Uncovering the complex relationship between plant diversity, soil properties, and mycorrhizal inoculum potential in threatened Miombo woodlands

AbstractArbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) are key members of soil microbial communities and play a key role in regulating ecosystem processes. However, the mutual interdependence of plants and AMF in threatened Miombo woodlands has not yet been fully elucidated. In this study, we investigated the relationship between plant ecological indicators and soil mycorrhizal inoculum potential (MIP) in the Miombo forest fallow of Haut‐Katanga, Democratic Republic of Congo, and identified plant species that positively influence soil MIP. We conducted a floristic inventory on 32 plots and collected soil cores for physicochemical and AMF characterization. Trap cultures using Crotalaria juncea seedlings were performed to determine the soil MIP. We also tested the AMF colonization status of randomly collected living roots of mature woody and dominant herbaceous species to identify explanatory variables for MIP. Our results showed that MIP was twice as high in silty clay soils (63.13%) than in clay soils (30%). Furthermore, MIP increased accordingly with the relative abundance of a group of woody and herbaceous species (e.g., Albizia adianthifolia, Baphia bequaertii, and Setaria pumila) and decreased with others (e.g., Combretum collinum, Harungana madagascariensis and Hyparrhenia diplandra). Linear regressions showed that MIP increased significantly with the specific richness of woody species identified as indicators and with the amount of annual herbs. Woody legumes with high root colonization by AMF appeared to be refuge plants, and primary AMF dispersal vectors, increasing soil MIP. This study provides baseline data that can be used to formulate ecological restoration strategies, including soil and vegetation protection.

Durum wheat-lentil relay intercropping enhances soil mycorrhizal activity but does not alter structure of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal community within roots

In intercropping systems, crop species select host-adapted microorganisms and influence the associated plant-microbial interactions like in the case of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF). Attempts to assess the impact of intercropping on the activity, diversity, and community composition of AMF remain inconclusive, more so in intercropping systems involving traditional Mediterranean crops such as durum wheat and lentils. We carried out field experiments in Central Italy to assess the impact of relay intercropping durum wheat (Triticum durum Desf. cv. Minosse) and lentil (Lens culinaris Medik. cv. Elsa) on soil mycorrhizal inoculum potential (MIP) (2019 and 2020), AMF root colonization (2019, 2020, and 2021), and root AMF diversity and community composition (2020 and 2021), compared to the respective sole crops. Results showed that relay intercropping enhanced lentil grain yield and durum wheat grain protein concentration but marginally reduced durum wheat grain yield and lentil grain protein concentration. In addition, relay intercropping enhanced soil mycorrhizal activity but differentially influenced mycorrhizal root colonization compared to sole cropping. Sequencing analyses generated a total of 234 amplicon sequence variants belonging to Glomeromycota, which were assigned to 31 virtual taxa using the MaarjAM reference database. Glomeraceae and Claroideoglomeraceae were the most abundant taxa but had contrasting abundances in 2020 and 2021. The overall changes in AMF species diversity and community structure were affected by the interaction between crop species and year, and not by intercropping. Claroideoglomus and Septoglomus showed a strong association with lentil roots while Rhizophagus and Paraglomus were associated with durum wheat roots in 2020, affirming host genotype-AMF preferences. The principal component analysis showed that grain protein concentration was associated with selected mycorrhizal parameters such as community richness and AMF root colonization. Further studies on the functional analysis of the different AMF communities selected by the crop genotype and year may reveal the importance of intercropping in maintaining soil functionality and productivity under low-input systems.

