. Findings finally revealed some key strategies to enhance the use of OPAC for effective retrieval of information resources by postgraduate students in Benue State University, Makurdi which include: employment of skilled/competent library staff, need to design user-friendly OPAC template, improvement of internet connectivity speed, and organizing user education program to orientate postgraduate students on the use of OPAC, among others. Recommendations were also made based on the findings of the study.

Influence of Capacity Building and Attitude to Work Of librarians in Edo State Public Libraries, Nigeria

This study is on capacity building and attitude to work of librarians in Edo State public libraries, Nigeria. Investigation was on the capacity building programs in the Edo State public libraries, the levels of librarians’ awareness and participation in the programs, methods of building the capacity programs, influence on the librarians’ attitudes to work and factors militating against the programs. Descriptive survey design was adopted for the study and the entire population of 23 librarians were used. Results indicate that the capacity building programs in the library include computer literacy skills, online public access catalogue (OPAC), Internet collection management and general trends in librarianship. The methods used in building the capacity programs in the library include conferences, workshops/seminars, on-the-job and internally organized courses. Respondents indicated very low level of participation in the programs and a negative influence of the programs on their attitudes to work. The information-seeking behavior of aquatic science librarians in response to a query

When searching for information in response to a query, their own library’s online public access catalog (OPAC) and databases remain the most preferred resource for most aquatic science librarians. This preference does not vary regardless of age, gender, educational degree, position or designation, country classification, or type of library. While the Internet acts as a supplement to the library collection, whenever the requested information is not available at the library, librarians prefer Googling instead of looking at other sources. Other than aquatic science-specific open access repositories and databases, some of the librarians have identified Google Scholar, DOAJ, ResearchGate, and Academia, among many others as valuable resources that help them fulfill their clientele’s query.

OPAC functionality: Russian and foreign users’ requirements

The article considers the results of studying the Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) functionality, revealed by specialists of domestic and foreign libraries. The user survey results showed that OPAC of foreign libraries provides a more developed search system than the OPAC of domestic libraries. While a foreign user is able to interact with a catalogue in a natural language, domestic library OPAC operate mostly in a query-response mode. The problems were revealed which the user encounters during information search, connected with information perception, granting incomplete information on library collections, and absence of stability in work of servers. Often, there is no tooltip system. Users cannot understand the content of classification indices. It is difficult to find information about the library and access to OPAC on university websites, as this information is not always easily accessible. On the other hand, there is often a low level of user information culture. Most of them do not have the skills to write search queries and use logical operators. Maintaining OPAC in different automated library and information systems (ALIS), involving different options for combining, shortening, clarification of terms in information search, exacerbates these problems. After all, even advanced users may get incomplete search results assuming that library ALIS works similarly to other systems they are familiar with. It negatively affects the OPAC use efficiency. Ways of solving the revealed problems are suggested. Conducting regular training activities for OPAC users, development and improvement of tooltip system, ensuring integrated search in all library databases, providing information on classification information retrieval languages, conducting retrospective conversion of card catalogues, ensuring completeness and accuracy of provided bibliographic data, conducting systematic research to identify user requirements for the functionality of the electronic part of the reference and search apparatus will facilitate the process of searching and obtaining data about library information resources, improve the quality of OPAC information.

The Information and Communication Technology Infrastructure on University of Mines and Technology Campus and Its Impact on Library e-Resource Accessibility

