The Many Republics of Hunger

This article is the Sixth Sam Moyo Memorial Lecture delivered by Professor Utsa Patnaik during the SMAIAS/ASN Summer School on January 16, 2023, in Harare. Professor Patnaik argues that the discourse in development economics is so completely dominated by fallacious ideas emanating from the conservative economics departments of universities in advanced industrial countries, and economists in the Global South tend to be so completely hegemonized by these fallacious ideas that they pay little or no attention to long-term trends in their own economies that impact adversely the welfare of the poorest of their own populations. A most important long-term trend—to be precise, the trend over the last four decades of neoliberal policies—has been the declining per capita consumption of food grains in countries of the Global South, associated with their increasing opening up to free trade under the incessant pressure of industrial nations.

Brickwork in Norway: tradition encounters a new age of industrial construction, 1905–1912

During the first decades of the twentieth century, construction technology experienced rapid developments, which also affected industrial buildings. This paper demonstrates this evolution between 1905 and 1912 through the case of the Rjukan and Notodden UNESCO World Heritage site in central southern Norway. The site was established for the purpose of producing synthetic nitrogen fertiliser by the company Hydro. There, building systems changed from timber frames with brick infill to pure brick bearing walls and finally to more sophisticated wall-braced cage buildings where steel was incorporated. Increasing the structural capacity was the answer to the growing demand for higher and larger industrial buildings. This case study presents the characteristics and establishes an initial account of the types of construction systems. Embedded steel that is concealed within brickwork can be subject to corrosion and compromise structural integrity. Studying these systems and materials in greater detail and identifying conservation issues will support future repair work. The studied buildings reveal also that used systems were not unique to this remote mountain area, but the technology used was in line with developments in leading industrial nations around the world. This places the site also in an international context of architecture and engineering history.

Problems And Solutions of Real Estate Industry in China

Since real estate industry is one of the national pillar industries in China, therefore, it has great contributions to China’s economy and society. for example, promoting the Chinese economic growth in the long-run, and it provide financial support to government and benefits for cities development. Secondly, real estate also helping the development of relevant business, creating large amount of job opportunities to society, for residents, they can enjoy higher living standard. However, at same time of rapid development of real estate industry and economic boost, they exist series of problems that harmful to society like real estate bubble, unfinished buildings and cooperates financing difficulties. aiming at these problems, this paper suggest that government can through promulgate some new policies, laws, and establish the compete financing channel mechanism to solve these kinds of problems. The target of this study is to help real estate industry in China keep healthy development.

‘Anyone Can Put On Clothes, Right?’: Costume Design and Styling as Women’s Work in Dutch Media Production

Over the last thirty years, the frustrations of women working in costume design and styling in the Dutch film and television industry with their poor working conditions and lack of recognition have grown strong enough to now culminate in a form of collective resistance. At the cusp of what might be a turning point, this article locates the key developments that have led to this moment at the intersection of the peculiarities of this national media industry, the way costume design and fashion are culturally rendered shallow and feminine, and the repercussions of gender for this trade. It suggests that the grassroots collectivisation of costuming staff in the Dutch media industry challenges the postfeminist tendency to individualise workers’ problems.

Multi-hazard, multidimensional disaster risk validation in selangor’s three urban districts, Malaysia

Considering the increasing impact of natural hazard-related disasters in Malaysia, understanding and evaluating integrated disaster risk must consider multi-hazard and multidimensional vulnerability at the local level, particularly in developing industrial nations like Malaysia. Therefore, this study proposes an improved methodology for conducting an integrated disaster risk assessment index (IDRI) mapping to measure disaster risk within local administrative boundaries in Malaysia. In this study, multi-hazard spatial overlapping combined two common hazards in Malaysia, which are floods and landslides. This study used multidimensional vulnerability, which encompasses six dimensions, 16 subdimensions, and 54 indicators. Researchers applied this approach in three urban districts of Selangor, Malaysia: Sepang, Kuala Langat, and Hulu Langat, which are located within the Langat River catchment and consist of 17 subdistricts. Overall, 32.9% of the total study area was found to be at risk, with 4.3% in the very high-risk area. In comparison with the latest flood events in 2021, the IDRI components were highly correlated with disaster impact. In conclusion, the contribution of this study provides a novel perspective on disaster risk assessment by addressing several types of hazards and multidimensional vulnerability, as compared to the previous methodology focusing on a single hazard and a physical vulnerability factor.