Effects of Pesticides on the Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Symbiosis

Substantial amounts of pesticides, used in agricultural production to control pests, diseases, and weeds, and thereby attain high product quantities and quality, can severely affect the ecosystem and human health. The amounts of pesticides used depend on the specifics of the current production system but also exhibit large effects of past practices. Pesticides do not act only on the target organisms but also on organisms for which the chemicals were not specifically formulated, constituting hazardous molecules for humans and the environment. Pesticides, therefore, also influence soil microbial communities including organisms that engage in mutualistic plant symbioses that play a crucial role in its mineral nutrition, such as arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi. In this review, we summarize the current knowledge on the effects of synthetic and natural (‘green’) pesticides (fungicides, herbicides, and insecticides) on arbuscular mycorrhizal symbiosis. We deal with both the direct effects (spore germination and extraradical and intraradical growth of the mycelium) and indirect effects on the agroecosystem level. Such indirect effects include effects through the spread of herbicide-resistant crops and weeds to neighboring ecosystems, thereby modifying the mycorrhizal inoculum potential and altering the plant–plant interactions. We also briefly discuss the possibility that mycorrhizal plants can be used to enhance the phytoremediation of organic pesticides.

Biostimulatory effect of vermicompost extract enhances soil mycorrhizal activity and selectively improves crop productivity

PurposeCommercial production and the use of liquid vermicompost extract (LVE) is gaining attention as a technique that supports integrated soil-microbial-crop management for sustainable agriculture. However, the interaction effects of LVE, arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), and host plants on the delivery of agroecosystem services in alkaline soil have been less studied.MethodsWe carried out a 3-year field experiment in Central Italy, to investigate the short-term effect of LVE on soil mycorrhizal inoculum potential (MIP), AMF root colonization, and productivity of berseem clover, lentil, and sunflower. LVE produced in different years were screened for microbial properties using Illumina Miseq sequencing. LVE was applied at seeding, crop stem elongation and flowering stages. Control crops received water as a placebo.ResultsLVE bacterial communities were more diverse and showed a higher turnover between 2019 and 2020 than fungal communities. Diverse microbial groups, the majority of which belonged to phyla Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes, and Mucoromycota, were detected, including N-fixers (Flavobacterium, Malikia, and Citrobacter), P-solubilizers (Pseudomonas), and C-degraders (Tolumonas, Arcobacter, and Mucor). Notably, LVE treatment enhanced soil MIP and AMF root colonization in most crops, but selectively improved shoot biomass of berseem clover (+ 32%) and sunflower (+ 34%), and grain yield (+ 37%) and oil concentration (+ 5%) in sunflower, compared to the corresponding non-treated controls.ConclusionsLVE had diverse groups of bacteria and a few fungal taxa, and its application enhanced mycorrhizal properties and selected growth- and yield-related variables in lentil, berseem clover, and sunflower. This could be due to LVE’s biostimulating effect arising from the vermicompost-associated microbiome and biomolecules.

Wildfire does not affect spore abundance, species richness, and inoculum potential of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (Glomeromycota) in ferruginous Canga ecosystems

Canga ecosystems develop over superficial iron crusts with shallow and nutrient-poor soils. Under these conditions, arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) play an important role in helping plants to overcome abiotic and biotic stresses. Canga can suffer periodic burning and yet it is unknown what the impacts of fire are to AMF communities. We aimed to compare AMF in Canga areas affected by burning (BC) with those with no previous history of burning (NC). We compared AMF species composition, spore numbers, species richness, and mycorrhizal inoculum potential. The total number of spores, AMF species richness and mycorrhizal colonization measured in the infectivity bioassay were not significantly different between areas. A total of 23 species in 10 genera were recovered, with most species belonging to Gigasporaceae and Acaulosporaceae. BC and NC shared 52 % of AMF species. Gigaspora albida, Gigaspora gigantea, and Dentiscutata heterogama sporulated exclusively in trap cultures. We concluded that AMF spore communities were not affected by burning in Canga soils as measured by spore abundance, species richness and infectivity. Our data contribute to the inventory of soil biodiversity associated with Canga, a high biodiverse and threatened Brazilian ecosystem.

Bracken fern does not diminish arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus inoculum potential in tropical deforested areas.

