Biosynthesis Optimization of Antibacterial-Magnetic Iron Oxide Nanoparticles from Bacillus megaterium.

The occurrence of antibiotic resistance on common bacterial agents and the need to use new generations of antibiotics have led to the use of various strategies for production. Taking inspiration from nature, using bio-imitation patterns, in addition to the low cost of production, is advantageous and highly accurate. In this research, we were able to control the temperature, shake, and synthesis time of the synthesis conditions of Bacillus megaterium bacteria as a model for the synthesis of magnetic iron nanoparticles and optimize the ratio of reducing salt to bacterial regenerating agents as well as the concentration of salt to create iron oxide nanoparticles with more favorable properties and produced with more antibacterial properties. Bacterial growth was investigated by changing the incubation times of pre-culture and overnight culture in the range of the logarithmic phase. The synthesis time, salt ratio, and concentration were optimized to achieve the size, charge, colloidal stability, and magnetic and antibacterial properties of nanoparticles. The amount of the effective substance produced by the bacteria was selected by measuring the amount of the active substance synthesized using the free radical reduction (DPPH) method. With the help of DPPH, the duration of the synthesis was determined to be one week. Characterizations such as UV-vis spectroscopy, FTIR, FESEM, X-ray, and scattering optical dynamics were performed and showed that the nanoparticles synthesized with a salt concentration of 80mM and a bacterial suspension to salt ratio of 2:1 are smaller in size and have a light scattering index, a PDI index close to 0.1, and a greater amount of reducing salt used in the reaction during one week compared to other samples. Moreover, they had more antibacterial properties than the concentration of 100mM. As a result, better characteristics and more antibacterial properties than common antibiotics were created on E. coli and Bacillus cereus.

Antibacterial therapy for kidney pathology of small pets

The article considers etiological factors, clinical manifestations, laboratory and instrumental methods for diagnosing kidney pathology, which requires the use of antibacterial drugs – pyelonephritis. However, this pathology can be difficult to diagnose and not every antibacterial drug is suitable for its treatment. The main ways of kidney damage by bacterial infection in small domestic animals are ascending infection and hematogenous introduction, when pathogenic microorganisms enter the kidneys along with the bloodstream. The article provides predisposing factors leading to the development of pyelonephritis. Pyelonephritis has several types of course. The acute form of the disease is most easily diagnosed due to the vivid clinical signs and pronounced changes in blood, urine, and kidney sonography tests. Whereas the chronic form and latent course may be overlooked due to the nonspecific clinical picture. In the treatment of pyelonephritis, the occurrence of antibiotic resistance in bacteria can be fatal for the patient, because if it is impossible to eliminate infection in the kidneys, the development of renal failure is inevitable, leading to all manifestations of uremia, anemia and other changes that occur with impaired renal function. To prevent the development of antibiotic resistance, it is extremely important to make a final diagnosis through bacteriological urine culture, but pyelonephritis is a pathology that requires a comprehensive diagnostic approach and, if suspected, it is advisable to start etiological treatment immediately, correctly choosing an antibiotic. Not every antibacterial drug is suitable for the treatment of pyelonephritis. For example, one of the first-line drugs of choice in the treatment of urinary tract infection (UTI), amoxicillin with clavulanic acid does not penetrate the renal parenchyma. The group of choice for the treatment of bacterial inflammation of the kidneys are fluoroquinolones, but not every drug from this group is suitable for treatment in animals and there are certain restrictions in their use in the case of puppies, kittens, as well as in cats as a species, therefore, the selection of an antibiotic should be carried out individually in each clinical case, taking into account the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of the drug, the result of urine sampling and other studies, as well as the physiological characteristics of the patient.

Importation trends in antibiotics for veterinary use in Rwanda: A retrospective study between 2019 and 2021.