LINI HULU PRODUKSI SAWIT INDONESIA: PERSPEKTIF RANTAI PASOK

Smallholder oil palm plantations are still facing the challenge of solidity in increasing their collective action to influence the supply chain of the national and global palm oil industry. This study aims to analyze the upstream system of smallholder palm oil production in building the sustainability of the supply chain of the national palm oil industry from a supply chain perspective. The data collection method combines an empirical study approach and literacy. An empirical study was carried out to search for institutional portraits of farmers. Furthermore, the search for commodity flows and palm oil agro-industry actors was carried out using a supply chain scheme framework. Based on the discussion, it is concluded that the disclosure of the flow of information related to the volume, price, and supply value differs according to the stakeholders involved. The supply chain of upstream palm oil production starts from the production line of oil palm plantations to the fabrication of CPO/PKO and the fabrication of their derivatives. Oil palm farmers are the weakest parties in accessing prices, volumes, and purchasing capacity information. Independent and plasma oil palm plantation smallholders are the most vulnerable to problems of uncertainty, transparency, transaction costs, and institutions, as well as the determination of an undisclosed price share between the cooperative as an intermediary and the core company. The downstream supply chain of palm oil agroindustry (olein, biodiesel, and chemical industry) is dominated by stakeholders affiliating with national private plantation companies within the framework of vertical supply synergies. CPO/ PKO palm derivative processed agroindustry, which has no vertical affiliation with national plantation companies on the upstream side, was the weakest actor in dealing with uncertainty in the supply of raw materials.

Firm Heterogeneity and India’s Manufacturing Exports: Lessons on Protection and Trade Theory

ABSTRACT Empirical examinations of heterogeneity among Indian manufacturing firms provide helpful lessons for trade theories and policies. Using descriptive statistics of cross-section data for 2011, 2015, and 2019, the asymptotic Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney test, and regression analysis, the study reveals that firms are heterogeneous within each 4-digit National Industrial Classification (NIC) category, exporting firms are more productive than non-exporters, and exporter premia decline with trading activities. The study concludes that recent protectionist policies reduced extensive trade margins, firm heterogeneity, and productivity in the Indian manufacturing sector.

Self-transcendence: Design Criticism in the 1928 Shanghai Exhibition of National Products

Abstract After establishing the Shanghai port in 1843, Western machine-made products inundated the Chinese consumer market, disrupting the local Chinese economic system. To foster the advancement of national industries, the Nanking nationalist government held the Ministry of Industry, Commerce, and Labour’s Exhibition of National Products in 1928, providing a platform for public discourse on the design of national products. This article analyses the progression of three representative types of early design criticism that emerged from the Exhibition of National Products. These criticisms examined the design’s economic benefits, responsiveness to cultural needs, and influence on shaping social consensus. Their progressive development can be characterized as a form of self-transcendence, indicating a move by critics beyond past limited understandings of the value, sphere of influence, and design’s role in society. Their focus transitioned from the economic interests of minorities to the diverse needs of broader social groups. In the process of self-transcendence, these design criticisms expanded the horizons of designers’ work. They facilitated collaborations between design and various industries, including production, consumption, and education, influencing broader socioeconomic and ideological fronts.

Evaluating the Efficacy of Cosmetic Product Safety Regulations in Malaysia: The Role of the National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Agency (NPRA) and Industry Compliance

