Environmental and Technological Aspects of the Functioning of Municipal Solid Waste Recycling Complexes (on the Example of the Moscow Region)

The existing scheme, key operations and technologies used in the company for sorting and processing municipal solid waste in the Moscow region have been considered. The features of waste streams entering the waste processing system have been studied, quantitative and qualitative characteristics of the morphological composition have been presented, actual data on the composition of pollutant emissions generated at different stages of waste sorting and processing have been analyzed, the most problematic areas and priority eco-toxicants have been identified.

A method for determining the recycling value of unprocessed municipal solid waste in one cubic meter waste composition analysis technique

The transition from conventional landfill-centric waste management to resource-centric methodologies necessitates an enhanced comprehension of municipal solid waste (MSW) composition and its inherent value. Existing methodologies documented in the literature exhibit a lack of standardization, impending the formulation of a systematic engineering approach for MSW characterization and valuation. This study introduces a methodology specifically tailored to discern the composition of waste origination from urban households and evaluate its recyclability within the confines of a circular economy framework, Employing a volume-based measurement approach, aims to estimate the recycling value of waste materials. The study's outcomes contribute significantly to quantifying the potential recycling value that accrues to society. Furthermore, the validation of the proposed protocol elucidates the dynamic nature of recyclable value as it traverses the intricate pathways of the waste supply chain. This insight facilitates the formulation of commercial models grounded in circular economy principles for the effective management of household solid waste. Empirical findings reveal that the total recycling value fluctuates within the range of USD 3.39 and USD 5.76 per cubic meter of waste volume, contingent upon the specific waste composition at the experiment site. Additionally, the proposed methodology uncovers the nuanced variability in MSW composition and recycling value across diverse household collection patterns, identifying mixed plastic, paper, cardboard, mixed MSW, and clothing as primary constituents. The application of this methodology extends beyond mere quantification, providing a foundational framework for simulating the latent recycling value embedded within MSW samples. This, in turn, offers invaluable support to strategy developers, policymakers, and entrepreneurial ventures engaged in the sustainable management of household solid waste. A Master’s Course Can Emphasize Circular Economy in Municipal Solid Waste Management: Evidence from the University of Pisa

Municipal solid waste (MSW) represents a significant global threat, which has to be managed by a model of production and consumption involving the sharing, leasing, reusing, repairing, refurbishing, and recycling of existing materials and products for as long as possible, otherwise known as a circular economy (CE). However, there is not a universal rule for waste recycling strategies, and it has been demonstrated that active public participation is crucial in the satisfactory management of waste. In this context, citizen participation and education are two interrelated approaches, which can help to engage and inform people regarding waste and its wider impact. The present study describes the development of an interdisciplinary hackathon (hackathons are events whereby individuals from different backgrounds are brought together to work on the solutions to different problems), targeted to students of a postgraduate Master’s course on Sustainable Development and Climate Change in order to develop and understand the MSW problems and priorities currently being targeted, with the aim to propose new potential solutions for MSW reduction, reuse, and recycling. Following an empirical approach, four working groups were established and assigned the following specific tasks: (i) communication/citizen education on MSW; (ii) the reduction of MSW production; (iii) innovative solutions to recover and enhance secondary raw materials deriving from MSW processing; and (iv) the eco-design of the cities of the future concerning CE principles applied to MSW recycling. Overall, the following main findings were derived from the hackathon event: (i) an essential objective of the CE strategy is to drive Europe’s internal market towards the production and consumption of more sustainable products, thus reducing environmental and social pressures, while still retaining value; (ii) the most effective ways of tackling environmental problems are to ‘change the way we consume’, as well as to ‘change the way we produce and trade’, with the responsibility shared between businesses, governments, and the EU, as well as the citizens themselves. In this scenario, research and innovation play a key role in driving the necessary systemic changes to reach climate neutrality and ensure an inclusive ecological and economic transition. Overall, the present study confirms how the hackathon represents an effective tool to engage citizens in participation and education.

