Publishing Children Books by Minority Voices in Canada: The Case of Groundwood Books

In Canada today the children’s book publishing scene is quite different from what it used to be in the 1970s and 1980s. Even if most publishers are small and rely heavily on federal grants the sheer range of publishing houses which feature the multicultural composition of the country for children and young adult readers is vast. The pendulum covers houses such as Annick Press, Fifth house, Second Story, or Theytus Books. The situation forty years ago though was radically different. In those days one of the groundbreaking houses was Groundwood Books. In this article we intend to look into the origins of the project, the wider political, social and cultural context, and three works by minority voices which clearly marked the publishing house’s profile and aspirations (Paul Yee’s Tales from Gold Mountain, Thomas King’s controversial A Coyote Columbus Story and Shirley Sterling’s My Name is Seepeetza). Our aim thus is to afford insight into the part played by Groundwood Books in fostering a new poetics in children’s books within the framework of Canada’s nation-building process.

In urban landscape planning, first - and biennial grass flowers are one of the important plant materials in urban greening. Grass flower landscape can not only enhance the effect of land cover, highlight the value and characteristics of herbaceous flowers in landscaping. At the same time, the sustainable development of urban landscape planning is not only reflected in the tangible business products, on the activities of planning and preparation also should pay attention to ecological environment, not blind pursuit of economic efficiency, and coordination of landscape ecology and environment, the relationship between development and resources to build, make the landscape design of the Marine landscape more meaningful.

A Study on the Construction of Xianning Ecotourism Greenway Brand Project

The boutique villages, intangible cultural heritage, cultural and historical sites, natural landscape, agricultural industry and other resources along the road network in Xianning are closely linked through the construction of greenways. Strengthening the construction of ecotourism greenways and building the city’s brand image is an important measure to accelerate the green development of Xianniang and realize that “green mountains are gold mountains” in the new era.

In Vision of Paradise , Sergio Buarque de Holanda affirms the myth of Sao Tome as the only conquest myth of Luso-Brazilian origin. Unlike the Castilian world, which was guided – as of the earliest letters penned by Christopher Columbus – by imaginary questions on the idea of Paradise on Earth, the source of youth, the Amazon and its treasures, and the white king and his mountains of gold, the Portuguese world was more modestly and uniquely nourished by a fantasy based on the mythology of Sao Tome [Saint Thomas] and his journey around the world. In Brazil, Manuel da Nobrega’s earliest letters on the term “ Sume ” are used to refer to the figure of Tome , to human footprints, and to a mysterious messenger of supernatural truths establishing communication between Brazil and India, and these regions with the Catholic-Portuguese world. The myth of Tome or Sume thus serves as a historical solution or an intellectual and imaginary attempt to link Brazil and Asia and both to the Christian cosmology.

Promoting the Construction of Beautiful and Rich China with the Theory of Soil and Water Ecology

Started from the problems and perplexities of ecological environment in China, the scientific principle and value of the theory of soil and water ecology are discussed. It is thought that the theory of soil and water ecology clarifies the complicated problems of ecological environment. Environmental pollution can be controlled, but it is only a matter of time and cost. Soil and water ecology is the root of ecological environment problems. The clean water and green mountain are destroyed, which cannot be restored. With the theory of soil and water ecology, the idea that clean water and green mountain are golden and silver mountains is read, as well as the way of turning clean water and green mountain into golden and silver mountains and its different impacts on eco-environment. The developed and underdeveloped areas should treat the idea that clean water and green mountain are golden and silver mountains. The application of the theory of soil and water ecology in soil and water conservation broadens the space of soil and water conservation, and it is necessary to establish a national commission for the conservation of soil and water ecology. The theory of soil and water ecology is the golden key to solve the problems of contemporary ecological environment and the theoretical basis for building a beautiful and rich China.

Concept and Practice of Open-pit Mining Area Restoration and Reuse --- Taking an Open-pit Coal Mining Area in Datong, Shanxi as an Example

The restoration of open-pit mining coal mine areas is imminent, and it is of great significance to put forward a set of reasonable restoration concepts. According to the geographical location and economic conditions of the mining areas, this paper combines multiple restoration concepts and measures such as “fundamental reforestation”, “near-natural restoration”, “introduction of agricultural and forestry industries” and “development of cultural tourism in abandoned land” in a scientific way, the combination has been successfully applied in the restoration and comprehensive utilization project in an open-pit coal mine area in Datong, Shanxi, China. This concept realizes the reuse of abandoned open-pit coal mines and closely follows the national strategy of poverty alleviation and rural revitalization, in pursuit of the national vision of “clear waters and green mountains are mountains of gold and silver.”

