The authors present new results of neutron scattering experiments on the magnetic structure of the layered antiferromagnet Rb2MnF4. The results show mixed stacking patterns of spin arrangements along the axial c direction, that is udud. . ., uuuu. . . and uuduud. . . (u=up, d=down), below its Neel temperature. A possible interpretation for this novel phenomenon is that it is due to the competition between antiferromagnetic nearest-neighbour exchange interaction and long-ranged ferromagnetic dipolar interactions in the axial c direction, which would give rise to the staircase behaviour.
