Relationship between friction reduction effect and solubility in base oil of organic friction modifiers

This study explored the relationship between the solubility of additives in base oils and their friction-reduction efficacy using cetyl alcohol as a model additive. Atomic force microscope friction tests demonstrated that the friction-reduction effect of cetyl alcohol varied significantly across the base oils. The solvation free energy was computed to evaluate the solubility of cetyl alcohol. A direct proportional relationship between friction-reduction and solvation free energy was observed, indicating additives with lower solubility have better friction-reduction performance. Neutron reflectometry experiments and molecular dynamics simulations revealed that lower solubility correlates with stronger adsorption. This study quantitatively clarified the relationship between solubility, adsorption, and friction reduction, providing insights into optimizing lubricant formulations and contributing to a deeper understanding of boundary lubrication mechanisms.

Magnetic contrast layers with functional SiO2 coatings for soft-matter studies with polarized neutron reflectometry

This study introduces silicon substrates with a switchable magnetic contrast layer (MCL) for polarized neutron reflectometry (PNR) experiments at the solid–liquid interface to study soft-matter surface layers. During standard neutron reflectometry (NR) experiments on soft-matter samples, structural and compositional information is obtained by collecting experimental data with different isotopic contrasts on the same sample. This approach is normally referred to as contrast matching, and it can be achieved by using solvents with different isotopic contrast, e.g. different H2O/D2O ratios, and/or by selective deuteration of the molecules. However, some soft-matter systems might be perturbed by this approach, or it might be difficult to implement, particularly in the case of biological samples. In these scenarios, solid substrates with an MCL are an appealing alternative, as the magnetic contrast with the substrate can be used for partial recovery of information on the sample structure. More specifically, in this study, a magnetically soft Fe layer coated with SiO2 was produced by ion-beam sputter deposition on silicon substrates of different sizes. The structure was evaluated using X-ray reflectometry, atomic force microscopy, vibrating sample magnetometry and PNR. The collected data showed the high quality and repeatability of the MCL parameters, regardless of the substrate size or the thickness of the capping SiO2 layer. Previously proposed substrates with an iron MCL used an Au capping layer. The SiO2 capping layer proposed here allows reproduction of the typical surface of a standard silicon substrate used for NR experiments and is compatible with a large variety of soft-matter samples. This application is demonstrated with ready-to-use 50 × 50 × 10 mm substrates in PNR experiments for the characterization of a lipid bilayer in a single solvent contrast. Overall, the article highlights the potential of PNR with an MCL for the investigation of soft-matter samples.

Versatile pressure and temperature controlled cell for neutron reflectometry and small-angle neutron scattering

We have designed and realized a temperature and pressure controlled cell for Neutron Reflectometry (NR) and Small Angle Neutron Scattering (SANS) that is compatible with simultaneous optical transmission and resistivity measurements. The cell can accommodate samples up to 102 mm (4 inch) in diameter, can be pressurized from vacuum up to 10 bar gas pressure and the sample temperature can be controlled up to 350°C. The four single crystal quartz windows ensure both a good neutron and optical transmission and hence can be used in combination with in-situ optical transmission measurements. We present the cell and illustrate its performance with a series of neutron reflectometry experiments performed on Ta based thin films under a hydrogen containing atmosphere.

Towards natural care products: Structural and deposition studies of bio-based polymer and surfactant mixtures

