Depiction of mental health issues during Covid-19 pandemic in media: an analysis framework model and a pilot study (the cases of Australia, Germany and Lithuania)

As a lot of information nowadays is being gathered through social media, this could also be used as a source in future studies, especially to those relating to the younger generation.ConclusionsAs indicated in our pilot study, many articles tend to focus on the adverse effects of the pandemic. Moreover, the news also lacked statistical information, a detailed explanation of the events and solutions to address the issues presented in the articles. With such a high flow of negative information, it is unsurprising that some experts estimate the mental health problems to rise rapidly in the upcoming months and years.

College students’ media habits, concern for themselves and others, and mental health in the era of COVID-19.

The COVID-19 pandemic has entirely disrupted college students' education plans, often their physical location, and it remains elusive when life will return to prepandemic normalcy. The current study examined changing media use patterns during the COVID-19 pandemic, the effect of these patterns on feelings of concern regarding one's future and society, and the moderating roles of anxiety and depression in relations. Seventy-four college students (70% female;55% White, 24% Pell-grant eligible) completed an online survey assessing time spent on TV, social media, and video game use in spring of 2019 (T1) and spring of 2020 (T2). Results revealed TV and video game, but not social media, use increased from T1 to T2, and change in TV use positively predicted an increased concern about society. Further, moderation analyses showed increased social media use raised concern for one's future at lower levels of anxiety. Change in social media use raised concern for society at higher levels of depression. This study advances our understanding of college students' interactions with media during the COVID-19 pandemic, suggesting some types of media may have been used as coping mechanisms with various effects on concern for self and others. Mental health can be salient to these relations. This could be due to desires to stay current with news on the national emergency and due to unexpected confinement to home settings. More TV viewing predicted increased concern for society, perhaps due to constant reporting on deaths, hospital crowding, and virus spread on TV news. Increasing social media use also was related to increased concern for one's future for students low in anxiety and concern for society for students high in depression, potentially due to worrisome posts and dire news stories being posted at high rates. Testing the Effect of Cross-cutting Exposure to Cable TV News on Affective Polarization: Evidence from the 2020 U.S. Presidential Election

ABSTRACT This study tests whether the consequences of cross-cutting exposure (CCE) to political news on affective polarization depend on the type of media individuals consume. Findings from the 2020 American National Election Studies panel data suggest that CCE to cable TV news, a medium frequently described as uncivil, may increase negative affect toward the out-party candidate, and that such effect may be mediated by feelings of anger and certainty in one’s political attitudes. These insights draw attention to elite incivility, in addition to citizens’ partisan predispositions, as a potential contributor to the growing affective divide in American politics.

Information Usage and Compliance with Preventive Behaviors for COVID-19: A Longitudinal Study with Data from the JACSIS 2020/JASTIS 2021.

The influence of different types of information sources on individual preventive behaviors remains unclear. We aimed to investigate the associations between individual information usage to obtain information about COVID-19 and compliance with preventive behaviors. This longitudinal study was based on an Internet survey conducted in August–September 2020 and February 2021. We used compliance with four preventive behaviors for COVID-19, “wearing a mask”, “ventilation”, “social distancing”, and “avoiding crowds” as outcome variables, and 20 types of information sources based on people or institutions (Medical worker, Government, etc.) and media (TV news, Twitter, etc.) as predictors. Absolute differences and 95% confidence intervals were estimated using generalized estimating equations adjusted for possible confounders. Among the 18,151 participants aged 20–79, the mean age was 51.7 (SD = 15.9) in 2020, and 51.3% were male. In total, compliance with “wearing a mask”, “ventilation”, “social distancing”, and “avoiding crowds” was seen in 86.2%, 46.9%, 45.4%, and 62.6% of individuals in 2020, and 89.3%, 38.2%, 47.2%, and 61.6% of individuals in 2021, respectively. In the multivariate analysis, “medical workers”, “professionals”, “the government”, “Twitter”, “news websites”, and “TV news” were positively associated with compliance with two or more preventive behaviors (p < 0.05). The type of information source may play an important role in providing information for COVID-19 prevention.