Abstract
 The University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), Tarkwa, Ghana has a Local Area Network (LAN) infrastructure whose primary purpose is to facilitate research; teaching and learning; and information dissemination. The LAN infrastructure spans a maximum distance of 1.39 square-kilometers with an upload and download speed of 115 Mb/s and interconnects the administration block, faculties, library and halls of residence with high-speed ethernet links operating over a dedicated fiber optic backbone. The LAN infrastructure with connectivity to the internet impact operations in various sections of the University, notably, the University Library. The main purpose of the library is to interact with different information networks to make available e-resource materials to students, academic and non-academic staff. This can only be achieved over a dedicated LAN infrastructure. The introduction of Library Management Systems (Koha), Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) and the UMaT Space has improved library services such as document delivery, circulation and borrowing, amongst others. However, there exist a major challenge associated with library e-resources accessibility. This paper sought to investigate the factors hindering library e-resource accessibility for the purposes of improving research. Questionnaire was administered to respondents to solicit primary information while secondary information was obtained from published literature. 537 out of 855 participants responded to the questionnaire administered. 351 (65.36%) represented undergraduate students, 73 (13.60%) represented postgraduate students, 87 (16.20%), 21 (3.91%), 5 (0.93%) represented teaching, non-teaching and library staff respectively. The responses were analysed using simple tables and pie charts. Results from the study showed inadequate access points to enable users access these e-resource materials and lack of knowledge about the existence of these resources. The investigation further revealed the need for the library to embark on an information literacy drive for both students and academic staff. Various ways of improving e-resource accessibility was suggested.

The Transformative Changes of Syekh Yusuf Library of Alauddin State University of Makassar in Embracing Industrial 4.0

Abstract This thesis discusses the transformative changes of Syekh Yusuf Library of Alauddin State Islamic University of Makassar in embracing the industrial revolution 4.0. It aims to understand: 1) the transformative changes in the procurement department of Syekh Yusuf Library; 2) the transformative changes in the cataloguing department of Syekh Yusuf Library; 3) the transformative changes in the service department of Syekh Yusuf Library in embracing the industrial revolution 4.0. In investigating the issue, this research uses a descriptive qualitative method. It acquires the research data from the library director as well as the librarians through interviews, observation and documentation techniques. The research findings suggest that the procurement department of Syekh Yusuf Library is gradually implementing 4.0 based library system. The library has replaced the EliMSs software with teh SLIMS software. The cataloguing department is catching ap with the industrial revolution 4.0 by utilising manual and electronic DDC system on computers which have been installed with SLIMS software to make inventory, classifying, cataloguing, labelling, and stamping collections. In the service department, the industrial revolution 4.0 can be seen from some library services such as e-books, repository, professor’s golib, and Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC). This research hopes that the management of Alauddin State University of Makassar provide more funding for Syekh Yusuf Library to achieve the 4.d basis library goals through their programs. Catálogo online em bibliotecas públicas municipais do estado do Paraná

Introduão: No contexto das bibliotecas, sejam públicas ou de outros tipos, o catálogo sempre desempenhou importante papel nas tarefas de localizar, descrever e inventariar os conteúdos informacionais. Atualmente, com as amplas possibilidades de uso dos Online Public Access Catalogs, ou simplesmente OPACs, as bibliotecas podem utilizar essa ferramenta, não mais somente para recuperar, descrever ou inventariar os acervos, mas também como importante canal de divulgação e de comunicação com usuários reais e potenciais das bibliotecas. Entretanto, o contexto das bibliotecas públicas brasileiras impõe barreiras à adoção dos OPACs, visto que os custos de compra e manutenção de softwares voltados para essa finalidade não são considerados como prioritários para muitas dessas instituições. Objetivo: Esta pesquisa tem como objetivo investigar a situação das bibliotecas públicas municipais das maiores cidades do estado do Paraná, no que se refere a adoção ou não dos OPACs, observando ainda, quando o caso, quais softwares e funcionalidades existentes nos OPACs. Metodologia: Levando-se em consideração os objetivos propostos para esse trabalho, trata-se de uma pesquisa do tipo exploratória com abordagem tanto quantitativa quanto qualitativa. Resultados: Percebeu-se que metade das 20 cidades pesquisadas, ou seja, 10 cidades mantêm OPACs, ao passo que em outras 10 cidades não foi percebida a existência dessa ferramenta. Conclusões: Destaca-se de maneira positiva, o esforço conjunto liderado pela Biblioteca Pública do Paraná, que é um órgão estadual, no que se refere a oportunizar que algumas cidades paranaenses possam utilizar o software Pergamun para prover acesso público online aos catálogos de suas bibliotecas. Da mesma maneira que Londrina, Araucária, Arapongas e Cambé, cujas bibliotecas públicas municipais utilizam diferentes softwares para administrar seus OPACs. Todavia, a ausência dos OPACs em bibliotecas públicas de 10 das maiores cidades do Paraná, dentre elas a capital Curitiba, indica que há muito que avançar no sentido de oportunizar o uso dessa importante ferramenta.

