Ghana's Cocoa; Farmers' Perceptions of Climate Change and Its Effect on Yield and Livelihood

This study investigates the perceptions of cocoa farmers in Offinso and Adansi Districts, Ghana, regarding the impact of climate change on their yields, income, and food security. The findings aim to inform policy development and potential mitigation and adaptation strategies. A total of 282 cocoa farmers participated alongside Key Informants. The results indicate a strong consensus among farmers that climate change has negatively affected their yields (0.518 ± 0.501), increased pest and disease prevalence (0.518 ± 0.501), and contributed to cocoa tree mortality (0.482 ± 0.501). This perception is reinforced by the ranking of challenges, where poor yields and increased pest/disease emerged as the most prominent challenges (Relative Importance Index of 0.87 and 0.79, respectively). Interestingly, farmers' perceptions diverged regarding food security. They expressed neutrality towards statements suggesting a negative climate change impact on their food security status (Perception Index = 2.89). These findings highlight the critical challenge of reduced cocoa yield due to climate change for farmers. It is therefore recommended that the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD), through its extension division, implement immediate actions to educate farmers within the two districts on climate change mitigation strategies. This intervention aligns with achieving the Sustainable Development Goals 1 (No Poverty), 2 (Zero Hunger), and 13 (Climate Action). Estimating the benefits of floodplain restoration to juvenile Chinook salmon in the upper San Francisco Estuary, United States, under future climate scenarios

Many river systems within the Central Valley of California have been disconnected from their floodplains, hypothesized to be partially responsible for declining Chinook salmon populations (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha). The primary floodplain of the system, Yolo By‐Pass (known regionally as “Yolo Bypass”), offered an opportunity to examine whether improved connectivity between the floodplain and river could limit negative climate change effects on salmon populations. Specifically, the top of the floodplain (Fremont Weir) is being modified to provide Sacramento River Chinook salmon better access to floodplain rearing habitat. We estimated restoration effects on the Yolo By‐Pass flood regime now and under future climate scenarios using flow rating curves. Additionally, we used temperature and flow‐specific effects on Chinook salmon population dynamics within the Yolo By‐Pass and Sacramento River complex to describe how the restoration project and climate change may interact to affect juvenile Chinook salmon biomass production. Our results indicate that the Fremont Weir restoration project will extend the frequency, timing, and duration of Yolo By‐Pass flooding. Our production model indicates that the modification will result in greater salmon entrainment rates into the Yolo By‐Pass, where salmon growth rates, survival rates, and biomass production were higher when compared to the Sacramento River main stem. The project appears to benefit all regional runs of Chinook salmon, which should help support life history diversity. Our results suggest that the weir modification should benefit native fish from the Central Valley that use floodplain habitat and that these benefits may be resilient to challenges created by a changing climate.

The Efficiency of Financing Environmental Protection Measures in the Context of Ukraine’s Future Membership in the EU

In recent decades, humanity has had a significant negative impact on the environment. This problem can be solved only by establishing a rational environmental management policy and ensuring an effective financial policy in the context of balancing emissions and expenditures on environmental protection measures. The purpose of this article is to analyze the efficiency of financing environmental protection measures by determining the dependence of pollutant emissions on environmental protection expenditures in Ukraine and the European Union. The following methods were used for the study: analysis, synthesis, generalization, comparison, specification, and statistical and graphical methods. The statistical information was systematized on the basis of open data from the Open Budget web portal, the State Statistics Service, and Eurostat. This study identified the dynamics of revenues from environmental taxes in Ukraine; taxes on air emissions prevail. Most of the expenditures are made from the state budget. According to the functional classification, environmental expenditures are mainly aimed at preventing and eliminating environmental pollution. The dynamics of capital investments in environmental protection were also studied. To assess the effectiveness of the state policy in the field of environmental protection, we analyzed the dependence of pollutant emissions in Ukraine, Poland, and Romania on the amount of environmental expenditures and investments in this area and revenues from environmental tax. In Ukraine, the amount of pollutants released into the atmosphere depends mostly on investments in this area; in Poland—on revenues from environmental taxes; and in Romania—on expenditures on environmental protection. It has been established that the obtained models are adequate and can be used to build future forecasts of pollutant emissions. Directions for the development of financial and environmental policy are proposed. Post-war restoration of the environmental situation should be carried out on the basis of sustainable development, focusing on the European Green Deal A triple-task approach should be implemented, including environmental restoration, the minimization of negative climate change and balanced use of resources, and the expansion of powers of the relevant ministry with a focus on the strategic goals of the state policy. It is necessary to develop methodological recommendations according to international standards to assess the real state of the environment.