Abstract Television as a medium of marketing communication has a decreasing exposure rate among generation Z due to the increasing patronage on Internet-based communication. However, marketers could not fully shift into online platforms because of television’s high market reach attribute especially in the Philippines. Establishing awareness is a crucial work for unknown brands but repetition does not guarantee familiarity. A comparative analysis on the impact of energetic commercials on deactivating audiences was performed while this research aimed to identify the factors affecting Gen Z’s consumer perception towards television as an advertising medium. Data collection was done through survey questionnaires distributed to 385 respondents. Data were treated with statistical tools such as measures of central tendency, measures of variability and partial least square - structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM). The results revealed that Perceived Ease of Use is an insignificant variable to consumer perception. It was discovered that watching TV news, movies, series, and more is not usually preferred by consumers; they would rather stream online. However, Information Gratification is found to significantly influence consumer perception on TV as an advertising medium. Consumers get to know new products and brands when watching TV. The results of this study will mostly benefit advertising agencies because they will further understand the current perception of the generation on television advertising. Thus, more effective strategies concerning television advertising will be implemented. Models of TV news layout: Different types of marketing narrative

The study focuses on identifying and describing the layout models of leading Ukrainian TV channels, which were formed in 2004–2020 in connection with changes in audience demands, transformations of business models, and mastering the latest technologies. The news release is a marketing narrative about current events, mediated by narrators and language as a sign system. This paper aims to emotionally engage viewers and further communicate with them (including the consumption of television commercials). In 2019–2021, a rhetorical analysis of 531 news issues of the previously created sample of TV channels was performed. The semantic, structural, technological regularities and differences in the news layout are revealed. Based on a set of criteria (principles of selection and ranking of topics, methods of presenting information, broadcasting methods), the layout of the sample news is classified. Then a general description of TV news layout models is made. Five narrative models of the leading Ukrainian TV channels are substantiated: 1) hierarchical layout; 2) standard layout; 3) social layout; 4) stress layout; and 5) mixed layout. These models are related to the implementation of marketing tasks. Their understanding allows deepening the understanding of working with the audience, as well as improving news production in the television business.

Retracted: Artificial intelligence for public perception of drones as a tool for telecommunication technologies

AbstractDrones, a small aviation craft that can hold sensors and be directed to certain locations, have been explored and utilized in domains such as public safety, traffic monitoring, and healthcare. Yet, the scientific research of drone usage still in progress. This article investigates the following: (1) how the public perceives a drone as a healthcare tool, and (2) what the concerns are of public acceptance of drones in healthcare. A qualitative approach with demographic questions such as participants' age, education level, current knowledge of drones, as well as willingness to learn about the technology was used. The contribution is to have an understanding of how the public perceives drones. The results can be used in enhancing public views of drones through skilled personnel and an educated workforce. In a conservative community such as Saudi Arabia, the public holds a relatively positive attitude towards drones. Respondents are aware of such technology from different sources, mainly TV news. Informants also did show a decent level of perceived beneficial usage of drones in healthcare. There are few participants who disclosed concerns of safety, security, and privacy for the usage of drones in healthcare due to a lack of knowledge about the technology. The results propose that government and industry stakeholders should invest more in increasing public awareness of technology. Media coverage will likely influence the public view and help the community move forward.

Whom to trust? Media exposure patterns of citizens with perceptions of misinformation and disinformation related to the news media

This study tests how perceptions of misinformation and disinformation in one’s general news media environment relate to media trust and media consumption patterns, relying on survey data from 10 European countries. The results show that perceptions of misinformation and disinformation are both related to reduced trust in the news media. Furthermore, they go hand in hand with reduced consumption of traditional TV news, but with no changes in newspaper and (mainstream) online news use. Finally, those with stronger perceptions of misinformation and disinformation are more likely to consume news on social media and alternative, non-mainstream outlets. This pattern is stronger for those with higher perceptions of disinformation. These findings indicate that news users who distrust the veracity and honesty of the news media may turn to alternative outlets that reflect anti-establishment worldviews.