Estimating antibiotic consumption in animals is fundamental to guiding decision-making and research on controlling the emergence and spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria in humans, animals, and the environment. This study aimed to establish importation trends of antibiotics for veterinary use in Rwanda between 2019 and 2021. Data was collected from the Rwanda Food and Drugs Authority's database. Quantities of imported antibiotic active ingredients were computed using the information extracted from the issued import licenses. These quantities were subsequently adjusted per animal biomass. In total, 35,291.4 kg of antibiotics were imported into Rwanda between 2019 and 2021, with an annual mean of 11,763.8 ± 1,486.9 kg. The adjustment of imported quantities of antibiotics per animal biomass revealed that 29.1 mg/kg, 24.3 mg/kg, and 30.3 mg/kg were imported in 2019, 2020, and 2021 respectively. A slight but not statistically significant decline in antibiotic importation was noted in 2020 (p-value = 0.547). Most of the imported antibiotics were indicated to be used in food-producing animals (35,253.8 kg or 99.9% of the imported antibiotics). Tetracyclines (17,768.6 kg or 50.3%), followed by sulfonamides (7,865.0 kg or 22.3%) and aminoglycosides (4,071.1 kg or 11.5%), were the most imported antibiotics over the studied period. It was noted that 78.9% of the imported antibiotics were categorized as highly important antimicrobials for human medicine. This study established a generalized overview of the importation of antibiotics for veterinary use in Rwanda. These results can serve as guidance for the control of antibiotic misuse. They can be used to make a correlation between antibiotic importation, antibiotic consumption, and the occurrence of antibiotic resistance in the country.

Healthcare commissioners' experience with antibiotic resistance during the COVID-19 pandemic in Saudi Arabia: a qualitative study.

The occurrence of antibiotic resistance (AR) has become a critical issue during the Novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. This study explores the experiences of healthcare commissioners with AR during the COVID-19 pandemic, identifies challenges, and provides recommendations for combating AR during pandemics. This qualitative study was multi-centered and used a phenomenological approach. Semi-structured interviews were conducted between December 2022 and January 2023 among 11 health commissioners using video calls. Seven themes emerged from the data, including knowledge of AR and its consequences, the antibiotic prescription system, the future of AR and potential contributory factors, the impact of COVID-19 on AR and their relationship, the experience of AR during the COVID-19 pandemic in healthcare facilities, barriers that prevent the misuse of antibiotics during pandemics, and recommendations regarding antibiotic resistance during pandemics. The findings of this study could be used to inform policy and practice for government healthcare workers (HCWs) and the public. Furthermore, this study identified the main challenges of AR during the pandemic, and the recommendations of health commissioners were provided accordingly. Such recommendations could be beneficial on a national and international scale to reduce the impact of future pandemics on AR. Comparative analysis of Streptococcus agalactiae S03 and S07 isolated from Schizothorax spp. with different antibiotic resistance and virulence

Streptococcus agalactiae (GBS) is an important Gram-positive pathogen of fish aquaculture worldwide. In this study, we performed a comparative analysis of GBS S03 (serotype III) and S07 (serotype Ia) isolated from Schizothorax spp.. We explored the association between phenotypic antibiotic resistance, virulence, and genomic characteristics. Antimicrobial sensitivity tests on 12 common antibiotics using the disc diffusion method revealed that the GBS S03 resisted seven antibiotics, while GBS S07 showed sensitivity to eleven antibiotics. Pathogenicity analysis demonstrated greater virulence of GBS S07 than S03. Then, the occurrence of antibiotic resistance and virulence genes were identified using the whole-genome sequence (WGS) of GBS S03 and GBS S07. Besides just GBS S03 had gyrA and parC gene mutations, there were mefE, tetO, lnuB, lsaE, APH3’, and sat-4 resistance genes present only in GBS S03 genome. In addition to 51 virulence genes in both GBS S03 and S07 genomes, GBS S07 carried virulence genes associated with invasion, such as SAN_1519, rfbA and cylE genes. There was complete concordance between genotypic evidence and phenotypic characteristics. Virulence factors and phylogenetic analysis showed that GBS S03 and human sources shared an extremely close evolutionary relationship. Our findings also provide important proof for using WGS as an effective tool for phenotypic predictions of GBS.