Oppositely charged polymer-surfactant systems are expected to interact with formation of coacervate complexes near composition of charge-neutrality. Such behaviour is widely used in formulated products (e.g. household and personal care), where the co-deposition of coacervates and active ingredients on various surfaces is triggered by dilution. A transition towards the use of more sustainable ingredients is currently ongoing as a response to the need of more environmentally conscious choices in production, albeit slowed down by the often more complex and not fully understood bulk and interfacial behaviour of new ingredients. In this work, mixtures of a medium-chain fatty acid (sodium decanoate) and two grades of bio-based cationic modified inulin were studied. The phase behaviour was determined in a wide composition matrix. The formation of coacervate complexes was observed for the mixture with the higher charge density polymer at a surfactant concentration of 1–3 wt%, close to the surfactant critical micellar concentration in pure water. Such behaviour was confirmed by DLS and SAXS data, suggesting surfactant-polymer complexation in a concentrated phase of packed micelles with a micelle-to-micelle distance of ∼4.5 nm. In situ ellipsometry and neutron reflectometry experiments were conducted to study the effect on surface deposition when diluting. The ellipsometry showed an adsorbed mass of ∼1.3–1.9 mg/m2, consistent with the deposition of a coacervate layer, and considerably higher than the neat, adsorbed polymer layer of ∼0.3 mg/m2. In the case of the neutron reflectometry experiments, dilution was performed before contact with the surface (pre-mixing), and no adsorption of coacervates was observed, but rather the adsorption of a polymer layer (0.49–0.85 mg/m2). The different results obtained with the different techniques highlight the kinetic nature of bulk coacervate formation and deposition, and the competition between these two phenomena. Maximal deposition can be achieved if one can control this time window either by tuning the composition of the system or the experimental set-up, to mimic the conditions of a specific application.

Liquid Helium as a reference may provide clarity for some neutron reflectometry experiments1

Neutron reflectometry experiments infer the variation of the scattering length density of a smooth planar film as a function of depth averaged over the lateral dimensions of the sample from the intensity of a neutron beam reflected by the sample. Because the phase information of the neutron wave function is not preserved by an intensity measurement, most analyses rely on comparisons of data to predictions from models. Such comparisons do not provide unique solutions and can yield erroneous conclusions. A real-world example is provided. We show that in some limited cases, measurements of a sample immersed in the vapor and liquid phases of Helium may improve model selection.

Biologically inspired reinforcement using polydopamine of polymer bound composites

Interfacial strength plays a critical role in the mechanical properties of a composite system. In this work, a proven mock high explosive (HE), 5-iodo-2’-deoxyuridine (IDOX) was coated by the adhesive promoting polymer polydopamine (PDA), then formulated with an Estane binder system to form an improved HE mock composite. An extensive comparison study of mechanical properties was performed to determine the effects, if any, of PDA on the composite system. To aid in interpretation of the mechanical test data, neutron reflectometry experiments were performed to determine the thickness and structure of the as deposited PDA films. The mechanical performance of PDA-treated IDOX was then compared to untreated specimens by compression testing in the Brazilian disk geometry. The results strongly suggested that the structure of PDA consists of two layers: one low in density caused by polymer agglomerates attaching to the substrate during polymerization, and the second high in density caused by controlled linear deposition of polydopamine. The mechanical testing showed that PDA greatly increased the stiffness and yield strength of IDOX based mocks without causing any disruption to the underlying crystal system.

Probing the Separation Distance between Biological Nanoparticles and Cell Membrane Mimics Using Neutron Reflectometry with Sub-Nanometer Accuracy.

Nanoparticle interactions with cellular membranes are controlled by molecular recognition reactions and regulate a multitude of biological processes, including virus infections, biological nanoparticle-mediated cellular communication, and drug delivery applications. Aided by the design of various supported cell membrane mimics, multiple methods have been employed to investigate these types of interactions, revealing information on nanoparticle coverage, interaction kinetics, as well as binding strength; however, precise quantification of the separation distance across which these delicate interactions occur remains elusive. Here, we demonstrate that carefully designed neutron reflectometry (NR) experiments followed by an attentive selection and application of suitable theoretical models offer a means to quantify the distance separating biological nanoparticles from a supported lipid bilayer (SLB) with sub-nanometer precision. The distance between the nanoparticles and SLBs was tuned by exploiting either direct adsorption or specific binding using DNA tethers with different conformations, revealing separation distances of around 1, 3, and 7 nm with nanometric accuracy. We also show that NR provides precise information on nanoparticle coverage, size distribution, material composition, and potential structural changes in the underlying planar SLB induced upon nanoparticle binding. The precision with which these parameters could be quantified should pave an attractive path for investigations of the interactions between nanoparticles and interfaces at length scales and resolutions that were previously inaccessible. This thus makes it possible to, for example, gain an in-depth understanding of the molecular recognition reactions of inorganic and biological nanoparticles with cellular membranes.

