Physiological Changes and Nutritional Value of Forage Clitoria Grown in Arid Agro-Ecosystem as Influenced by Plant Density and Water Deficit

Forage crop productivity has lately reduced in countries located in arid and semi-arid regions worldwide due to intensive consumption and the successive years of drought. This problem is exacerbated by the progress of water scarcity. Thus, the current study is aimed at improving the forage productivity and quality of clitoria as a leguminous fodder crop to be involved in crop rotations under low water supply conditions. As an attempt for facing the drought issue, a two-year (SI and SII) field experiment was conducted to evaluate the influence of irrigation pattern (IP) and plant density (PD) on clitoria morpho-physiological attributes, nutritive value, productivity, and irrigation water-use efficiency (IWUE) in two growth cycles (GCI and GCII). Based on the soil water depletion method, three irrigation patterns of 100% (IP0%, full irrigation), 80% (IP20%), and 60% (IP40%) were applied. The tested plant densities were 33 (PD33), 22 (PD22), and 17 (PD17) plants m−2. Findings revealed that IP0% × PD22 was the efficient treatment for enhancing the physio-biochemical attributes. However, in SI IP0% × PD22 statistically at par (p≥0.05) with IP0% × PD33, IP20% × PD22, and IP20% × PD17 (for chlorophyll content in GCI); IP0% × PD17 and IP20% × PD22 (for leaf relative water content in GCII); and IP0% × PD33, IP20% × PD33, and IP20% × PD22 (for cell membrane stability index in GCII). Along the two seasons, IP40% × PD33 was the potent practice for producing the highest leaf: stem ratio in both GCI (2.07 and 1.78) and GCII (1.18 and 0.96). Under IP40%, PD33 treatment recorded the greatest protein content in both GCI (24.1–27.0%) and GCII (21.7–19.5%) of SI and SII equaling PD22 in GCII (21.2–18.9%) of both seasons and PD17 in both GCI (24.0%) and GCII (21.5%) of SI and GCII (19.3%) of SII. The best aggregate protein yield for SI and SII was obtained under IP20% × PD33 interaction (1.36 and 1.40 t ha−1) without significant difference (p≥0.05) with IP0% × PD33 or IP40% × PD33 interactions. The greatest aggregate dry forage yield was observed in SI under IP0% or IP20% combined with PD33 (7.77 and 7.52 t ha−1) which did not differ significantly (p≥0.05). It could be concluded that irrigation by 80% water of full irrigation was found to be an efficient water-saving tactic coupled with adjusting the plant density of 33 plants m−2, which improved clitoria forage quantitative and qualitative properties, in addition to enhancing IWUE. Since leaf relative water content and cell membrane stability index decreased and proline increased in plant tissues under deficit water, clitoria is plant considered a moderately drought tolerant. Thus, clitoria is a promising plant could be successfully grown under arid agro-ecosystems.

Biocontrol Efficacy of Endophyte Pseudomonas poae to Alleviate Fusarium Seedling Blight by Refining the Morpho-Physiological Attributes of Wheat.

Some endophyte bacteria can improve plant growth and suppress plant diseases. However, little is known about the potential of endophytes bacteria to promote wheat growth and suppress the Fusarium seedling blight pathogen Fusarium graminearum. This study was conducted to isolate and identify endophytic bacteria and evaluate their efficacy for the plant growth promotion and disease suppression of Fusarium seedling blight (FSB) in wheat. The Pseudomonas poae strain CO showed strong antifungal activity in vitro and under greenhouse conditions against F. graminearum strain PH-1. The cell-free supernatants (CFSs) of P. poae strain CO were able to inhibit the mycelium growth, the number of colonies forming, spore germination, germ tube length, and the mycotoxin production of FSB with an inhibition rate of 87.00, 62.25, 51.33, 69.29, and 71.08%, respectively, with the highest concentration of CFSs. The results indicated that P. poae exhibited multifarious antifungal properties, such as the production of hydrolytic enzymes, siderophores, and lipopeptides. In addition, compared to untreated seeds, wheat plants treated with the strain showed significant growth rates, where root and shoot length increased by about 33% and the weight of fresh roots, fresh shoots, dry roots, and dry shoots by 50%. In addition, the strain produced high levels of indole-3-acetic acid, phosphate solubilization, and nitrogen fixation. Finally, the strain demonstrated strong antagonistic properties as well as a variety of plant growth-promoting properties. Thus, this result suggest that this strain could be used as an alternate to synthetic chemicals, which can serve as an effective method of protecting wheat from fungal infection.