The fate of sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim in a micro-aerated anaerobic membrane bioreactor and the occurrence of antibiotic resistance in the permeate.

This study investigates the effects, conversions, and resistance induction, following the addition of 150 μg·L-1 of two antibiotics, sulfamethoxazole (SMX) and trimethoprim (TMP), in a laboratory-scale micro-aerated anaerobic membrane bioreactor (MA-AnMBR). TMP and SMX were removed at 97 and 86%, indicating that micro-aeration did not hamper their removal. These antibiotics only affected the pH and biogas composition of the process, with a significant change in pH from 7.8 to 7.5, and a decrease in biogas methane content from 84 to 78%. TMP was rapidly adsorbed onto the sludge and subsequently degraded during the long solids retention time of 27 days. SMX adsorption was minimal, but the applied hydraulic retention time of 2.6 days was sufficiently long to biodegrade SMX. The levels of three antibiotic-resistant genes (ARGs) (sul1, sul2, and dfrA1) and one mobile genetic element biomarker (intI1) were analyzed by qPCR. Additions of the antibiotics increased the relative abundances of all ARGs and intI1 in the MA-AnMBR sludge, with the sul2 gene folding 15 times after 310 days of operation. The MA-AnMBR was able to reduce the concentration of antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) in the permeate by 3 log.

Analysis of Escherichia coli Extended-Spectrum Beta-Lactamase ESBL Bacteria in Chicken Farm Waste in Cipondoh, Tangerang City

Antibiotics are a class of drugs that stop biochemical processes in an organism, stop the growth of bacteria, and naturally create an immune system for the body. The result of using the wrong antibiotics is the occurrence of antibiotic resistance, which means that microorganisms can survive against antibiotics given later. The problem of antibiotic resistance can be spread through livestock, one of which is chicken, one of the most important benefits of chicken farming. In this regard, research was conducted on analysing the number of E. coli bacteria in chicken farms in the Cipondoh area, Tangerang City. E. coli from livestock waste is one of the microorganisms that can combine with ESBL causing antibiotic resistance. Antibiotic resistance is dangerous if it occurs in humans who consume livestock products and spreads to the environment through the waste discharged into the environment. Antibiotic resistance will cause antibiotics to be unable to prevent disease anymore so that diseases are immune and already resistant to antibiotics. Research on the presence of ESBL bacteria in E. coli present in livestock waste needs to be studied further so that the incidence of antibiotic resistance can be prevented and can be followed up as early as possible so that antibiotic resistance or immunity to antibiotics can be prevented as soon as possible and does not become a threat and new epidemics for humankind in the future and humans do not abuse the use of antibiotics against livestock.

Occurrence of Antibiotic Resistance in Salmonella Serotypes Isolated from Environment, Humans, Animals, and Animal Products in Morocco: A Systematic Review