Recruit, retain, repair: Toward diversity in the North Carolina Music Educators Association

In this article, I examine data generated from a 2020 survey of the North Carolina Music Educators Association (NCMEA) and data on North Carolina public school students and teachers as the focal point for a discussion about diversifying the music teaching profession and music educator association (MEA) membership. Statistical data indicated a significant difference between the racial identity profile of NCMEA membership and that of NC public school students, NC public school teachers, and NC-certified public school music teachers. In each case, statistical differences were driven by an underrepresentation of NCMEA members who identified as Black. The data also showed a significant difference in gender based on NCMEA section membership. Open response data suggested music teachers of color may have disengaged from NCMEA due to a negative organizational climate. Given these data, I discuss policy implications for MEAs to support diversifying membership and improving organizational culture.

Family Climate as a Mediator of the Relationship between Stress and Life Satisfaction: A Study with Young University Students.

The family environment has a significant influence on the personality development of young people and their assessment of life satisfaction. Perceived stress is related to life satisfaction, but this relationship is also influenced by the family context. The present study analysed the impact of perceived stress on life satisfaction and the mediating role of family climate in university students. A sample of 920 university students was recruited for this study. The instruments used included the Perceived Stress Scale, the Satisfaction with Life Scale, and the Family Social Climate Scale, and socioeducational information was collected. The results indicate that perceived stress had a significant and positive effect on both conflictive and violent family climates, while life satisfaction was negatively impacted by these negative family climates. Additionally, supportive and cohesive family climates, along with difficulty expressing feelings and opinions, were found to have significant positive effects on life satisfaction. These findings highlight the importance of the family system in shaping individual conditions and how it can regulate the relationship between stress and life satisfaction.

This survey was conducted in order to explore the views of primary school principals and parents regarding their participation in children"s school life. The sample of the survey consists of 6 primary school principals in Greece and 6 parents whose children attend these schools. The results of the survey showed a positive interaction relationship, which nevertheless shows room for improvement. The principals consider the parents as equal partners in the prosperity of the school with their meetings taking place at regular intervals. The disproportionality in the number of parents-principal as well as the daily challenges that arise affect the frequency and quality of their meetings. In addition, negative attitudes and lack of interest on the part of parents create barriers to communication, thus creating a negative climate.

Impact of three decades of warming, increased nutrient availability, and increased cloudiness on the fluxes of greenhouse gases and biogenic volatile organic compounds in a subarctic tundra heath.

Climate change is exposing subarctic ecosystems to higher temperatures, increased nutrient availability, and increasing cloud cover. In this study, we assessed how these factors affect the fluxes of greenhouse gases (GHGs) (i.e., methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O), and carbon dioxide (CO2)), and biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs) in a subarctic mesic heath subjected to 34 years of climate change related manipulations of temperature, nutrient availability, and light. GHGs were sampled from static chambers and gases analyzed with gas chromatograph. BVOCs were measured using the push-pull method and gases analyzed with chromatography-mass spectrometry. The soil temperature and moisture content in the warmed and shaded plots did not differ significantly from that in the controls during GHG and BVOC measurements. Also, the enclosure temperatures during BVOC measurements in the warmed and shaded plots did not differ significantly from temperatures in the controls. Hence, this allowed for assessment of long-term effects of the climate treatment manipulations without interference of temperature and moisture differences at the time of measurements. Warming enhanced CH4 uptake and the emissions of CO2, N2O, and isoprene. Increased nutrient availability increased the emissions of CO2 and N2O but caused no significant changes in the fluxes of CH4 and BVOCs. Shading (simulating increased cloudiness) enhanced CH4 uptake but caused no significant changes in the fluxes of other gases compared to the controls. The results show that climate warming and increased cloudiness will enhance CH4 sink strength of subarctic mesic heath ecosystems, providing negative climate feedback, while climate warming and enhanced nutrient availability will provide positive climate feedback through increased emissions of CO2 and N2O. Climate warming will also indirectly, through vegetation changes, increase the amount of carbon lost as isoprene from subarctic ecosystems.

