Advancement in Carbon Nanoparticle Synthesis and Their Application: A Comprehensive Review

The global population gradually increase at an alarming state, which would increase demand for food globally. This increasing use of pesticides and fertilizers. In order to meet this demand, an overview of the numerous applications of nanotechnology for agriculture. Various nanomaterials like nanofertilizers and pesticides enhance soil fertility and crop productivity. However, excessive chemical fertilizer use as per FAO, 2017. Among these, the nanotechnology has wide range of applications in healthcare and medicines, diagnosis etc. Recently, carbon nanoparticles (CNPs) play a significant role in various fields. Carbon nanoparticles (CNPs) represent innovative nanostructures. These can be synthesized by different methods, green synthesis as well as chemical synthesis such as arch discharge method, laser ablation method, chemical vapour deposition method etc. The advancement of CNPs entails the exploration of diverse synthetic techniques and exploration of various application due to their chemical and physical properties in healthcare, agriculture (for delivery of agrochemicals) etc. These are also used in plant growth enhancement and resistance to stresses. However, challenges related to precisely defining CNP structures and ensuring property uniformity remain inadequately addressed and lack detailed study. In this review article we emphasize methodologies for the synthesis of CNPs by various chemical methods and also include their applications in therapeutics, pharmaceuticles, sensing and agriculture.

Nanotechnology for Pain Management.

Introduction: In the context of the current opioid crisis, non-pharmacologic approaches to pain management have been considered important alternatives to the use of opioids or analgesics. Advancements in nano and quantum technology have led to the development of several nanotransporters, including nanoparticles, micelles, quantum dots, liposomes, nanofibers, and nano-scaffolds. These modes of nanotransporters have led to the development of new drug formulations. In pain medicine, new liposome formulations led to the development of DepoFoam™ introduced by Pacira Pharmaceutical, Inc. (Parsippany, NJ, USA). This formulation is the base of DepoDur™, which comprises a combination of liposomes and extended-release morphine, and Exparel™, which comprises a combination of liposomes and extended-release bupivacaine. In 2021, Heron Therapeutics (San Diego, CA, USA) created Zynrelef™, a mixture of bupivacaine and meloxicam. Advancements in nanotechnology have led to the development of devices/patches containing millions of nanocapacitors. Data suggest that these nanotechnology-based devices/patches reduce acute and chronic pain. Methods: Google and PubMed searches were conducted to identify studies, case reports, and reviews of medical nanotechnology applications with a special focus on acute and chronic pain. This search was based on the use of keywords like nanotechnology, nano and quantum technology, nanoparticles, micelles, quantum dots, liposomes, nanofibers, nano-scaffolds, acute and chronic pain, and analgesics. This review focuses on the role of nanotechnology in acute and chronic pain. Results: (1) Nanotechnology-based transporters. DepoDur™, administered epidurally in 15, 20, or 25 mg single doses, has been demonstrated to produce significant analgesia lasting up to 48 h. Exparel™ is infiltrated at the surgical site at the recommended dose of 106 mg for bunionectomy, 266 mg for hemorrhoidectomy, 133 mg for shoulder surgery, and 266 mg for total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Exparel™ is also approved for peripheral nerve blocks, including interscalene, sciatic at the popliteal fossa, and adductor canal blocks. The injection of Exparel™ is usually preceded by an injection of plain bupivacaine to initiate analgesia before bupivacaine is released in enough quantity from the depofoarm to be pharmacodynamically effective. Finally, Zynrelef™ is applied at the surgical site during closure. It was initially approved for open inguinal hernia, abdominal surgery requiring a small-to-medium incision, foot surgery, and TKA. (2) Nanotechnology-based devices/patches. Two studies support the use of nanocapacitor-based devices/patches for the management of acute and chronic pain. A randomized study conducted on patients undergoing unilateral primary total knee (TKA) and total hip arthroplasty (THA) provided insight into the potential value of nanocapacitor-based technology for the control of postoperative acute pain. The results were based on 2 studies, one observational and one randomized. The observational study was conducted in 128 patients experiencing chronic pain for at least one year. This study suggested that compared to baseline, the application of a nanocapacitor-based Kailo™ pain relief patch on the pain site for 30 days led to a time-dependent decrease in pain and analgesic use and an increase in well-being. The randomized study compared the effects of standard of care treatment to those of the same standard of care approach plus the use of two nanocapacitor-based device/patches (NeuroCuple™ device) placed in the recovery room and kept in place for three days. The study demonstrated that the use of the two NeuroCuple™ devices was associated with a 41% reduction in pain at rest and a 52% decrease in the number of opioid refills requested by patients over the first 30 days after discharge from the hospital. Discussion: For the management of pain, the use of nano-based technology has led to the development of nano transporters, especially focus on the use of liposome and nanocapacitors. The use of liposome led to the development of DepoDur™, bupivacaine Exparel™ and a mixture of bupivacaine and meloxicam (Zynrelef™) and more recently lidocaine liposome formulation. In these cases, the technology is used to prolong the duration of action of drugs included in the preparation. Another indication of nanotechnology is the development of nanocapacitor device or patches. Although, data obtained with the use of nanocapacitors are still limited, evidence suggests that the use of nanocapacitors devices/patches may be interesting for the treatment of both acute and chronic pain, since the studies conducted with the NeuroCuple™ device and the based Kailo™ pain relief patch were not placebo-controlled, it is clear that additional placebo studies are required to confirm these preliminary results. Therefore, the development of a placebo devices/patches is necessary. Conclusions: Increasing evidence supports the concept that nanotechnology may represent a valuable tool as a drug transporter including liposomes and as a nanocapacitor-based device/patch to reduce or even eliminate the use of opioids in surgical patients. However, more studies are required to confirm this concept, especially with the use of nanotechnology incorporated in devices/patches.