Several studies have been carried out in Morocco on Salmonella contamination in humans, domestic and wild animals, food products, and the environment. This bacterial genus is responsible for several infections and foodborne illnesses worldwide. The epidemiological situation of contamination by Salmonella is worsened by the development of antibiotic resistance to the main antibiotics used in human and veterinary medicine. The purpose of this study was to review the leading research carried out in this field, emphasizing the antibiotic resistance of this bacterium to antibiotics in humans and animals. Although some studies could not demonstrate the presence of Salmonella in the environments studied, the prevalence of contamination remained relatively high in humans, animals, food products, and the environment. The most critical contaminations were observed in poultry farms and poultry meat. Salmonella causes 42.8% of food poisoning cases in Morocco. It is the second most common cause of poisoning after pesticide poisoning. Morocco ranks first in the Middle East and North Africa for human salmonellosis, with a prevalence of 17.9% (1997-2012). Its prevalence in food products, especially those of animal origin, is very high and could reach 52.9% in turkey meat. Food products have been studied more for their contamination by Salmonella species. Meat products accounted for 17.35% of food poisoning cases. This study revealed that the isolation rate of Salmonella from food products of animal origin was dominated by isolations from meat products, with prevalence rates of 41.76 % from red meat and meat products and 25.88% from poultry meat, followed by prevalence rates of 12.44 % from fish products and 11.80 % from eggs. On the coast of Agadir, the incidence rates of Salmonella were 6.8% and 4.1% in sediment and seawater, respectively. This occurrence was 2.38% in the surface waters of Oued Khoumane. The development of resistance, particularly multi-resistance to antibiotics of therapeutic interest in both humans and animals, is alarming, especially with the ease of transmission of the bacterium to humans and facilitates its dissemination. Research findings indicated that 93.02% of isolates of Salmonella from humans, 79.37% of the strains isolated from poultry, and 46.27% of isolates from food products were resistant to at least one antibiotic.

Incidence and Antibiogram of Uropathogens Isolated from Pregnant Women Attending Antenatal Clinic in a Public Hospitalin Yola, Adamawa State, Nigeria

Urinary tract infection during pregnancy including asymptomatic bacteriuria has been associated with some adverse outcomes for the mother and foetus. Studies have shown that pregnant women with urinary tract infections have a significantly higher rate of intra-uterine growth restriction, pre-eclampsia, caesarean and pre-term deliveries. This study was undertaken to determine the occurrence, distribution and antibacterial susceptibility pattern of uropathogens among pregnant women attending antenatal clinic in a public hospital in Yola. A total of 200 clean catch mid-stream urine samples were collected from pregnant women and inoculated on cysteine lactose electrolyte deficient agar for bacterial count and isolation of uropathogens. The isolates were also screened for ability to form biofilms using Congo Red Agar method and antibiotic susceptibility test was done on the isolates using agar disk diffusion method. The incidence of UTI among the pregnant women was found to be 90%. The predominant uropathogens were E. coli (46.0%), S. aureus (20.0%) and Klebsiella pneumoniae (17.0%) while the least occurring uropathogen was Proteus sp. (2.0%). Women in the third and first trimester of pregnancy had the highest occurrence of UTI. A total of 47.0% of the isolates produced biofilm in vitro with the highest biofilm production observed among Proteus sp. (75.0%) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (60.0%) isolates. The occurrence of antibiotic resistance among the isolates was high, with greater susceptibility observed to quinolone and third generation cephalosporin. The E. coli isolates demonstrated varying levels of resistance to all the antibiotics tested. Because of the gravity of problems of UTI in pregnancy and that 9 in 10 pregnant women from this study have symptomatic or asymptomatic infection, it is concluded that pregnant women should be screened for urinary tract infection during antenatal visits especially during the first and third trimesters of pregnancy.

Antibiotic resistance isdisseminated by antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) which are carried by antibiotic resistancebacteria (ARBs). Lotic ecosystems like rivers which has flowing water can spread ARGs fromone location to another. Such dispersion of ARGs can also move through food chains and foodwebs making the spread of antibiotic resistance more complex and widespread. Detection ofthese ARGs is important for understanding the origin and pathways of antibiotic resistancein our waterways. Both culturing and non-culturing methods can be used for detection ofthese ARGs. Overall, understanding the sources, assessing the presence, and determining thedissemination of antibiotic resistance is important for us to understand the level of antibioticpollution in our waterbodies.