Predicted Impacts of Graded Catalyst Layer Ionomer and Pt Distributions on PEMFC Performance

As the world moves away from a dependence on fossil fuels, it is crucial to develop cleaner replacement technologies for transportation, electricity production, and more. In regards to the transportation sector, fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) made with proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) provide much promise. These FCEVs offer high energy densities, long-distance ranges, and quick refueling times. Although companies like Toyota, Honda, and Hyundai already have some FCEVs in production, maintaining high levels of performance and durability in low-cost PEMFCs continue to limit the technology. Addressing this challenge has proven difficult due to complex coupled physiochemical resistances in the heterogeneous catalyst layer (CL).One method to further our understanding of PEMFC performance limitations is to model the device. These models should incorporate known physical processes and structures that occur in the CL, such as ionic and molecular transport, and electrochemical reactions. One complication of such a model is providing accurate parameters for species transport through nano-thin films of Nafion ionomer. Due to confinement, these thin-film polymers have been shown to have unique interfacial structuring and reduced water uptake with decreasing thickness [1,2]. Furthermore, the conductivity of these films has been shown to vary with local water content, temperature, and ionomer thickness – as the water absorption and composition change [2,3]. To capture these structure-property relationships, we developed numerical approximations for ionic conductivity and oxygen diffusion in our previous work [4]. The relationships are derived from quantitative measured structures from neutron reflectometry experiments along with separate conductivity measurements with thin-film Nafion.In this presentation, we extend our previous modeling efforts to incorporate two-phase transport. This allows for an analysis on the impacts of CL flooding. Additionally, the model has been updated to allow for novel CL microstructures – e.g. graded ionomer and Pt loadings. The graded designs concentrate higher loadings near the membrane and lower loadings near the gas diffusion layer in an attempt to lower molecular and ionic transport resistances. After validating the model against PEMFC data with low Pt loadings [5], physical processes are investigated to identify limiting phenomena. A parametric study on the performance of the graded microstructures is also completed. Preliminary results suggest that individually these graded CLs lead to reduced performance caused by higher levels of localized flooding or reduced ionomer conductivities. A microstructure with combined graded ionomer and graded Pt distributions however leads to improved performance over a uniformly loaded CL by simultaneously lowering ohmic overpotentials and reducing flooding. Optimizing experimental design in neutron reflectometry.

Using the Fisher information (FI), the design of neutron reflectometry experiments can be optimized, leading to greater confidence in parameters of interest and better use of experimental time [Durant, Wilkins, Butler & Cooper (2021). J. Appl. Cryst. 54, 1100-1110]. In this work, the FI is utilized in optimizing the design of a wide range of reflectometry experiments. Two lipid bilayer systems are investigated to determine the optimal choice of measurement angles and liquid contrasts, in addition to the ratio of the total counting time that should be spent measuring each condition. The reduction in parameter uncertainties with the addition of underlayers to these systems is then quantified, using the FI, and validated through the use of experiment simulation and Bayesian sampling methods. For a 'one-shot' measurement of a degrading lipid monolayer, it is shown that the common practice of measuring null-reflecting water is indeed optimal, but that the optimal measurement angle is dependent on the deuteration state of the monolayer. Finally, the framework is used to demonstrate the feasibility of measuring magnetic signals as small as 0.01 μB per atom in layers only 20 Å thick, given the appropriate experimental design, and that the time to reach a given level of confidence in the small magnetic moment is quantifiable.

Resonant neutron reflectometry for hydrogen detection

The detection and quantification of hydrogen is becoming increasingly important in research on electronic materials and devices, following the identification of the hydrogen content as a potent control parameter for the electronic properties. However, establishing quantitative correlations between the hydrogen content and the physical properties of solids remains a formidable challenge. Here we report neutron reflectometry experiments on 50 nm thick niobium films during hydrogen loading, and show that the momentum-space position of a prominent waveguide resonance allows tracking of the absolute hydrogen content with an accuracy of about one atomic percent on a timescale of less than a minute. Resonance-enhanced neutron reflectometry thus allows fast, direct, and non-destructive measurements of the hydrogen concentration in thin-film structures, with sensitivity high enough for real-time in-situ studies.

