ABSTRACT To elucidate the influence of physical characteristics of earthquake input models on seismic responses of Hardfill dams, three earthquake input models are selected to perform investigations. First, the theoretical basis of earthquake input models is presented, and the radiation-damping effect and the complex wavefield effect derived from the physical characteristics are clarified. Then, the seismic response of a Hardfill dam under different earthquake input models is investigated, by taking the Oyuk dam as an example. Finally, the influence of the radiation-damping effect and the complex wavefield effect on the seismic response of the Hardfill dam are revealed quantificationally. The results show that only the complex wavefield model can accurately capture characteristics of the wavefield and the motion field. The radiation-damping effect significantly reduces the seismic response, while the complex wavefield effect increases it in most cases.