Occurrence, antimicrobial resistance, and potential zoonosis risk of avian pathogenic Escherichia coli in Indonesia: A review

Avian pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC) causes avian colibacillosis or colibacillosis and is a major endemic disease of poultry worldwide, including in Indonesia. It is characterized by a black proventriculus and can damage other organs, leading to pericarditis, perihepatitis, water sacculitis, mesenteritis, and omphalitis. The APEC strain is one of the six main sub-pathotypes of the extraintestinal pathogenic E. coli (ExPEC) pathotype. The relationship between APEC and infection in humans is questionable. The previous studies have suggested poultry products, including meat and eggs, as a potential source of infection for the transmission of ExPEC disease to humans. Due to the absence of reporting of disease incidents and the lack of literature updates on this disease, it seems as if APEC does not exist in Indonesia. Since bacterial resistance is a growing problem in Indonesia, and globally, the World Health Organization issued a statement regarding the importance of assessing related factors and their control strategies. Antimicrobial resistance, especially multidrug resistance, presents a challenge when treating infectious diseases. In Indonesia, the incidence of resistance to several antimicrobials in cases of avian colibacillosis is high. In addition, avian and human extraintestinal E. coli infections present a potential zoonotic risk. Furthermore, a relationship exists between antibiotic resistance to foodborne bacteria and the occurrence of antibiotic resistance in humans, so the use of antibiotics in the poultry industry must be controlled. Therefore, the One Health strategy should be implemented to prevent the overuse or misuse of antibiotics in the poultry industry. This review aimed to increase awareness of people who are at risk of getting Avian pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC) from poultry by controlling the spread of APEC by maintaining a clean environment and hygienic personnel in poultry farms.

Studies Regarding the Detection of Sulfonamide Residues and Evaluation of the Level of Contamination in Poultry Meat

The excessive or uncontrolled use of antibiotics in poultry farming can lead to contaminated food products. Subsequently, the human consumption of products contaminated with these substances increases the global phenomenon of antibiotic resistance. The aim of this study was to develop and validate a high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method suitable for the determination of sulfonamide residues in poultry meat and to check the presence of residues in random samples. The level of antimicrobial resistance was identified in order to evaluate the current stage and to estimate the tendency of this phenomenon. The HPLC method validation was performed in accordance with Commission Regulation (EC) No 657/2002 of 14 August 2002 Samples of fresh meat collected from a poultry slaughterhouse were analysed using the validated method in order to reveal the level of contamination. The data from EFSA was collected and analysed following the antimicrobial resistance for isolates of Salmonella spp., E. coli and Campylobacter spp. The method had good selectivity, linearity (R2 ≥ 0.99), precision (<6%), recoverybetween 97.7-109.6% and low limits of detection (LOD) and quantification (LOQ) Sulfaquinoxaline residues were present in 2 samples and the level of contamination did not exceed the Maximum Residue Level (31.98 ± 5.18 µg/kg and 23.70 ± 3.84 µg/kg). The analysis of data from EFSA highlighted the general presence of antimicrobial resistance especially for the following antibiotics: ciprofloxacin, tetracycline, nalidixic acid, ampicillin, sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim. The present study brings a contribution to the process of stopping antibiotic resistance through new methods of monitorization of sulfonamide residues. The statistical data shows that there is a direct correlation between the market availability of antibiotics used in poultry farming and the occurrence of antibiotic resistance.

Antimicrobial resistance of Streptococcus spp. and Staphylococcus spp. isolated from respiratory tract of race horses in Türkiye

As with other animal species, one of the most important challenges encountered in race horse breeding is performance and economic losses caused by infectious diseases. Antibiotics are the most important and common drugs used for protection against infectious diseases. Recently with the occurrence of antibiotic resistance, serious complications have emerged in terms of human and animal health. For this reason, to determine antibiotic resistance in bacteria, many research studies have been carried out in the world and Türkiye. However, in Türkiye no comprehensive study has yet been conducted on antibiotic resistance in race horses. Within the scope of this study, it was aimed to investigate antibacterial susceptibility and resistance in Streptococcus spp. and Staphylococcus spp. agents identified through isolation from tracheal aspiration fluid samples taken from thoroughbred horses brought to 75. Yıl Hippodrome Hospital. Disk Diffusion and Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) tests were used to determine antibacterial susceptibility. Susceptibility profiles of identified strains against some penicillin, cephalosporin, aminoglycoside, tetracycline, rifamycin and carbapenem group antibacterial drugs were determined. Also, it has been determined that 1 Streptococcus spp. and 10 Staphylococcus spp. agents are sensitive to amoxicillin and ampicillin-sulbactam; moderately sensitive to penicillin and amikacin and resistant to trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, kanamycin, gentamicin, enrofloxacin and rifampin.

