Preparation and performance study of waste plastic blended ultrafiltration membrane

Waste plastic packaging bags (rPVC) and waste milk tea straws (rPLA) were used as membrane materials to prepare ultrafiltration (UF) membranes by the non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) method. The study aimed to investigate the influence of various factors, including different rPVC contents (10 wt%-20 wt%), membrane fractions (rPVC/rPLA), additive fractions (Pluronic F-127/PVP-K30), and different additive contents (0.5 wt%-3.0 wt%), on the performance of the membranes. The permeability, morphology, hydrophilicity, chemical composition, thermal stability, and antifouling properties of the blended UF membranes were thoroughly investigated. The experimental results revealed that the presence of rPLA and Pluronic F-127 increased the porosity, water absorption, pore size, and hydrophilicity of the blended UF membranes. Furthermore, the introduction of rPLA enhanced the thermal stability of the blended UF membranes. Additionally, the incorporation of Pluronic F-127 further improved the overall performance of the blended UF membranes. Specifically, it was found that the blended UF membranes achieved a pure water flux (PWF) of 192.50 L·m−2·h−1, while maintaining a bovine serum albumin (BSA) rejection rate of 95.20%. These results were obtained using a content ratio of rPVC/rPLA (90/10) at 14 wt% and an additive content of Pluronic F-127 at 2.5 wt%. By comparing with the blended UF membranes without introducing additives into the casting solution, the roughness (Ra) was reduced by 40.3%, the water contact angle (WCA) was reduced by 7.5%, the flux recovery rate (FRR) was increased by 80.5%, and the fouling resistance was enhanced.

Highly stable, antibacterial and antiviral composites films via improved non-solvent induced phase separation for textile application

Textile composites are ubiquitous in daily life and are one of the main ways in which bacteria and viruses spread. Highly effective antibacterial and antiviral flexible composites are effective for reducing microbe transmission. Herein, we reported an improved nonsolvent-induced phase separation method for the fabrication of flexible textile composites. Cu2O/polyurethane (Cu2OPU) composite films containing antibacterial and antiviral coatings were constructed using a Cu2O-polyvinyl butyral coagulation bath and binary solvent mixtures, yielding a composite that had excellent mechanical properties and stability and the components did not leach out. The as-prepared Cu2OPU composite films exhibited strong antibacterial and antiviral activity against Staphylococcus aureus and the H1N1 virus (above 99.99 % inactivation ratio). What’s more, Cu2OPU has excellent mechanical and environmental stability owing to the strong interfacial adhesion of Cu2O with the polymer matrix. Furthermore, it can withstand multiple washes and be suitable for daily use. Cu2OPU may be sustainably produced with great scalability, which may meet public, home, and textile applications.

Facile fabrication of regenerated cellulose-based separators for high-performance lithium-ion batteries by regulating degrees of polymerization

Cellulose-based separators have great application prospects in the field of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to their excellent wettability and thermal stability. However, most current cellulose-based separators come from high-cost nanocellulose and bacterial cellulose. Herein, regenerated cellulose (RC) separators were prepared from dissolving pulp with different degrees of polymerization (DPs) by using the NaOH/urea/thiourea dissolution system as well as a nonsolvent-induced phase separation method. The results showed that the DP of cellulose had a significant influence on the mechanical properties, pore structure, and electrochemical properties of the resultant RC separator. An appropriate increase in the DP could improve the mechanical strength, porosity, and ionic conductivity of the separator. The RC separator with a DP of 599 exhibited the best performance with a porosity of 56.1 %, an average pore size of 305 nm, an electrolyte uptake of 339 %, a tensile strength of 38.3 MPa, and an ionic conductivity of 1.88 mS·cm−1. The lithium-ion battery prepared with the optimal RC separator had a specific capacity of 156.55 mAh/g for 100 cycles at a current density of 0.5 C and a coulombic efficiency of more than 96 %, which was a clear advantage over the commercially available Celgard2400 and cellulose separators. This work makes contributions to the development of high-performance LIBs separators from cellulose.

