Milk production, methane emissions, nitrogen, and energy balance of cows fed diets based on different forage systems

Eight lactating Italian Friesian cows were housed in individual respiration chambers in a repeated Latin square design to determine their dry matter intake (DMI) and their milk and methane production, as well as to collect the total feces and urine to determine the N and energy balances. Four diets, based on the following forages (% of dry matter, DM), were tested: corn silage (CS, 49.3), alfalfa silage (AS, 26.8), wheat silage (WS, 20.0), and a typical hay-based Parmigiano Reggiano cheese production diet (PR, 25.3 of both alfalfa and Italian ryegrass hay). The greatest DMI was observed for cows fed PR (23.4 vs. 20.7 kg/d, the average of the other 3 diets). The DM digestibility was lower for PR (64.5 vs. 71.7%, the average of the other diets). The highest ash-free neutral detergent fiber digestibility values were obtained for CS (50.7%) and AS (47.4%). In the present study, no differences in milk production were observed between diets, although PR showed a higher milk yield trend. The highest milk urea N concentration (mg/dL) was found for the cows fed the WS diet (13.8), and the lowest was observed for the cows fed AS (9.24). The highest milk urea N concentration for the cows fed WS was also correlated with the highest urinary N excretion (g/d), which was found for the cows fed that same diet (189 vs. 147 on average for the other diets). The protein digestibility was higher for the cows fed the CS and WS diets (on average 68.5%) than for the cows fed AS and PR (on average 57.0%); dietary soybean inclusion was higher for CS and WS than for AS and PR. The rumen fermentation pattern was affected by the diet; the cows fed the PR diet showed a higher rumen pH and decreased propionate production than those fed CS, due to the lower nonfiber carbohydrate content and higher ash-free neutral detergent fiber content of the PR diet than the CS diet. Feeding cows with PR diet increased the acetate:propionate ratio in comparison with the CS diet (3.30 vs. 2.44 for PR and CS, respectively). Cows fed the PR diet produced a greater daily amount of methane and had a greater methane energy loss (% of digestible energy intake) than those fed the CS diet (413 vs. 378 g/d and 8.67 vs. 7.70%), but no differences were observed when methane was expressed as grams per kilogram of DMI or grams per kilogram of milk. The PR diet resulted in a smaller net energy for lactation content than the CS diet (1.36 vs. 1.70 Mcal/kg of DM for the PR and CS diets, respectively). Overall, our research suggests that a satisfactory milk production can be attained by including different high-quality forages in balanced diets without any negative effect on milk production or on the methane emissions per kilogram of milk.

Effects of high-starch or high-fat diets formulated to be isoenergetic on energy and nitrogen partitioning and utilization in lactating Jersey cows