Perceived Usefulness as Correlate of Undergraduate Students’ Patronage of Online Public Access Catalog in South-West Nigeria

This study investigated the correlation of perceived usefulness and patronage of the Online Public Access Catalogs (OPACs) by undergraduate students in universities in South-west Nigeria. The descriptive research design of the ex post facto was adopted using a sample of 1,527 selected from the total population of 239,048 undergraduate students in the universities. A questionnaire was used to collect the data. The results revealed that most undergraduate students patronized the OPAC two to three times a week. The findings show that the perceived usefulness of the OPAC had influence on its patronage by undergraduate students in the universities (r = 0.516**, N = 1333, P < 0.05). The study concluded that perceived usefulness influenced OPAC patronage by undergraduate students in the universities. The study, therefore, recommends that the importance of the OPAC should be emphasized in the library to enhance its perceived usefulness by the students in the university libraries.

PEMANFAATAN DIGITAL LIBRARY PADA PERPUSTAKAAN KAMPUNG PENDIDIKAN DESA KUAJANG KABUPATEN POLEWALI MANDAR

The lack of interest in reading nowadays is one of the factors in the decline of the nation's regeneration that loves literacy. The Education Village Library Group of Kuajang Village, Binuang District is one of the literacy movements established in Kuajang Village. This library is part of a project of teenagers and hamlet residents to build a literacy village to feel the equal distribution of education without having to abandon the value of local wisdom. In addition, it also aims to increase public interest in reading through the development of an appropriate technology as a solution, namely the digital library. The method of implementation is in accordance with the planning stages that have been prepared, namely the stages of activities that begin with the coordination and analysis of needs (Phase I), digital library application design (Phase II), application integration in the framework model (Phase III), and the use of systems in the field (Stage IV). The results show that the application development uses the OPAC (Online Public Access Catalog) model that can facilitate the user in the process of searching for books and the initial display of the digital library system in the form of a catalog. To optimize the use and utilization of this application, training is carried out to users and managers of the Education Village Library Group. In addition, periodic monitoring and assistance will be carried out to ensure the use of this system can be operated and the benefits are felt by the community

Undergraduates’ awareness, use and satisfaction with online public access catalogue (OPAC) of Benue State University Library, Makurdi, Nigeria

The purpose of this paper was to determine the extent towhich undergraduates atBenue State University are aware of the OPAC, the extent of usage, the level of satisfaction derived from the usage and challengesencountered in the use of OPAC in the universitylibrary. The study was guided by four specific objectives and four research questions. Descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. The populationconsisted of 9,864 undergraduate who registered with the library during 2017/2018 academic session. The sample sizewas 384 undergraduate students.Data was collected through a self-structured questionnaire.The data collected were analysed using frequency, percentages, mean and standard deviation. Thefindings revealedthat most of therespondents-232 (60.4%)-were not aware of OPAC services,only 152 (39.6%) respondents indicated theirawarenessof OPAC in retrievingneededlibrary materials. The study also showedthat the extent of OPAC use by undergraduateswas to a low extent and the students were dissatisfied with OPAC services; thattheundergraduates encountered several challenges which led to the low usage and dissatisfaction with the OPAC ofthe Benue State University Library. The study concludedthatthe creation of the OPACwas to facilitate retrieving information resources that had been acquired and organisedby the university library. However, poor awareness, improper orientation/training of studentsamong others have posedgreat challenge for its effective usage.The study therefore recommended that all the identified challenges be tackled by the university library management in order to enhance OPAC usage by thestudents.

Usage and awareness of OPAC by faculty of university library, University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad

OPAC is an interactive search module of an automated library management system. Any type of reading materials is searched directly from the managed database of the library. Catalogue is the face of the libraries and the Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) changed the conventional card catalogue structure. This paper presents and analysis online public access catalogue services provided by University library, university of agricultural sciences, Dharwad. It also discusses the purpose, frequency, awareness on use of OPAC. The result of the study shows that the faculties of UASD are aware about use of OPAC and regularly using to trace the library holdings by Title, Author, Subject, etc.