Ceramic nanoparticles, however, have the potential to generate oxidative stress, which can result in irritation of the reticuloendothelial system, cytotoxicity to the heart, liver, and lungs, as well as toxicity to the cells that are attached. Additionally, oxidative stress, cell damage, and genotoxicity might result from the generation of free radicals by ceramic nanoparticles. Metal nanoparticles exhibit linear optical properties similar to molecular systems but arise from a different physical process. Nanomaterials in Antibacterial Photodynamic Therapy and Antibacterial Sonodynamic Therapy

AbstractAntibacterial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) and antibacterial sonodynamic therapy (aSDT) utilize sensitizers (photosensitizers/sonosensitizers) to produce reactive oxygen species (ROS) for antibacterial treatment under the stimulation of light/ultrasound, which have the characteristics of broad‐spectrum antibacterial properties, low drug‐resistance, and effective targeting of infected tissues. Nanomaterials in aPDT/aSDT are primarily used as nano‐sensitizers or nano‐carriers of sensitizers. They enhance the stability and permeability of sensitizers, improve targeting of sensitizers, strengthen photodynamic/sonodynamic properties of sensitizers (modification of sensitizers absorption efficiency and light/ultrasonic response stress by modulation of nanoparticle shape, size, and structure). Also, they improve modifiability of sensitizers (controlling the release rate and time of the sensitizer as needed to optimize the therapeutic effect), enhance programmability and multifunctionality of sensitizers (flexible application of nanotechnology for designing sensitizers with multiple functions, such as drug delivery, targeted therapy, and therapeutic monitoring), and expand possibilities for combination therapies (the nano‐carriers can be loaded with other therapeutic agents, enabling combination therapies). Nanomaterials are expected to further promote the development of aPDT/aSDT and achieve improved antibacterial effects. This review summarizes the progress in nanomaterials in aPDT/aSDT in recent years and based on the current development strategies to provide a theoretical reference for the application of nanomaterials in aPDT/aSDT.

Novel nonlinear quantum dust acoustic waves for modified variable coefficients Zakharove–Kusnetsov equation in dusty plasma

In this paper, the direct similarity reduction method is used to reduce the modified variable coefficient Zakharove–Kusnetsov equation (vcmZK), which represents the propagation of quantum dust acoustic waves (QDAWs) in an inhomogeneous magnetized dusty plasma field, into a nonlinear ordinary differential equation (NODE). Moreover, the Jacobi elliptic method is used to solve the NODE, where many novel double periodic, kink, and solitary wave solutions are obtained. Additionally, we have chosen to plot periodic, kink, and soliton QDAWs solutions according to some choices for the variable coefficients. According to the a chieved results, we can conclude that the choices of the functional forms of the variable coefficients can control the QDAWs propagation. Finally, the new discovered results may have many important applications in astrophysics, atmospheric science, nanotechnology, and industrial plasma physics.

Nanotechnology applications in interior design of hospitals to enhance thermal comfort and decrease the infection spread for the occupants

Background In healthcare facilities, the significance of sensitive architecture cannot be overstated. In regions facing challenges such as Egypt, the healthcare sector is grappling with deteriorating conditions. The design of hospitals is crucial for addressing the needs of patients with varying illnesses and for creating an environment that fosters psychological well-being. The interior design process, especially the selection of materials, plays a pivotal role in ensuring a hygienic and safe environment within healthcare facilities. Walls, floors, ceilings, and furniture materials are key elements that contribute to the overall design. A study was conducted to investigate the application of nano materials in healthcare facility interior design in Egypt. Methods The study involved first a literature review on nano technology and its application in healthcare interior spaces. It culminated in a framework and guidelines for nano materials in different hospital zones. The analytical part of the study analysed successful international examples, leading to a checklist of nanomaterials categorized by hospital zones. The third part involved a base case study in Alexandria, Egypt, simulating the impact of nano coatings on air temperature, radiant temperature, and relative humidity using the DesignBuilder software. Results The results demonstrated a positive impact on patient health and thermal comfort with nano materials. The use of nano coatings in interior design finishes resulted in decreases in air temperature, radiant temperature, and relative humidity. There was an average decrease of 12.3%-16.7% in air temperature, 3%-4.2% in radiant temperature, and 7%-12% in relative humidity throughout the year. Conclusions The study highlighted the effectiveness of nano technology in enhancing the interior finishes of healthcare buildings, leading to improved patient health, thermal comfort, and decreased infection spread rate. We provide valuable recommendations for optimizing material selection in existing hospital buildings in emphasizing potential benefits of nano materials in healthcare facility design.