Positive effects of intercrop yields in farms from across Europe depend on rainfall, crop composition, and management

Modern “intensive” agriculture drives the biodiversity-climate crisis but is also central to global food security. Future farming needs management approaches that maintain (or even enhance) food production while reducing negative climate and biodiversity impacts. Intercrops could provide part of the solution, increasing biodiversity and boosting production with fewer inputs. However, barriers remain to their wide-scale uptake, in particular tailoring intercrops to local equipment, management practice, and environment. We analyze data from multiple trials of cereal-legume intercrops conducted on farms across Europe between 2018 and 2021. Our study is the first attempt, to our knowledge, to quantify the yield benefits of cereal-legume intercropping undertaken at commercially relevant scales for farms across Europe. We used crop performance ratio (CPR)—the ratio of the observed intercrop yield compared to the expected yield based on monoculture yields—as our metric of intercrop performance. Using CPR, we found a roughly 30% yield gain across all sites. However, CPR was modulated by a number of factors. CPR was not strongly affected by management except for the negative effects of direct drilling and the positive effects of organic fertilizer addition. CPR also depended on intercrop composition (number and identity of components), background yields (being highest where yields were lower), and rainfall (being higher with higher rainfall). Our findings allow us to reduce uncertainty about how intercrops will perform in realistic local farm conditions, give guidance for tailoring intercrops to local farming conditions, and provide key goals for further work to integrate intercrops into sustainable farming systems.

Associations between negative patient safety climate and infection prevention practices

The relationships among positive perceptions of safety climate and better healthcare worker behaviors have been increasingly documented in the literature. The potential influence of negative perceptions is underexplored and has not been examined in relationship to infection prevention practices. We begin to address this gap using data collected as part of a multi-site, cross-sectional study. This brief report describes associations identified between negative perceptions of patient safety climate and standard precaution adherence of hospital-based nurses.

Academic Freedom and Patterns of Self-Censorship in Psychology Education in Turkey

Background The recent academic purge in Turkey eventuated by a twin wave starting in January 2016 was unprecedented. Two years of statutory rule after the July 2016 failed coup further damaged the rule of law. Even the legal authorities did not respect fundamental human rights. Psychology faculty had to keep a low profile to avoid further encroachments. Objective The purpose of this study was to assess the extent to which psychology faculty discerned research and teaching-bound sociopolitical risks and exercised mitigation strategies. Method Sixty-three faculty responded to a questionnaire assessing risk appraisals and mitigation appeals countering threats to their research and teaching. Results Faculty remained inactive against high-risk appraisal in research and appealed to avoidance or vagueness when their risk appraisals were moderate. By contrast, avoidance was the primary strategy, compared to vagueness or inaction, in risk-bearing teaching. Conclusion Faculty try to cope with the adverse negative intellectual climate by being highly selective in their research and teaching. They appeal to differential strategies in either domain. Teaching Implications Research in risk apprehension and mitigation along with studies highlighting shared experiences may inform psychology departments on how to proceed under antagonistic circumstances.

School belonging mediates the association between negative school climate and depressive symptoms among Chinese adolescents: a national population-based longitudinal study

