Periodic Optimal Control of a Plug Flow Reactor Model with an Isoperimetric Constraint

AbstractWe study a class of nonlinear hyperbolic partial differential equations with boundary control. This class describes chemical reactions of the type “$$A \rightarrow $$ A → product” carried out in a plug flow reactor (PFR) in the presence of an inert component. An isoperimetric optimal control problem with periodic boundary conditions and input constraints is formulated for the considered mathematical model in order to maximize the mean amount of product over the period. For the single-input system, the optimality of a bang-bang control strategy is proved in the class of bounded measurable inputs. The case of controlled flow rate input is also analyzed by exploiting the method of characteristics. A case study is performed to illustrate the performance of the reaction model under different control strategies.

The chemostat reactor: A stability analysis and model predictive control

This contribution develops the model predictive control for an unstable chemostat reactor. Initially, we analyze the system’s model — a nonlinear first-order hyperbolic partial integro-differential equation (PIDE) — and carry the model linearization around an unstable operating condition. Employing the structure-preserving Cayley–Tustin transformation, we obtain a discrete-time model representation of the continuous model. Subsequently, we solve the operator Ricatti equations in the discrete-time setting to derive a full state feedback controller that stabilizes the closed-loop and design a Luenberger observer for state reconstruction given the system output measures. Finally, we formulate a dual-mode MPC ensuring constraint satisfaction and optimality, integrating the gain-based unconstrained full-state feedback optimal control obtained from the Ricatti equation. This dual-mode strategy describes an optimization problem where the predictive controller acts only if constraints become active within the control horizon. Simulation studies validate the controller performance, where the MPC only takes action if the constraints are predicted to be active within the control horizon while also guaranteeing closed-loop stabilization under only output feedback. This type of controller can be easily implemented with other control strategies and significantly decreases the computational costs of solving the optimal control problems when compared to other MPC approaches.

Spectral shifted Chebyshev collocation technique with residual power series algorithm for time fractional problems.

In this paper, two problems involving nonlinear time fractional hyperbolic partial differential equations (PDEs) and time fractional pseudo hyperbolic PDEs with nonlocal conditions are presented. Collocation technique for shifted Chebyshev of the second kind with residual power series algorithm (CTSCSK-RPSA) is the main method for solving these problems. Moreover, error analysis theory is provided in detail. Numerical solutions provided using CTSCSK-RPSA are compared with existing techniques in literature. CTSCSK-RPSA is accurate, simple and convenient method for obtaining solutions of linear and nonlinear physical and engineering problems.

Coupling of sediment transport phenomena with turbulent surface flows: mathematical modeling, finite volume approximation and test simulations

Several sediment transport models coupled with shallow water equations have been developed in the literature over the past few decades. The water flow in the presence of abrupt bottom slopes distorts and cause turbulence. This phenomenon is well-known in the sediment transport theory. Sediment transport models based on shallow water equations do not include turbulence effects or the phase-lag between water velocity and bottom velocity. In this study, we consider a one-dimensional free surface turbulent water flow with sediment and morphodynamic. We propose a new one-dimensional acceleration-dissipation mathematical sediment transport model that considers the distortion of horizontal profile velocity in transport. The model is an improved version of existing averaged sediment transport models. In the new model, there is a distinction between fluid velocity and bottom velocity through a new bedload equation. The mathematical model is a system of nonlinear hyperbolic partial differential equations that are approximated by a stable and robust finite volume scheme presented in the path-conservative framework. Numerical tests are performed to demonstrate the efficiency of the developed theory.

Formation of singularities in plasma ion dynamics

We study the formation of singularity for the Euler–Poisson system equipped with the Boltzmann relation, which describes the dynamics of ions in an electrostatic plasma. In general, it is known that smooth solutions to nonlinear hyperbolic equations fail to exist globally in time. We establish criteria for C 1 blow-up of the Euler–Poisson system, both for the isothermal and pressureless cases. In particular, our blow-up condition for the pressureless model does not require that the gradient of velocity is negatively large. In fact, our result particularly implies that the smooth solutions can break down even if the gradient of initial velocity is trivial. For the isothermal case, we prove that smooth solutions leave C 1 class in a finite time when the gradients of the Riemann functions are initially large.