Undergraduates’awareness, utilization and satisfaction with online public access catalogue (OPAC) in public university libraries in Nasarawa State, Nigeria

The study investigated undergraduate’s awareness, utilization and satisfaction with online public access catalogue (OPAC) in selected University libraries in Nasarawa State, Nigeria. Four (4) objectives with corresponding research questions guided the study. The study adopted survey research design. The population of the study was 7,233 registered library users (undergraduates) in two (2) public universities in Nasarawa State, namely Federal University Lafia (FULAFIA) and Nasarawa State University, Keffi (NSUK). The sample size for the study was 379 drawn using Taro-Yemene’s formula for sample size determination. Proportionate stratified random sampling technique was used to select the sample of respondents from the two (2) universities under study (i.e.) FULAFIA with 150 and NSUK, 299 respectively. Questionnaire was used as instrument for data collection. A total of 379 questionnaire were distributed and 362 retrieved for analysis representing a percentage of 95.5%. Data was analyzed using frequency counts; mean scores and standard deviation. Findings of the study revealed that, undergraduates were highly aware of Online Public Access Catalogue in selected University Libraries in Nasarawa State. The finding also revealed, undergraduates in selected university libraries in Nasarawa State utilized OPAC to a little extent and students were not satisfied with the use of OPAC, hence their extent of satisfaction derived from the use of OPAC was little extent. Findings further revealed factors affecting use of OPAC by undergraduates in selected university libraries to include: library guide to explain how to use the OPAC is not available, unstable power supply, library staff not friendly, network/server problems, lack of computer systems, among others. Finally, conclusion and recommendations were made based on the findings of the study.

Use pattern of information sources and services by the job seekers at public libraries in Chennai City - a study

An attempt made in this study to know about the use pattern of information sources and services by the job seekers with the special reference of public libraries in Chennai city. Well structured questionnaires distributed randomly to the users of public libraries to investigate the aims of the study. The result shows that most of the respondents are male with the age group of 26 to 30 and have the educational qualification of a graduate. Majority of the respondents are having an average level (53.8%) of information literacy skills. Most of the respondents are moderately aware (55.7%) about the information sources and services of public libraries. Majority of the respondents (68.35%) visit the public libraries often. Job oriented books (83.54%) are often used by the respondents followed by 56.33% of job oriented periodicals, 35.44% of e-resources and 43.04% of encyclopedia and dictionary are used occasionally. 68.35% and 45.57% of the respondents use the reading room and notice board and new arrivals display service often. Most of the respondents (65.19%) and (58.23%) often use online public access catalogue or web OPAC and browse themselves in the stock area. Majority of the respondents (56.96%) satisfied with the information sources and services (63.29%) available in the public libraries. Most of the respondents agree that there are some problems like insufficient information sources (34.81%), inadequate services (34.18%), lack of search techniques (51.90%), infrastructure (47.47%) and library timings (40.51%).

Perception of Using ICT in Libraries: A Survey of Library Professionals Working in Government Degree Colleges of Kashmir (J&amp;K)-India

The application of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has put a huge impact on Information Industry and has revolutionized the way libraries acquire, process, organise, store and disseminate information. It has also caused a drastic change in different library services making it possible for the libraries to serve their clientele quickly, efficiently and distantly. Thus, in this digitally-driven environment, the role of library professionals with respect to serving their users has equally become more important and challenging. On one hand, the library professional should be digitally sound and techno-savvy, on the other hand, he must be able to efficiently use his ICT skills to serve the user community. The objective of the current study was to assess the perception of professional librarians working in the government-run Degree Colleges of Kashmir regarding the use of ICT. This research is based on 44 Govt Degree Colleges in Kashmir region of J&K state. Questionnaire method was used for data collection from the target population. The findings of the study revealed that SOUL, the library management software, and Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) had the highest impact on the role of professional librarians. The findings of the present study support a need for the implementation of ICTenabled systems in libraries for better management of library house-keeping operations and for providing better and efficient services to the users.