Low-background neutron reflectometry from solid/liquid interfaces

Liquid cells are an increasingly common sample environment for neutron reflectometry experiments and are critical for measuring the properties of materials at solid/liquid interfaces. Background scattering determines the maximum useful scattering vector, and hence the spatial resolution, of the neutron reflectometry measurement. The primary sources of background are the liquid in the cell reservoir and the materials forming the liquid cell itself. Thus, characterization and mitigation of these background sources are necessary for improvements in the signal-to-background ratio and resolution of neutron reflectometry measurements employing liquid cells. Single-crystal silicon is a common material used for liquid cells due to its low incoherent scattering cross section for neutrons, and the path lengths of the neutron beam through silicon can be several centimetres in modern cell designs. Here, a liquid cell is constructed with a sub-50 µm thick liquid reservoir encased in single-crystal silicon. It is shown that, at high scattering vectors, inelastic scattering from silicon represents a significant portion of the scattering background and is, moreover, structured, confounding efforts to correct for it by established background subtraction techniques. A significant improvement in the measurement quality is achieved using energy-analyzed detection. Energy-analyzed detection reduces the scattering background from silicon by nearly an order of magnitude, and from fluids such as air and liquids by smaller but significant factors. Combining thin liquid reservoirs with energy-analyzed detection and the high flux of the CANDOR polychromatic reflectometer at the NIST Center for Neutron Research, a background-subtracted neutron reflectivity smaller than 10−8 from a liquid cell sample is reported.

Interaction of Caffeine with Model Lipid Membranes.

Caffeine is not only a widely consumed active stimulant, but it is also a model molecule commonly used in pharmaceutical sciences. In this work, by performing quartz–crystal microbalance and neutron reflectometry experiments we investigate the interaction of caffeine molecules with a model lipid membrane. We determined that caffeine molecules are not able to spontaneously partition from an aqueous environment, enriched in caffeine, into a bilayer. Caffeine could be however included in solid-supported lipid bilayers if present with lipids during self-assembly. In this case, thanks to surface-sensitive techniques, we determined that caffeine molecules are preferentially located in the hydrophobic region of the membrane. These results are highly relevant for the development of new drug delivery vectors, as well as for a deeper understanding of the membrane permeation role of purine molecules.

Reflectometry and molecular dynamics study of the impact of cholesterol and melatonin on model lipid membranes.

The effect of melatonin and/or cholesterol on the structural properties of a model lipid bilayer prepared from 1,2-dioleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DOPC) has been investigated both experimentally and via molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Neutron reflectometry experiments performed with single supported membranes revealed changes in lipid bilayer thickness upon the introduction of additional components. While the presence of cholesterol led to an increase in membrane thickness, the opposite effect was observed in the case of melatonin. The results obtained are in a good agreement with MD simulations which provided further information on the organization of components within the systems examined, indicating a mechanism underlying the membranes' thickness changes due to cholesterol and melatonin that had been observed experimentally. Cholesterol and melatonin preferentially accumulate in different membrane regions, presumably affecting the conformation of lipid hydrophobic moieties differently, and in turn having distinct impacts on the structure of the entire membrane. Our findings may be relevant for understanding the effects of age-related changes in cholesterol and melatonin concentrations, including thosein the brains of individuals with Alzheimer's disease.

Determining the maximum information gain and optimizing experimental design in neutron reflectometry using the Fisher information.