Changing our Roots: How Having Black Hair Shapes Student Perspectives on Pursuing Careers in Broadcast Journalism

Despite more acceptance for natural Black hair in the workplace nationwide, highly-skilled students of color hoping to enter broadcast journalism-related fields are often still deterred from pursuing their dream careers. This is due to concerns about the perception of their natural hair. Many broadcast journalism students report seeing mostly straight hair on TV - and that can be a discouragement to those whose looks don't conform. As students learn about the challenges Black women working in local TV news face, particularly when it comes to strict regulations on their hairstyles and hair textures, it can affect their enthusiasm for pursuing such careers. Focus groups conducted at the University of the District of Columbia and American University with broadcast journalism students highlight the importance of continuing to foster conversations and create policies that help to end hair-based discrimination, particularly in the field of broadcast journalism.

Indonesian TV anchors’ final -k sound shift: The nature and the cause

This study aimed, firstly, to observe the phonological change of the Standard Indonesian (SI), particularly the final-k syllabic pronunciation used in the journalistic videos aired between 1980 – 2019. Secondly, the study investigated the nature of the sound change by taking into account the theories of Lexical Diffusion. Lastly, the plausibly cause of the sound change was figured out, considering the sociolinguistic factors; orthographic re-regulation, post-colonial language policy, borrowing, and contacts. Methodologically, it is a diachronic study using a set of television news videos as the main source of data. A battery of findings from other related studies was employed to support the discussion on the nature and the reason for the sound change. The results show that the phonological shift of coda /ʔ/ ~ /k/ happened to most final -k syllabic words across the periods observed, but with varying degrees of rapidity, where the high-frequency words tend to be more sustained. The results also indicated that phonological shift of coda /ʔ/ ~ /k/ that occurred in the Indonesian TV-broadcast language was transferred from the Jakartan dialect, although some evidence of the 1972’s alphabetic writing system reformation also plays a considerable role in the TV News readers’ final -k sound shift.

Coroneologisms and Word Formation Processes in Hindi-English Codemixed Words

The COVID-19 pandemic came with a flux of new words, terminologies, and phrases, which led to the rapid coinage or neologisms in the world's different languages. These lexical innovations may take place within one language as well as with the combination of two different languages. Therefore, this paper scrutinizes coroneologisms and word-formation processes in Hindi-English code-mixed words. Such a phenomenon happened due to the acceptance of English by Indians besides their mother tongue which makes them bilingual. The data were gathered from newspapers, blogs, social media, TV news, etc. Next, the linguistic analysis of the data revealed different types of word classes in Hindi-English codemixed words such as compounding, affixation, blending, and reduplication. Out of these, compounding and borrowing were reported as the most productive types of coroneologisms in Hindi-English code-mixed words.

Impact of fake news, message and spam spread through social media on people decision making ability

In the early days of the Internet, people argued that the Internet would enable greater transparency of information, which would increase the quality of democracies. The availability of information from various news sources would enable people to find their own information from non-traditional news outlets, and this decreased reliance on a narrow set of traditional news sources would improve democracy. Some might argue that there has been a decrease in the quality of democracy due to pervasive fake news on social media. A recent editorial in Science calls on the scientific community to help reporters and the general public to better identify and avoid fake news Social media is different from other media providing news (e.g., TV news, news websites, and mobile phone news apps) because users do not choose the source of articles that they see on social media. Instead, proprietary algorithms provide targeted information with little transparency. With other news media, users pick the source first, and do so with a familiarity of the nature of the source. With social media such as Facebook, articles from a wide variety of sources appear on users’ newsfeeds. News articles are intermixed with sponsored articles (i.e., paid advertisements) and posts from family and friends. All of these may be intentionally or unintentionally true or false, but some are explicitly designed to influence People. About 23% of social media users report that they have accidently or intentionally shared fake news. Over 60% say that fake news leaves them confused about current events.