Comparative Effects of Hydropriming and Iron Priming on Germination and Seedling Morphophysiological Attributes of Stay-Green Wheat.

Seed priming is considered to play an essential role in the overall improvement of agricultural crops. The current research work was carried out in order to investigate the comparative effects of hydropriming and iron priming on the germination behavior and morphophysiological attributes of wheat seedlings. The experimental materials consisted of three wheat genotypes including a synthetically derived wheat line (SD-194), stay-green wheat genotype (Chirya-7), and conventional wheat variety (Chakwal-50). The treatments included hydro (distilled and tap water)- and iron priming (10 and 50 mM) of wheat seeds for 12 h duration. Results indicated that both priming treatment and wheat genotypes exhibited highly different germination and seedling characteristics. These included germination percentage, root volume, root surface, root length, relative water content, chlorophyll content, membrane stability index, and chlorophyll fluorescence attributes. Furthermore, the synthetically derived line (SD-194) was the most promising in majority of the studied attributes by exhibiting a high germination index (2.21%), root fresh weight (7.76%), shoot dry weight (3.36%), relative water content (19.9%), chlorophyll content (7.58%), and photochemical quenching coefficient (2.58%) when compared with stay-green wheat (Chirya-7). The study also found that hydropriming with tap water and priming wheat seeds with low concentrations of iron yielded better results when a comparison was made with wheat seeds primed at high concentrations of iron. Therefore, wheat seed priming with tap water and iron solution for 12 h is recommended for optimum wheat improvement. Furthermore, current findings suggest that seed priming may have the prospect of an innovative and user-friendly approach for wheat biofortification with the aim of enhanced iron acquisition and accumulation in grains.

Waterlogging stress reduces cowpea (Vigna unguiculata L.) genotypes growth, seed yield, and quality at different growth stages: Implications for developing tolerant cultivars under field conditions

Waterlogging is a significant abiotic stress that reduces the oxygen supply to roots in the rhizosphere, impairing plant growth and development. Cowpea is highly sensitive to waterlogging, and their grain yield is affected by genotype and growth stage. Understanding the growth and physiological responses of cowpea to waterlogging stress is crucial for developing strategies to improve crop yield in waterlogged environments. In this two-year field trial, we quantified the impact of ten days of waterlogging on morpho-physiological attributes, seed yield components, and seed quality of two cowpea genotypes (UCR 369 and EpicSelect.4) at different growth stages. Waterlogging during the reproductive (R2) growth stage had the most substantial impact on cowpea, with an average reduction of leaf area by 65%, chlorophyll content by 39%, stomatal conductance (gs) by 93%, and photochemical efficiency by 32% compared to non-waterlogged plants. These effects were less pronounced during the vegetative (V4) and physiological maturity (R7) growth stages. Lower photosynthetic capacity resulted in reduction of biomass accumulation, pod dry weight, number of pods per plant, and seed weight under waterlogging. EpicSelect.4 was more sensitive to waterlogging at the R2 stage, showing a greater reduction in seed yield (58%) compared to UCR 369 (46%). Additionally, UCR 369 maintained seed protein content under waterlogging conditions, while it decreased by 8% in EpicSelect.4 seeds. Overall, UCR 369 was more tolerant to waterlogging stress than EpicSelect.4, with the most apparent effect of waterlogging on yields occurring at the R2 stage due to the high energy demands of the cowpea reproductive process. Our study highlights the importance of selecting cowpea genotypes with greater tolerance to waterlogging stress during the reproductive stage to mitigate the negative effects of waterlogging on seed yield in flood-prone environments. These results provide valuable insights into the mechanisms of cowpea's responses to waterlogging stress and can aid in developing strategies for improving cowpea yield in waterlogged environments, which are expected to become more frequent due to climate change.