Spherically symmetric evolution of self-gravitating massive fields

We are interested in the global dynamics of a massive scalar field evolving under its own gravitational field and, in this paper, we study spherically symmetric solutions to Einstein's field equations coupled with a Klein-Gordon equation with quadratic potential. For the initial value problem we establish a global existence theory when initial data are prescribed on a future light cone with vertex at the center of symmetry. A suitably generalized solution in Bondi coordinates is sought which has low regularity and possibly large but finite Bondi mass. A similar result was established first by Christodoulou for massless fields. In order to deal with massive fields, we must overcome several challenges and significantly modify Christodoulou's original method. First of all, we formulate the Einstein-Klein-Gordon system in spherical symmetry as a non-local and nonlinear hyperbolic equation and, by carefully investigating the global dynamical behavior of the massive field, we establish various estimates concerning the Einstein operator, the Hawking mass, and the Bondi mass, including novel positivity and monotonicity properties. Importantly, in addition to a regularization at the center of symmetry we find it necessary to also introduce a regularization at null infinity. We also establish new energy and decay estimates for, both, regularized and generalized solutions.

Polynomial Fuzzy Observer-Based Feedback Control for Nonlinear Hyperbolic PDEs Systems.

This article explores the observer-based feedback control problem for a nonlinear hyperbolic partial differential equations (PDEs) system. Initially, the polynomial fuzzy hyperbolic PDEs (PFHPDEs) model is established through the utilization of the fuzzy identification approach, derived from the nonlinear hyperbolic PDEs model. Various types of state estimation and controller design problems for the polynomial fuzzy PDEs system are discussed concerning the state estimation problem. To investigate the relaxed stability problem, Euler's homogeneous theorem, Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional with polynomial matrices (LKFPM), and the sum-of-squares (SOSs) approach are adopted. The exponential stabilization condition is formulated in terms of the spatial-derivative-SOSs (SD-SOSs). Additionally, a segmental algorithm is developed to find the feasible solution for the SD-SOS condition. Finally, a hyperbolic PDEs system and several numerical examples are provided to illustrate the validity and effectiveness of the proposed results.

Extension of Haar wavelet technique for numerical solution of three-dimensional linear and nonlinear telegraph equations

In this manuscript, a hybrid numerical technique is presented for solving three-dimensional hyperbolic telegraph equations. The proposed technique is based on the Haar wavelet collocation method and the finite difference method. In this technique, the space derivatives are estimated by truncated Haar wavelet series, while the time derivatives are approximated using finite difference method. The method is applied to some linear and non-linear three-dimensional hyperbolic telegraph equations. In the linear case, the resulting algebraic system is solved by the Gauss elimination technique. Whereas in the nonlinear case, the quasi-Newton linearization technique is utilized to remove the nonlinearity of the problem. The maximum absolute errors, root mean square errors and computational rate of convergence are calculated for a different number of collocation points at different time steps of the final time t=1. The stability analysis for the proposed method is also discussed. Overall, the recently devised numerical method boasts straightforward implementation, rapid convergence, and enhanced accuracy in addressing both linear and nonlinear problems.

Sturmian comparison theorem for hyperbolic equations on a rectangular prism

<abstract><p>In this paper, new Sturmian comparison results were obtained for linear and nonlinear hyperbolic equations on a rectangular prism. The results obtained for linear equations extended those given by Kreith [Sturmian theorems on hyperbolic equations, <italic>Proc. Amer. Math. Soc.</italic>, <bold>22</bold> (1969), 277-281] in which the Sturmian comparison theorem for linear equations was obtained on a rectangular region in the plane. For the purpose of verification, an application was described using an eigenvalue problem.</p></abstract>