Study on the Construction Planning of Forest Products Industry in Cangwu County Based on the Principles of Green Development and Circular Economy

Forest products industry is a green industry and a sunrise industry. As the largest green economy, it plays an important role in effectively alleviating the contradiction between supply and demand of wood, realizing the sustainable utilization of forest resources and realizing the development goal of circular economy. It has played a positive role in improving the ecological environment, promoting industrial agglomeration, promoting the development of related industries, and maintaining wood safety. Through scientific and technological innovation driven and industrial agglomeration, a forest products industrial cluster area integrating production and manufacturing, scientific and technological research and development, exhibition and sales will be built in Cangwu county. To strengthen and expand forest industry in Guangxi province, the level of resource utilization has been significantly enhanced, the product quality has been greatly improved, and the industrial chain has been further extended. Efforts should be made to develop the downstream furniture, wooden door, and wood flooring manufacturing industry, and also to improve the industrial scale, standardization and intensification, to strengthen the industrial innovation system, to establish the industrial chain led by leading enterprises, to create a tree shaped industrial structure, as well as to establish coordinated development. We should exhibit the modern industrial system, build the forest industry into the pillar industry of Cangwu County, turn the green water and green mountains into gold and silver mountains, and build the concentration area into the national forestry industry demonstration park in China.

Chinese Immigration during the 1800s in the United States

The first wave of Chinese immigration was between 1849 to 1882, and 110,000 Chinese immigrants had settled on the west coast of the US, attracted by “Gold Mountain” in California and the large employment of railroad workers (Hsieh). When some anti-immigration acts passed, especially the Chinese Exclusion Act in 1882 which banned Chinese immigration for ten years, only certain documented immigrants were allowed to come to America (Carlin). The Chinese Exclusion Act was not repealed until 1943 when the US need a smooth relationship with China in World War II (Ashabranner). Although the Immigration Act of 1965 continuously had a restrictive impact on Chinese immigrants, productive Chinese immigrants made great contributions to the US economy and politics in a large number of industries and business. One example is building the long railroad which allowed communications between the West and the East, and unified the country after the Civil War. They also brought their cultures to the add to diversity in the United States (Documentary :Silent Chinese laborers in the US). As time went on, more and more Chinese started their new lives in the land which across the Pacific Ocean from their hometowns because of political, economic, and academic factors (Hsieh).

Beyond Big Gold Mountain: Chinese-Australian Settlement and Industry as Integral to Colonial Australia

ABSTRACTAustralian historiography has generally treated both the architecture and the industry of non-Western immigrants as marginal phenomena. However, Chinese settlements were not only integral to the nineteenth-century goldmining industry in Australia, but also critical to the wider development of northern Australia. Beyond this, Chinese settlers were instrumental in the establishment of market gardening, plantation agriculture, cabinet making, and laundry industries in the late nineteenth century, all of which had architectural manifestations that provided integral if unprivileged elements to Australia’s developing cultural and aesthetic landscape. The following text aims to provoke ongoing questions about Australia’s architectural identity in a context where reconsideration of the integral role of Chinese settlers in the development of Australian society might not only apply more widely to the flows of people from China in the period of Australia’s establishment as a nation but also to the contributions of Chinese-Australian industry to the local built environment.

Green Design in the View of Sustainable Development

With the continuous rising of economic benefits and the increasing innovation of science and technology, the relationship between human beings and natural environment is becoming more and more prominent. Especially after the world enters into industrialization, human beings plunder resources recklessly and destroy the stable cycle of ecological environment. In recent years, China has put forward the development concept of "not only the golden and silver mountains, but also the lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets”. The 13th Five-Year Plan of China has established five development concepts: innovation, coordination, green, openness and sharing. The concept of "green" has been incorporated into the national strategic design, which highlights the harmonious development between human beings and nature, people and people. As the guider in the future, under the background of sustainable development, the green design takes innovation as the starting point, so as to become the permanent motive force of green development.