Modulation of Antioxidant Defense Mechanisms and Morpho-Physiological Attributes of Wheat through Exogenous Application of Silicon and Melatonin under Water Deficit Conditions

Although the individual influences of silicon (Si) and melatonin (MT) have been widely studied under various abiotic stresses, little is known about their interaction under drought stress. In this study, an experiment in pots was carried out to investigate the potential of an individual or combined foliar application of silicon (Si) and melatonin (ML) (control (ck), water spray, 4.0 mM Si, 200 µM ML, and 4.0 mM Si + 200 µM ML) on wheat grown at two different water-holding capacity levels (80% well-water condition and 40% drought stress) in order to check of grain yield and some important physiological characteristics. Under drought stress conditions, grain yield and yield attributes, water content and photosynthetic efficiency of wheat crops were significantly decreased. Application of Si+ ML significantly improved leaf pigments (Chl a, Chl b and Chll a + b), leaf relative water content (RWC), proline, total soluble sugars, and total soluble protein. As well as, the activities of important antioxidant enzymes, including catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD) and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) were effectively boosted through the combined application of Si + ML. This improvement was correlated with an obvious decrease in the levels of MDA, H2O2, and electrolyte leakage and increased water use efficiency. Conclusively, the combination of Si + ML significantly enhanced the 20.21% yield and various morpho-physiological attributes of drought-stressed wheat plants and can be recommended as a promising treatment to enhance wheat productivity in drought-affected regions. Additionally, the results of this study may open up a whole new area of research opportunities at the transcriptional level to further understand the mechanisms underlying how Si + ML integrates and interacts with plants under drought stress.

An integrated remediation approach using combinations of biochar, Rhizobium leguminosarum, and Vigna radiata for immobilizing and dissipating cadmium contaminants from the soil-mustard plant system.

Cadmium (Cd) contamination of soils is an environmental concern, as cadmium harms food crops and can therefore impact human health. The use of combinations of biochar (seeded with Rhizobium leguminosarum) and Vigna radiata (as an intercrop) has the potential to reduce the mobilization of Cd from soil via mustard plants (Brassica juncea). Mustard plants are grown as a food and oil production crop that is consumed worldwide. However, this plant has the property of hyperaccumulation; thus, it bioaccumulates Cd in its tissues, which in turn, if eaten, can become part of the human food chain. Hence, reducing Cd bioaccumulation in mustard plants is crucial to making these plants a reliable and safe source of food for consumption. To improve soil sorption capacity and immobilization efficiency, biochar (in the form of wheat husk) was mixed with R. leguminosarum and intercropped (using V. radiata) with mustard plants for further investigation. Sampling was performed at an early growth stage (i.e., at 30 days) and at maturity (i.e., at 60 days) to determine the impact of Cd on a plant's morphophysiological attributes. Data were analyzed in two ways: first by analysis of variance (ANOVA) and then by the post hoc Tukey's honestly significant difference (HSD) test. The statistical analysis concluded that combinations effectively improved plant traits by 65%-90% in the early growth stage and by 70%-90% in the maturity stage. The T6 treatment combination [i.e., biochar+R. leguminosarum+V. radiata (BC+RL+VR)] provided the most effective results in terms of growth, biomass, pod yield, and pigmentation content. In addition, this combination reduced the translocation of Cd in mustard plants by 70%-95%. The combination of BC+RL+VR effectively reduced Cd contamination of mustard tissue and provided a suitable growing environment for the plants. A post-harvesting soil analysis using X-ray diffraction (XRD) found that Cd was undetectable in soil. This provides clear confirmation that these approaches can lead to Cd soil remediation. Moreover, this study provided insight into the responses of different morphophysiological attributes of mustard plants to Cd stress and could aid in developing Cd stress tolerance in mustard plants.

Effects of microbial biostimulants (Trichoderma album and Bacillus megaterium) on growth, quality attributes, and yield of onion under field conditions

Microbial biostimulants (MBs) promote plant growth and stress tolerance in a sustainable manner. However, precise field trials of MBs are required in natural setting with a range of crop varieties to harness the benefits of biostimulants on crop yield improvement. This study investigated the effects of two MBs, Trichoderma album and Bacillus megaterium, on an onion cultivar's growth, nutritional qualities, antioxidant properties, and yield potentials under field conditions for two successive years. Before transplantation, onion bulbs were gelatin-coated with 2.0 and 4.0 g L−1 of each of the MB. Results revealed that MBs-pretreated onion plants exhibited better growth indices, photosynthetic pigment contents, and yield-attributing features like bulb weight than control plants. Nutraceutical analysis demonstrated that T. album-pretreated (by 2.0 g L−1) onion cultivar enhanced the level of K+ (by 105.79%), Ca2+ (by 37.77%), proline (by 34.21%), and total free amino acids (by 144.58%) in bulb tissues over the control plants. Intriguingly, the pretreatment with both T. album and B. megaterium (by 2.0 g L−1) increased the levels of total soluble carbohydrates (by 19.10 and 84.02%), as well as antioxidant properties, including increased activities of superoxide dismutase (by 58.52 and 31.34%), catalase (by 164.71 and 232%), ascorbate peroxidase (by 175.35 and 212.69%), and glutathione-S-transferase (by 31.99 and 9.34%) and improved the contents of ascorbic acid (by 19.1 and 44.05%), glutathione (by 6.22 and 33.82%), and total flavonoids (by 171.98 and 56.24%, respectively) in the bulb tissues than control plants. Although both MBs promoted the growth and nutraceutical qualities of onion bulbs, T. album pretreatment showed better effects than that of B. megaterium in the field settings. Based on the morphophysiological attributes and biochemical properties, a low dose (2.0 g L−1) was more effective than a high dose (4.0 g L−1) of T. album in promoting onion growth. Overall, the current research findings imply that T. album might be a potential MB in improving growth and quality attributes, and hence the productivity of onion cultivars under field circumstances.