BackgroundA negative school climate is an important factor affecting students’ mental health. However, few studies have focused on the mechanisms underlying the relationship. This study aimed to explore the mediating effect of school belonging on the association between negative school climate and depressive symptoms among Chinese adolescents, using a nationwide longitudinal survey.MethodsWe conducted a longitudinal study using data from the 2013 (T1) and 2014 (T2) waves of the China Education Panel Survey (CEPS). A negative school climate was assessed by school administrators’ reports. School belonging and depressive symptoms were evaluated using adolescents’ self-reports. We used a cross-lagged panel model to explore the mediating effect of school belonging on the association between negative school climate and depressive symptoms, adjusting for a set of covariates.ResultsIn total, 7,049 Chinese adolescents with a mean age of 12.9 years were included in this study. The results of the cross-lagged model showed that negative school climate at T1 was significantly negatively associated with school belonging at T2 (β = −0.089, 95%CI = −0.111–−0.067, p < 0.001), and was positively associated with depressive symptoms at T2 (β = 0.032, 95%CI = 0.012–0.054, p = 0.002). In addition, school belonging at T1 was significantly negatively associated with depressive symptoms at T2 (β = −0.025, 95%CI = −0.050–−0.001, p = 0.045). Mediation analysis showed that school belonging played a mediating role in the association between negative school climate and depressive symptoms (β = 0.002, 95%CI = 0.001–0.005, p = 0.041).ConclusionAmong Chinese adolescents, a negative school climate is associated with a greater risk of depressive symptoms. Improving school belonging may be helpful in decreasing the impact of a negative school climate on depressive symptoms in adolescents.

Grandparents' and domestic helpers' childcare support: Implications for well‐being in Asian families

AbstractObjectiveTo investigate whether childcare support from grandparents and domestic helpers is associated with family well‐being in Singapore, with a focus on parent and child psychological well‐being as well as the quality of interactions and relationships within the family.BackgroundResearch on the implications of childcare support from maternal grandparents, paternal grandparents, and domestic helpers for family well‐being remains a gap in the literature. This involvement could enhance family well‐being through instrumental assistance and emotional encouragement in childcare. However, it could also create a negative emotional climate for families if the relationship of the mother with the grandparents or domestic helper is marked by conflict.MethodThis study used questionnaire data from 615 mother–child dyads from the birth cohort, Growing Up in Singapore Towards healthy Outcomes. The exposure variable was children's caregiving arrangements assessed at child ages 4.5 and 6 years, and the outcome variables were maternal well‐being, maternal parenting, and family functioning measured at concurrent assessments, and child well‐being assessed at age 10 years.ResultsChildcare support from maternal grandparents, but not from paternal grandparents or domestic helpers, showed concurrent associations with warmer parenting by mothers at child ages 4.5 and 6 years. Early childcare support from domestic helpers at child age 6 years predicted higher depressive symptoms in children at age 10 years.ConclusionOur findings suggest that childcare support from maternal grandparents, who are most likely to share a close bond and value system with mothers, could be most beneficial for families in Singapore.

How does narcissistic leadership influence change-oriented organizational citizenship behavior? Empirical evidence from China

Based on conservation of resources theory and the work–home resources model, this study examines how and when narcissistic leadership influences employees’ change-oriented organizational citizenship behavior. A total of 363 employees from 61 teams across numerous enterprises based in central China were surveyed using a questionnaire. The study hypotheses were tested using structural equation modeling and Monte Carlo simulation analysis. The findings revealed that narcissistic leadership results in the development of a negative team climate, termed “team chaxu climate,” which, in turn, hinders employees’ change-oriented organizational citizenship behavior. Furthermore, this study explored the moderating role of leaders’ family affective support in the relationship between narcissistic leadership and team chaxu climate. This study contributes to our understanding of the relationship between narcissistic leadership and employee organizational citizenship behavior and empirically validates the work–home resources model.

Towards a regenerative shift in tourism: applying a regenerative conceptual framework toward swimmable urban rivers

Regenerative tourism is a transformational approach to healing relationships between tourism, places and communities. Several urban rivers are being made swimmable (again) to mitigate against negative climate effects, promote urban health and liveability and contribute to the city’s tourism potential. This paper examines the application of a regenerative tourism conceptual framework (RTCF) to the Swimmable Birrarung/Yarra River (SB2030) initiative in Narrm, Melbourne, Australia and the dynamics among the key initiative stakeholders. Swimming is applied to catalyse regenerative transformations of the city’s main waterway. Tourism’s contributions to regenerating the river and its community are examined. The RTCF is tested for the development and implementation of a transdisciplinary action research project involving the river, civil society, academic, Indigenous, business, and government actors. Analysis of the SB2030 initiative shows that extractive approaches dominate tourism’s approach to the river but also that tourism can play a critical role in supporting the regenerative development of the river and its community. Rather than a type of tourism, it positions tourism’s core purpose as a contributor to the regeneration of social-ecological systems. Evidently, other sectors must create conditions suitable for tourism to support the multi-systems urban river regeneration impetus. This paper contributes to the discursive developments of regenerative tourism applications and informs urban regenerative development transformations.