Structurally stable copolymer ultrafiltration membranes prepared via vinyl chloride suspension copolymerization and tannic acid in-situ modification integration

Polyvinyl chloride ultrafiltration membranes, widely used in various industries, are hindered by their high susceptibility to contamination. To address this concern, researchers have investigated diverse modification methods, encompassing surface modification and physical blending. Although surface modification provides stability, but it is intricate, expensive, and may result in pore clogging. Physical blending is a simpler approach but lacks durability and stability. Tannic acid (TA), a natural compound, has attracted attention for its potential in membrane modification due to its diverse benefits. However, the existing methods, such as TA-metal networks, encounter challenges of weakened stability and reduced permeability of membrane. To solve these issues, this research presents a novel approach that integrates suspension copolymerization, polyaddition, and a sol–gel process to fabricate structurally stable copolymer ultrafiltration membranes. Active sites for sol–gel reactions were embedded into the copolymer through copolymerization. Subsequently, TA was added to the copolymer casting solution, and isocyanate propyltriethoxysilane was decorated onto TA through a polyaddition reaction. Following this, a non-solvent induced phase separation method was used for membrane fabrication. During the formation of the membrane, a sol–gel reaction occurred between the copolymer and the modified TA, ensuring both stable chemical cross-linking. The membrane demonstrates excellent permeability, fouling resistance, and long-term operational stability. This innovative approach not only addresses compatibility and leakage issues associated with traditional methods but also ensures the stable integration of hydrophilic functional monomers within the copolymer matrix. The proposed method holds promise for advancing applications of ultrafiltration membrane technology in various complex environments.

“Flexible-strong” polylactic acid porous membrane via tailored polymerization degree of lactic acid side-chains grafting for passive daytime radiative cooler

Aerogel possesses the advantages of high specific surface area, low density, and high porosity, which have shown great application in thermal regulation due to its efficient light scattering capability. However, traditional polymer-based aerogels have poor mechanical properties and lack ductility in outdoor applications, the cooling efficiency of the material is easily affected by damage during transportation, installation, and environmental factors. In this work, combining the porous nature of aerogels and the high ductility of membranes, a polylactic acid-based porous membrane cooler was developed by combining a regular honeycomb surface porous structure design and physical/chemical modification to enhance flexibility, using a simple non-solvent induced phase separation method. This porous membrane exhibits both super-flexibility (116 % elongation at break) and porous characteristics. It achieves a sub-ambient temperature decrease of 4–6 °C under direct sunlight. The optimized porous membrane demonstrates high solar reflectance (94 % of peak reflectivity, 90 % of average reflectivity) and strong infrared emissivity (96 % of peak emissivity, 91 % of average emissivity), it also maintains a solar peak reflectivity of 91 % under 100 % tensile strain and 1000 bending cycles, the cooler still maintains a cooling effect of 2–5 °C below ambient temperature. This work paves the way for developing mechanical flexible and strong radiative coolers for thermal regulation.

Novel ethylenediamine-β-cyclodextrin grafted membranes for the chiral separation of mandelic acid and its derivatives.

In the present study, flat cellulose acetate ultrafiltration membranes were prepared first by nonsolvent induced phase separation method. Then chiral membranes for separating the enantiomers were prepared by grafting the ultrafiltration membranes using ethylenediamine-β-cyclodextrin as the chiral selector and epichlorohydrin as the spacer arm. The pure water permeability of the ultrafiltration membrane was around 115 L·m-2·h-1·bar-1. The properties of the chiral membranes were characterized using infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The chiral membrane performance in enantiomer separation was evaluated with racemates, such as mandelic acid (MA), 2-chloromandelic acid (2-ClMA), 4-chloromandelic acid (4-ClMA), and methyl mandelate (MM). The influence of feed concentration on the separation efficiency was also investigated. The results indicated that the enantiomeric excess percentages (e.e%) of the racemic mixtures for these four chiral compounds were up to 31.8%, 25.4%, 17.8%, and 32.6%, respectively. The binding free energy of the chiral selector with the (S)-enantiomer calculated by molecular dynamics simulations was stronger than that with the (R)-enantiomer, which was consistent with the experimental results (higher concentration of (R)-enantiomer in the permeate). This supports the affinity absorption-separation mechanism.