The objective of this study was to determine the effects of high-starch or high-fat diets formulated to be isoenergetic on energy and N partitioning and utilization of energy. Twelve multiparous Jersey cows (mean ± standard deviation; 192 ± 11 d in milk; 467 ± 47 kg) in a crossover design with 28-d periods (24-d adaptation and 4-d collection) were used to compare 2 treatment diets. Treatments were high starch (HS; 30.8% starch, 31.8% neutral detergent fiber, and 1.9% fatty acids) or high fat (HF; 16.8% starch, 41.7% neutral detergent fiber, and 4.1% fatty acids). Diets were formulated to have net energy for lactation (NEL) content of 1.55 Mcal/kg of dry matter according to the National Research Council (2001) dairy model. Nutrient composition was varied primarily by replacing corn grain in HS with a rumen-inert fat source and cottonseed hulls in HF. Gross energy content was lower for HS (4.43 vs. 4.54 ± 0.01 Mcal/kg of dry matter), whereas digestible (2.93 vs. 2.74 ± 0.035 Mcal/kg of dry matter) and metabolizable energy (2.60 vs. 2.41 ± 0.030 Mcal/kg of dry matter), and NEL (1.83 vs. 1.67 ± 0.036 Mcal/kg of dry matter) content were all greater than for HF. Tissue energy deposited as body fat tended to be greater for HS (4.70 vs. 2.14 ± 1.01 Mcal/d). For N partitioning, HS increased milk N secretion (141 vs. 131 ± 10.5 g/d) and decreased urinary N excretion (123 vs. 150 ± 6.4 g/d). Compared with HF, HS increased apparent total-tract digestibility of dry matter (66.7 vs. 61.7 ± 1.06%), organic matter (68.5 vs. 63.2 ± 0.98%), energy (66.0 vs. 60.4 ± 0.92%), and 18-carbon fatty acids (67.9 vs. 61.2 ± 1.60%). However, apparent total-tract digestibility of starch decreased for HS from 97.0 to 94.5 ± 0.48%. Compared with HF, HS tended to increase milk yield (19.7 vs. 18.9 ± 1.38 kg/d), milk protein content (4.03 vs. 3.93 ± 0.10%), milk protein yield (0.791 vs. 0.740 ± 0.050 kg/d), and milk lactose yield (0.897 vs. 0.864 ± 0.067 kg/d). In addition, HS decreased milk fat content (5.93 vs. 6.37 ± 0.15%) but did not affect milk fat yield (average of 1.19 ± 0.09 kg/d) or energy-corrected milk yield (average of 27.2 ± 1.99 kg/d). Results of the current study suggest that the HS diet had a greater metabolizable energy and NEL content, increased partitioning of N toward milk secretion and away from urinary excretion, and may have increased partitioning of energy toward tissue energy deposited as fat.

Effects of Lavender (<i>Lavandula angustifolia</i>) augmentation of alfalfa silages

The aim of this study was to determine the chemical, fermentation, and microbiological properties of alfalfa silages that were augmented with lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) and to appraise their in vitro organic matter digestibility (IVOMD), metabolizable energy (ME), and net energy for lactation (NEL) contents. Lavender flowers were added to alfalfa silages at 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0% of the weight of alfalfa. An unaugmented alfalfa silage was also evaluated. After 75 day of ensiling, pH, dry matter, NDF and ADF contents of alfalfa silages had decreased and OMD had increased with the addition of lavender. No significant differences in crude protein, ash, ether extract, lactic acid, acetic acid, propionic acid, lactic acid bacteria number, ME and NEL contents were detected. No butyric acid, Enterobacteriaceae, Listeria spp, sulphide reducing anaerobes, and yeasts were found in the alfalfa silages. Mould content decreased with the addition of lavender. Thus, the addition of lavender flowers to alfalfa silages may improve their quality.

Morphological development, herbage yield and quality of Italian ryegrass during primary growth and regrowth: Regression models and yield optimisation

The main aim of this research was to establish simple regression models for predicting herbage production parameters during uninterrupted growth and to contribute to forage optimisation of Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) cultivated as an overwinter catch crop. The field experiment in split-plot design with two block replicates consisted of two growth cycles: primary growth (C1) and regrowth (C2) as the whole plots, and twelve time series with five-day intervals as the sub-plots. For each time point, herbage dry matter yield, mean stage by weight (MSW) and contents of crude protein (CP) and net energy for lactation (NEL) were determined. Growth days for all production parameters and MSW for quality parameters were used as explanatory variables. Considering the practically relevant 47-day growth period, simple linear regression models explained from 84.9% to 94.0% of the variance of the investigated parameters. These models are better than those performed for the whole 67-day period, except for the model for MSW-based prediction of CP content. The comparison of the two predictors showed that growth days were at least as good as MSW in predicting CP and NEL contents determined during C1 and C2. The effect of growth cycle on the patterns of all investigated parameters was significant, indicating that growth conditions played an important role. Based on our results, CP and NEL yield potentials of Italian ryegrass cannot be completely exploited in a double catch crop system if the required forage quality for lactating cows is to be respected. It rather suggests getting the maximal single harvest in early May, which is justified from nutritional and economical standpoints.

