The 650 nm photodissociation of gas-phase (CH 3) 2 ClCNO (2-chloro-2-nitrosopropane) is studied by measuring the energy distribution in the nitric oxide fragment. The rotational distribution is similar to those previously measured for other nitrosoalkanes Translational distributions were measured in coincidence with single NO ratational states and show clear bimodality and a positive correlation between the rotational energy of the NO photoproduct and the relative translational energy of the recoiling photofragments. Previously applied statistical models for photofragment excitation in nitrosoalkanes fail to predict the translational energy distribution. The observed energy distributions are consistent with dissociation on multiple electronic potential energy surfaces.