Development of novel high anti-pollution polyamide/polysulfate disk tubular reverse osmosis membrane modules and their application in simulated space bathing wastewater

Water is a precious resource in space stations, and wastewater recycling is necessary to meet the needs of astronauts. In that respect, applying the high anti-pollution disk tubular reverse osmosis (DTRO) technique is a reliable way to remove pollutes from wastewater. Thin film composite (TFC) membrane treatment is the most frequently employed solution for purifying wastewater in industry; however, the intrinsic weaknesses of polymer membrane substrates, e.g., poor mechanical property, foulant adsorption and low resistance to acidic/basic conditions, greatly hamper their applications. In this study, the novel polysulfate (PSE) membrane substrates were prepared via non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) method. The microstructure and performance of PSE membrane substrates were comprehensively investigated at varying polymer concentration and nanoparticle types. The results showed that adding nanosilver to the support layer significantly enhanced the TFC- PSE/Ag membrane performance (up to 57 %) and tensile strength (by 4.57 ± 0.13). According to computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations, the optimized geometric design of deflectors would have noticeably improved the flow field distribution and strength, which was consistent with experimental data. The DTRO modules enabled the effective management of wastewater using simulated space bathing wastewater. The effluent met the water reuse criteria in terms of COD concentration, NH3-N concentration, conductivity and turbidity whose respective values were 15 mg/L, 0.21 mg/L, 60 μS/cm, and 0.9 NTU. The proposed DTRO modules own antifouling and acid/alkaline-resistance, indicating their remarkable application potential in the large-scale recovery of bathing wastewater from the earth or space station.

Amine-functionalized metal organic framework@graphene oxide as filler in PAEK-containing carboxyl group membrane for ultrafiltration with ultra-high permeability and strong fouling resistance

Achieving high fouling resistance and permeability using membrane separation technology in water treatment processes remains a challenge. In this work, a novel mixed matrix membrane (PAEK-COOH/UiO-66-NH2@GO) with superb fouling resistance and high permeability was prepared by the nonsolvent induced phase separation method, by in-situ growth of UiO-66-NH2 on graphene oxide (GO) layer, and by preparing hydrophilic poly(arylene ether ketone) (PAEK) containing carboxyl groups (PAEK-COOH). On the basis of the structure and performance analysis of the mixed matrix membrane (MMMs), the maximum water flux reached 591.25 L·m–2·h–1 for PAEK-COOH/UiO-66-NH2@GO, while the retention rate for bovine serum albumin increased from 85.40% to 94.87%. As the loading gradually increased, the hydrophilicity of the MMMs increased, significantly enhancing their fouling resistance. The strongest anti-fouling ability observed was 94.74%, which was 2.02 times greater than that of the pure membrane. At the same time, the MMMs contained internal amide and hydrogen bonds during the preparation process, forming a cross-linked structure, which further enhanced the mechanical strength and chemical stability. In summary, the MMMs with high retention rate, strong permeability, and anti-fouling ability were successfully prepared.

Preparation and performance of magnetic carbon nanotubes modified PVC substrate composite nanofiltration membranes

Polyamide (PA)/ferroferric oxide/oxidized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (Fe3O4/o-MWCNTs)/polyvinyl chloride (PVC) composite nanofiltration (NF) membranes were prepared by the interfacial polymerization (IP) process with the Fe3O4/o-MWCNTs/PVC porous membrane as the substrate membrane, which was prepared by the magnetic field assisted non-solvent induced phase separation method (NIPS) with the synthesized superparamagnetic Fe3O4/o-MWCNTs nanoparticles (NPs) as the additives of the functional intermediate layer integrated with the substrate. The effects of the magnetic carbon nanotubes modified PVC porous substrate membrane on the surface chargeability, PA layer thickness, mechanical properties, pressure resistance and permeability of the composite NF membranes were investigated, and the comprehensive performance of composite NF membranes was enhanced. The results indicated that the porosity and hydrophilicity of the Fe3O4/o-MWCNTs/PVC porous substrate membrane were improved by the migration of magnetic Fe3O4/o-MWCNTs NPs to the upper edge of the substrate membrane and uniform enrichment under magnetic field induction, which further affected the structure and properties of the PA/Fe3O4/o-MWCNTs/PVC composite NF membrane. The prepared NF membrane presented smaller roughness, thinner PA layer, larger pore size, with excellent mechanical properties and better pressure resistance. Meanwhile, the PA/Fe3O4/o-MWCNTs/PVC composite NF membrane presented excellent divalent salt rejection, with the rejection of MgSO4 and Na2SO4 maintaining more than 95.2% and 93.4%, respectively, while the permeation flux could reach 35.4 L·m−2·h−1. In summary, the modification of the substrate integrated with the functional intermediate layer had certain enlightening significance for the preparation of the NF membrane with excellent comprehensive performance.