Proactive attenuation of arsenic-stress by nano-priming: Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles in Vigna mungo (L.) Hepper trigger antioxidant defense response and reduce root-shoot arsenic translocation

Arsenic (As) stress is mainly responsible for hampering seed germination and plant development. Accumulation of As in grains poses a major threat to agricultural output and food security. This study sought to determine the feasibility of seed priming with biogenic Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles (ZnONPs) to alleviate As-phytotoxicity in both seedlings and plants before the reproductive stage in Vigna mungo (L.) Hepper (blackgram). This report is the first of its kind in depicting stress amelioration by nano-priming in blackgram. Under As stress, ZnONPs significantly enhanced blackgram seed germination rate (20–23.33%), and other morpho-physiological attributes. The incorporation of ZnONPs resulted in a decrease in reactive oxygen species build-up (hydrogen peroxide by 23–67%) and malondialdehyde (21–69%). Additionally, ZnONPs caused a surge in the accumulation of osmoregulators and activity of antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase by 28–68%, catalase by 20–42%, guaiacol peroxidase by 19–49%, and ascorbate peroxidase by 26–39%). Results infer that ZnONPs play an immense role in mitigating As-toxicity by limiting its translocation from root to shoot. Together, this study offers the first evidence to show that nano-priming with ZnONPs can efficiently alleviate As-stress in blackgram, demonstrating its potential use as a stress-relieving agent in As-contaminated areas to increase growth and yield.

Organic waste and controlled-release fertilizer maximize the growth of Citharexylum montevidense in nursery and in the field

Background: The increase in agricultural production requires sustainable alternatives development for reusing the waste generated, such as bovine manure, to obtain ecological, environmental, and economic benefits. In addition, proper fertilization is one of the main steps in the production of forest species seedlings. Thus, this study aimed to characterize the effect of different substrates formulations based on bovine manure and types of fertilizers on the quality of C. montevidense seedlings and verify if the field confirms the nurseries’ responses. The treatments consisted of three BM-based substrates combinations (S0 - control, no manure; S30 - 30% BM; and S60 - 60% BM) and four types of base fertilizers [Control: no fertilizer, FRF - Fast Release Fertilizer (NPK + fritted trace elements), FRF2 - twice as used in FRF and CRF - Controlled Release Fertilizer]. The substrates quality and the seedlings’ morphophysiological attributes were determined 160 days after sowing, then conducting the best treatments to the field. Results: We verified that the use of bovine manure improved the physical and chemical properties of the substrates. For the C. montevidense cultivation, 30% BM plus CRF provided the best seedling development. The substrate used in the seedlings production influenced the post-planting performance of C. montevidense, and the bovine manure use allows for more significant plant growth in the field. Conclusion: For the cultivation of Citharexylum montevidense, it is recommended to use substrates composed of 30% of bovine manure, associated with 6 g L-1 of controlled-release fertilizer, as it provides higher quality seedlings in shorter production time in the nursery.