Quantification of antibiotic resistance genes in Siberian sturgeons (Acipenser baerii) fed Hermetia illucens-based diet

Siberian sturgeon (Acipenser baerii) represents a high-value fish farmed for obtaining high-priced food. In this study, the occurrence of antibiotic resistance (AR) genes encoding for resistance to antimicrobials administered in clinical practice, as aminoglycosides, β-lactams, macrolide-lincosamide-streptogramin B, tetracyclines, and vancomycin, were studied in the gut of sturgeons fed a diet containing 50% Hermetia illucens larvae by qPCR assays. Erm(A), erm(B), erm(C), tet(K), tet(M), tet(S), and tet(W) were detected in all samples. Feed and guts of sturgeons at beginning of rearing were negative for tet(O), vanA, vanB, mecA, and aac-aph. BlaZ was exclusively detected in control diet. The highest copy numbers were observed for tet(M), tet(K) and tet(S) in control diet. The copy numbers of most of the genes were higher in control diet than in diet containing 50% insect. Despite the differences in the gene copy numbers in control or insect-based diet, the results for AR genes contained in the guts of fish highlighted that, at 50% substitution level, no effect of the insect-based diet on the AR genes seems to occur in the experimental sturgeons at the end of rearing.

Insilico Study and Analysis Antibacterial Activity of Beta-glucan against Beta-Lactamase and Protein Binding Penicillin-2A

Beta-lactamase is an enzyme protein that plays a role in the occurrence of antibiotic resistance against Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) bacteria. This study aims to investigate interactions that occur beta-glucan with Beta-lactamase enzymes and Protein Binding Penicillin-2a (PBP-2a). In this study, the bioinformatics approach or in-silico method was conducted to determine the molecular interactions that occurred computationally. The protein used was Beta-lactamase protein (4ooy), and Protein Binding Penicillin-2a (6h50) obtained from the Protein Data Bank. Beta-glucan as ligand obtained from the PubChem web server. Protein stabilization was carried out to adjust to the body's physiology, carried out using Pymol by removing water atoms and adding hydrogen atoms. Pharma expert web server and Pyrex were used to modulate the interaction between ligand and enzyme. We were analyzed molecular interactions visualization on the molecular complexes generated by docking simulations using the Discovery Studio software. The results showed that beta-glucan has high activity as an antibiotic against Beta-lactamase and PBP-2a. The binding affinity interaction that occurs between Beta-glucan and Beta-lactamase complex interaction was -11.1 kcal/mol, while Beta-glucan and BPP-2a was -8.5 kcal/mol. The interaction bond Beta-glucan and Beta-lactamase was higher than 2s, 5r) -1-Formyl-5 - [(Sulfooxy) amino] piperidine-2-Carboxamid as control ligand. Beta-glucan was predicted to have strong antibacterial properties. However, exploration of beta-glucan compounds and further research to determine the antibacterial effect of beta-glucan against MRSA bacteria.

Occurrence of Antibiotic Resistance in the Mediterranean Sea.