Tropical montane forests are threatened by uncontrolled fire events because of agricultural expansion. Consequently, deforested areas frequently are dominated by the bracken fern, Pteridium spp., for long periods, and forest regeneration is limited. Despite considerable research on bracken-dominated ecosystems, little is known about the relationship between bracken mycorrhizal fungi and tree seedlings. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) form symbiotic relationships with terrestrial plants, providing nutrients and protection against pathogens and promoting seedling growth and establishment. Therefore, AMF inoculum have high potential for forest restoration programs. Here, we compare the species diversity of AMF spores, root colonization, and seedling growth of Clusia trochiformis 1year after the addition of different liquefied root inocula: forest conspecific, forest heterospecific, and from Pteridium rhizomes. Thirteen morphospecies of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi were identified on the roots of C. trochiformis, and Glomus spp. were the most abundant in all treatments. No differences were observed in spore species richness and diversity among treatments, but spore density was the highest subsequent to the Pteridium inoculum. There was no significant difference in mycorrhizal root colonization and seedling growth of C. trochiformis among inoculated treatments. We found a positive relation between root colonization and total biomass. This study shows that the AMF communities in bracken areas and forests present similar characteristics and that the bracken fern does not limit AMF inoculum potential, favouring seedling growth of Clusia.

Cover crop species and mycorrhizal colonization on soil phosphorus dynamics

Phosphorus (P) plays an important role in the physiological plant processes; however, in tropical soils, P is one of the most limiting nutrients for crop yield due to its low mobility, determined by the adsorption of this element to the soil. To enhance P-use and P-acquisition efficiency, this research aimed to evaluate the effect of cover crops and mycorrhizal colonization on changing soil P fractions, both organic and inorganic. A complete randomized block design was adopted in a field experiment, with four replications using four cover crops: i) pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan); ii) crotalaria (Crotalaria juncea); iii) millet (Pennisetum glaucum); iv) brachiaria (Brachiaria ruziziensis) and v) fallow, as control. The arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus colonization, the fungal spore density, soil P fractionation, and N, P, and K uptake were assessed. Our results show that cover crops affected the soil P cycling in deeper soil layers. Cover crops may increase arbuscular mycorrhizal inoculum potential for the succeeding crop in rotation or intercropping, when used as a green manure.

Partial Retention of Legacy Trees Protect Mycorrhizal Inoculum Potential, Biodiversity, and Soil Resources While Promoting Natural Regeneration of Interior Douglas-Fir

Clearcutting reduces proximity to seed sources and mycorrhizal inoculum potential for regenerating seedlings. Partial retention of legacy trees and protection of refuge plants, as well as preservation of the forest floor, can maintain mycorrhizal networks that colonize germinants and improve nutrient supply. However, little is known of overstory retention levels that best protect mycorrhizal inoculum while also providing sufficient light and soil resources for seedling establishment. To quantify the effect of tree retention on seedling regeneration, refuge plants, and resource availability, we compared five harvesting methods with increasing retention of overstory trees (clearcutting (0% retention), seed tree (10% retention), 30% patch retention, 60% patch retention, and 100% retention in uncut controls) in an interior Douglas-fir-dominated forest in British Columbia. Regeneration increased with proximity to legacy trees in partially cut forests, with increasing densities of interior Douglas-fir, western redcedar, grand fir, and western hemlock seedlings with overstory tree retention. Clearcutting reduced cover of ectomycorrhizal refuge plants (from 80 to 5%) while promoting arbuscular mycorrhizal plants the year after harvest. Richness of shrubs, herbs, and mosses declined with increasing harvesting intensity, but tree richness remained at control levels. The presence of legacy trees in all partially cut treatments mitigated these losses. Light availability declined with increasing overstory cover and proximity to leave trees, but it still exceeded 1,000 W m−2 in the clearcut, seed tree and 30% retention treatments. Increasing harvesting intensity reduced aboveground and belowground C stocks, particularly in live trees and the forest floor, although forest floor losses were also substantial where thinning took place in the 60% retention treatment. The loss of forest floor carbon, along with understory plant richness with intense harvesting was likely associated with a loss of ectomycorrhizal inoculum potential. This study suggests that dispersed retention of overstory trees where seed trees are spaced ~10–20 m apart, and aggregated retention where openings are <60 m (2 tree-lengths) in width, will result in an optimal balance of seed source proximity, inoculum potential, and resource availability where seedling regeneration, plant biodiversity, and carbon stocks are protected.

Impact of Nitrogen Fertilizer on the Mycorrhizal Inoculating Potential and Fungal Community Structure in Rhizosphere of Medicinal Plant Curcuma longa L.