Comprehensive Study of Energy Characteristics and Biohazard Assessment of Municipal Solid Waste from the Landfill of the City of Atyrau

This article presents the results of the study of the morphological composition of municipal solid waste (MSW) from the landfill of Atyrau city, and the waste’s energy characteristics and presence of microorganisms, including bacteria, fungi and viruses. This study was carried out under a government order to determine the feasibility of recycling accumulated and incoming waste into electricity and its hazard to the environment and the workers involved in handling it. At the moment, there is no MSW recycling in Kazakhstan, which has led to the accumulation of more than 125 million tons of waste with an annual increase of 5 million tons. The research included four major cities (Almaty, Shymkent, Atyrau and Astana), which were selected not only on the basis of population, but also because the cities were located in different climatic zones. Samples were collected at the city landfills: 10 samples with an average distance of 100 m from each other were collected to provide a maximum coverage of both recently received waste and long-time stored waste. The research showed that neither climatic conditions nor the population size had a significant impact on MSW density, the values of which ranged from 120.1 kg/m3 to 145.4 kg/m3, as this indicator directly depends on the quality of life. The mass of the combustible fraction ranged from 39.41% to 54.62% and was mainly represented by plastic, textile and paper waste. The average value for the four cities was 50.30%. The higher calorific value fell in the range of 24.22–30.49 MJ/kg, with an average value of 26.71 MJ/kg. Microbiological studies showed little difference in average composition regardless of climatic conditions. Thus, no sharp differences in MSW composition, its energy characteristics and microbiological composition were found. The results of this study may be useful for optimising MSW recycling and disposal processes, as well as for developing measures to reduce their negative impact on the environment and human health.

The article considers the environmental problems of single-industry towns in the Russian Arctic via population assessments. When assessing environmental problems, a whole range of studies is applied — a sociological survey of respondents living in the single-industry towns of Kirovsk and Kostomuksha, economic statistics and desk research. Desk research makes it possible to draw conclusions about environmental complaints of mono-town residents and the environmental responsibility of the largest enterprises in the Arctic. The results of the study show that situation in Arctic regions with waste sorting and recycling is very acute. Almost all Arctic regions are among the outsiders. In conclusion, the authors formulate recommendations to improve environmental policy pursued in the Arctic mono-towns taking into account the population opinion. The proposed recommendations include the development of a migration model for the Arctic mono-towns, implementation of measures for the disposal and recycling of municipal solid waste, strengthening public environmental control, economic incentives for the use of clean technologies, development of ecological tourism, etc.

Greenhouse gas emissions mitigation potential of municipal solid waste management: A case study of 13 prefecture-level cities in Jiangsu Province, China

Municipal solid waste (MSW) treatment is one of the main anthropogenic sources of greenhouse gases (GHGs). To mitigate the GHG emissions of the MSW sector, it is crucial to describe their emissions evolutions and mechanisms and propose localized mitigation measures on that basis. The logarithmic mean Divisia index model is used to identify the driving forces of MSW-related GHG emissions and explore the mitigation potential. Jiangsu, a typical province in China with 13 prefecture-level cities, is selected as the case study. The results showed that GHG emissions from Jiangsu's MSW treatment has increased by nearly 2.5 Mt in the last 20 years, as incineration replaces landfills. Economic development was the dominant positive driving force, and MSW generation intensity was the dominant negative driving force. Scenario analysis revealed that the carbon peak of MSW management could appear if MSW source separation and recycling (SSR) were implemented, reducing GHG accumulation emissions by approximately 0.3–0.4 Gt during 2022–2060. Referencing the SSR of the Shanghai pattern will generate the greatest mitigation potential of GHG emissions among the different scenario designs. Finally, policy recommendations for priority cities, consideration of population and economic factors, optimization of MSW treatment structures and improvements to SSR are proposed, which could help local- and national-level decision makers in China and other countries design policy guides to promote carbon neutrality, while simultaneously linking current research areas to waste management practices as well as promoting practices in environment and sustainability.

