PENGELOLAAN KOLEKSI MUSEUM MUSIK INDONESIA BERBASIS APLIKASI OPEN SOURCE

The Indonesian Music Museum stores various music collections in the form of cassettes, compact discs, vinyl records, and music-related books. This self-managed museum has the potential to become an institution that stores musical works from various countries. Management has been carried out properly, starting from inventory of collections to registration, but still manually. The implementation of the Senayan Library Management System (SLiMS), which is an open source based application, is one solution for managing collections more quickly and making it possible to access them remotely. The method used in this research is a qualitative study using observations and interviews so that it can produce an appropriate management system for the museum. The main informants are museum managers who are considered to understand the metadata needs of their museum collections. All results of observations and interviews are used as guidelines in determining any changes to the applications used to manage collections at the Indonesian Music Museum. This research produces an open source application-based museum collection inventory system. Several changes and adjustments were made to this application so that it could be implemented in the museum. Terms referring to library collections were changed and adapted to the use of terms relevant to music collections. The grouping of collections based on music genres and artists' regions of origin which is usually carried out by the museum is still maintained to become the characteristic of this museum itself. The Indonesian Music Museum can implement this application in a sustainable and long-term manner. Using this system helps the museum to obtain data records of collections and their movements, as well as inventory data on collections currently owned.

Tourists' Perceptions of Buying Souvenirs in Online Museum Shops

ABSTRACTThe study of online souvenirs has increased in recent years. Considering the importance of tourists' perceptions for souvenir retailers, and the lack of studies on this issue, it is critical to understand tourists' attitudes toward this phenomenon. In general, interviewees expressed neutral or positive attitudes toward online museum stores. Online souvenir purchases did not influence their offline purchases, according to many interviewees. The majority of them still prefer to buy souvenirs in person, despite their favorable attitude toward online souvenir stores. This study provides insights into online and in‐store merchandising in the area of souvenir studies.

Entrepreneurs of memory: Selling history in the GDR Museum shop in Berlin

The field of memory studies rarely deals with commercial enterprises, which, as we argue in this article, play just as prominent a role in shaping collective memories as state actors or nongovernmental organizations. The aim of our study is therefore to discuss the role of private entrepreneurs and their businesses in the context of GDR memory. We focus on the privately run GDR Museum in Berlin and its best-selling products. Through the lens of the museum store, we analyze the exhibition, an iconic eggcup, and a book on the history of the GDR that has enjoyed sustained sales over a lengthy period. By tracing the intertwined distribution chains of these memory goods, we emphasize the importance of private entrepreneurs and their networks in the current German memory culture. We argue that economic interests and developments are just as important as political decisions and public institutions regarding the memory of the communist past. Thus memory studies should also focus on enterprises of memory by analyzing business data. This poses an empirical challenge that is worth tackling, since it broadens our understanding of current memory culture.

Museum Artifact Conservation Training for Social Science Educators and Students in Pontianak

The West Kalimantan Museum stores and exhibits a collection of items with historical, scientific, artistic, and cultural significance, primarily originating from West Kalimantan Province. It is crucial for social science educators and students in West Kalimantan to comprehend the significance of visiting the museum in person. This allows them to directly witness and study historical and cultural artifacts of West Kalimantan, thereby reinforcing the knowledge they acquire from books. Hence, social science education lecturers of Tanjungpura University organized a community service program known as "Pengabdian Kepada Masyarakat" (abbreviated as PKM) that invited both social science teachers and students of Pontianak to local museums for a visit. The objectives of this training encompassed two main goals. Firstly, it aimed to generate interest among teachers and students in discovering and familiarizing themselves with the museum. Secondly, it sought to enhance the knowledge of teachers and students regarding the conservation of the museum's collections. Following the training, the lecturers gathered feedback from participants via a Google form to assess their opinions regarding the museum collection and artifact preservation training. This data was then analyzed using a quantitative approach, and the results were presented using descriptive statistics. A total of 19 individuals responded to the survey, consisting of 7 teachers and 12 students. The results indicated that the participants had a positive response to the activity and expressed a request for similar programs to be conducted in the future.