Fabrication of Polysulfone - Zeolite Nanocomposite Membrane for Water and Wastewater Treatment Applications

Freshwater is essential in sustaining human life on the planet and the demand for potable water has increased for the past years due to population growth and modernization. However, the natural resources of water have become polluted/contaminated due to industrialization and other human activities. The development of membrane technology, especially with the creation of nanocomposite materials, provides a solution to treat polluted or contaminated water through various separation processes resulting in the production of clean water fit for human consumption. In this study, polysulfone was added with zeolite nanoparticles to fabricate nanocomposite membranes via non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) method to enhance the hydrophilicity and mechanical strength of the membrane suitable for water and wastewater applications. The nanozeolite was added in varying concentrations; 1% 5% and 10% and the fabricated membranes were characterized via Contact Angle Goniometer, universal testing machine (UTM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to determine the contact angle, tensile strength, and surface morphology, respectively. Based on the characterization data, the 1% concentration showed the highest tensile strength and the lowest contact angle measurement. The 1% nanozeolite concentration is the optimum membrane formulation due to the enhanced hydrophilicity and mechanical strength of the material.

Enhanced antifouling and separation capabilities of polydopamine@Ce-MOF functionalized PES ultrafiltration membrane

The need for antifouling membranes is substantial due to fouling’s negative impact on the effectiveness and durability of ultrafiltration membranes. In recent times, Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as effective additives for crafting ultrafiltration (UF) membranes. However, to harness their benefits and mitigate their drawbacks, a well-considered approach is imperative. In this work, polyethersulfone (PES) UF membranes were tailored with polydopamine (PDA)-modified cerium (Ce)-MOF (PDA@Ce-MOF) to achieve satisfactory antifouling properties and to remove biological macromolecules such as bovine serum albumin (BSA) and humic acid (HA) from wastewater. The non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) method was used to simultaneously fabricate the membrane and modify it with different PDA@Ce-MOF concentrations ranging from 0.05 to 0.50 wt.%. Results showed significant improvements on the membrane’s morphology, hydrophilicity, porosity and pore size at 0.10 wt.% loading of PDA@Ce-MOF. The synergistic effect of the PDA and Ce-MOF on the membrane improved the pure water flux (337 L m−2 h−1) and filtration performance in the filtration of Bovine serum albumin (BSA) and humic acid (HA) reporting 145 L m−2 h−1 and 98% rejection, and 164 L m−2 h−1 and 88% rejection; respectively. Further, water-attracting functional moieties of PDA@Ce-MOF hindered the deposition of BSA protein on the membrane surface, resulting in an excellent flux recovery ratio (FRR) of ~87%, alongside mitigated irreversible fouling.

The effect of electric field-assisted non-solvent induced phase separation method on PVDF membrane morphologies and performances

ABSTRACT Achieving specific functions in polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membranes requires precise control over their crystalline and morphological structure. In this study, we introduce an innovative method involving the application of an electric field as a preliminary treatment step before immersing PVDF in water during the fabrication of non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) membranes. Our study reveals that even a brief exposure to an electric field result in a more organized and aligned molecular structure and significantly altered the crystallinity of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF). This structural transformation leads to notable improvements in membrane morphology, characterized by reduced macrovoids and enhanced uniformity. Additionally, membranes produced through this method exhibit markedly enhanced ionic conductivity, a pivotal attribute for optimal performance in electrochemical devices. This innovative approach presents an effective alternative for enhancing PVDF membrane properties, with promising implications for high-performance electrochemical devices and separation membranes. Future research endeavors are necessary to elucidate the underlying mechanisms responsible for these enhancements and to assess the long-term stability and practical applicability of the pretreated membranes.

Carbon nitride/polyimide porous film via an NIPS method with advanced dielectric and hydrophobicity properties.