Slow Metadata

The Bibliographic Records in Libraries' Searchable Online Public Access Catalogs (Opac) Have Recently Taken on a New Role as a source of bibliographic data that can be aggregated, shared, circulated, manipulated, transformed, studied, and interpreted. Scholars' new awareness of library catalogs not just as aids to locating books and other materials but as sources of bibliographic information that researchers can manipulate and transform has inspired new scholarship on the history of the catalog and a new focus on how the catalog, in both its analog and digital forms, shapes bibliographic knowledge. Our Early Novels Dataset (END) project, for example, uses methods from book history, library science, and literary studies to think about the shape and history of the bibliographic metadata in the library catalog. Our research group's collective experiments with bibliographic metadata ask what happens when we look at the library catalog record not just as a utilitarian aid for searching or as an object of critique, but also as a work in progress with a literary character of its own. We ask what we can learn from the shape given to bibliographic information by the earlier catalogers whose records our project inherited and on whose expertise we draw. We also ask how the familiar languages of the library catalog record and the controlled bibliographic description might help make new forms of knowledge about books. And we press on the inevitable and generative tension between the particular perspective of the library catalogers who transform specific copies of physical books into bibliographic data and the informational fields dictated by machine-readable cataloging (MARC) descriptive standards.

Ekspansi Query Berbasis Semantik Pada Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC)

Digital library is an important system useful as the fulfillment of information needs library collection. The Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC) is a feature available in digital libraries that lets you browse library collections. In this research, semantic based query expansion system is developed. The goal is to improve search results to be more relevant. Domain used is information technology where book data obtained from online book site and book publishing sites as much as 500 data. The stage is to build ontology according to the data obtained. The formation of ontology refers to the data of UMM Informatics Engineering curriculum which refers to the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) Ontology is applied to find the connection between a user entered keyword. To support the search results used cosine similarity method. Cosine similarity is a method to calculate the similarity between search results with user keywords so as to generate search results ranking. Stages of testing the system using precision obtained a value of 65.6. This indicates that the system is capable enough to provide search results that are relevant to a user's search keyword.

Efektivitas Sistem Temu Kembali Informasi Online Public Catalog (OPAC) Dengan Tinjauan Precision Menggunakan Pendekatan Judul Dan Subjek Di Perpustakaan Universitas Muhammadiyah Bengkulu

Library as a centre for information resources is the backbone of the progress of an educational institution. Imbalance between the use of information retrieval system facilities advance search and a quick search of the catalogue are very common in a search. This study was aimed to know and to describe how the precision of information retrieval system by using title field and subject on OPAC (Online Public Access Catalog) ) at Muhammaddiyah University Library of Bengkulu is effective as an information retrieval system. This study was a quantitative descriptive study using analytical methods. The technique of data collection in this study was by using trace observation on the Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC). The study was carried out by using the title of the names of study programs and the subject to study program as the study sample a mounted to 206. Sample were taken by using purposive sampling techniques. The result of the study showed that search using advanced search features by using the section title of sociology subject obtained a precision marks of 0,98 while the use of advanced search features by using biology education subject obtainrd precision mark of 0,66. The use of quick search feature by using the sociology subjects get a precision marks of 0,98 while the use of quick search feature by using biology education subject obtained a precision marks of 0,99. The testing on the four search shows that the quick search and advanced search features in the title and subject are in the average range of 0,90 so it is said that the search system of OPAC at Muhammadiyah University Library of Bengkulu is effective as an information retrieval system.

Availability and Accessibility of Information Resources in an Academic Library: Pathway to Sustainable Development

This study was carried out to determine how availability and accessibility could bring about sustainable development in perceived academic performance of polytechnics’ students using Ibadan Polytechnic as a case study. Survey design was used with structured questionnaire and observation as instruments for data collection. The questionnaire was administered with the aid of a research assistant. From the findings, it was revealed that textbooks and dictionaries were readily available in the library while electronic books and journals were not accessible. The study also revealed lack of enough electronic resources, lack of enough computers to access Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC) and power failure as some of the challenges to availability and accessibility of library resources. Some recommendations were made based on the findings.