Reducing chemical fertilizer while remaining high crop yield has become a trend of agricultural practice. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of nitrogen (N) input on the structure of the fungal community and mycorrhizal inoculum potential in rhizosphere of Curcuma longa, aiming to minimize the use of chemicals and optimize the effect of biofertilizer for sustainable turmeric farming. For this, a field study was conducted in two successive years 2015 and 2016 with applications of varrying N fertilizer rates N0 (0 kgN ha−1 y−1), N150 (150 kgN ha−1 y−1), N350 (350 kgN ha−1 y−1), and N500 (500 kgN ha−1 y−1) in combination with mycorrhizal biofertilizer on turmeric plants in Hung-Yen. Rhizosphere soils were then analyzed for the abundance of predominant fungal taxon based on amplicon sequencing of rDNA internal transcribed spacer regions. Metagenomic results indicated significant effects of N inputs on rhizosphere fungal communities composition, with dominance of ascomyceteous fungi under optimized N levels, whereas basidiomycetous fungi were more abundant under higher N input. Operational taxonomic units relating to the predominantly abundant genus Glomus were found apparently in higher proportion under optimized N inputs (N150). The results demonstrate an enhanced productivity and icreased mycorrhizal inoculating potential by appropriated N fertilizer application in turmeric rhizosphere.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi associated with the babassu palm (Attalea speciosa) in the eastern periphery of Amazonia, Brazil

ABSTRACT Babassu, Attalea speciosa (Arecaceae) is a ruderal palm native to Amazonia, which turned dominant in frequently burned lands throughout the ‘arc of deforestation’ and other degraded lands, in extreme cases attaining complete dominance. This study investigated arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) as one possible explanation for the outstanding ecological success of this exceptional palm. We explored the relationships between the babassu palm and native arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and babassu effects on the AMF richness and mycorrhizal inoculum potential (MIP) in the eastern periphery of Amazonia. For this purpose, we sampled topsoil (0-20 cm) at the onset of the rainy season from a 5-year-old secondary forest regrowth (SEC) area with three levels of babassu dominance (sites with 10, 50 and 70% babassu biomass shares), and at three distances (0, 2.5 and 4 m) from isolated babassu patches within a degraded pasture (PAS), both with five replications per treatment. Glomerospore density varied from 100 to 302 per gram of soil, 56% higher in SEC than PAS. We identified a total of 16 AMF species, with dominance of Acaulospora (six species) followed by Glomus (three species). AMF richness increased with babassu dominance in SEC sites, and reduced with distance from babassu patches within the PAS. The colonization rate of babassu roots was higher in SEC than in PAS, whereas MIP was similar in both areas and without treatment differences. Our study points to strong mycorrhizal association of the babassu palm as a potential mechanism for its outstanding ecological success in degraded lands.

Morphological and molecular diversity of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi in revegetated iron-mining site has the same magnitude of adjacent pristine ecosystems

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) are important during revegetation of mining sites, but few studies compared AMF community in revegetated sites with pristine adjacent ecosystems. The aim of this study was to assess AMF species richness in a revegetated iron-mining site and adjacent ecosystems and to relate AMF occurrence to soil chemical parameters. Soil samples were collected in dry and rainy seasons in a revegetated iron-mining site (RA) and compared with pristine ecosystems of forest (FL), canga (NG), and Cerrado (CE). AMF species were identified by spore morphology from field and trap cultures and by LSU rDNA sequencing using Illumina. A total of 62 AMF species were recovered, pertaining to 18 genera and nine families of Glomeromycota. The largest number of species and families were detected in RA, and Acaulospora mellea and Glomus sp1 were the most frequent species. Species belonging to Glomeraceae and Acaulosporaceae accounted for 42%–48% of total species richness. Total number of spores and mycorrhizal inoculum potential tended to be higher in the dry than in the rainy season, except in RA. Sequences of uncultured Glomerales were dominant in all sites and seasons and five species were detected exclusively by DNA-based identification. Redundancy analysis evidenced soil pH, organic matter, aluminum, and iron as main factors influencing AMF presence. In conclusion, revegetation of the iron-mining site seems to be effective in maintaining a diverse AMF community and different approaches are complementary to reveal AMF species, despite the larger number of species being identified by traditional identification of field spores.