Response of Contrasting Rice Genotypes to Zinc Sources under Saline Conditions

Abiotic stresses are among the major limiting factors for plant growth and crop productivity. Among these, salinity is one of the major risk factors for plant growth and development in arid to semi-arid regions. Cultivation of salt tolerant crop genotypes is one of the imperative approaches to meet the food demand for increasing population. The current experiment was carried out to access the performance of different rice genotypes under salinity stress and Zinc (Zn) sources. Four rice genotypes were grown in a pot experiment and were exposed to salinity stress (7 dS m−1), and Zn (15 mg kg−1 soil) was applied from two sources, ZnSO4 and Zn-EDTA. A control of both salinity and Zn was kept for comparison. Results showed that based on the biomass accumulation and K+/Na+ ratio, KSK-133 and BAS-198 emerged as salt tolerant and salt sensitive, respectively. Similarly, based on the Zn concentration, BAS-2000 was reported as Zn-in-efficient while IR-6 was a Zn-efficient genotype. Our results also revealed that plant growth, relative water content (RWC), physiological attributes including chlorophyll contents, ionic concentrations in straw and grains of all rice genotypes were decreased under salinity stress. However, salt tolerant and Zn-in-efficient rice genotypes showed significantly higher shoot K+ and Zn concentrations under saline conditions. Zinc application significantly alleviates the harmful effects of salinity by improving morpho-physiological attributes and enhancing antioxidant enzyme activities, and the uptake of K and Zn. The beneficial effect of Zn was more pronounced in salt-tolerant and Zn in-efficient rice genotypes as compared with salt-sensitive and Zn-efficient genotypes. In sum, our results confirmed that Zn application increased overall plant’s performance under saline conditions, particularly in Zn in-efficient and tolerant genotypes as compared with salt-sensitive and Zn efficient rice genotypes.

Promoting growth and morpho-physiological attributes in linseed (Linum usitatissimum L.) using indole acetic acid and gibberellic acid applied individually or jointly as foliar spray

Gibberellic acid (GA3) and indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) are commercially and scientifically important due to their promising impacts on growth, quantity and quality of most crops. The current work intended to observe the effect of foliar applications of plant growth regulators (IAA and GA3) on linseed morpho-biochemical attributes and key antioxidants. Indole-3-acetic acid showed more beneficial effects on growth and antioxidant activities than those by GA3. Root length, shoot length, photosynthetic rate, root fresh weight, and N were respectively 38%, 25%, 38%, 60%, and 1.26% higher with combined treatments of IAA+GA3 than those of the control plants at the vegetative stage. The effect of IAA was highly significant on N percentage, total protein contents and fibre percentage in linseed at both seedling and vegetative stages. Overall, the nutritional value of linseed was boosted by both PGRs, i.e., GA3 and IAA. Furthermore, it is recommended that IAA, GA3 and their combined applications can be used to enhance the quality of cereal crops.

Design and Evaluation of a Smart Ex Vitro Acclimatization System for Tissue Culture Plantlets

One of the technological advancements in agricultural production is the tissue culture propagation technique, commonly used for mass multiplication and disease-free plants. The necessity for date palm tissue culture emerged from the inability of traditional propagation methods’ offshoots to meet the immediate demands for significant amounts of planting material for commercial cultivars. Tissue culture plantlets are produced in a protected aseptic in vitro environment where all growth variables are strictly controlled. The challenges occur when these plantlets are transferred to an ex vitro climate for acclimatization. Traditional glasshouses are frequently used; however, this has substantial mortality consequences. In the present study, a novel IoT-based automated ex vitro acclimatization system (E-VAS) was designed and evaluated for the acclimatization of date palm plantlets (cv. Khalas) to enhance their morpho-physiological attributes and reduce the mortality rate and the contamination risk through minimal human contact. The experimental findings showed that the morpho-physiological parameters of 6- and 12-month-old plants were higher when acclimatized in the prototype E-VAS compared to the traditional glasshouse acclimatization system (TGAS). The maximum plant mortality percentage occurred within the first month of the transfer from the in vitro to ex vitro environment in both systems, which gradually declined up to six months; after that, no significant plant mortality was observed. About 6% mortality was recorded in E-VAS, whereas 18% in TGAS within the first month of acclimatization. After six months of study, an overall 14% mortality was recorded in E-VAS compared to 41% in TGAS. The proposed automated system has a significant potential to address the growing demand for the rapid multiplication of tissue culture-produced planting materials since the plant survival rate and phenotype quality were much higher in E-VAS than in the conventional manual system that the present industry follows for commercial production.

Amendment with controlled release urea increases leaf morpho-physiological traits, grain yield and NUE in a double-cropping rice system in southern China.