Seawater could be considered a reservoir of antibiotic-resistant bacteria and antibiotic resistance genes. In this communication, we evaluated the presence of bacterial strains in seawater collected from different coasts of Sicily by combining microbiological and molecular methods. Specifically, we isolated viable bacteria that were tested for their antibiotic resistance profile and detected both antibiotic and heavy metal resistance genes. Both antibiotic-resistant Gram-negative bacteria, Vibrio and Aeromonas, and specific antibiotic resistance genes were found in the seawater samples. Alarming levels of resistance were determined towards cefazolin, streptomycin, amoxicillin/clavulanic acid, ceftriaxone, and sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim, and mainly genes conferring resistance to β-lactamic and sulfonamide antibiotics were detected. This survey, on the one hand, presents a picture of the actual situation, showing the pollution status of the Tyrrhenian coast of Sicily, and, on the other hand, can be considered as a baseline to be used as a reference time for future analysis.

Prevalence of Antibiotic Resistance in Salmonella Serotypes Concurrently Isolated from the Environment, Animals, and Humans in South Africa: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

One of the main global concerns is the usage and spread of antibiotic resistant Salmonella serovars. The animals, humans, and environmental components interact and contribute to the rapid emergence and spread of antimicrobial resistance, directly or indirectly. Therefore, this study aimed to determine antibiotic resistance (AR) profiles of Salmonella serotypes isolated from the environment, animals, and humans in South Africa by a systematic review and meta-analysis. The preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses (PRISMA) guidelines were followed to search four databases for studies published from 1980 to 2021, that reported the antibiotic resistance profiles of Salmonella serotypes isolated in South Africa. The AR was screened from 2930 Salmonella serotypes which were isolated from 6842 samples. The Western Cape province had high pooled prevalence estimates (PPE) of Salmonella isolates with AR profiles followed by North West, Gauteng, and Eastern Cape with 94.3%, 75.4%, 59.4%, and 46.2%, respectively. The high PPE and heterogeneity were observed from environmental samples [69.6 (95% CI: 41.7−88.3), Q = 303.643, I2 = 98.353, Q-P = 0.045], animals [41.9 (95% CI: 18.5–69.5), Q = 637.355, I2 = 98.745, Q-P = 0.577], as well as animals/environment [95.9 (95% CI: 5.4−100), Q = 55.253, I2 = 96.380, Q-P = 0.300]. The majority of the salmonella isolates were resistant to sulphonamides (92.0%), enrofloxacin and erythromycin (89.3%), oxytetracycline (77.4%), imipenem (72.6%), tetracycline (67.4%), as well as trimethoprim (52.2%), among the environment, animals, and humans. The level of multidrug-resistance recorded for Salmonella isolates was 28.5% in this review. This study has highlighted the occurrence of AR by Salmonella isolates from animals, humans, and environmental samples in South Africa and this calls for a consolidated “One Health” approach for antimicrobial resistance epidemiological research, as well as the formulation of necessary intervention measures to prevent further spread.

Molecular Docking Approach of Viscosin as Antibacterial for Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus Aureus Via β-Lactamase Inhibitor Mechanism

Background: β-lactamase is an enzyme that plays a role in the occurrence of antibiotic resistance against Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) bacteria. Viscosin is a lipopeptide biosurfactant produced by the Pseudomonas group bacteria. A study states that Viscosin has strong antibacterial properties.Aims: This study aims to determine the interactions that occur with Viscosin and β-lactamase enzymes.Methods: Researchers used the in-silico method to determine the molecular interactions that occurred computationally. The protein used was β-lactamase protein obtained from the Protein Data Bank and Viscosin ligand obtained from the PubChem web server, and we used native ligands as control. Pharma expert web server and Pyrx, Pymol, and Discovery Studio software were used in this research.Results: The results showed that Viscosin has high activity as an antibiotic and is predicted to be a membrane integrity antagonist. The binding affinity interaction that occurs between Viscosin-β-lactamase is -7.3 kcal/mol. The affinity is lower than the control.Conclusion: Viscosin was predicted to have strong antibacterial properties, but the binding interaction was lower than the control. However, exploration of Viscosin compounds and further research to determine the antibacterial effect of Viscosin against MRSA and other bacteria is needed to against antibiotic resistance.