An approach based on the Fisher information (FI) is developed to quantify the maximum information gain and optimal experimental design in neutron reflectometry experiments. In these experiments, the FI can be calculated analytically and used to provide sub-second predictions of parameter uncertainties. This approach can be used to influence real-time decisions about measurement angle, measurement time, contrast choice and other experimental conditions based on parameters of interest. The FI provides a lower bound on parameter estimation uncertainties, and these are shown to decrease with the square root of the measurement time, providing useful information for the planning and scheduling of experimental work. As the FI is computationally inexpensive to calculate, it can be computed repeatedly during the course of an experiment, saving costly beam time by signalling that sufficient data have been obtained or saving experimental data sets by signalling that an experiment needs to continue. The approach's predictions are validated through the introduction of an experiment simulation framework that incorporates instrument-specific incident flux profiles, and through the investigation of measuring the structural properties of a phospholipid bilayer.

First quantitative assessment of the adsorption of a fluorocarbon gas on phospholipid monolayers at the air/water interface

HypothesisFluorocarbon gases introduced above monolayers of phospholipids at the air/water interface were recently found to promote the adsorption of diverse molecular compounds, with potential application in drug-loaded microbubble design. Quantitative determination of the fluorocarbon present in the monolayers is strongly needed for the development of such applications. We hypothesized that neutron reflectometry (NR) and ellipsometry experiments would allow quantification of the fluorocarbon trapped in the monolayers. ExperimentsWe report the first quantitative determination of the extents of adsorption of perfluorohexane (F-hexane) on different phospholipid monolayers with respect to both their phase and isotopic form. To this aim, we applied an approach based on co-modeling the data obtained from NR and ellipsometry. FindingsWe found that F-hexane adsorbs strongly in monolayers of dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) when they are both in the liquid expanded (LE) and liquid condensed (LC) phases, but to different extents according to the isotopic form of the phospholipid. Kinetic resolution of the interfacial composition from data on both isotopic contrasts (assuming chemical identicality) was therefore not possible using NR alone, so an alternative NR/ellipsometry co-modeling treatment was applied to data from each isotopic contrast. F-hexane adsorbs more abundantly on monolayers of hydrogenous DPPC than chain-deuterated DPPC when they are in the LE phase, whilst the opposite was observed when they monolayers are in the LC phase. The extents of adsorption of F-hexane in monolayers of dimyristoylphosphatidylcholine (DMPC, LE phase) and distearoylphosphatidylcholine (DSPC, LC phase) concurs with the strong dependence of those with phospholipids of different isotopic contrasts according to the monolayer phase. This new methodology can lead to advances in the novel characterization of fluorocarbons interacting with phospholipid monolayers of relevance to applications such as in the shells of fluorocarbon-stabilized medically-oriented microbubbles.

Information gain from isotopic contrast variation in neutron reflectometry on protein-membrane complex structures.

A framework is applied to quantify information gain from neutron or X-ray reflectometry experiments [Treece, Kienzle, Hoogerheide, Majkrzak, Lösche & Heinrich (2019). J. Appl. Cryst. 52, 47-59], in an in-depth investigation into the design of scattering contrast in biological and soft-matter surface architectures. To focus the experimental design on regions of interest, the marginalization of the information gain with respect to a subset of model parameters describing the structure is implemented. Surface architectures of increasing complexity from a simple model system to a protein-lipid membrane complex are simulated. The information gain from virtual surface scattering experiments is quantified as a function of the scattering length density of molecular components of the architecture and the surrounding aqueous bulk solvent. It is concluded that the information gain is mostly determined by the local scattering contrast of a feature of interest with its immediate molecular environment, and experimental design should primarily focus on this region. The overall signal-to-noise ratio of the measured reflectivity modulates the information gain globally and is a second factor to be taken into consideration.