Various legislative measures, such as the Sale of Drugs Act 1952, Control of Drugs and Cosmetics Regulations 1984, Poison Act 1952, Guidelines for Control of Cosmetic Products 2022, and other directives introduced by the NPRA in Malaysia, are intended to control the safety of cosmetic products. Despite these existing laws and directives, cosmetic products containing hazardous ingredients persist in the Malaysian market. NPRA reportedly received 1,041 complaints about cosmetic products in 2022, while its website also displays an annual increase in cases involving cosmetic products that contain hazardous ingredients. The persistent presence of harmful cosmetic products in the market highlights significant gaps in efforts to control hazardous cosmetic products. This study examined the efficacy of cosmetic product safety regulations in Malaysia, focusing on the role of the National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Agency (NPRA) and industry compliance. This qualitative study gathered data from library databases and conducted semi-structured interviews with NPRA officers, cosmetic manufacturers, and cosmetic industry experts. Findings suggest that despite the extensive nature of the regulatory framework, its implementation, which heavily relies on self-regulation and post-market surveillance, requires serious improvement. While some cosmetic producers adhere to Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) standards, there are still persistent issues related to product notification, misuse of self-regulation, and inadequate penalties for non-compliance. Therefore, an intensive awareness campaign aimed at cosmetic manufacturers is necessary to ensure the production of safe cosmetic products. Consumers must play their role in helping the NPRA control the sale of hazardous cosmetic products by performing safety checks before purchasing them.

Quality inspection method of BIM model for power grid engineering based on knowledge graph

With the continuous updating of national specifications and industry standards, the traditional manual compliance review method is difficult to meet the needs of the development of the construction industry. This study aims to improve the quality review method of BIM models by using knowledge graph technology. The BIM model of power grid engineering is selected as the research object, and a BIM model inspection system based on knowledge graph is developed to verify whether it complies with the relevant specifications and standards of power grid engineering. By taking the BIM model of an electrical engineering project as a case, an inspection report was generated, and the results verified the feasibility and practicality of this method. This technology provides a new direction for the deep integration of architectural design and information technology.

The Kinomatics Australian Film Production Dataset: A Curated Dataset Describing Australian Feature Film Titles and Personnel 1975–2022

Abstract This article presents a novel, extensive, and thoroughly documented dataset describing Australian feature films and the personnel filling ten key production roles on those films. The dataset is curated from public information in multiple sources and draws on further supplemental resources to verify, validate and consolidate this information. In total, the data describes 22,720 roles filled by 9,397 distinct people across 1,877 films, covering an important 47-year period in the Australian film industry. The authors outline how the dataset solves several problems for scholars interested in data that provides a historical record of the collaborative filmmaking process. In particular, to address concerns about known coverage problems with popular sources such as the Internet Movie Database, this dataset has undergone extensive manual checking to ensure that it is reliable as a source of information on a national film industry. Moreover, the authors have carefully and manually linked each person appearing in the dataset, which allows the dataset to provide a rich source of information for exploring the relationality of filmmaking collaborations. The inclusion of ten key filmmaking roles further expands the utility of the dataset beyond existing datasets which tend to focus on actors and/or directors, writers and producers.

Labor Market Effects of Workweek Restrictions: Evidence from the Great Depression

We study the effects of restrictions on the length of the workweek under the President’s Reemployment Agreement (PRA) of July 1933 and the National Industrial Recovery Act. We construct a model in which the equilibrium without such a workweek restriction has an inefficiently low level of employment. We find that employment rose by about 24 percent in the month following the imposition of the workweek restriction. Industries with longer workweeks pre-PRA experienced 9.4 percent faster growth in hourly earnings post-PRA, but this increase was not sufficient to prevent a relative fall in weekly earnings in these industries. Forecasting Tingkat Kesehatan dan Ketahanan Perbankan di Indonesia

The number of commercial banks in Indonesia after the 2008 global crisis declined. The decrease in this number was caused by mergers, consolidations, acquisitions, integrations and conversions in the context of forming a resilient national banking industry structure. To ensure a stable banking sector, these banks must be evaluated through a Risk-based Bank Rating. When the 2008 global crisis economic shock and the COVID-19 pandemic occurred, the banking intermediary function was disrupted. In these conditions, the financial performance of banks also experienced a decline. This study aimed to assess the bank rating and resilience of banks in 2008-2020, forecast the bank rating and resilience of banks in Indonesia in 2021-2030 and analyze the effect of bank rating on bank resilience. This study used secondary data, that is a annual financial reports published by the Financial Services Authority. The data was analysed by ARIMA and panel data regression. The results showed that the bank rating and resilience of commercial banks declined during the economic shocks of the 2008 global crisis and the 2020 Covid pandemic. It is predicted that the resilience of commercial banks will increase in 2021-2030. Earnings as measured by ROA had a positive effect on bank resilience. Credit risk (NPL) had a negative effect on resilience, while liquidity risk (LDR) showed a positive effect on the resilience of commercial banks in Indonesia. GCG and Capital had no effect on bank resilience