Efficiency of Using Heat Pumps in a Hydrogen Production Unit at Steam-Powered Thermal Power Plants

The need to increase the level of beneficial recycling of municipal solid waste (MSW) and the focus on low-carbon energy are increasing interest in the production of hydrogen from MSW. The presence of free space and excess capacity makes thermal power plants (TPPs) the most rational objects for the integration of units that produce hydrogen from MSW. The use of heat pumps (HP) will make it possible to use waste heat, increase heat output, and optimize the TPPs’ operating modes. The purpose of the study is to analyze the effectiveness of using HPs in the scheme for producing hydrogen from MSW at TPPs. The integration of a hydrogen-generating unit into the thermal circuit of a TPP will provide the necessary amount of vapor for the production of hydrogen but will lead to a decrease in the thermal efficiency of the plant. The use of HP will partially compensate for this decrease. For plants with a turbine of type T-100/120-130, when using HPs to heat network water, the reduction in electricity generation will be 1.9–32.0%, and the increase in heat supply will be 1.7–14.2%. The reduction in specific fuel consumption for an electricity supply will be 0–1.2%, an increase in marginal profit of 0.1–6.4%, with the MSW disposal of 10–90 t/h, and the hydrogen generation of 0.8–18.9 t/h.

Recycling of Municipal Solid Waste in Construction

This article discusses a promising direction focused on the use of recycled municipal solid waste in construction. In Russia, there are problems related to municipal solid waste management, which necessitates the modernization of this process and confirms the relevance of the issues raised. Analysis and use of the experience of foreign countries in the processing of municipal solid waste and its secondary use in Russia contributes to the search for a more environmentally responsible approach that entails both economic and social benefits. The use of solid municipal waste recycling products in construction is aimed at minimizing the negative impact on the environment and is a step towards the transition to a circular economy, where waste is turned into valuable resources. The article reflects on the various methods of recycling municipal waste and analyzes the priority areas for the processing of municipal solid waste. In addition, examples of successful building projects using recycled products are given, and the challenges and prospects of this approach, as well as its significance for sustainable development and environmental responsibility in the construction industry, are revealed.

COVID-19, waste production and municipal recycling programs: Insights from Chile to the global south

The amount and characterization of municipal and industrial waste generated in numerous cities worldwide have changed dramatically in recent years due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Consequently, assessing the impact of COVID-19-related policies is important to provide decision-makers with adequate knowledge to respond effectively to future events and create successful policies that respond to specific contexts. This study focuses on Chile, Latin America's second-largest municipal and industrial solid waste producer, with tight quarantine procedures placed to prevent the virus from spreading, and a series of monetary incentives implemented to minimize the economic and social impact of the quarantines. The time series of municipal solid waste (MSW) and recycling in the metropolitan region show a decrease in the amount collected during the initial months of lockdown and a subsequent increase during monetary incentive implementation. The country recovered and exceeded pre-pandemic MSW generation and recycling levels. Furthermore, the lockdown and the withdrawal of retirement funds (WRF) had a varied impact on each municipality in the region. However, WRF had a larger direct impact than a lockdown, indicating that purchasing power has a greater impact than mobility in waste generation and recycling, at least in this region of Chile.

Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Incineration of Municipal Solid Waste in Seoul, South Korea

Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the incineration of municipal solid waste (MSW) have become a concern in the solid waste community from the perspective of climate change mitigation and response. In this study, we aimed to estimate the GHG emissions from the incineration of MSW in Seoul, with a population of about 10 million, by using the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) 2006 guideline and scenario analysis for 2030 and 2040. In 2021, Seoul generated 2899 kt of MSW/yr. Approximately 40% (1163 kt/yr) of Seoul’s MSW was disposable (or non-recyclable) waste. Out of the disposable waste, about 741 kt/yr of combustible waste was treated by incineration, resulting in 545 kt CO2 eq emissions, which was about 7.5 times higher than the 74 kt CO2 eq in 2000. The dominant contributor to the GHG emissions was plastic waste, accounting for the largest fraction of 92% (501 kt CO2 eq/yr in 2021). Scenario analysis showed that if the current situation (BAU scenario) is considered, with the assumption of no reduction in MSW generation, the capacity of Seoul’s four incineration facilities will be exceeded in 2029. All other scenarios (S1, S2, and S3) showed reduced amounts of MSW incineration and GHG emissions compared to the BAU scenario. Especially, S3 (waste reduction and increased recycling rate) revealed a 53% reduction when compared to the BAU scenario. Based on the results of our scenario analysis, it is expected that in 2040, the GHG emissions from incineration will be in a range of from about 389 kt CO2 eq to 832 kt CO2 eq, depending on the waste minimization policy and recycling efforts in the future. Strengthened regulations on and efforts towards plastic waste reduction and the recycling of MSW will be crucial with the perspectives of GHG emissions by incineration and resource recovery.