Herein, an ultra-low dielectric porous polyimide (PPI) composite film was fabricated by non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS). High-performance carbon nitride nanosheets grafted by heptadecafluoro-1,1,2,2-tetradecyl-trimethoxysilane (CNNF) were incorporated into the PPI film to enhance thermomechanical and hydrophobic properties. The effects of non-solvent and filler content on the porous morphology, dielectric properties, hydrophobicity and thermomechanical properties of films were investigated. The porous morphology of the CNNF/PPI film changed from the coexistence of pipe-like and spongy structure via H2O, to a tightly-stacked porous structure via MeOH as non-solvent. The dielectric constants ε' of 0.5 wt%-CNNF/PPI(H2O) and 0.5 wt%-CNNF/PPI(MeOH) were 1.56 and 1.69 at 1 MHz, respectively, which were ∼50% lower than that of the original PI film (ε' = 3.33). With the introduction of CNNF, the water contact angle (WCA) of CNNF/PPI(H2O) increased from 66° to 107° and that of CNNF/PPI(MeOH) increased from 92° to 120°. Simultaneously, the storage modulus E' of 2 wt%-CNNF/PPI(MeOH) reached its highest value of ∼881 MPa, which was ∼350 MPa higher than that of PPI(MeOH), together with an enhancement in Tg. This method confirmed a promising prospect for the utilization of porous PI substrates in integrated circuits and microelectronic devices.

Dual-functional Polyvinylidene Fluoride Beta Cyclodextrin-Grafted Graphene Oxide Mixed Matrix Membranes for Removal of Anionic Azo Dyes

AbstractMixed matrix PVDF polymeric membranes were incorporated with β–CD grafted graphene oxide (GO) nanocomposites (β–CD-g-GO) via nonsolvent induced phase separation method and used in the adsorption of congo red (CR) and methyl orange (MO) dyes. The incorporation of β–CD-g-GO (6 wt%) was found to improve the membrane physico-chemical properties and performance. The water content was increased by 24.26%, contact angle reduced from 84.17 to 62.97° while flux increased from 12.42 to 275.03 L m−2 h−1 bar−1. The membranes were able to remove 100% of CR at pH 7 and 99.4% of the MO dye at pH 5 within 240 min. The adsorption kinetics and isotherms were well fitted to the pseudo second-order kinetic model and Freundlich isotherm model respectively. These results indicated that the adsorption of both dyes occurred via chemisorption and in a multilayer on a heterogeneous surface of the membranes. According to these findings, it was concluded that the adsorption mechanism was due to hydrogen bonding interactions between nitrogen and hydroxyl groups, inclusion complexation introduced by β–CD molecules and electrostatic interactions, between the negatively charged oxygen-containing groups of the membrane and the positively charged nitrogen and azo-linkages of the dye molecules. PVDF/β–CD-g-GO membranes have shown excellent adsorption efficiency towards azo dyes. This work indicates that the embedding of adsorptive GO-β–CD nanocomposites in PVDF membranes can remove anionic dyes from wastewater treatment.

Manufacturing Strategies for Engineering Carbon Electrodes Via Non-Solvent Induced Phase Separation

Porous electrodes are at the core of emerging electrochemical systems and tuning the electrode properties is critical to overcome system-specific limitations. To meet the stringent performance and cost requirements, there is a need for tailored microstructures generated through inexpensive and scalable synthesis methods with precursors originating from reliably-sourced, globally-abundant feedstocks. To this end, we recently introduced a manufacturing route using non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS), yielding porous carbon electrodes with multimodal and interconnected porosity. The synthesized NIPS electrodes demonstrated a beneficial trade-off between transport properties (permeability, mass transfer) and electrochemically active surface area (ECSA) resulting in high performance in iron and all-vanadium redox flow batteries (RFBs)[1,2]. Moreover, NIPS manufacturing offered control over electrode characteristics (pore size, surface area) which are critical parameters for broader electrochemical devices. Besides its use for RFB application, we hypothesize that the electrode morphologies resulting from NIPS could be applied to a broader range of electrochemical systems employing porous electrodes. Consequently, here we focus on extending the library of electrode microstructures achievable via NIPS through the alteration of simple process parameters.In this presentation, I will discuss our latest advances on the bottom-up manufacturing of porous electrodes using NIPS targeting porosity gradients and high ECSA materials. For the former, we introduce the use of a control layer, casted on top of the NIPS polymer solution at the interface with the coagulation bath, thereby altering the rate of the phase separation process. We investigate various process parameters such as the composition, viscosity, and thickness of the control layer and assess their effect onto the resulting microstructures. The NIPS method assisted by a control layer generates porosity gradients, resulting in a slight increase of the electrode ECSA at the cost of a higher pressure drop. To further increase the ECSA of the prepared electrodes, we also propose nano-patterning approaches to significantly enhance ECSA through addition of nano-scale porosity without compromising the pressure drop through the porous structure. Finally, both porosity gradient and nano-patterned NIPS electrodes are tested in a all-vanadium redox flow cell to extract microstructure-performance relationships. Despite being in its early technological stage, this work illustrates the versatility of NIPS to manufacture porous electrodes through a very broad microstructural design space.