Manufactured Goods on Display: Japanese Woodblock Prints at the National Industrial Exhibitions of 1877 and 1881

Abstract This article examines the presence of Japanese woodblock prints within the context of state-sponsored exhibitions during the Meiji era (1868–1912). Although the Meiji government organized five National Industrial Exhibitions at irregular intervals, woodblock prints were exclusively showcased at those organized in 1877 and 1881. This article identifies the woodblock prints wherever possible, and addresses questions relating to their role in advancing (Western) exhibition culture, the emergence of modern education, and the growing concern over the impact of popular prints on the future and the reputation of Japanese fine and decorative art.

O PAPEL DAS COMPRAS PÚBLICAS EM DEFESA COMO O NOVO VETOR DE DESENVOLVIMENTO NACIONAL

This article discusses the importance of the defense industry as a driver of innovation and economic growth in the country. With the intensification of geopolitical challenges and the need to modernize the Armed Forces, Brazil has invested in acquisitions that encourage research and technological development. The proposed research analyzes how these strategic public purchases can not only strengthen military capacity, but also stimulate national industry, generating skilled jobs and promoting technology transfer. Collaboration between the government and the private sector is essential to maximize the benefits of these acquisitions, allowing technological advances to have a positive impact on various sectors such as health, energy and transport. In addition, these defense acquisitions can serve as an industrial policy tool, guiding investments in priority areas and contributing to the country's strategic autonomy. In this context, the research aims to demonstrate how defense acquisitions and orders are an essential vector for economic and technological development, with the potential to transform industrial capacity and national competitiveness in a global scenario.

Implementasi Data Mining Prediksi Penjualan Produk Semen Menggunakan Metode Linear Regression (Studi Kasus PT. Toyo Mortar Indonesia)

The cement industry in Indonesia plays a vital role in infrastructure development and the construction sector. PT. Toyo Mortar Indonesia, established in 2015 in the Tangerang industrial area, focuses on the production of instant mortar cement. However, the national cement industry faces the challenge of declining sales due to the pandemic, which has affected people's purchasing power and slowed down property and infrastructure projects. To achieve future growth potential, the right strategy is needed in sales planning. This study implements data mining using the linear regression method with the RapidMiner application to predict cement product sales. The data used includes historical sales data and product information from PT. Toyo Mortar Indonesia. In the tests conducted, the data was processed using 12 variables, of which 10 variables influenced the prediction results: TM-168, TM-178, TM-188, TM-189, TM-198, UM-100, UM-101, UM BIRU, raw materials, and other sales. The test results show that the Linear Regression method can predict cement product sales with an average Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) value of 493,125.701 with a standard deviation of 126,330.525. The average Absolute Error is 303,270.965 with a standard deviation of 46,207.586, and the average relative error is 1.89% with a standard deviation of 0.36%, indicating very good prediction accuracy. This can help the company in making decisions related to sales planning using the available sales data.

Use of Digital Technologies for the Conduct of Work in the Government System Based on the Demans of the Current Times

This article deals with the issues of ensuring the safety of the population in the residences of citizens. It is planned to implement an electronic platform that allows for quick collection and analysis of information on the technical and social condition of residential areas. These strategies focus on digital transformation in the national economy, industry, and society. In Uzbekistan, significant steps have been taken to implement modern information and communication technologies (ICT) in public administration, education, healthcare, and agriculture. One notable challenge addressed in this study is the management of carbon monoxide poisoning, fire hazards, and explosions during the heating season. The research highlights the limitations of manual data collection, including the risk of data loss, difficulty in locating information, and inefficiencies in processing critical safety data. The program processes data in less than a minute, facilitating more efficient emergency management and preventive measures. This system exemplifies the role of digital technology in enhancing public safety and optimizing government operations.