The departmental archive of the Russian Museum stores documents that are only now being put into circulation by scientific researchers. The enlightenment business, which has existed and developed for a century, has been the subject of point-by-point scientific study until now. The relevance of this study is to restore the identified gap. The Government of the Country of Soviets has set the task of educating a new person. For this purpose, the best forces of the country were gathered and cultural and educational institutions were founded for the development of various aspects of the personality of a child and a teenager. Since 1922, the Cultural and Educational Commission has been working in the Russian Museum, its task is “work among the masses”: lectures at enterprises, in leisure institutions. Her tasks included collecting applications for excursions, mastering the material with the help of library resources, advising single visitors. The School Commission is also well deployed, in addition to school education, clubs and sections have opened in the Russian Museum. On February 28, 1928, the Bureau of the Educational Service was established in the Russian Museum. The birth of a special unit in the structure of museum construction of the Soviet state marked the beginning of a new stage of museology — excursion and educational. The museum’s research and educational activities are increasingly converging and becoming an important means of cultural and educational activities.

Pollen samples from a bumble bee (Hymenoptera: Apidae) collection show historic foraging on introduced and native plants in the South Island of New Zealand.

Historic pollination networks are important to understand interactions between different plant and pollinator species, as well as to differentiate between causes and consequences of present insect population decline. Natural history collections in museums store biological proxy data, which is used to reconstruct historic pollination networks of bumble bees. Four bumble bee species (Bombus terrestris, B. ruderatus, B. hortorum and B. subterraneus) were introduced to Aotearoa New Zealand in 1885 specifically for pollination purposes. Pollen samples were collected from museum specimens of three of the four NZ species of bumble bee (excluding B. subterraneus) collected between 1954 and 1972 from 56 locations across the South Island, New Zealand. The most common plants identified on all three bumble bee species were Calluna vulgaris (heather), Ulex (gorse), Cytisus (broom), and Trifolium repens (white clover). However, all three bumble bee species also carried pollen from several native plants (e.g. Arthropodium, Weinmannia, Plagianthus, Quintinia, Veronica, Melicytus) and potentially had been involved in the pollination of these species. This study adds new plant species known to be foraged upon by bumble bees in Aotearoa New Zealand. Further studies on pollination networks in New Zealand will help us understand any changes in host plant preferences over time and after the time period covered by this study.

Development of Accessible Museum for Blind Tourists

As we know that museums store a lot of visual objects. So that blind people who do not have vision will have difficulty enjoying the visual objects of the museum. This study discusses the tourist attractions of the museum that can be enjoyed by blind tourists. To support this research, a qualitative research method with a case study approach was used. The results showed that blind tourists enjoyed museum attractions in two ways, hearing and touching. Information will be received by listening to museum educators explain stories about visual objects. Then to add information, blind tourists can touch the visual object. Accessibility that needs to be developed in Museum of the Asian African Conference is guiding block, braille, and audio media. Museum educators can be trained to be able to guide blind tourists properly.

The Material Inventories of Millennial Jewish Lives: Affective Learning and Jewish Consumer Culture at the National Museum of American Jewish History Gift Shop

Down the street from the Liberty Bell and a block away from Independence Hall, Philadelphia’s National Museum of American Jewish History (NMAJH) offers tourists a Jewish take on America’s past. For Jewish visitors to NMAJH, the museum sets personal narratives in national contexts, embodied by objects that have animated Jewish life for centuries. Most research on encounters between visitors and religious objects in museums is situated within exhibit galleries. Yet this focus on the gallery can overlook the holistic visitor experience in the museum, and the ways that object lessons can also be conveyed outside of the exhibit space. This article draws upon an ethnographic study of 30 millennial generation Jewish visitors to NMAJH conducted in July 2019, and analyzes visitor responses to Jewish objects for sale in the museum store. It argues that the store stimulates affective learning experiences, prompted when visitors respond to merchandise with emotion, aspiration and nostalgia, contextualize these goods within the narratives of the core exhibit, and reflect upon objects for sale in relation to their own lives and livelihoods.