Modeling and Quantifying Parameter Uncertainty of Co‐Seismic Non‐Classical Nonlinearity in Rocks

AbstractDynamic perturbations reveal unconventional nonlinear behavior in rocks, as evidenced by field and laboratory studies. During the passage of seismic waves, rocks exhibit a decrease in elastic moduli, slowly recovering after. Yet, comprehensive physical models describing these moduli alterations remain sparse and insufficiently validated against observations. Here, we demonstrate the applicability of two physical damage models—the internal variable model (IVM) and the continuum damage model (CDM)—to provide quantitative descriptions of nonlinear co‐seismic elastic wave propagation observations. While the IVM uses one internal variable to describe the evolution of elastic material moduli, the CDM damage variable is a mathematical representation of microscopic defects. We recast the IVM and CDM models as nonlinear hyperbolic partial differential equations and implement 1D and 2D numerical simulations using an arbitrary high‐order discontinuous Galerkin method. We verify the modeling results with co‐propagating acousto‐elastic experimental measurements. Subsequently, we infer the parameters for these nonlinear models from laboratory experiments using probabilistic Bayesian inversion and 2D simulations. By adopting the Adaptive Metropolis Markov chain Monte Carlo method, we quantify the uncertainties of inferred parameters for both physical models, investigating their interplay in 70,000 simulations. We find that the damage variables can trade off with the stress‐strain nonlinearity in discernible ways. We discuss physical interpretations of both damage models and that our CDM quantitatively captures an observed damage increase with perturbation frequency. Our results contribute to a more holistic understanding of co‐seismic damage and post‐seismic recovery after earthquakes bridging the worlds of theoretical analysis and laboratory findings.

AbstractIn the paper the speed‐in‐action problem is investigated for the second‐order nonlinear hyperbolic equation. The main feature of the paper is that for the first time the problem is considered with a nonlocal condition in differ from many works devoted the similar problems. A theorem on the existence of the optimal control is proved. Freshet differentiability of the corresponding functional is shown. The necessary optimality conditions are derived in the form of variational inequalities.

Nonlinear thermal analysis of two-dimensional materials with memory

A nonlinear hyperbolic heat transport equation has been proposed based on the Cattaneo model without mechanical effects. We analyze the two-dimensional Maxwell-Cattaneo-Vernotte heat equation in a medium subjected to homogeneous and non-homogeneous boundary conditions and with thermal conductivity and relaxation time linearly dependent on temperature. Since these nonlinearities are essential from an experimental point of view, it is necessary to establish an effective and reliable way to solve the system of partial differential equations and study the behavior of temperature evolution. A numerical scheme of finite differences for the solution of the two-dimensional non-Fourier heat transfer equation is introduced and studied. We also investigate the attributes of the numerical method from the aspects of stability, dissipation and dispersive errors.

Exact solutions of hyperbolic reaction-diffusion equations in two dimensions

Exact solutions are constructed for a class of nonlinear hyperbolic reaction-diffusion equations in two-space dimensions. Reduction of variables and subsequent solutions follow from a special nonclassical symmetry that uncovers a conditionally integrable system, equivalent to the linear Helmholtz equation. The hyperbolicity is commonly associated with a speed limit due to a delay, \(\tau\), between gradients and fluxes. With lethal boundary conditions on a circular domain wherein a species population exhibits logistic growth of Fisher–KPP type with equal time lag, the critical domain size for avoidance of extinction does not depend on \(\tau\). A diminishing exact solution within a circular domain is also constructed, when the reaction represents a weak Allee effect of Huxley type. For a combustion reaction of Arrhenius type, the only known exact solution that is finite but unbounded is extended to allow for a positive \(\tau\). doi: 10.1017/S1446181123000093