Design and realization of a sputter deposition system for the in situ and in operando use in polarized neutron reflectometry experiments: Novel capabilities

Recently, the design and realization of a sputter-deposition system for in situ and in operando polarized neutron reflectometry (PNR) was reported. The device allows magnetic thin films and heterostructures to be grown, while the sample remains aligned in the neutron beam for PNR. By now, it has been applied in experiments that investigated the magnetic and structural properties of thin Fe and Pd/Fe/Pd heterostructures as a function of the layer thickness. Here, we report on significant upgrades of the deposition system with advanced thin film growth and measurement capabilities. These include improvements to the generation of the vacuum to realize ultra-high-vacuum (UHV) conditions. A base pressure below 5 × 10−9mbar can now be obtained within less than one day of pumping time. To allow experiments over a wide range of temperatures, the system was upgraded to include a cryo-furnace. It allows the sample to be cooled or heated in the range of 10K to 1000K for both applications, sample growth and measurement. Further, a new magnetic coil setup with soft iron yoke was designed which can realize a homogeneous in-plane magnetic field of up to 300mT and electric fields at the sample position.

Effect of random anisotropy on magnetization reversal in dipolarly coupled layered thin films

Magnetic thin films and multilayers offer many novel physical phenomena with tremendous potential for applications. Various growth processes and methods are in place to make homogeneous films. However, dispersion in local easy axes is an inherent issue which may give rise to an effective random anisotropy in thin film. It is important to investigate the effect of random anisotropy on the magnetic properties of the thin films. In this report we address the aspect of local dispersion induced random anisotropy on magnetization reversal in ferromagnetic (FM)/non-magnetic(NM)/ferromagnetic(FM) stacks. We show that the magnetization reversal is not only governed by the inter-layer interaction but the intrinsic anisotropies also play a crucial role. In this context we have studied the magnetization reversal of Co/AlOX/Co trilayers with various thicknesses of AlOX which acts as a spacer between the two Co layers. Presence of random anisotropy in addition to growth induced uniaxial anisotropy was observed in all the samples. Magneto-optic Kerr effect (MOKE) based microscopy revealed dipolar-coupled layer-by-layer magnetization reversal of the Co layers which was corroborated by polarized neutron reflectometry (PNR) experiments. Micromagnetic simulations confirmed that the presence of random anisotropy in addition to uniaxial anisotropy leads to layer-by-layer magnetization reversal.

The antimicrobial peptide maculatin self assembles in parallel to form a pore in phospholipid bilayers

Little is known experimentally about the detailed orientation of membrane-bound maculatin 1.1 (Mac1), an antimicrobial peptide from the skin secretions of Australian tree frogs. In this work multiple 15N-labelled or 2H-labelled Mac1 with dodecylphosphocholine (DPC) micelles and isotropic DMPC/DHPC (q = 0.5) bicelles were investigated by solution NMR, circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy, neutron reflectometry and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations in explicit solvent. In buffer, the 15N-1H HSQC and CD spectra were indicative of the peptide being random coiled. In the presence of micelles or isotropic bicelles, a unique and helical peptide structure that was confirmed by CD was found. The titration of the soluble paramagnetic agent gadolinium (Gd-DTPA) into the Mac1-DPC solution led to enhanced relaxation of all 15N labelled residues. The peptide N-terminus was more exposed to Gd-DTPA than the C-terminus in micelles, while only the Gly-4 and Ala-18 resonances were significantly reduced in the presence of isotropic bicelles. MD simulations of Mac1 fully inserted into a DPC micelle converged towards a solvent exposed orientation and a topology where Mac1 was wrapped around the DPC micelle with the more hydrophobic side facing inward. MD simulations of Mac1 fully inserted into a phosphatidylcholine (PC) bilayer converged towards a kinked transmembrane orientation with water molecules penetrating around Lys-8. A deuterium labelled Mac1 used in neutron reflectometry experiments suggested a preferred orientation in zwitterionic PC bilayers. These results give insight into the membrane disrupting activity of Mac1 against cell membranes.

Layering of magnetic nanoparticles at amorphous magnetic templates with perpendicular anisotropy.

We reveal the assembly of magnetite nanoparticles of sizes 5 nm, 15 nm and 25 nm from dilute water-based ferrofluids onto an amorphous magnetic template with out-of-plane anisotropy. From neutron reflectometry experiments we extract density profiles and show that the particles self-assemble into layers at the magnetic surface. The layers are extremely stable against cleaning and rinsing of the substrate. The density of the layers is determined by and increases with the remanent magnetic moment of the particles.