Defining Damage and Susceptibility, with Implications for Mineral Specimens and Objects: Introducing the Mineral Susceptibility Database

ABSTRACT Damage and susceptibility are key concepts in conservation but are rarely explicitly defined. This paper provides definitions for these terms and applies them to mineral collections. Minerals are often overlooked in the context of heritage conservation due to their assumed stability. While many appear to be stable under ambient conditions, at least 10% of known mineral species are susceptible to temperature, moisture, light, or pollutant levels common in museum stores and displays. These susceptible minerals are represented in museums as natural history specimens (as crystals and inclusions within rocks and fossils), pigments in paintings, and deterioration products of other minerals, metals, and many other object types. A new online resource, the Mineral Susceptibility Database, has been designed to facilitate the preservation of minerals by providing relevant information in a single, accessible location. Data were collated and synthesised from various fields of research, many of which are not easily accessible to museum professionals. As an open repository of interdisciplinary research, the Mineral Susceptibility Database encourages informed decision-making and advocates cross-disciplinary communication, both of which are necessary to improve the care of mineral and geological materials.

The items of Islam and pre-Islamic beliefs of the Bashkirs in collection of the Museum of Archeology and Ethnography of the Institute of Ethnological Research of the Ufa Federal Research Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences

The subject of this research is museum sources on the religion of Bashkir people. The goal lies in examination of the items of Islam and pre-Islamic beliefs from the ethnographic collections of the Museum of Archeology and Ethnography of R. G. Kuzeev Institute of Ethnological Research of the Ufa Federal Research Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences. It is determined that the Museum stores over 50 items related to religion that were collected in the late XX century in the Republic of Bashkortostan, Kurgan Oblast, and Orenburg Oblast. These Islamic (Sunni Muslims) items are rather associated with the traditions and lifestyle of the Bashkir people: prayer rugs – namazlik, Quran, tasbih, tagiyah, ablution items – kumgan, dress of the Mullah. Prayer rugs are decorated with floral embroidery, with images of mosque, kumgan, crescent moon, and Arabic inscription. The collections also feature the items related to Shia Muslims – a stone used in prayer. Islam first infiltrated Bashkir culture in the X – XI centuries; by the XIII – XIV century it spread significantly; strengthening its positions with each century, it has fully integrated into life of Bashkir population by the end of the XIX century. Despite this fact, certain items pre-Islamic beliefs have retained in everyday life of the Bashkir people: amulets (amulet stones, juniper, feathers of wood grouse, goose down, etc.). Bashkirs were able to synthesize the pre-Islamic and Islamic tradition, which remain existing harmoniously in the territory of the Republic of Bashkortostan.

The article is devoted to conflicting assessments of the state of the museum in contemporary museum criticism: museums are experiencing either a protracted crisis or the Golden Age. The public is also criticized: people prefer to come to museums in order to be entertained with the help of new technologies and to achieve a scientific goal, and not in order to fulfill their civic duty (appreciating national treasure). In general, among the objectives of the museum (to form a “national imaginary”, to support a state ideology, to serve as a scientific and educational center, to entertain and give pleasure), the aesthetic is in the last place, but the current negative views about the state of a museum as a sociocultural institution are caused by the general suspicion that aesthetics has come to the fore as the most important factor. In order to correctly assess what is happening, modern approaches to the duties of the museum and the needs of the general public need to take the existing points of view on this subject in both Russian and international specialized literature into account. The analysis of the situation also involves data from Internet resources specializing in reporting on the modern art market, which is closely tied to museum politics. The article compares various approaches to the current situation: the goals and objectives historically attributed to the museum, a review of current exhibitions and of the technology used, a change in museum policy as a whole (in particular the fact that what was considered a profanation of a great idea 10 years ago has become a cultural norm today). Based on the results of the study, the following conclusion can be made: modern museums are indeed extremely commercialized. The most unexpected souvenirs are sold in museum stores. Para-museums openly parasitize on the tourist flow of large museums. More than that, nobody thinks twice about making a profit in any possible way, while simultaneously grumbling about the fall in cultural demands of the public. However, interest in museums among the general population remains unchanged, so asserting the widespread crisis of the modern museum is a very big stretch.