Attitude Is Not Enough to Separate Solid Waste at Home in Lima

Facilitating solid waste separating behavior at home continues to be a challenge for municipal programs in emerging economies. Large cities concentrate the generation of solid waste and, in Latin America, a great percentage of this waste is not re-used. Therefore, in this research, we explore the drivers motivating solid waste separation at home in Lima. We applied 450 surveys in two municipalities of Lima and analyzed the results through Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). The results demonstrate that attitude, perception of technical knowledge, and availability of physical space influence solid waste separation behavior. Additionally, the mediating role of intention between solid waste separation attitude and behavior is demonstrated. Municipal solid waste recycling programs in emerging economies tend to focus on educational and motivational actions, without giving due importance to space at home in order to manage solid waste. The lack of urban equipment and the limited availability of space at home introduce barriers that limit solid waste separating behaviors in emerging economies.

Community composting strategies for biowaste treatment: methodology, bulking agent and compost quality

The European Union’s commitment to increase recycling and recovery rates of municipal solid waste requires significant changes in current waste management. Local governments are developing various strategies for treating the organic fraction of municipal waste (biowaste) via composting. Community composting centres (CCC), green waste collection, treatment points and community gardens are some of these new approaches. Population density and spatial distribution, together with the existence of community green areas, determine the location of the various infrastructures for recycling local biowaste. The composting process consumes high amounts of bulking agent (BA) necessary to provide the structure that allows, amongst other uses, biowaste aeration and microbial surface colonisation. Shredded green waste from parks, gardens and households can be used as BA in community composting and home composting. In this study, a total of 46 compost samples obtained from CCC with two types of handling were analysed: 22 samples treated by vertical flow (VF) and 24 samples treated by horizontal flow (HF). The HF model allowed better use of the volume of modular composting units and the VF model required less effort and time for the CCC operator. Mature, stable and high-nutrient-content composts were obtained with both models. These composts met the legal requirements to be used as an organic amendment, and they can be delivered to the participants or used in community gardens in the municipality.

An Innovative and Alternative Waste Collection Recycling Program Based on Source Separation of Municipal Solid Wastes (MSW) and Operating with Mobile Green Points (MGPs)

Recently, among European Union (EU) member states, but also globally, there have been available and successful recycling and treatment practices of Municipal Solid Wastes (MSW). Greece has currently implemented low recycling levels, 21%, of the annually produced MSW, compared to the EU regulations. In 2021 the prefectural authorities of Attica Region launched a pilot program of rewarding recycling with source Separation called “THE GREEN CITY”. This program consists of 60 mobile green points (MGPs) that serve at a unified citizen awareness and MSW collection at 7-streams network throughout the prefecture of Attica. In this study, the whole design analysis of “THE GREEN CITY” pilot recycling program contained estimations and calculations of (a) the distances of all waste collection remote itineraries (basic analysis); (b) the annual fuel cost of the MGPs for the realization of all waste collection remote itineraries (financial-based analysis); and (c) the annual carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions into the atmosphere from the IVECO MGPs during the coverage of all waste collection remote itineraries (environmental-based analysis). Then a research synthesis of all these analyses revealed and evaluated the pilot recycling program’s real capabilities and limitations in alignment with: (a) its ultimate goal to help Greece achieve the setting target of Directive 2018/851 for at least 55% by weight recycling and reuse of the total annually generated Greek MSW by 2025 and (b) the MGPs proven ability to support environmental sustainability in densely populated prefectures such as Attica.

Metabolic Transformations in the Area of Municipal Solid Waste Management in Russian Megalopolises: The City of Moscow Case

Based on secondary data analysis and semi-structured expert interviews (n = 90), the study analyses metabolic transformations in the area of municipal solid waste (MSW) management in Russian megalopolises using the city of Moscow as a case study. The findings suggest that the key node that triggered numerous interdependent processes involved the changes introduced in the legislation on MSW management and the decision to shut down several large MSW landfills without the simultaneous implementation of other landfills. These actions affected the health of the population and contributed to environmental inequality. The authors provide recommendations for the mitigation of risks associated with MSW generation, recycling, and storage in large Russian cities.