Real-time swelling-collapse kinetics of nanogels driven by XFEL pulses.

Stimuli-responsive polymers are an important class of materials with many applications in nanotechnology and drug delivery. The most prominent one is poly-N-isopropylacrylamide (PNIPAm). The characterization of the kinetics of its change after a temperature jump is still a lively research topic, especially at nanometer-length scales where it is not possible to rely on conventional microscopic techniques. Here, we measured in real time the collapse of a PNIPAm shell on silica nanoparticles with megahertz x-ray photon correlation spectroscopy at the European XFEL. We characterize the changes of the particles diffusion constant as a function of time and consequently local temperature on sub-microsecond timescales. We developed a phenomenological model to describe the observed data and extract the characteristic times associated to the swelling and collapse processes. Different from previous studies tracking the turbidity of PNIPAm dispersions and using laser heating, we find collapse times below microsecond timescales and two to three orders of magnitude slower swelling times.

Exploration of the Magnetic Properties of ZrCo:Co Bilayer Films: Effects of the Thickness of the Co Layer on the Anisotropy and Magnetic Interaction Parameters

The analysis of ZrCo:Co films with varying Co layer thicknesses reveals distinctive magnetic properties and behaviors. Despite significant roughness, the films exhibit uniform surfaces and complete crystallization at the nanoscale. Magnetic studies show positive remanence anisotropy, decreased coercivity Hc and remanent magnetization Mr with increasing film thickness, along with a linear correlation between thickness and surface roughness. Exchange interactions between grains and layers influence magnetic properties. Ferromagnetic resonance analysis demonstrates a direct correlation between film thickness and magnetization orientation preference, notably at δCo = 200 nm. These findings underscore the critical role of film thickness in determining microstructural and magnetic properties, offering insights for magnetic device and nanotechnology applications. Understanding these relationships may lead to thickness‐tunable magnetic materials. This study uniquely explores ZrCo:Co films, delving into how their magnetic properties vary with Co layer thickness, revealing novel magnetic behaviors.

Fluorocarbon Nanodroplets: Their Formation and Stability in Complex Solution Systems.

Perfluorocarbon (PFC) nanodroplets (NDs) are expanding in a wide range of applications in biotechnology and nanotechnology. Their efficacy in biological systems is significantly influenced by their size uniformity and stability within bioelectrolyte contexts. Presently, methods for creating monodisperse, highly concentrated, and well-stabilized PFC NDs under harsh conditions using low energy consumption methods have not been thoroughly developed, and their stability has not been sufficiently explored. This gap restricts their applicability for advanced medical interventions in tissues with high pH levels and various electrolytic conditions. To tackle these challenges and to circumvent potential toxicity from surface stabilizers, we have conducted an in-depth investigation into the formation and stability of uncoated perfluorohexane (PFH) NDs, which were synthesized by using a low-energy consumption solvent exchange technique, across complex electrolyte compositions or a broad spectrum of pH levels. The results indicated that low concentrations of low-valent electrolyte ions facilitate the nucleation of NDs and consistently accelerate Ostwald ripening over an extended period. Conversely, high concentrations of highly valent electrolyte ions inhibit nucleation and decelerate the ripening process over time. Given the similarities between the properties of NDs and nanobubbles, we propose a potential stabilization mechanism. Electrolytes influence the Ostwald ripening of NDs by adjusting the adsorption and distribution of ions on the NDs' surface, modifying the thickness of the electric double layer, and fine-tuning the energy barrier between droplets. These insights enable precise control over the stability of PFC NDs through the meticulous adjustment of the surrounding electrolyte composition. This offers an effective preparation method and a theoretical foundation for employing bare PFC NDs in physiological settings.

Topological Insights into Nanostar Dendrimers by Computing the Augmented Zagreb Index.

This paper focuses on a novel analytical expression and determines the precise value of the augmented Zagreb index, a topological descriptor, for eight classes of nanostar dendrimers. The Zagreb index is a topological invariant to predict molecular behaviour and reactivity. In this paper, we have explored its application in characterizing the branching of nanostar dendrimers through computational modelling and mathematical rigor. Our research has measured the augmented Zagreb index for nanostar dendrimers, which fall into eight distinct classes. The results better explain the relationship between the dendrimers' topology and chemical properties. This correlation has implications for their structural stability and reactivity, potentially leading to new applications. Developing the augmented Zagreb index for nanostar dendrimers is a significant breakthrough in nanobiotechnology. Based on the correlation between the calculated topological index and the corresponding molecular attributes, our analytical approach has opened up new possibilities for designing and synthesizing dendrimers tailored to specific functions in medical and material science applications. This precise topological quantification could significantly enhance the utility and functionalization of dendrimers in cutting-edge nanotechnological applications.

Probing molecular architectures and interactions with scanning tunneling microscopy on graphite and arachidic acid functionalized surfaces