Comparative Inhibition Study by Nanomaterial, Plant Extract and Chemical Microcide on the Screaming Mummy in Egyptian Museum Store

Mummies in museums are exposed to different deterioration factors like microorganisms, especially unwrapped mummies, such as the screaming mummy. This screaming mummy in the store of the Egyptian museum is suffering from stains due to microbial infection. There are three trends of materials to inhibit microbial growth: nano materials, plant extraction and chemical materials. This research compares three materials representing the three trends such as nano zinc oxide (ZnO-NPs), Ceratophyllum demersum and 4-chloro-m-cresol, respectively. Microorganisms, isolated from the degraded mummy, were identified with an optical microscope and ribosomal ribonucleic acid (rRNA) analysis to guarantee identification accuracy. Results indicated that the bacteria in the mummy are Bacillus jeotgali, Kocuria turfanensis, Microbacterium imperial, Micrococcus luteus and Bacillus megaterium. Fungi are Monascus pallens and Rhizopus oryzae. The results of minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) illustrated that the best concentrations for the bio treatment of isolated microorganisms is plant extract (Ceratophyllum demersum) at 600 ppm/100 mL, followed by 4-chloro-m-cresol at 600 ppm/100 mL and finally nano zinc oxide at 700 ppm/100 mL.

Exploring Authenticity Through Classical Art: Originals, Fakes and Copies

ABSTRACT Today, standing in situ or displayed in museums, are several classical and post-classical copies of works of art. In contrast, fakes are usually locked away in museum stores. This dichotomy sparks a reflection on the authenticity attached to fakes and to copies of classical artworks. Building upon Denis Dutton’s work and drawing on a series of examples, this article contends that, although neither fakes nor copies are (the) original, copies are ‘nominally authentic’ regarding their authorship, origin, findspot, and/or provenance, whereas fakes are not. Also, copies are ‘expressively authentic’ in so far as they honestly fulfil the function for which they were created, are situated in the context of the original, or somehow speak of continuity with artistic and art historical traditions. On the contrary, once spotted, fakes lose their purpose and their intended audience, proving expressively inauthentic. Therefore, what fakes and copies have in common is their non-originality, explored here as both creativity and exemplarity or fecundity, that is, the capacity to originate an artistic or figurative tradition. The article concludes by asking what we are to do with fakes and contends that, as historical documents, they warrant exhibition since they can contribute to unlocking the multiple narratives surrounding originals.

Religious and Artistic Features of Elite’s Coffin during (LP) Late Period: Applied on Two Coffins at Hurghada Museum (HM)

There is no doubt that the ancient Egyptians used the coffins as a shelter for mummies from Prehistoric to the end of the Late Period. They had paid attention to the coffins because it is considered as safe means of passage to the other world and it is the guarantor for him to pass from darkness to light. So, the drawings were expressive and have religious dimensions. The author aims to study two unpublished coffins that belong to individuals; they date back to the end of the Late Period that was preserved in the Hurghada Museum (HM) after they were transferred from the Egyptian Museum stores in Cairo. The author studies the religious and artistic features found on these coffins, taking into consideration the period in which they were made, from the end of the 26th Dynasty to the end of the 30th Dynasty. Neither surveying nor comparing the artistic and religious decoration features of the Late Period coffins has been done by the author. This paper aims to compare the artistic and religious decoration features that occurred in the ancient Egyptian Late Period depending on these decorated coffins in the newly inaugurated ‘Hurghada Museum’. Two coffins reveal different artistic and religious decoration features that are studied. Analyses of religious and artistic in each of these coffins have taken place and major features emerged, then, these features and results are discussed. This paper was developed using analytical and comparative approaches based on document and picture analyses. It had been concluded that two coffins at the Hurghada museum had carried distinctive artistic and religious features of their era. These two coffins were able to preserve the religious traditions that prevailed before with some artistic changes in expressing these traditions to simulate the evolution of the era compared to the coffins of the New Kingdom.

Relationship value benefits of membership programs, heterogeneous stakeholders and museum impact beyond fees

AbstractIn times of decreasing public funding, cultural institutions such as museums increasingly develop new stakeholder management practices to build a different or more diversified support base. Recently, membership programs have especially been gaining popularity. In this paper, we adopt a relationship value approach to study the poorly understood behaviors of members that can benefit museums beyond membership fees. In particular, we focus on the extent to which membership level and the perceived prestige of the museum drive value co‐creation through prestige leveraging. We study this by using a sample of 430 members and non‐members of the Hermitage Museum in Amsterdam. We find that membership level is positively related with cross‐buying behavior at the museum store and restaurant, and recommending the museum. In addition, these value creating behaviors are mediated by members leveraging the museum's prestige in their social environment. In contrast, we find a negative relationship between membership level and recruiting new members into the program, which could be explained by status dilution effects.