How does the “Zero-waste City” strategy contribute to carbon footprint reduction in China?

The “Zero-waste City” program and carbon peak plan are currently vital environmental strategies in China. Solid waste management systems are closely related to greenhouse gas emissions, and “Zero-waste City” programs are highlighted because of their great potential for carbon footprint reduction and pollution mitigation. However, a knowledge gap remains in terms of quantifying the carbon footprint when implementing “Zero-waste City” programs. Here, we developed a methodology for accounting for the carbon footprint of a solid waste management system, and Ningbo city, which is one of the first demonstration “Zero-waste Cities” in China, was chosen as the study case. The material flow and carbon footprint of construction and demolition waste, industrial waste, hazardous waste, sludge, and municipal solid waste were analyzed. The results show that the carbon footprint of the solid waste management system in Ningbo city was −1679.9 Gg CO2_eq in 2018, which can be divided into 3472.5, 1131.3, and −6283.8 Gg CO2_eq by Scopes 1, 2, and 3, respectively. According to the scenario analysis, the SWMS in Ningbo city can achieve a carbon footprint reduction potential of at least 5771.5 Gg CO2_eq by 2025, by implementing the “Zero-waste City” strategy. This suggests that waste minimization, construction and demolition waste recycling, and municipal solid waste recycling are the most effective measures for carbon footprint reduction.

Quantitative Carbon Changes of Selected Organic Fractions during the Aerobic Biological Recycling of Biodegradable Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) as a Potential Soil Environment Improving Amendment—A Case Study

The aim of the investigation was to determine the quantitative changes of selected organic compounds during composting of municipal solid wastes (MSWs). The object of the study was a differently matured compost produced according the to open pile/windrow semi-dynamic technology from selectively collected biodegradable municipal solid waste. During the experiment, the temperature and moisture of the composted wastes were monitored. In the collected samples—taken from differently matured compost—the total organic carbon (TOC) and total nitrogen (TN) were determined. The organic matter fractionation method described by Stevenson and Adani et al. was adopted, which allows to determine the carbon content of the following groups of organic compounds: hydrophobic (HSC), hydrophilic (WEOC), acidophilic (CAC), cellulose (CCEL), core-HA (ligno-humic, CALK) and residual carbon (non-hydrolysing, CR). The TOC and TN content, as well as the origin and quality of the starting materials, allow the product tested to be classified for fertiliser purposes. The most intense changes were observed during the thermophilic composting phase. In spite of the optimal technological conditions of the process, the predominance of the CR and CCEL fraction was observed, and the share of humic compounds did not exceed 30% TOC. The investigated compost met legal, ecological and economic criteria for products of biological recycling, thus can be used as a good organic amendment to improve the soil organic matter balance, stimulate the soil biodiversity and carbon sequestration.

Comparative analysis on the performances of implementing compulsory and advocative policies in municipal solid waste classification

China, the world's second largest economy, has been facing a growing municipal solid waste (MSW) disposal problem. How to choose and implement the MSW classification policy in line with China's national conditions is very important to alleviate the predicament of MSW. However, the existing literature has not comprehensively and systematically compared the impact of compulsory and advocative policies on the effectiveness of MSW classification. To this end, Polynomial Distributed Lag (PDL) model is established to compare and predict the overall implementation effects of the two types of policies on front-end classification, mid-end transportation and terminal-end processing and treatment. The empirical investigation applies PDL model and takes Shanghai and Tianjin cities as case studies to forecast MSW policy performance in 2021–2025. The results show that the implementation performance of the compulsory MSW classification policy is generally better than the advocative policy, which is manifested in the speed of policy advancement, the classification rate and growth rate of various types of MSW, the utilization rate of MSW recycling and the economic benefits. However, in terms of mid-end clearance and transportation efficiency and facility construction, advocative policy appears to perform better than compulsory policy. The overall compliance rate of MSW classification in Shanghai increased from 28% to 77%, while that in Tianjin increased from 9% to 15%. By 2025, the amount of recyclable waste in Shanghai will account for 76.9% of the total MSW classification, which is more than five times higher than the advocative policy. Shanghai's annual output value of converting recyclable waste into various renewable resources or products through resource production can reach 227.613 billion or even to 341.368 billion yuan, far exceeding Tianjin's. Based on these findings, this paper puts forward countermeasures and suggestions for optimizing the policy system of MSW classification. This study provides empirical examples of China based on real data evidence and contributes to the literature on environmental science and MSW classification policy.