Application of User Generated Content by Television News’ during Pandemic

The revolution of technology has always shaped the works of journalism, including the news content and its relationship with the public. Along with the digital era, people started to participate in and contribute to journalism. User Generated Content (UGC) has regularly altered both information flows and the nature of news work for the mainstream media. By conducting a qualitative content analysis, this study tries to examine the use of UGC by 24-hour news TV channels in Indonesia in relation to the context of participatory journalism in the Covid-19 pandemic situation. The results of this study indicate that four 24-hour TV news channels in Indonesia are beginning to negotiate most of their ‘professional logic’ towards the logic of ‘adaptation’. Overall, framing analysis shows that news TV stations’ use of UGC has not optimally encouraged more constructive pandemic journalism practices.

Thinking, not talking, predicts knowledge level: Effects of media attention and reflective integration on public knowledge of nuclear energy.

By applying the cognitive mediation model, this study seeks to investigate factors influencing public knowledge of nuclear energy in Singapore. In addition, this study seeks to extend the cognitive mediation model by explicating the knowledge variable into four facets - general science knowledge, perceived familiarity, content nuclear knowledge and contextual nuclear knowledge. Using data collected from an interviewer-led door-to-door survey with 1000 Singapore citizens and permanent residents (PRs), we found that attention to TV news, website news and social media news stimulated news elaboration and interpersonal discussion. However, attention to print newspaper was neither associated with news elaboration nor interpersonal discussion. We also found that news elaboration could enhance factual knowledge such as general science knowledge, content nuclear knowledge and contextual nuclear knowledge, while interpersonal discussion could enhance perceived familiarity. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.

Six dimensions of analysis between broadcast and mobile devices in TV news’ language in covid-19 coverage

Resumo Este artigo propõe seis dimensões reflexivas sobre as alterações admitidas na linguagem telejornalística na cobertura dos primeiros meses de pandemia de covid-19. O percurso metodológico da pesquisa foi dividido em dois momentos: o primeiro foi de observação, coleta e seleção de reportagens em abril, maio e junho de 2020. Os exemplos ilustrativos foram selecionados qualitativamente por meio do Jornal Nacional, da Rede Globo. No segundo momento, à luz do referencial teórico, de telejornalismo e de jornalismo em dispositivos móveis, e de análise dos dados, foram sistematizadas as seis dimensões, que são a contribuição deste artigo, para pensar a convergência, a imbricação e a hibridização dos meios e linguagens. Como resultado, evidencia-se a dupla remediação, num fenômeno tão radical que por vezes apaga a própria mediação.

Problems and Countermeasures of TV News Broadcasting in the Era of Media Integration

With the development of science and technology, TV, as a kind of media, plays an increasingly important role in the national economic and social development. People know and understand the world and society through TV news. When people watch TV news, they are not only satisfied with listening to sound and watching pictures, but also pursue deeper spiritual satisfaction and aesthetic pleasure. Furthermore, the requirements of TV news announcers in all aspects are becoming higher and higher. This paper analyzes the problems of TV news broadcasting in the age of integrated media, and explores how to improve the quality of TV news broadcasting and meet the personalized needs of the public.

Demographic Effects on TV News Credibility: Perceptions in Bangladesh

There has been an enormous growth of TV channels in Bangladesh. As a result, TV news has become very popular among other programs. This study attempted to explore the variations in the perceived credibility of TV news in Bangladesh and how the joint distribution of constructs explaining credibility is affected by different demographic groups. The study concludes that gender and education level significantly impact overall credibility perceptions.