In-Situ Evaluation of the Protectivity of Coatings Applied to Metal Cultural Artefacts Using Non-Destructive Electrochemical Measurements

Electrochemical Noise Measurement (ENM) and DC electrolytic resistance measurement (ERM) can be used to assess the level of protectiveness provided by an organic coating (paint or varnish) to the underlying metal. These techniques also have applicability to the thinner, transparent type of coatings used to protect archaeological artefacts. Two studies are presented here demonstrating how ERM and ENM techniques can be applied in artefact preservation. The similarity of the techniques, both of which are a measure of resistance, means results can be considered to be analogous. The first study investigated the use of ERM to determine the protection levels provided by typical coatings in order to develop a database of coating type and application for objects, for specific environments. The second study used ENM to evaluate coatings which had been applied to historic artefacts recovered from shipwrecks in the Baltic Sea and displayed inside the museum or kept in the museum store area. The studies showed the usefulness of both techniques for determining the level of protection of a coating and how a better performing coating can be specified if a pre-existing coating on an artefact has been found to be unsuitable.

An Applied Study for the Restoration and Conservation of a Museum-Stored Colored Stone Coffin lid from the Late Period

The colored stone coffin lids are exposed to many different deterioration factors, whether in the burial or exposure environment. In the burial environment, these colored coffin lids are subjected to the pressure of soil sediments, which leads to their being crushed into parts, especially since the case study is made of limestone. In the soil, caused by the presence of ground water, which leads to the crystallization of salts and the growth of microorganisms. Also, false excavation of these colored stone coffins lids and their transfer from equilibrium in the burial environment to the exposure environment leads to exposing to other pressures and may lead to irreversible damage and loss of color, as the temperature difference in the exposure environment and burial environment will lead to fissures and cracks as well. Crystallization of salts in the case of high temperature, as well as the difference in relative humidity levels, will lead to the dissolution of the color-bonding material and the dissolution of the air pollution gases, which leads to the formation of acids that interact with the material of these stone coffins lids to form water-soluble compounds, which leads in the end to the loss and deterioration of them. The selected object of study is a colored stone coffin lid no. 1939, broken into several parts of limestone (about 13 parts), dated to the Late Period and saved in Atifyah museum store – Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities- Giza – Egypt, samples were taken from limestone, red and black pigments and examined by optical microscope, polarizing microscope and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) also analyzed by X-Ray Diffraction (XRD). The restoration processes are summarized in cleaning, consolidation, assembling and loss- compensation for the selected colored stone coffin lid.

Transportation of Wood Boring Beetles in Wooden Transport Boxes, Wooden Pallets, and Newly Bought Wood in Museums

ABSTRACT In the past, woodborers like A. punctatum and X. rufovillosum were widespread in historic furniture, households, and building structures, but as they need a high wood moisture content and central heating and climate control have become common today their occurrence is rare and often limited to open-air museums, rural museums, and historic buildings. In this paper, we report on the spread and transportation of different wood-boring beetles with wooden pallets, wooden transport boxes used for art transportation, and also the rising problem of different Lyctus species (powder post beetles) in new wood used in museums. Not only the native Lyctus linearis but also the introduced L. brunneus, L. cavicollis, and L. africanus can be found in transport boxes (nine cases in Germany between 2003 and 2015), infestations of new picture frames (three cases in Austria between 2010 and 2015), and new wood sold to carpenters in museum and conservation studios (used for new stretcher and picture frames, two cases in Austria). In some cases (two in Germany) a newly-laid parquet floor was infested by powder post beetles. The house longhorn beetle (H. bajulus), the furniture beetle (A. punctatum), and the Anobiid Oligomerus ptilinoides were all found infesting wooden pallets inside museum stores (five cases in Austria). New wooden pallets and transport boxes are treated once with heat after production, but our examples show that infestation and transportation of wood pests are still possible and are a new challenge for integrated pest management (IPM) in the future. We examine and discuss the materials used to transport art and possible measures to combat and prevent pests (plastic pallets or the use of other wood types). In addition, the biology and life-history of powderpost beetles is described.