Timing and pattern of the Devonian Nehden event: Implication for the biotic recovery following the F–F extinction event

The biotic recovery process following the Frasnian–Famennian (F–F) mass extinction played an important role in reestablishing the late Palaeozoic marine ecosystem. The Nehden event is assumed as the global biotic recovery process in the aftermath of the F–F mass extinction, but the timing and pattern of this event is still in dispute due to lack of consistent geological records. In order to recognize the Nehden event and elucidate its timing and pattern, a newly refined conodont biostratigraphic framework spanning the Palmatolepis minuta minuta Zone to the Pa. rhomboidea Zone (370.8–367 Ma) has been established in the Yangdi section, Guangxi, South China. Based on a detailed analysis of microfacies and carbon isotope of carbonates (δ13Ccarb), the start of the Nehden event has been placed at the upper part of the Pa. m. minuta Zone, marked by deposition of calcareous shales and proliferation of palmatolepid conodonts and ostracods. Two episodes of the Nehden event are recognized in this study according to integrated palaeontological, sedimentological, and geochemical data from South China and other continents. The first phase of the Nehden event is assigned at the upper part of the Pa. m. minuta Zone, characterized by radiation of conodonts, ostracods, and brachiopods, which is coincident with the minimum value of negative δ13Ccarb excursion and climate warming. The second phase is placed at the Pa. termini to Pa. glabra pectinata zones, documented by biodiversification of cheiloceratid ammonoids and phacopid trilobites, which is concurrent with climate warming and the maximum transgression during the early Famennian. The extensive development of microbial bindstone in the lower Famennian succession at Yangdi demonstrates that microbial communities occupied the vacant ecological niches left behind by metazoans after the F–F biotic crisis. The expansion of ecological niches of microbial communities and depauperation of metazoan reefs implies the bioconstructor turnover from metazoan to microbial communities following the F–F extinction. The time equivalence of biotic radiation, climate change and sea-level fluctuation in two episodes of the Nehden event indicates the early Famennian biotic recovery was favored by climate warming and transgression. The results in this study not only offer important data to constrain the timing of the Nehden event, but also provide an insight on the process of biotic recovery following the F–F mass extinction event.

Ranking genotype, environment, management effects on the optimum nitrogen rate for maize: A cropping system modeling analysis

AbstractRanking the contribution of genotype, environment, and management (G × E × M) on maize's economic optimum nitrogen fertilizer rate (EONR) variability could improve understanding and predictability of EONR. We performed a simulation experiment using the Agricultural Production Systems sIMulator model with the objectives to (1) rank the effects of 24 individual G × E × M factors on the magnitude and interannual variability of the EONR across the US Midwest and (2) investigate the impact of G × M factors on the EONR variability under present and future climate scenarios. Results indicate that genetics (27%), management (31%), and environmental conditions (41%) each influence the EONR variability. Within these broad categories, the top three individual factors impacting the EONR were interannual weather variability, crop radiation use efficiency, and the soil inorganic N carryover from the previous year. The G × E × M factors influenced the yield response to N fertilizer in different ways. Soil‐related factors (e.g., organic matter and residual nitrate) influenced grain yields at the low N rates, while management factors (e.g., planting date and density) influenced yield at all N rates. Combining increases in plant density and changes in genetics synergistically increased the EONR by 15% from baseline. Future climate scenarios without adaptation decreased the EONR and yield loss, but crop adaptation was buffered against the negative climate change impacts. We concluded that 59% of the annual EONR variability is manageable (due to genetics and management) and that G × M factors could buffer climate change's negative effects on crop production. Present results can inform experimental research on N fertilizer and N rate decisions.