Evaluating rumen fermentation kinetics and nutritive value of sunflower seed meal supplemented with acetonic extract of pomegranate peel using <i>in vitro</i> gas production technique

This study was conducted to investigate effects of supplementing different levels (0.0, 0.5 and 1.0% of buffered rumen fluid) of acetonic extract of pomegranate peel on rumen fermentation kinetics of sunflower seed meal (SFM), using in vitro gas production technique. The samples were incubated in syringes containing rumen liquor obtained from three cannulated Iranian Ghezel rams for 2, 4, 6, 8, 12, 24 and 36h. Results indicated that, addition of acetonic extract of pomegranate peel resulted in increase in gas production volume in all of incubation times (p < 0.0001). Amount of gas production, also increased by increasing dose of the extract. Amounts of a (the gas production from the immediately soluble fraction), b (the gas production from the insoluble fraction) and a + b (the potential gas production) for pomegranate peel extract supplemented sunflower seed meal were higher (p < 0.05) than that of control meal. Adding pomegranate peel extract resulted in increase estimated short chain fatty acids (SCFA) production as well as digestible organic matter (DOM), metabolizable energy (ME) and net energy for lactation (NEL) content of SFM. Production of SCFA as well as DOM, ME and NEL content of SFM increased (p < 0.05) by enhancing the level of the extract supplementation. In conclusion, it can be suggest that, supplementing acetonic extract of pomegranate peel may be lead to higher ruminal fermentation and better nutritive value of SFM in ruminants.

Effect of dietary palygorskite on performance of lactating ewes

Twenty eight lactating Chios ewes were used in an experiment to determine effects of dietary activated micronized palygorskite (Pal; Sanfed® Ultra, Geohellas SA, Athens, Greece) supplementation on productivity and milk composition. In the experiment, which started on day 43 postpartum, ewes were allocated after equal distribution relative to milk yield and lactation number (i.e., 2 or 3), into 4 treatment groups being Pal0, Pal2.5, Pal5.0 and Pal7.5 of 7 ewes each and accommodated in individual pens. For a period of 60days (i.e., days 43–102 postpartum), ewes were fed one of four isonitrogenous (crude protein 175g/kg, dry matter (DM) basis) and isoenergetic (net energy for lactation (NEl) 7.69MJ/kg DM) concentrates (1.35kg DM/ewe/day) and alfalfa hay (1.02kg DM/ewe/day). The concentrate for treatment Pal0 (Control) had no Pal, while that for treatments Pal2.5, Pal5.0 and Pal7.5 contained 2.5, 5.0 and 7.5g/kg of Pal (as mixed basis), respectively. All ewes remained healthy until the end of the experiment without visually altered behavior. In the 60day experimental period, milk fat, crude protein and NEl contents were highest with the Pal5.0 treatment (P<0.01, P=0.01 and P<0.01, respectively). In contrast, milk lactose content was lowest (P<0.01) with the Pal2.5 treatment. With increased Pal feeding, milk fat and NEl yields were highest with the Pal5.0 treatment (P<0.01 and P=0.03, respectively), but milk yield and yields of other components, as well as milk somatic cell counts and colony forming units were not affected. Dietary Pal supplementation, at levels up to 5.0g/kg, in isonitrogenous and iso-NEl diets fed to lactating ewes increased milk fat and NEl yields and improved milk quality, increasing fat, crude protein and NEl contents, while, at higher level (7.5g/kg), dietary Pal supplementation did not affect milk yield and composition, with optimal Pal feeding levels identified between 3.4 and 4.0g/kg of concentrate.

Effect of dietary net energy concentration on dry matter intake and energy partition in cows in mid-lactation under heat stress.