Energy self-sufficiency and carbon neutrality potential of Chinese urban wastewater treatment

The implementation of some energy-saving and emission reduction measures can effectively offset the energy consumption and carbon emissions in the wastewater treatment process. Integrated policy-making information on carbon-energy-economy of these technologies is not clear in national wastewater treatment industry. This study investigated energy self-sufficiency, carbon neutralization potential and economic performance of wastewater treatment industry, as well as related synergy effect among the three aspects using the proposed approach. Then the approach was used to investigate energy-saving and carbon emission reduction potential of the three technologies (photovoltaic power (PV), combined heat and power (CHP) and water source heat pump (WSHP)) and technological combinations as well as related economic performance in urban wastewater treatment of Chinese different provinces in 2021. The results showed that (1) The national energy self-sufficiency is 95%; therein, 13 provinces have the potential to achieve or exceed energy self-sufficiency of 100%, and the top 3 provinces are Heilongjiang, Yunnan and Hunan. (2) The national carbon neutral potential is 87%; therein, 9 provinces have the potential to achieve or surpass carbon neutralization of 100%, and the top 3 provinces include Beijing, Hunan and Shaanxi. (3) these technologies or their combinations are potentially economically viable (net economic benefit ratio >1), and the top three provinces are Beijing, Shaanxi, and Inner Mongolia. (4) Generally, there are 13 provinces with synergy effect >1 in the country; the top three provinces are Liaoning, Heilongjiang and Hunan. Finally, targeted policy suggestions are provided for Chinese urban wastewater treatment. The proposed approach can also act as one of decision-making tools for wastewater treatment industry in other countries or areas in the world.

Design of Integrated System for the Comprehensive Utilization of Yellow River Sediment-Sealing Machine Structure and Control System Design

With the development of national industrialization, the control of yellow-river sediment needs to develop a complete automatic treatment system. In this paper, the structure and control system of the sealing machine in the integrated system design of the yellow river sediment comprehensive utilization are designed. Firstly, the overall design scheme of the sealing machine is determined, then, the structure and working principle of the sealing machine are introduced in detail. The design part of the actuator is defined. Secondly, finite element analysis is carried out for some of the stressed parts. The results show that the sealing machine system runs normally, the structure is not deformed and damaged, and it can work continuously for 12~16 hours, and the woven bag with sand can be successfully sealed. The sealing machine can not only save manpower and material resources, but also has the characteristics of simple operation and high efficiency. However, affected by the size of the equipment, it can only work in the factory or a large flat site.

DEVELOPMENT OF PROJECT DOCUMENTATION FOR WELL CONSTRUCTION WITH THE USE OF MPD TECHNOLOGY

In traditional drilling technology, in order to prevent gas and oil-water blowouts, the pressure in the well should exceed the reservoir pressure by 5–10 % in static conditions, depending on the depth. However, in case of catastrophic sinking, drilling of highly permeable formations, narrow drilling windows in zones of abnormally high pressures such a safety method, on the contrary, often makes it impossible to drill the well. Today there are special systems to control the pressure in the well during deepening and circulation stops for drilling in difficult geological conditions. Their work is based on high-precision control of pressure in the annulus and its regulation at the sealed wellhead by means of an automatic choke in combination with a Coriolis flow meter. In static conditions, the required pressure is maintained either by an additional pump or by a nitrogen injector.Development of well construction projects requires reference to industry specific normative documents regulating the methodology of work, equipment selection and defining the minimum list of other technical and technological solutions necessary for quality and safe drilling operations. However, despite the fact that the technology of drilling with controlled pressure in different variations has been used in Russia for twenty years, there are still no regulatory documents summarizing the entire domestic experience of its application and regulating the procedure of drilling operations with controlled pressure. Their absence leads to certain technical risks and difficulties in passing departmental expert reviews of project documentation.This article analyses the rules and recommendations for well construction using managed pressure drilling technology contained in national industry regulatory documents, highlights the problems arising in the development of the technical part of the design and estimate documentation for the construction of similar wells, and gives recommendations on the composition of a regulatory document that could summarize national and foreign experience of managed pressure drilling.