Protective green cover enhances soil respiration and native mycorrhizal potential compared with soil tillage in a high-density olive orchard in a long term study

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), living in symbiosis with most food crops, improve plant growth and nutrition and provide fundamental ecosystem services. Here, the possibility of increasing root density and native AMF activity through appropriate soil management practices was investigated, comparing the long-term (10 years) effects of a permanent green cover (GC) with shallow tillage (ST) in a high-density olive orchard in a Mediterranean environment. Olive root density, AMF colonization, and soil mycorrhizal inoculum potential (MIP) were determined after trench excavations at different soil depths. Soil respiration was determined by infra-red gas analysis. The activity of native AMF, as assessed by MIP bioassay, was higher in GC plots than in ST ones. Olive roots were well colonized by AMF in both management systems. Soil respiration rates of GC plots were often higher than those of ST, whereas soil moisture and temperature in the topsoil were similar in both treatments. Soil depth significantly affected root density, which peaked at 0.2m soil depth in both soil treatments. The maintenance of a permanent plant cover appears to be a better option than shallow tillage as a soil management practice to preserve biological soil fertility in olive orchards.

Collembola Community Structure as a Tool to Assess Land Use Effects on Soil Quality

Collembolan species are differently affected by soil tillage (conventional, minimum tillage, and no-tillage) and are known to modify plant growth. This study relies on the relationships between Collembola community structures and land use systems as a proxy for characterizing changes in soil quality. Thus, Collembola community structure (eco-morphological groups - edaphic, hemiedaphic and epigeic, and morphotypes) were examined in a no-tillage system and crop-livestock integration system to evaluate the discriminative power of the Collembola community structure and to determine which soil properties drives structural diversity. Thirty-eight morphotypes of Collembola were recorded in this study, 11 belonging to the edaphic eco-morphological group, 14 hemiedaphic, and 13 epigeic. The hemiedaphic and epigeic groups, in the no-tillage system, were more influenced by changes in soil properties (total organic carbon, particulate organic carbon, total N, Ca, Mg, moisture, bulk density) and mycelium length than the groups in the crop-livestock integration system (mycorrhizal inoculum potential, and soil properties as dehydrogenase, particulate organic carbon, Mg, sand). Collembola eco-morphological groups were better predictors for ecosystem functioning than Collembola density and can be used to distinguish differences between soil uses, reducing laboratory analysis time.

An Experimental Test of Epi- and Endozoochory of Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi Spores by Small Mammals in a Maryland Forest

Small mammals have been proposed as important dispersers of the spores of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), yet few data exist to support this hypothesis. We experimentally tested 2 models of small-mammal dispersal of AMF spores by quantifying their impact on the mycorrhizal inoculum potential of sterile soil flats in a northeast mesophytic forest in Maryland. Epizoochory did not provide a mechanism for spore dispersal in our study. However, our data demonstrated that endozoochory by several small-mammal species can be an effective dispersal mode for AMF. In the field experiment, inoculum potential of soil from plots that were accessible to Peromyscus leucopus (White-footed Mouse) was significantly higher than in control plots, which excluded small mammals. This study provides experimental evidence that White-footed Mice disperse AMF spores.

