14N nuclear quadrupole resonance in several liquid crystals in their solid state

Nitrogen-14 nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) spectra in several liquid crystals in their solid state have been detected at 77 K, using a pulsed spectrometer. The quadrupole coupling constants ( e 2 qQ) and asymmetry parameters (η) for the nitrogens have been calculated.

Correlation of carbonic anhydrase inhibitory activities of benzenesulfonamides with the data obtained by use of nitrogen-14 nuclear quadrupole resonance

Nitrogen-14 nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) spectra of several benzenesulfonamides in their solid state are reported and analyzed in the framework of the Townes and Dailey theory. Satisfactory correlations between the (sigma NH--sigma NS) electron densities at the sulfamyl nitrogen and the in vitro carbonic anhydrase inhibitory activities of the sulfonamides have been found. The correlations are in accord with the results of other studies that show the carbonic anhydrase inhibitory activities to be largely influenced by the electronic property of the sulfamyl group.

Nitrogen-14 nuclear quadrupole resonance spectra of substituted nitrobenzenes

The 14N nuclear quadrupole resonance spectra have been measured for nitrobenzene and nine substituted nitrobenzenes. The experiments were carried out at 77 K, using the double-resonance, level-crossing technique. The 14N signals for the −NH 2 groups of m-and p-nitroaniline were also observed. The quadrupole coupling constants for the nitro group nitrogens vary from 1493 kHz for p-nitroaniline (η = 0.292) to 1232 kHz for m-dinitrobenzene (η = 0.360). The dependence of e 2 Qq/ h upon the meta or the para substituent suggests that the substituents affect mainly the covalency in the nitrogen-carbon σ bond. A linear relationship is observed between e 2 Qq/ h and the Hammett substituent constants.

Nitrogen-14 nuclear quadrupole resonance study of substituted nitrobenzenes

Nitrogen-14 nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) spectra of 26 C–nitro compounds are reported and analyzed in the framework of the Townes and Dailey theory. Six different possibilities for the principal axis system of the electric field gradient (efg) tensor at the nitrogen of the NO2 group are considered. The results lead to the conclusion that the z direction of the principal axes is in the plane of the molecule and perpendicular to the C–N bond, whereas the x direction is along the C–N bond. The variations of the π electron density are in very good agreement with the ideas of classical chemistry. Satisfactory correlations of NQR data with the Hammett σ and σR constants have been found. σp and σR for the cholesteryl group are determined which suggest that the cholesteryl group, COOC27H45, is an electron attracting group. The nitrogen-14 quadrupole coupling constant in the solid phase of nitromethane (1695 kHz) is found to be substantially larger than that found in the gaseous phase (1187 kHz) by microwave measurements. This result cannot be explained by invoking the presence of hydrogen bonds in the solid phase of nitromethane.

Nitrogen-14 nuclear quadrupole resonance studies of para-substituted benzene diazonium salts

The first 14N nuclear quadrupole resonance results on the one-coordinated nitrogen atom of the diazonium group are reported. A series of para-substituted benzene diazonium cations is investigated and the Townes/Dailey theory is used to determine the electron populations of the nitrogen atomic orbitals as a function of a variety of para substituents. A linear relationship between π-electron populations at the one-coordinated nitrogen site and the Hammett σ p +′ s is obtained. Small variations in NQR resulting from interaction of different anions with the benzene diazonium cations are also perceptible by NQR tecniques.

Nitrogen-14 nuclear quadrupole resonance study of several hydroxypyrimidines

Nitrogen-14 nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) spectra of several hydroxypyrimidines of biological and pharmacological importance are reported and analyzed in the framework of the semiempirical Townes and Dailey theory. Included among the compounds are thymine, uracil, uridine, barbituric acid, orotic acid, and cyanuric acid. The results obtained suggest that in all cases the molecules in their ground state exist predominantly in the dilactam tautomeric form. Significant differences have been observed in the NQR spectra of the two nitrogens in barbituric acid which cannot be accounted for by the differences in the hydrogen bond lengths alone.

Nuclear quadrupole resonance of nitrogen-14 in guanidine complexes, cyanoguanidine, and substituted ureas

The nuclear quadrupole resonance of nitrogen-14 in guanidine monohydrochloride, guanidine acetate, guanidine oxalate, guanidine monothiocyanate, guanidine sulfate, guanidine carbonate, cyanoguanidine, ethylurea and sym.-diethylurea were observed at various temperatures. The coupling constants and asymmetry parameters are interpreted in terms of the Townes and Dailey theory.

Nuclear quadrupole resonance of nitrogen-14 in some acetonitrile derivatives

The pure quadrupole resonance of cyano nitrogen in cyanoacetic acid, methyl cyanoacetate, ethyl cyanoacetate, ethylene cyanohydrin, acetone cyanohydrin, iminodiacetonitrile, methylaminoacetonitrile, and cyanoacetamide was observed at liquid nitrogen temperature. The resonance frequencies of imino nitrogen and amide nitrogen were also detected for iminodiacetonitrile and cyanoacetamide, respectively. The observed coupling constants of cyano nitrogen were interpreted in terms of the inductive effect of various substituents. The ionic character of NH and NC bonds was estimated from the observed resonance frequencies of imino nitrogen in iminodiacetonitrile.

Nitrogen-14 nuclear quadrupole resonance study of the guanidinium ion

Numerous ionic compounds containing the guanidinium ion have been investigated by means of nitrogen-14 nuclear quadrupole resonance techniques. The nitrogen resonance spectrum of the amino groups of the quanidinium ions yielded, with a few exceptions, an average e 2qQ/h = 3553.6 kHz and an average asymmetry parameter η = 0.39493. The Townes-Dailey theory is employed in interpreting the quadrupole coupling data to yield the electronic populations of the bonds. In two cases (guanidinium acetate and guanidinium carbonate) large deviations from the average quadrupole coupling parameters were observed. These deviations are interpreted, by means of a modified Townes-Dailey theory, to indicate that hydrogen bonds are formed between the guanidinium ions and the anions.
