The Study on the Development of Internet-based Distance Education and Problems

The modern Internet-based distance education is steadily moving forward, and has attracted more and more people's attention and gradually showed strong development momentum. But some pressing problems also exist. Based on the current situation of the development of distance education in China, combining many years of experience and practice of investigation in distance education, the characteristics of the development of distance education are elaborated in the article, the importance of multimedia courseware in distance education is pointed out, and the problems existed in distance education and their perfecting countermeasures are particularly analyzed.

Multimedia courseware development for World Heritage sites and its trial integration into instruction in higher technical education

<span>This study reports on creative ways of using technology in the classroom, specifically the development of multimedia courseware on World Heritage through which learners are able to upgrade their knowledge and cognition regarding historical and cultural legacies from the past, and to improve English skills. The content of the pilot courseware included introductory texts about ten famous World Heritage sites combined with integrative English learning skills: reading, listening, speaking, writing and translation. An online evaluation system with an instant self-checking function was created to allow learners to examine work for themselves immediately and understand their learning progress and achievements. The courseware design was based on Mayer's multimedia learning cognitive theory, and the language learning focus drew on Chapelle's suggested criteria for development of multimedia, computer-assisted language learning (CALL). The courseware has been tried and used by two groups of students: sophomore and junior students of English as a foreign language (EFL) in a technical university in Taiwan. Initial evaluations suggest that students were satisfied with learning through courseware integration and their vocabulary comprehension was significantly improved. Junior students with higher English proficiency became more focused on practices of English skills and related learning activities, also also more satisfied with the content and design of the courseware.</span>

Interactive Design Research of Multimedia Courseware in Teaching

With the rapid development of information technology and the popularization of the Internet, the modern educational technology represented by multimedia teaching has become the development and reformation direction of modern teaching methods thus making the development and application of multimedia courseware in classroom teaching the inevitable choice for modern education. People generally consider multimedia courseware as the teaching courseware of organic combination of multiple media such as picture, style, sound, animation and video frequency, etc. However, they have neglected the most active factor throughout the multimedia, namely, interactivity. As classroom teaching-based multimedia courseware is characterized by interactive design, realizing the interaction function of student and computer, teacher and student is in request of discussing the interactive design thinking and production method of multimedia courseware and illustrating interactive design technology of courseware with certain system and structure. The interactivity of multimedia courseware in teaching should be comprehensively analyzed from the description of learning resources and teaching system so as to attain better teaching effect and serve for optimizing classroom multimedia teaching methods.

A Questionnaire Investigation of CAI on College Physics in 23 Higher Education Institutes of Henan Province

A Questionnaire Investigation of CAI on College Physics was carried out in 23 higher education institutes of Henan Province and the findings were compared with the teaching method in a traditional way. It has been proved that physics teaching at college assisted by multimedia courseware has some advantages over that in a traditional way since the former provided a larger output of knowledge, a higher level of knowledge acquisition compared with the physics teaching in a traditional way. And it is also found that text courseware alone might not achieve better results in the physics teaching at colleges.

Discussion on Design of Multimedia Courseware of Bridge Engineering

Computer aided instruction is an indispensable modern teaching method. How to make multimedia technology and traditional teaching methods complement each other to form an organic wholeness, and give full play to the advantages of multimedia technology is now a new research spot. In this paper, the characteristics of multimedia teaching method are analyzed in terms of advantages and disadvantages. Base on the bridge engineering course, the design method of multimedia courseware is introduced in terms of design basis, concept, teaching mode design, multimedia data embedding technology and so on. Problems deserving of attention in designing of the multimedia courseware such as the relationship between modern and traditional teaching method, matching of courseware and teaching points are also discussed in this paper.

Application of Multimedia Teaching in Psychological Health Education of College Students

With the coming of 21 century ,the need of developing multimedia courseware in psychological health education of college students arises which also meet the need of reform and further development of this field. However, there exists many unresolved problems which suggests that appropriate use of multimedia course ware is necessary . Recently, due to pressure from study , life , future employment , fierce competition in society , broke off the family ,some of the students tend to have mental problems such as obsessive--compulsive inclination , anxiety , distress , depression inconfidence etc. emerged in college students and they even take some extreme behaviors such as suicide murder . Mental heath of the college students become a significant issue highly concerned by school and the society . As to how to create an effective way for emotional health education prevent and solve the mental problems in college students , enhance their capability to let out emotional problems become an urgent issue confronting the professional psychological health education . Compared with traditional method , the advanced approach armed with multimedia , not only presents the updated educational concept and theory but also meet the demand to develop the modernized individual who is equipped with creative spirits , healthy physically and mentally and armed with practical skills . E--learning provide a new way for education reform, so the psychological health school should and will develop with the advanced technology.