Scaling up Electrode Manufacturing with Non-Solvent Induced Phase Separation Technology

Grid-scale energy storage technologies must be deployed at a massive scale to balance the mismatch between energy generation using renewable technologies and demand. Redox flow batteries are an emerging technological option for large-scale and multi-hour electrochemical energy storage thanks to their ability to decouple energy and power1. Despite their intrinsic advantages, the current elevated costs of this technology hinders commercialization2. To improve cost competitiveness, research efforts have focused on developing novel electrolyte chemistries and optimized reactor concepts. To the latter, optimizing the porous electrode microstructure and surface chemistry offers a promising pathway to increase the performance of flow batteries. However, porous electrodes design is challenging as they must fulfil contradictory requirements such as providing high surface area for electrochemical reactions, facilitating mass transport of reactive species, and maintaining low operational pressure drop. Furthermore, state-of-the-art porous electrodes have been repurposed from other mature electrochemical technologies but have not been tailored for the unique requirements of redox flow batteries3.Non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) has been recently introduced as a versatile method to synthesize porous structures suitable for RFBs with unique properties, which are unattainable with current fibrous materials4,5. Drawing inspiration from membrane fabrication techniques, we reengineered the method for the synthesis of porous electrodes for use in redox flow batteries. The porous electrodes synthesized with NIPS were tested in a single-electrolyte cell configuration and then in an all-vanadium redox flow battery, showing promising electrochemical performance in comparison with existing commercial fibrous carbon materials. In this presentation, I will discuss our current efforts to scale up the NIPS method to manufacture electrodes at industrial scale. We believe that non-solvent induced phase separation is a cost-effective alternative to traditional carbon fibrous materials thanks to the few simpler steps required for the electrode preparation. Based on technoeconomic modeling, we estimate that the production cost of the NIPS electrodes can be less than half of the production costs of traditional carbon fibrous electrodes6. Moreover, the phase separated electrodes do not require post-manufacturing heat treatment to increase the surface area and wettability, which further translates into savings on energy costs. In this project, we aspire to scale-up the NIPS materials to a final size, after carbonization, of 30·30 cm2 while retaining similar microstructural and electrochemical performance properties as in laboratory scale. We perform a suite of microscopy, spectroscopic and flow cell diagnostics to correlate the electrode microstructure, surface chemistry and device performance. Preparation and properties of PEEK-g-PNIPAm separation membranes with thermo-responsiveness for emulsion and organic liquid separation

Although poly (ether ether ketone) (PEEK) exhibits excellent solvent resistance, it could not be prepared directly by non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) method due to its poor solubility. Herein, PEEK porous membranes were successfully fabricated by combining NIPS and acid hydrolysis. The superhydrophilic thermo-responsive poly (N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAm) polymer was in-situ grafted on the PEEK membrane surface via the UV grafting polymerization and improved the membrane interface hydrophilicity, making the membrane water contact angle changed from 89.5° to 0° at 25 °C. After heating the membrane surface to 40 °C, the membrane exhibited hydrophobicity (100°), realizing the thermo-responsiveness via switching the temperature. Furthermore, due to the transferred membrane wettability at different temperatures, PEEK-g-PNIPAm could separate different types of oil-bearing systems with high rejection above 99.0 %. What’s more, the PNIPAm layer also enhanced the membrane anti-fouling capacity. Benefiting from the extraordinary solvent resistance of the PEEK matrix, PEEK-g-PNIPAm maintains its intact morphology after 6 h immersion in various organic solvents, addressing the commonly reported problem of polymer membranes having certain solubility in solvents. The PEEK-based membranes with excellent solvent resistance could be useful in the oil-bearing separation.