Unfavorable prison social climate links dark tetrad traits with self-reported institutional misconduct

The Dark Tetrad traits (Machiavellianism, narcissism, psychopathy, and sadism) are associated with various adverse and destructive social outcomes. However, the data about the functioning of dark personalities in institutional settings are relatively scarce. In the present research we analyzed the links between Dark Tetrad traits, the prison social climate (measured by prisoners' quality of life) and institutional misconduct (assessed by the number of disciplinary corrections, special measures, solitary confinements, and control measures) in a sample of Serbian convicts (N = 582). Our main hypothesis was that negative prison social climate mediates the link between Dark Tetrad and institutional misconduct. Correlation and regression analysis showed negative association between the Dark Tetrad and prison social climate, together with negative links between social climate and institutional misconduct; associations between Tetrad traits and misconduct were positive. The best predictor of misconduct was the prison social climate but Machiavellianism and sadism independently contributed to the prediction as well. Finally, the structural model showed that negative prison social climate represents a mediator in the links between Machiavellianism, sadism and institutional misconduct. Therefore, our main hypothesis was confirmed, but only for Machiavellianism and sadism as the Dark Tetrad traits. The current data reveal novel socially-aversive outcomes of the Dark Tetrad traits and depict personality and contextual factors that can be practically important for enabling the better functioning of convicts in the prison wards.

Isotopic Evidence for Degradation of Particulate Black Carbon in the Ocean

AbstractBlack carbon (BC) has emerged as an integral part of the global carbon (C) cycle, constituting 12% ± 5% of the organic C pool in rivers and soils, with the potential to generate negative climate feedback. However, its ability to sequester C depends on the recalcitrant nature of BC in the environment, which is under debate. Using CTO‐375 method and by measuring concentrations and isotopic compositions of particulate BC (δ13CPBC), we explore the transformation of particulate black carbon (PBC) along the atmosphere‐river‐ocean continuum. Significantly high δ13CPBC in the ocean compared to rivers and atmospheric particulate matter indicates (a) degradation of PBC, potentially through photodegradation and leaching, and/or (b) availability of an enriched source other than fluvial or aeolian inputs. This evidence for degradation of PBC in aquatic systems warrants rethinking on its C sequestration potential and role in aquatic C biogeochemistry and further raises concerns regarding the use of sedimentary BC as a paleoenvironmental proxy.

Can you picture it? Effects of positive and negative depictions of climate futures on climate action intentions

Media messages about climate change are often negative, depicting dire future consequences if action is not taken. While the fear elicited by such messages may motivate audiences, there is growing evidence that hope is also an important driver of engagement in climate action. We conducted a pre-registered experiment with U.S. adults to examine how depictions of positive and negative climate futures (separately and in combination) impact climate action intentions through emotions, counterarguing, and ability to imagine a positive future. We also examined collective efficacy and government efficacy as moderators. Findings shed light on the under-researched impacts of positive climate messaging, revealing benefits as well as risks. Moreover, results highlight the potential for counterarguing to hinder desirable responses to climate futures messaging, offer insights into effects of messages featuring both positive and negative elements, and point to the importance of audiences’ pre-existing government and collective efficacy beliefs in the processing of climate messages.

This thesis explores the relationship between organizational climate and job satisfaction, aiming to provide insights into how organizational factors impact employee satisfaction levels. Through a comprehensive review of existing literature and empirical research, this study examines the various dimensions of organizational climate and their influence on job satisfaction. The research methodology involves surveys and interviews conducted within diverse organizational settings to gather data on employees' perceptions of the organizational climate and their levels of job satisfaction. The findings reveal a strong correlation between positive organizational climates characterized by open communication, supportive leadership, opportunities for growth and development, and high levels of job satisfaction among employees. Conversely, negative organizational climates marked by ineffective communication, autocratic leadership, and a lack of recognition and reward systems are associated with lower levels of job satisfaction and increased turnover rates. Furthermore, this thesis investigates the mediating role of factors such as employee engagement, organizational commitment, and perceived fairness in the relationship between organizational climate and job satisfaction. Understanding these underlying mechanisms can provide organizations with actionable insights to enhance employee satisfaction and foster a positive work environment.