The Example of the Development of Multimedia Courseware Simulating Physical Chemistry Experiments

The development process of software simulating physical chemistry experiments “The determination of saturated vapor pressure of liquid” as an example was shown based on Flash 8 software as a software developing platform and Photoshop as auxiliary software. The process of elements and instruments’ formation, the connection of instruments, the production of all kinds of scenes and their animation, the recording of sound, the simulation procedures were displayed. The courseware has been used in the physical chemistry experiment teaching. The good effect is obtained from the statistics of the student evaluations.

Courseware integration into task-based learning: a case study of multimedia courseware-supported oral presentations for non-English major students

AbstractThis study reports on the integration of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) multimedia courseware for oral presentations into a self-learning and elective program for non-English major students in an English as a Foreign Language (EFL) setting. A computer-aided instruction approach, combined with a task-based learning approach, was adopted. Computers played a central role as the means of information delivery. The courseware acted as a silent partner and played the role of a tutor and adjunct teacher to provide students with authentic materials for learning to give English oral presentations in international business and technical settings. It offered a variety of learning activities with instant on-line self-evaluation for students to practice integrative language skills and learn content knowledge. Evaluation of student performance was based upon data from pre- and post-tasks, student questionnaires about concerns, and an open-ended questionnaire. After active participation and self-learning, most of the non-English major students clearly indicated they had made some improvement or progress and felt their learning effectiveness for preparing speech texts was significantly improved. In addition, they had become more concerned about their English ability and the ESP courseware was able to meet their need for greater linguistic support to enhance their language ability.

컴퓨터 보조 학습을 통한 멀티미디어 어휘교육의 효율성

The purpose of this study is to discover if the use of computer technologies in computer-assisted language learning, in the aspect of vocabulary learning, is both effective and useful. The technique of using multimedia lessons, using the computer, offers a variety of language learning tasks in relation to the four basic language learning skills. Korean students have been accustomed to a cramming style of education, and they utilize rote memorization for learning vocabulary. This study consisted of surveys and experiments, using specific multimedia language learning courseware exercises on three different age groups. The study explores the issues and problems that followed, and how teachers could effectively apply or enhance their vocabulary teaching through computer-assisted multimedia which is suited for a variety of levels versus the classroom off-line vocabulary learning application which is suited to one level.

Study of Effectiveness and Usability of Multimedia Courseware Integrated with 3-Dimensional Model as a Teaching Aid

ools based on Information Communication Technology (ICT) face serious usability problem for effective implementation in education delivery. This paper presents the study of a multimedia courseware using 3-Dimensional (3D) model for teaching a mathematical topic on Lines and Planes in 3-Dimensions. A field study with experimental approach was carried out on randomly selected students whereby a group of students was exposed to conventional learning, whereas the other group was aided with 3D visualization software. Analysis of Current Situation and Prospect of Multimedia Technology in Physical Education of Chinese Universities

Through the questionnaire survey on the following five aspects: the developing status of multimedia teaching in physical education of Chinese universities, the construction progress of multimedia teaching technology in P.E. courses of universities, P.E. teachers’ self-positioning in making multimedia courseware, multimedia courseware’s distribution in physical education materials of universities, as well as the teaching effect of multimedia courseware in physical education of universities, the following conclusions can be reached: multimedia teaching technology has gradually become more and more important to physical educators in universities. Some universities have already begun to make attempts in multimedia physical education. Considering that, the paper has also constructively made prospective proposals for multimedia teaching technology in P.E. courses of Chinese universities.

An adaptive multimedia courseware for the students’ different cognitive styles: a pilot study for history subject

This article presents a study on the use of an adaptive multimedia technology for teaching the narrative subject in nature. This study is conducted to examine the effects of a Multimedia Segmental Instruction (M-B) and Multimedia Simultaneously Instruction (M-S) on students’ achievement and motivation in the learning of history subject.The M-B was assigned to 40 students whereas the M-S was assigned to 42 students. This quasi-experimental study employed a 2 × 2 factorial design. The independent variables were the multimedia approaches, i.e. the M-S and the M-B, whereas the dependent variables were the students’ achievement and motivation. Students’ cognitive styles (field-independent, FI or field-dependent, FD) and gender (male or female) were the moderator variables. Collection and analysis of data were carried out quantitatively. Descriptive statistical analysis was used to measure the effectiveness of instruction assisted with multimedia materials. The findings showed that all respondents unanimously agreed that; (i) the M-B students performed significantly better and were significantly more motivated than the M-S students, (ii) the FI students did not perform significantly better but were significantly more motivated than the FD students, (iii) the male students did not perform significantly better but were significantly more motivated than the female students.