POTENCIAL DE INÓCULO MICORRÍZICO E IMPORTÂNCIA DO COMPRIMENTO DO MICÉLIO PARA A AGREGAÇÃO DE SOLOS DE AMBIENTE FLUVIAL

Os fungos micorrízicos arbusculares (FMAs) desempenham importante papel nos ecossistemas naturais pelo seus impactos na nutrição vegetal e estrutura do solo. O objetivo deste estudo foi determinar o potencial do inóculo micorrízico e a relação do comprimento do micélio micorrízico (CMM) dos FMAs na agregação de solos de ambientes fluviais. Foram realizadas coletas em áreas de ambiente fluvial da bacia hidrográfica do rio Itajaí-Açu, entre os municípios de Gaspar e Navegantes, em Santa Catarina. Oito áreas foram amostradas em três classes de solos, sendo elas: Cambissolo (C), Gleissolo (G) e Organossolo (O). Nos solos coletados, foram avaliadas as seguintes variáveis: potencial de inóculo micorrízico, número de esporos, CMM e análise dos atributos físicos e químicos do solo. A porcentagem de colonização micorrízica da Brachiaria brizantha no ensaio do potencial de inóculo variou de 13,8 a 55,3 % e nenhum padrão foi observado de acordo com a classe de solo. O CMM no solo variou de 10,48 a 44,67 mg g-1. O número de esporos em 100 cm3 de solo variou de 2,4 a 80. Foi observada correlação negativa entre o CMM e a proporção de macroagregados estáveis em água e correlação positiva entre CMM com microagregados. Este trabalho demonstrou que os solos da bacia do rio Itajaí-Açu possuem potencial de inóculo micorrízico suficiente para iniciar a colonização das raízes das plantas em curto período de tempo, o que pode ser importante facilitador no crescimento de espécies arbóreas usadas no processo de recuperação desses ambientes.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal communities in changing environments: The effects of seasonality and anthropogenic disturbance in a seasonal dry forest

The landscape of Mexican seasonal dry forests is affected by various periodic (long and drastic drought) and random (elimination of the forest coverage for agricultural purposes) disturbance events. The community of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) responds to these changes, sporulating and reducing its activity during the dry season, and slowly reestablishing itself following abandonment of cultivated fields. To determine the dynamics of the AMF community in response to natural phenomena and anthropogenic disturbances, we collected soil samples during the wet and dry seasons from plots with different time periods since abandonment of agricultural activity, categorized as early (less than 5 years), middle (11–23 years), and late (over 30 years) age plots. From each plot, AMF spores were isolated and identified in order to estimate abundance, richness and diversity. In addition, the number of infective propagules and value of mycorrhizal inoculum potential were calculated for each plot. Twenty-three species were recorded, for which Glomeraceae and Acaulosporaceae were the most commonly represented families. Significant differences were found in AMF species richness among plots and seasons and the diversity index of AMF was higher than 1.0 in most cases. There were no significant differences in spore abundance. Viable propagules were observed in all soil samples, with fluctuations relating mainly to time since abandonment. Overall, seasonality has a strong influence on AMF diversity but not on AMF infectivity, while time since abandonment had a more important impact.

Occurrence of dark septate endophytes in Nothofagus seedlings from Patagonia, Argentina

Temperate forests of southern Argentina and Chile cover a wide latitudinal and altitudinal range on both sides of the Andes, with Nothofagus species being one of the main tree species. Most of the larger remnants are protected within the limits of national parks and forest reserves. However, some of these are invaded by exotic conifers such as Pseudotsuga menziesii. In order to better understand the mycorrhizal condition within the Nothofagus–P. menziesii interaction, transects were established at six study sites along the effective recruitment area. Three treatments were established: Nothofagus forest without P. menziesii invasion (Forest), Nothofagus–P. menziesii matrix (Interface) and P. menziesii plantation lacking Nothofagus specimens (Plantation). A 2 kg mixed soil sample was taken at each treatment site and kept in brand-new plastic bags. A soil bioassay with Nothofagus seedlings acting as baits was set to evaluate the mycorrhizal inoculum potential and soil-fungi composition at each sampling treatment. Forty percent of the evaluated seedlings were found to be colonised by dark septate endophytes (DSE) fungi. Ectomycorrhizal colonisation percentage was significantly higher in plants growing in Forest soils (mean = 57.77%) when compared with Interface (mean = 42.53%) and Plantation (mean = 44.65%). The high incidence of DSE in young roots of Nothofagus seedlings in this study supports the hypothesis that DSE might be pioneering colonisers of young tree seedlings in secondary successional environments. For future interventions in the forest, either with productive or protective intentions, it should be taken into account the incidence of these fungi, which may have an important positive role in Nothofagus forest post-invasion recovery.