This study aimed to determine the net energy requirement of Holstein cows in mid-lactation under heat stress. Twenty-five multiparous Holstein cows were randomly allocated to five groups corresponding to five isonitrogenous total mixed rations, with net energy for lactation (NEL ) content of 6.15 (NE-6.15), 6.36 (NE-6.36), 6.64 (NE-6.64), 6.95 (NE-6.95), 7.36 (NE-7.36) MJ/kg of dry matter (DM), respectively. Throughout the experimental period the average temperature humidity index at 07.00, 14.00 and 22.00 hours was 72.1, 88.7, and 77.6, respectively. DM intake decreased significantly with the elevated dietary NEL concentration. Fat corrected milk increased quadratically, and milk fat content and milk energy (MJ/kg) reached the greatest in the NE-6.95 group with increasing dietary NEL content. Strong correlations were found between dietary NEL content and: (i) DM intake; (ii) NEL intake; (iii) milk energy (El ); (iv) El /metabolizable energy intake (MEI); (v) El /NEL intake, as well as between NEL intake and fat corrected milk yield (FCM). The suitable net energy required for dairy cows producing 1 kg FCM ranged from 5.01 to 5.03 MJ, was concluded from the above-stated regressions. Correlation between heat production (HP) and MEI could be expressed as: Log (HP) = -0.4304 + 0.2963*MEI (n = 15, R2 = 0.99, Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) = 0.18). Fasting HP was 0.3712 MJ/kg0.75 when extrapolating MEI to zero.

Milk yield and milk composition responses to change in predicted net energy and metabolizable protein: a meta-analysis

Using a meta-analysis of literature data, this study aimed to quantify the dry matter (DM) intake response to changes in diet composition, and milk responses (yield, milk component yields and milk composition) to changes in dietary net energy for lactation (NEL) and metabolizable protein (MP) in dairy cows. From all studies included in the database, 282 experiments (825 treatments) with experimentally induced changes in either NEL or MP content were kept for this analysis. These treatments covered a wide range of diet characteristics and therefore a large part of the plausible NEL and MP contents and supplies that can be expected in practical situations. The average MP and NEL contents were, respectively (mean±SD), 97±12 g/kg DM and 6.71±0.42 MJ/kg DM. On a daily supply basis, there were high between-experiment correlations for MP and NEL above maintenance. Therefore, supplies of MP and NEL above maintenance were, respectively, centred on MP supply for which MP efficiency into milk protein is 0.67, and NEL above maintenance supply for which the ratio of NEL milk/NEL above maintenance is 1.00 (centred variables were called MP67 and NEL100). The majority of the selected studies used groups of multiparous Holstein-Friesian cows in mid lactation, milked twice a day. Using a mixed model, between- and within-experiment variation was split to estimate DM intake and milk responses. The use of NEL100 and MP67 supplies substantially improved the accuracy of the prediction of milk yield and milk component yields responses with, on average, a 27% lower root mean square error (RMSE) relative to using dietary NEL and MP contents as predictors. For milk composition (g/kg), the average RMSE was only 3% lower on a supply basis compared with a concentration basis. Effects of NEL and MP supplies on milk yield and milk component yields responses were additive. Increasing NEL supply increases energy partitioning towards body reserve, whereas increasing MP supply increases the partition of energy towards milk. On a nitrogen basis, the marginal efficiency decreases with increasing MP supply from 0.34 at MP67=−400 g/day to 0.07 at MP67=300 g/day. This difference in MP67 supply, assuming reference energy level of NEL100=0, equates to a global nitrogen efficiency decrease from 0.82 to 0.58. The equations accurately describe DM intake response to change in dietary contents and milk responses to change in dietary supply and content of NEL and MP across a wide range of dietary compositions.