Development of Interactive Courseware for Learning Basic Computer System Components

A computer assisted learning approach was developed to enhance course material for students to learn about computer components, through the use of multimedia courseware. Recent advances in software authoring packages have made the production of CD-ROMs an efficient and effective educational strategy. Problem statement: This study reports on the development an evaluation of this courseware related to the learning basic computer system components through the use of courseware (iC-COM). The purpose of the study was to evaluate a courseware for learning basic computer system components. The basic components of iC-COM included an interface, graphics, sound effects, narration and video. Approach: The iC-COM was developed based on the ADDIE instructional system design model. The research instrument was the courseware evaluation in the form of questionnaire that consisted of various attributes included content, interactivity, navigation and screen design which distributed to 50 computer system and support programme students of Kolej Komuniti Jasin. Results: Based on the results, it was shown that the analysis results of each questionnaire item mean ranged from 3.5 to 3.8. Conclusion/Recommendations: For future enhancement, it is recommended that iC-COM will be integrated into web-based platform so it can be accessed easily anywhere.

The Simulations of Movements in the Process of Machining the Lathe Spindle

In this paper, the processes of the lathe spindle are firstly introduced. Next, 3DS MAX software is used to model the lathe spindle with actual sizes. Based on the 3D model of the spindle, the 3D model of its blank is established according to the characteristics of the spindle. All used cutting tools are modeled in 3DS MAX software. Then the changes in the allowance and the movements of cutting tools and the workpiece are simulated in this software. At last, all animations are composed with appropriate explanations. The synthetical animation is saved as a .avi type file to play the machining simulation. And also, the file may be loaded into a multimedia courseware to explain the whole process to students in class. The machining simulation can improve the efficiency and effectiveness of learning. It can be given to students as a tutorial to use to teach oneself.

Design of Multimedia Courseware Sports Theory Based on Visual Basic

With the development of modern educational technology, multimedia courseware has become the new trend of educational technology. Multimedia courseware, in educational practice, has been the key to promoting multimedia-aided teaching. By means of using VB to write the physical theory, multimedia courseware can undoubtedly enrich and improve teaching quality. This paper, based on the VB language development environment, focuses on how to design physical multimedia courseware and discusses some key techniques in the process of courseware implementation.

Developing and integrating courseware for oral presentations into ESP learning contexts

This study reports on the development of ESP (English for Specific Purposes) multimedia courseware on oral presentations, and its integration into self-study learning and elective courses for students with different English proficiencies, as one solution to problems in ESP courses in Taiwan. The courseware design is based on Mayer’s multimedia learning cognitive theory, and the language learning focus draws on Chapelle’s suggested criteria for development of multimedia CALL. Evaluation of student performance with two different formats for courseware integration is based upon data from pre- and post-tests for preparing speech texts, and a questionnaire survey. The courseware provides authentic materials with a logical situational layout and a friendly interface design for learning ESP for oral presentations in international business and technical settings and offers rich and flexible learning activities with corresponding on-line self-evaluation so that students actively engage in cognitive processing. Students with different English proficiencies have different concerns about giving a presentation. Meanwhile, after students’ self-study for six weeks, regardless of level of proficiency, students’ learning effectiveness and satisfaction with the courseware integration were significantly improved, by qualitative and quantitative analysis. Such students’ improvement suggests success of the courseware design and learning effectiveness with its integration.

Multimedia courseware for teaching of rapid prototyping systems

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to detail the development of a multimedia courseware that enhances the learning of rapid prototyping (RP) among professionals, senior year and graduate students.Design/methodology/approachThe design and development of the multimedia courseware is based on a “visit a science museum” concept where each topic can be accessed depending on the interests or the needs of users. Factors that influence learning curve such as structure of information, application of visual and auditory components and human‐computer interface are addressed and discussed.FindingsInstructions using multimedia significantly enhances the education process of RP technology. Methods to produce a good multimedia courseware have been introduced.Originality/valueThis paper describes the latest version of the multimedia courseware which is an accompaniment to the third edition of the book entitled Rapid Prototyping: Principles & Applications published in 2009.

The Effect of Using an Interactive Multimedia Courseware within a Collaborative Learning Environment on the Learning of Pre-Algebra Concepts among Pre-University Engineering Students

Students enrolled into an engineering programme are expected to have good grasps of mathematical concepts and procedures as mastery of mathematics is essential to succeed in engineering based programmes. However, many new engineering students do not possess adequate mathematical skills and as a consequence, engineering teachers often have to spend time on remedial work in the first two semesters of the programme which is counter productive for all. Even with remediation, the outcome is not always satisfactory. To enhance the effectiveness of our teaching and learning efforts we tested the use of a blended teaching and learning method (CDiCL) where a specifically designed courseware based on the Herman Brain Dominance theory was used within a collaborative learning environment. The courseware provides opportunities for individually paced drill and practice while the collaborative learning environment provided opportunities for social learning support from peers. We compared the CDiCl method to three other methods, namely using the courseware only (CD), using collaborative method only (CL) and using the conventional method. We found out that the CDiCL group performs similarly to the CD group but was superior to the CL group. Affective factors like attitude and motivation played major roles towards this outcome.