Mycorrhizal activity and diversity in a long-term organic Mediterranean agroecosystem

In organic agriculture, soil fertility and productivity rely on biological processes carried out by soil microbes, which represent the key elements of agroecosystem functioning. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), fundamental microorganisms for soil fertility, plant nutrition and health, may play an important role in organic agriculture by compensating for the reduced use of fertilizers and pesticides. Though, AMF activity and diversity following conversion from conventional to organic farming are poorly investigated. Here we studied AMF abundance, diversity and activity in short- and long-term organically and conventionally managed Mediterranean arable agroecosystems. Our results show that both AMF population activity, as assessed by the mycorrhizal inoculum potential (MIP) assay, the percentage of colonized root length of the field crop (maize) and glomalin-related soil protein (GRSP) content were higher in organically managed fields and increased with time since transition to organic farming. Here, we showed an increase of GRSP content in arable organic systems and a strong correlation with soil MIP values. The analysis of AMF spores showed differences among communities of the three microagroecosystems in terms of species richness and composition as suggested by a multivariate analysis. All our data indicate that AMF respond positively to the transition to organic farming by a progressive enhancement of their activity that seems independent from the species richness of the AMF communities. Our study contributes to the understanding of the effects of agricultural managements on AMF, which represent a promising tool for the implementation of sustainable agriculture.

The abundance and diversity of legume-nodulating rhizobia and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal communities in soil samples from deforested and man-made forest systems in a semiarid Sahel region in Senegal

Exotic and native tree species have been widely used in the West Africa to reverse the tendency of land degradation. Although benefic effects have been reported on soil stabilization, a lack of information about their impact on soil symbiotic microorganisms still remains. This investigation has been carried out in a semiarid Sahel region and aimed to survey the abundance and diversity of natural legume-nodulating rhizobia (LNR) and arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungal communities in soil samples from deforested and man-made forest systems. A genetically diverse LNR population is supported by the phylogenetic analysis, which clustered the isolates into three genera: Bradyrhizobium, Mesorhizobium and Sinorhizobium. The results showed that the man-made forest systems increased the LNR abundance and genetic diversity as well as the soil phosphorus and nitrogen contents. By contrast, strong modifications have been recorded in the characteristics of the AM fungal communities. The number of AM fungus taxa as well as the mycorrhizal inoculum potential (MIP) of soils decreased drastically in the man-made forest systems in comparison with the deforested land. In addition, the larger-spored AM fungi (Scutellospora and Gigaspora) were specifically found in soil samples from the deforested land. The displacement of larger-spored species was associated with a concomitant proliferation of small spored (Glomus) species. We conclude that man-made forestry can modify the soil symbiotic microorganisms and the results support the need for further adoption of management practices that could improve or sustain the development of herbaceous layers to promote the soil AM fungal communities.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal soil infectivity and spores distribution across plantations of tropical, subtropical and exotic tree species: a case study from the forest reserve of Bandia, Senegal

AbstractSeveral fast‐growing and multipurpose trees such as exotic and valuable native species have been widely used in West Africa to reverse the tendency of massive degradation of plant cover and restore soil productivity. Although benefic effects have been reported on soil stabilization, a lack of information about their impact on soil symbiotic microorganisms still remains. This investigation has been carried out in field trees of 28 years old in a forest reserve at Bandia. To determine the mycorrhizal inoculum potential (MIP) of soils, a mycorrhizal bioassay was conducted using seedlings of Zea mays L. Spores concentration, arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi morphotypes and mycorrhizal colonization of field plants were examined. Results showed that fungal communities were dominated in all samples by the genus Glomus. Nevertheless, the others genera Gigaspora and Scutellospora occurred preferentially out of the plantations. The number and richness of spores as well as the MIP of soils were decreased in the tree plantations. Accordingly, the amount of annual herbaceous plants kept out of the tree plantations was much greater than those under the tree plantations. The colonization was higher in field root systems of herb plants in comparison with that of the tree plants. Comparisons allowed us to conclude that vegetation type modifies the AM fungal communities, and the results suggest further adoption of management practices that could improve or sustain the development of herbaceous layers and thus promote the AM fungal communities.