The nutritive value of condensed wheat distillers solubles for cattle

The chemical composition and the energy and protein value of five batches of condensed distillers solubles (CDS) originating from wheat were determined. The net energy for lactation (NEL) was derived from digestion coefficients obtained with sheep. The true protein digested in the small intestine (DVE) and the rumen degradable protein balance (OEB) were based on the rumen degradation rate (kdD), the rumen undegradable fraction (U) and intestinal digestibility of undegraded protein (%DVBE) predicted by regression equations derived from a data set of 28 protein feeds with kdD, U and %DVBE determined in situ. The CDS is a by-product with a high, but very variable CP content (238 to 495 g/kg DM). The CP contained on average 81% amino acids, with glutamine as main component (on average 21.8% of CP) and a relatively good lysine proportion (3.0%). Further, CDS contains quite a lot of crude fat (mean±SD: 71±14 g/kg DM), glycerol (95±52 g/kg DM) and sugars (123±24 g/kg DM) resulting in a high organic matter digestibility (88.6±3.0%) and high NEL content (8.3±0.4 MJ/kg DM). The protein value showed a large variation, with DVE ranging from 122 to 244 g/kg DM and OEB from 50 to 204 g/kg DM. Wheat CDS is a rich source of minerals and trace elements with exception of calcium.

Forage yield and chemical composition of canola (Brassica napus L.) as affected by sowing methods

AbstractThe sowing method of spring‐type canola (Brassica napus L. var. oleifera) for forage has a major influence on its productivity and agronomic management. A field experiment was conducted in Matamoros, Coahuila, Mexico, during two growing seasons (2008–2009 and 2009–2010) to determine dry matter (DM), crude protein (CP) and net energy for lactation (NEL) yields, as well as canola forage chemical composition as a function of six sowing methods. The treatments assessed were broadcast sowing and five different row spacings: 0·19, 0·38, 0·57, 0·76 and 0·95 m (double row, 0·20 m apart). In the first year, with a mean growing season temperature of 17·2°C, sowing methods did not affect DM yield, but CP and NEL content and yield were higher in 0·19‐m row spacing. The mean temperature in the second year (13·5°C) was slightly lower than the long‐term mean (14·8°C) in the region, resulting in the highest DM (8840 kg ha−1), CP (2486 kg ha−1) and NEL yields (51 103 MJ ha−1) with 0·19‐m row spacing. In row‐sowing methods with over 0·19‐m row spacing, DM, CP and NEL yields decreased by 19·3–39·7, 20·4–42·1 and 21·2–42·7% respectively. Results indicate that sowing methods significantly affected canola forage productivity.

The use of clover-grasses in the structure of fodder crops grown on arable soil, especially those with intergeneric hybrids as the main component part, could avert the negative current trend, i.e. further decreasing the area of perennial fodder plants or fodder crops as a whole on arable soil. They have an irreplaceable role in crop sequences and in preserving the cultural character of the countryside, above all due to the fact that they improve soil fertility and microbial life in the soil and that they have an excellent pre-produce value, and, at the same time, they are applied in various farming systems (both conventional and ecological) and in various climatic conditions, and agricultural businesses are well equipped for growing, harvesting and storing them. In the Czech Republic, the area of fodder crops grown on arable soil was decreased from 1,019.9 thousand hectares to mere 396.7 thousand hectares between 1980 and 2009, which is 15.6 % of the total area of arable soil whereas perennial fodder plants only take up 8.5 %. Fodder from clover crops and clover-grass growths on arable soil are one of the main resources of voluminous fodder for dairy cows. Most of this fodder is preserved through a fermentation process (silages, hay storage); a smaller part is fed as fresh fodder, or serves for production of hay. Silages made with perennial fodder plants are the most important source of both proteins and other nutrients for ruminants, especially for high-yielding milch cows. The basis of fodder production systems are the conservative elements of the landscape area (geomorphology) in combination with the progressive elements (weather conditions, plants and human labour) and relict ones, the representative of which is the soil. The fodder production systems in Europe are divided into five main fodder production zones. From this point of view, the areas where short-term clover-grass mixtures are grown on arable soil could be classed with Zone 4, i.e. intensive fodder production and cattle breeding. This characterisation corresponds with the Vysočina Region (the Czech Republic), which is the focus of our work even though extensive breeding can be found in this area on a smaller scale as well. Therefore, our aim was to verify the production and qualitative parameters of the fodder crops and mixtures included in the test in chosen agricultural businesses in the Vysočina Region and to recommend the most suitable variant for the given area. A statistically significant correlative relationship (P &lt; 0.05) was proved between the net energy for lactation contents and the percentage of organic matter digestibility. The evaluation of the production parameters evidently shows the favourable influence of the grass component part or of intergeneric hybrids on the stability of dry matter yield per hectare as well as on the stability of individual nutrients.

