CEBAF: A microscope for nucleI

The newest major construction project planned by the Energy Research Office of the US Department of Energy is CEBAF, the 4 GeV continuous electron beam accelerator facility dedicated to basic nuclear physics research. The status of the project, its physics program, and present plans for the initial complement of experimental equipment are briefly reviewed.

Ray trace calculations of ultrasonic fields

A computer code has been written to calculate realistic ultrasonic fields in solids. The program calculates the field due to a transducer coupled to the solid through either a fluid medium such as water or a solid medium such as a plastic shoe with a thin layer of fluid couplant. In this technique the transducer face is divided up into many small areas, each of which is assumed to be a source of spherical waves. A ray is traced from each source point, through the coupling medium and into the solid to the requested field point. The vector sum of the fields of each of the rays is then calculated to find the total incident field at that point for a particular frequency. The calculations have been compared to the fields predicted by the models of Thompson and Gray [R. B. Thompson and T. A. Gray, “Analytic Diffraction Corrections to Ultrasonic Scattering Measurements,” in Review of Progress in QNDE 2, edited by D. O. Thompson and D. E. Chimenti (Plenum, New York, 1983), pp. 567–586] and Thompson and Lopes [R. B. Thompson and E. F. Lopes, “The Effects of Focusing and Refraction on Gaussian Ultrasonic Beams,” J. Nondestruct. The electronic structures of adducts of lanthanide(III) tricyclopentadienides

Adducts of the rare earth tricyclopentadienides (Cp 3Pr·add) were first described by Birmingham and Wilkinson in 1954. Since then their chemistry and geometrical structures have been extensively studied. Although excellent optical spectra were reported by Pappalardo et. al. at the end of the sixties, nothing is known about their electronic structures. The main reason for this is that they don't crystallize into single crystals which are suitable for optical measurements. Therefore they can only be studied in solution and the additional information obtained from polarized optical single crystal measurements is missing. In solution comparable information may be obtained by performing magnetic circular dichroism measurements. By studying the cold and hot MCD transitions, 14 crystal field levels of Cp 3Pr·CNC 6H 11 could be identified. After fitting this truncated crystal field splitting pattern, 36 bands in the low temperature absorption spectrum could be assigned. By fitting the energies of these 36 levels, a refined set of parameters was obtained. On the basis of this parameter set the low temperature absorption spectra of the adduct Cp 3Nd·MeTHF could also be explained. NEEDS: Nuclear Energy Electrical Demand Simulation

A computer model is presented called NEEDS — an acro nym for Nuclear Energy Electrical Demand Simulation- which can simuZate the nuclear sector of the United States electric power economy. The code can forecast the impact of various nuclear-reactor growth patterns over the next fifty years in terms of economics, resource utilization, and the requirements for a supporting fuel-cycle industry. NEEDS was developed for the Office of Energy Research and Development Policy of the National Science Foundation as a tool to help evaluate alternative fission reactor develop ment strategies involving advanced reactor concepts, including advanced high-temperature gas-cooled reac tor (HTGR) systems, the gas-cooled fast reactor (GCFR), the molten-salt breeder reactor (MSBR), the Zight-raater breeder reactor (LWBR), and the heavy- water reactor (HWR) . The objectives of the study were to calculate the impacts, benefits, and require ments of various nuclear growth patterns and to determine the sensitivity of these measures to input parameters which are dominating, uncertain, or sub ject to wide variations. The NEEDS model is currently being used to answer such questions as: What benefits would the United States realize by developing the MSBR, the GCFR, or the LWBR as alternatives to the LWR/HTGR/LMFBR power economy? What are the potential impacts on enrich ment requirements and uranium demand of changing per cent tails assay? How does a power economy based upon a thorium-U233 fuel cycle compare with a pluto nium economy? The model has been used to relate the research-and-development requirements for developing an advanced reactor concept to the availability of the reactor system and its impact on the nuclear economy. In summary, the NEEDS model was developed to study questions of national nuclear policy using a simple modeling approach and minimal input data requirements. The model can forecast the impact of nuclear power development under selected national policy options and potential growth scenarios.