Waste-to-Energy Generation: Complex Efficiency Analysis of Modern Technologies

Recycling of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) is a significant challenge all over the world. Waste-to-Energy generation solves the problem of MSW recycling and produces power for urban territories. In this study, the researchers implemented complex economic and ecological efficiency analyses of modern Waste-to-Energy technologies. The fundamental challenge of modern Waste-to-Energy generations is finding the balance between economics, ecology, and productivity. Thus, to assess the effectiveness of various thermal technologies, statistics from enterprises were used. The Balanced Scorecard (BSC) method was implemented to calculate an integral effectiveness of a particular Waste-to-Energy technological approach. Environmental and economic analysess of thermal MSW disposal technologies was carried out by selecting the data from at least 146 functioning plants in Canada, China, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Sweden, and Thailand. The research results confirm that gasification technology was the most promising and the most environmentally and cost effective. Incineration Moving Grate technology was the least effective and attractive Waste-to-Energy technology according to the results of the environmental and economic efficiency assessments. The research results can be used for urban planning in waste recycling projects and the new energy national and municipal agenda. The research results can also be useful for municipal strategic energy and sustainable plans and programs.

Environmental Effects of Bio-Waste Recycling on Industrial Circular Economy and Eco-Sustainability

Few prior studies have examined the social and environmental consequences of waste generation and recycling, resulting in a policy gap in the sustainability agenda. The research filled a knowledge vacuum in the literature by investigating the environmental repercussions of different waste generation and recycling processes in the Chinese economy. The study analyzed waste production and recycling statistics over the last 46 years, from 1975 to 2020, and their impact on the nation’s emissions per capita. This study used four primary approaches to determine the links between the examined variables, beginning with the unit root test, which identifies the stationary process of the variables’ underlying processes. Second, the autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) model was used to produce the variables’ short- and long-run estimates. Third, estimations of Granger causality examined the causal relationships between the variables. Finally, innovation accounting matrices (IAM)were utilized to predict the relationships between variables during the following decade. The unit root estimates imply the mix order of variable integration; hence, it is appropriate to employ ARDL modeling for parameter estimations. The ARDL estimations demonstrate that combustible renewables and waste decrease a nation’s carbon emissions by boosting industrial waste recycling. Despite recycling systems, carbon emissions have escalated to uncontrolled levels owing to the massive production of municipal solid garbage. Sustainable waste management and recycling are vital to reducing carbon emissions. Granger’s estimations of causation imply that combustible renewables and waste and carbon emissions cause industrial and municipal solid waste recycling. Additionally, population growth is responsible for greenhouse gas emissions, biowaste recycling, and industrial waste recycling. Furthermore, this shows the two-way connections between combustible renewables and waste and carbon emissions, implying the need to develop green waste recycling strategies in a nation. The IAM method identified future relationships between variables, which aids policymakers in implementing sustainable waste management practices for a nation. This study concludes that the environmental consequences of waste generation and recycling impede the nation’s circular economy agenda, which can be sustained by knowledge spillovers, chemical reduction in manufacturing, and allocating a certain amount of US dollars to ecological resource conservation.

Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions From Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) in Oman

In Oman, the total quantity of MSW stood at 2.0 million tonnes/year. The emission from this waste is estimated at 2,989,467 tonnes/year (CO2 Equivalent). This article proposes different frameworks that considered landfilling, composting, and recycling of MSW and compared the emissions of these frameworks. The framework (F2) which includes landfilling and composting process for the organic waste which normally goes to landfills results in an increase of emissions by 7% as compared to current practice. likewise, the samples of MSW collected in Oman show a good amount of recycling waste. The framework (F3) which uses the landfill, composting and recycling reduced the total GHG emissions from 2.98 million tonnes/year to 2.95 million tonnes/year (CO2 Equivalent); resulting a total reduction of 1% in emissions. While composting increases the emissions but adopting composting and recycling can reduces the burden on landfills and can promote agricultural and industrial activates.