Use of principal component analysis to classify forages and predict their calculated energy content

A set of 180 forages (47 alfalfa hays, 26 grass hays, 52 corn silages, 35 small grain silages and 20 sorghum silages) were randomly collected from different locations of the Po Valley (Northern Italy) from 2009 to 2010. The forages were characterised for chemical composition (11 parameters), NDF digestibility (five parameters) and net energy for lactation (NEL). The latter was calculated according to the two approaches adopted by the 2001 Nutrient Research Council and based on chemical parameters either alone (NEL3x-Lig) or in combination with 48 h NDF degradability in the rumen (NEL3x-48h). Thereafter, a principal component analysis (PCA) was used to define forage populations and limit the number of variables to those useful for obtaining a rapid forage quality evaluation on the basis of the calculated NEL content of forages. The PCA identified three forage populations: corn silage, alfalfa hay and a generic population of so-called ‘grasses’, consisting of grass hays, small grain and sorghum silages. This differentiation was also confirmed by a cluster analysis. The first three principal components (PC) together explained 79.9% of the total variation. PC1 was mainly associated with protein fractions, ether extract and lignin, PC2 with ash, starch, NDF and indigestible NDF (iNDF) and PC3 with NDF digestibility. Moreover, PC2 was highly correlated to both NEL3x-Lig (r = −0.84) and NEL3x-48h (r = −0.94). Subsequently, forage-based scores (FS) were calculated by multiplying the original standardised variables of ash, starch, NDF and iNDF with the scoring factors obtained from PCA (0.112, −0.141, 0.227 and 0.170, respectively). The FS showed a high determination coefficient for both NEL3x-Lig (R2 = 0.86) and NEL3x-48h (R2 = 0.73). These results indicate that PCA enables the distinction of different forage classes and appropriate prediction of the energy value on the basis of a reduced number of parameters. With respect to the rumen in situ parameters, iNDF was found to be more powerful at discriminating forage quality compared with NDF digestibility at different rumen incubation times or rates of NDF digestion.

Chemical composition and net energy content of alpine pasture species during the grazing season

The aim of this study was to investigate changes over time in chemical composition, digestibility and net energy for lactation (NEl) contents of 12 species of alpine pastures during the vegetative season ( i.e., Agrostis tenuis, Anthoxanthum alpinum, Carex sempervirens, Festuca rubra, Nardus stricta, Phleum alpinum, Poa alpina, Poa violacea, Alchemilla vulgaris, Leontodon hispidus, Potentilla aurea, Trifolium repens). Wild seeds were collected from plants spontaneously occurring in mountain pastures in North-East Italy and sown in a greenhouse. Plants were transplanted in open main field plots. Each main plot was divided into sub-plots, which were cut (first cut) in succession every 10 days in two consecutive years. Herbage regrowth (second cut) was evaluated at 45, 60 and 75 days after first cut. Herbage samples were analysed for chemical composition, for in vitro organic matter digestibility (OMD), and the NEl content was estimated. During the pasture utilisation period ( i.e., thermic sum between 500 and 1200 °C) the species had limited variation in their average CP contents (81–109 g/kg DM) excluding the lowest values of F. rubra and P. violacea (74 and 71 g/kg DM, respectively; P<0.05) and the highest value of T. repens (202 g/kg DM; P<0.05). Within grasses, there were very fibrous species (>700 g NDF/kg DM, such as F. rubra, N. stricta and P. violacea) and species with medium contents (573–664 g NDF/kg DM), while forbs and the legume specie had a low content (≤403 g NDF/kg DM). The OMD ranged from P. violacea (256 g/kg DM; P<0.05) to T. repens (730 g/kg DM; P<0.05). The highest NEl content was for T. repens (6.3 MJ/kg DM; P<0.05), while low NEl values were calculated for N. stricta and C. sempervirens (2.9 and 2.5 MJ/kg DM, respectively). The lowest (P<0.05) NEl content was estimated for P. violacea (1.9 MJ/kg DM). Most species investigated (in particular, Agrostis tenuis, F. rubra, L. hispidus, Potentilla aurea), had an initial intense decrease in the CP content with advancing season, reaching minimum levels at the thermic sum of 800–1000 °C. During season advancement, all species had increased NDF content, with marked increments for F. rubra and Poa species, and all species had decreased NEl contents. Regrowth samples collected at 75 days after first cut had lower CP and NEl contents relative to those collected after 45 days from the first cut (140 g/kg versus 160 g/kg DM and 4.4 MJ/kg versus 4.8 MJ/kg DM, respectively; P<0.05). This study provides nutritional information on individual herbage species of alpine pastures at different vegetative phases which can be used to obtain average nutritional values of use in pasture management work.