Preparation of CPVC-based activated carbon spheres and insight into the adsorption-desorption performance for typical volatile organic compounds

Chlorinated polyvinyl chloride (CPVC)-based activated carbon spheres with smooth surfaces, good sphericity, interconnected hierarchical porous structure and high porosity have been synthesized by non-solvent induced phase separation method, followed by successive treatments of stabilization, carbonization at 450 °C in N2 atmosphere, and activation with CO2 as an agent at 900–1000 °C. The effect of activation temperatures on the textural properties of activated carbon spheres and their adsorption potential for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) under dynamic conditions is investigated. CO2 activation improves the hierarchy in the microporous range by stimulating the formation of supermicropores and significantly expands the specific surface area and pore volume of activated carbon spheres. The textural properties of adsorbents play a vital role in the adsorption performance of different VOCs. The adsorption capacity of VOC molecules can be greatly promoted by elevating specific surface area and pore volume. Due to the compatibility difference between the VOC molecules and the pore structure of adsorbents, the adsorption capacity follows the order of toluene > m-xylene > n-hexane. The adsorption isotherm of toluene on CPVC-AC1000 can be generally expressed by the Langmuir model. The adsorbents with larger average pore diameters possess a lower activation energy of desorption, which is beneficial for desorption. The carbon sphere activated at 1000 °C is a high-performance adsorbent with good reusability. Thus, the present study provides a synthesis process to produce the activated carbon spheres with high porosity from low-cost CPVC for its application in VOC adsorption.

Microstructural Characterization of PCL-HA Bone Scaffolds Based on Nonsolvent-Induced Phase Separation.

Composite materials containing pores play a crucial role in the field of bone tissue engineering. The nonsolvent-induced phase separation (NIPS) technique, commonly used for manufacturing membranes, has proven to be an effective method for fabricating composite scaffolds with tunable porosity. To explore this potential, we produced 10% (w/v) poly(caprolactone) (PCL)-nanohydroxyapatite (HA) composite porous film scaffolds with varying HA contents (0/10/15/20 wt %) and two thicknesses (corresponding to 1 and 2 mL of solution resulting in 800-900 and 1600-1800 μm thickness, respectively) using the NIPS method. We conducted a comprehensive analysis of how the internal microstructure and surface characteristics of these scaffolds varied based on their composition and thickness. In particular, for each scaffold, we analyzed overall porosity, pore size distribution, pore shape, and degree of anisotropy as well as mechanical behaviors. Micro-CT and SEM analyses revealed that PCL-HA scaffolds with various HA contents possessed micro (<100 μm) scale porosity due to the NIPS method. Greater thicknesses typically resulted in larger average pore sizes and greater overall porosity. However, unlike in thinner scaffolds, greater/higher HA content did not exhibit a direct correlation with a greater pore size for thicker scaffolds. In thinner scaffolds, adding HA above an effective threshold content of 15 wt % and beyond did lead to a greater pore size. The higher pore anisotropy was in line with the higher HA content for both groups. SEM images demonstrated that both groups showed highly uniformly distributed internal microporous morphology regardless of HA content and thickness. The results suggest that NIPS-based scaffolds hold promise for bone tissue engineering but that the optimal HA content and thickness should be carefully considered based on desired porosity and application.

Novel polycarbonate/Fe3O4 nanocomposite membranes: Fabrication and performance evaluation in water treatment

AbstractIn this work, a novel polycarbonate (PC) nanocomposite membrane was prepared by incorporation of iron oxide (Fe3O4) nanoparticles using the nonsolvent induced phase separation method. The prepared membranes was applied in a submerged membrane system for bovine serum albumin (BSA) filtration through two cycles of 60 min. The properties and performance of fabricated membranes was characterized using water content, porosity, water contact angle, mechanical and thermal properties, membrane morphology including FESEM and AFM, antifouling performance, and BSA rejection. Results showed that by incorporation of Fe3O4 up to 0.5 wt.% in membrane, the hydrophilicity and porosity was increased and then decreased again by more nanoparticles concentration. DSC analysis indicated that Tg of membrane increased from 135.2 to 140.1°C when 0.5 wt.% of Fe3O4 was used. Also, the results of FESEM images revealed that addition of Fe3O4 nanoparticles significantly increased the number and pore size of membrane surface. According to AFM analysis, the membrane containing 0.5 wt.% showed smoother surface as compared to other membranes. Additionally, the PC/Fe3O4–0.5 membrane had better antifouling properties in term of high flux recovery ratio of 82.3% and 85% in the first and second cycles, respectively, while the neat PC membrane showed lower FRR of 70.4% and 74%.