Causal explicit algorithm for heat conduction in a plasma

Hyperbolic heat conduction extends standard Spitzer-Harm heat conduction by including a term proportional to the time derivative of the heat flux. The new term arises from a kinetic derivation of the heat flux that includes higher order corrections. We present a causal explicit numerical algorithm for solving the nonlinear hyperbolic heat conduction equation in an unmagnetized plasma. The maximum stable timestep for the causal explicit algorithm scales linearly with the cell size, owing to the hyperbolic nature of the problem. This is in contrast to the quadratic scaling of the maximum stable timestep with the cell size for the parabolic forward time centered space algorithm. The favorable scaling of the timestep with the cell size enables a practical explicit implementation of heat conduction in high-performance massively parallel plasma codes. In particular, we have implemented the causal explicit algorithm in the laser plasma interaction code pF3D. We verify the CE algorithm and analyze its convergence rate by simulating a harmonic mode, which has an analytic solution within the context of the HHC model. We also compare simulations using the CE algorithm to those using the forward time centered space algorithm on a pair of test problems: evolution in time of a Gaussian temperature perturbation in a uniform plasma and heat transport in the presence of inverse bremsstrahlung heating by a Gaussian laser speckle.

Stabilization of nonlinear non-uniform piezoelectric beam with time-varying delay in distributed control input

The stabilization issue for a nonlinear piezoelectric beam system with variable coefficients and time-varying delay in the control input is considered. The system is constituted by two strongly coupled nonlinear hyperbolic equations, in one of which a kind of distributed control is actuated and time-varying delay exists in the control input. The feedback gains are also time-varying ones. We first apply Kato's variable norm technique to show the well-posedness of the system without nonlinear terms and based on which, the well-posedness of the whole nonlinear system is proved by the fixed-point theory. The exponential stability of the nonlinear time-delay coupled PDEs' system is further proved by the energy estimates together with multiplier techniques under certain conditions. The stability of its corresponding electrostatic/quasi-static model is also investigated. Finally, some numerical simulations are given to illuminate the results obtained in this work.

A Lagrangian method for slurry flow modeling in hydraulic fractures

We developed a new numerical simulator of slurry flow in hydraulic fractures. It is based on a continuum model developed under the assumptions of lubrication theory. We consider slurry containing fluid and proppant components. Proppant particles settle under gravity and bridge in the flow domain. Fluid fluxes are calculated from an elliptic boundary value problem for given fracture geometry and sources/sinks distribution. We solve it using a conservative finite volume method and then apply empirical closure relations to get the velocity field for solids. The transport of slurry components is described by nonlinear hyperbolic equations with fluxes depending on proppant concentration and particle size/fracture width ratio. These equations admit solutions with concentration shock waves and rarefaction fans. They must be represented accurately in the computational algorithm. We utilize an Eulerian approach for the discretization of nonlinear proppant fluxes. After getting the fluxes on the interfaces between Eulerian grid cells we follow a Lagrangian approach to simulate the proppant transport along the given velocity field. In this study we discuss key implementation aspects: time step selection, regularization, fluxes discretization, seeding, reseeding, and movement of Lagrangian particles. We verify the simulator on benchmark solutions focused on advection, batch proppant settling, slurry slumping and fluid displacement by proppant.

Qualitative Analysis for Solving a Fractional Integro-Differential Equation of Hyperbolic Type with Numerical Treatment Using the Lerch Matrix Collocation Method

In this research, we present a qualitative analysis for studying a new modification of a nonlinear hyperbolic fractional integro-differential equation (NHFIDEq) in dual Banach space CEE, J. Under some suitable conditions, the existence and uniqueness of a solution are demonstrated with the use of fixed-point theorems. The verification of the offered method has been conducted by applying the Lerch matrix collocation (LMC) method as a numerical treatment. The major motivation for selecting the LMC approach is that it reduces the solution of the given NHFIDEq to a matrix representation form corresponding to a linear system of algebraic equations; additionally, to demonstrate that the proposed strategy has better precision than alternative numerical methods, we study the error and the convergence analysis. Finally, we introduce numerical examples illustrating comparisons between the exact solutions and numerical solutions for different values of the Lerch parameters λ and time t as well as how the absolute error in each example is calculated.
