A variety of recent works on few-body systems in hadronic physics will be reviewed, to illustrate the wide range of questions under investigation. The simplest system we consider is the tri-nucleon NNN, now accessible to precise calculation (even including relativity for the nucleons) using realistic NN interactions. New features enter for bound hypernuclear systems such as NNNY with Y = ( Λ, Σ), owing to the (Λ, Σ) mass difference, which introduces some unexpected effects. In contrast to these systems, where NN and NY have no low-energy resonances, the multichannel multiparticle system ( N N, π NΛ, π NΣ) appropriate to K −-deuterium reactions even from rest has a number of two-body sub-channels with strong resonances whose effects will be illustrated by Faddeev-type calculations. The motivations and usefulness of such calculations will be stressed. At a deeper level, baryons are themselves three-quark systems in which the quarks are coupled through the chromo-gluonic field. Although some two-quark terms (e.g. one-gluon-exchange) are important, the effective interaction generally involves all three quarks. In the strong-coupling limit, this field consists of gluonic strings starting and ending on the quarks but also joining three- or four-wise at a point. Calculations for low lying baryonic states thus involve multi-quark potential terms, and are treated as three-body systems having three-quarks potential. However, these gluonic strings can generate excitations, by transverse vibrations, giving states which are no longer simply “few-body”. Recent work on multiquark systems will also be discussed. The systems of two quarks and two antiquarks bound by two-body confinement potentials of harmonic radial form with SU(2) C symmetry has been solved completely by Londergan et al., whose results will be discussed in some detail. For the more realistic SU(3) C symmetry, the six-quark system qqqqqq, which includes the NN system, has been tackled by vibrational methods for harmonic confinement and the one-gluon-exchange interactions, with promising results.