Comparison of the National Research Council Energy System for Lactating Cows with Four European Systems

The structure, prediction steps, and accuracy of the US (NRC), United Kingdom (ARC), Dutch (VEM), French (UFL), and German (NEL) systems for feeding high producing cows were compared. Simulations were made using 15 feeds ranging from hays to cereals. Agreement was satisfactory among European systems for the prediction of metabolizable energy and net energy for lactation (NEL) contents of feeds and the quantities of feeds in balanced diets necessary to meet the energy requirements of lactating cows. The metabolizable energy and NEL contents of feeds seemed overestimated by the US system compared with results using the European systems, and the ratio of NEL to total digestible nutrients was almost constant, unlike the other systems. Estimating the NEL content of feeds for a level three times maintenance intake allowed satisfactory rationing for the production of 20 to 25kg of fat-corrected milk/d. However, feed allowances seemed underestimated for higher milk production, especially with diets based on hay, probably because of the overestimation of feed NEL content, the underestimation of level of feeding, and the effects associated with feeding levels>3 and high concentrate diets.

A Statistical Evaluation of Animal and Nutritional Factors Influencing Concentrations of Milk Urea Nitrogen

Data from 35 trials with 482 lactating cows fed 106 diets were used to study the effects of animal and dietary factors on the relationship between milk and blood urea N and the value of milk urea N in the assessment of protein status. In two trials, urea N in whole blood and in blood plasma were closely related (r2=0.952); the slope was not significantly different from 1.0, and the intercept was not significantly different from 0. Regression of milk urea N on blood urea N with a mixed effects model using all 2231 observations yielded the equation: milk urea N (milligrams of N per deciliter)=0.620×blood urea N (milligrams of N per deciliter) + 4.75 (r2=0.842); this model accounted for a significant interaction of cow and blood urea N. Single factors that yielded significant regressions on milk urea N with the mixed effects models were dietary crude protein (CP) (percentage of dry matter; r2=0.839), dietary CP per megacalorie of net energy for lactation (NEL) (r2=0.833), excess N intake (r2=0.772), N efficiency (r2=0.626), and ruminal NH3 (r2=0.574). When all factors were analyzed at once, 12 were significant in a mixed effects model. Blood urea N, body weight, yield of fat-corrected milk, dietary CP content, excess N intake, dry matter intake, and days in milk were positively related to milk urea N, and parity, milk and fat yield, dietary CP per unit of NEL content, and NEL intake were negatively related to milk urea N. In one trial, the mean urea concentration was 35 times greater in urine than in milk; lower proportions of total urea excretion in milk were observed in the a.m. sampling (1.8%) than in the p.m. sampling (3.3%). Measuring urea N in a composite milk sample from the whole day substantially improved reliability of data. The number of cows fed a specific diet that must be sampled to determine mean milk urea N within 95% confidence intervals with half widths of 1.0 and 2.0mg of N/dl was estimated to be 16 and 4, respectively.