Understanding of mechanisms that underpin high-yielding cropping systems is essential for optimizing management practices. Currently, the contribution of plant traits such as leaf area, chlorophyll content and intercepted photosynthetically active radiation (PARi ) to yield and nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) are not fully understood. In addition, the understanding of how canopy traits are affected by nitrogen (N) management practices is unclear. The present study aimed to determine the effect of amendment with controlled release urea (CR), common urea or no urea on NUE and plant eco-physiological characteristics in a 2-year field study in a double rice cropping system. Regulation of N release through amendment with CR significantly increased grain yield, NUE and leaf morpho-physiological attributes. CR coupled with common urea (at comparable total N rates) increased leaf area index (LAI), relative chlorophyll content index (CCI) and PARi , leading to higher grain yield and NUE (increased 24.4% and 25.3% in early and late rice, respectively) compared to local farming practice. Structural equation model (SEM) analysis showed that differences in N application, between CR and common urea, directly accounted for differences observed in soil nutrient, PARi and NUE rather than yield components. Additionally, compared to traditional yield determinants, LAI and PARi (between booting and filling stage) are capable of predicting and explaining grain yield by 0.69 and 0.92 of R2 in early and late rice, respectively. Leaf morpho-physiological traits are important for developing N management practices to increase NUE and improve food security for paddy agriculture in southern China. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.

Mitigation of salinity impact in spearmint plants through the application of engineered chitosan-melatonin nanoparticles

High soil salinity represents a critical environmental constraint to crop production. In order to ameliorate the effects of salinity, a plethora of molecules have been applied and promising outcomes have been noted. The beneficial effects of chitosan (CTS) and melatonin (Mel) application, separately, have been previously recorded with respect to plant growth and productivity, leading to the hypothesis that their conjugation in the form of chitosan-melatonin nanoparticles (CTS-HPMC-Mel NPs) could lead to further enhanced performance of plants under control and stress conditions. In this regard, novel CTS-HPMC-Mel NPs were synthesized, characterized and then employed as a chemical priming agent in spearmint (Mentha spicata L.) plants 24 h prior to salinity stress imposition. As expected, salt stress negatively affected morphophysiological attributes such as plant height, leaf number, leaf fresh weight, leaf dry weight, photosynthetic pigments, Fv/Fo, and Fv/Fm. On the other hand, stress-related attributes, such as content of proline, MDA and H2O2, as well as activity of APX and GP enzymes were increased in response to salt stress. However, adverse effects of salt stress were ameliorated with Mel and CTS-HPMC-Mel NP treatments by enhancing morphological traits, proline, antioxidant enzymatic activities, as well as content of dominant constituents of essential oil profile. It is worth noting that conjugated form of Mel with chitosan, in comparison with solo treatment of Mel, was more effective in combating stress effects. To our knowledge, this is the first report to demonstrate that engineered CTS-HPMC-Mel NPs could be applied as an innovative protective agent to mitigate the effects of salinity in crop plants.

Microglia morphophysiological diversity and its implications for the CNS

Microglia are mononuclear phagocytes of mesodermal origin that migrate to the central nervous system (CNS) during the early stages of embryonic development. After colonizing the CNS, they proliferate and remain able to self-renew throughout life, maintaining the number of microglia around 5-12% of the cells in the CNS parenchyma. They are considered to play key roles in development, homeostasis and innate immunity of the CNS. Microglia are exceptionally diverse in their morphological characteristics, actively modifying the shape of their processes and soma in response to different stimuli. This broad morphological spectrum of microglia responses is considered to be closely correlated to their diverse range of functions in health and disease. However, the morphophysiological attributes of microglia, and the structural and functional features of microglia-neuron interactions, remain largely unknown. Here, we assess the current knowledge of the diverse microglial morphologies, with a focus on the correlation between microglial shape and function. We also outline some of the current challenges, opportunities, and future directions that will help us to tackle unanswered questions about microglia, and to continue unravelling the mysteries of microglia, in all its shapes.

Effect of Different Altitudes on Morpho-Physiological Attributes Associated with Mango Quality

Mango (Mangifera indica L.) is a widely cultivated fruit in tropical and subtropical areas at altitudes ranging from 100 to 1500 m above sea level (masl). However, little is known about the effects of altering altitudes on the morpho-physiological traits determining the commercial value of mango. Therefore, we systematically investigated a commercial mango cultivar at eight altitudes ranging from 680 to 1400 masl to check the environmental impact on morpho-physiological attributes and volatile compounds using analysis of variance, principal component analysis, clustering, and correlation. We observed an increase in fruit weight and size from 680 to 1000 masl elevation and a gradual decrease at higher altitudes above 1000 msl. In contrast, quality parameters, including total soluble solids and total sugar, decreased with the increase in altitude, while the total acid increased with the increase in altitude. Moreover, we characterized the dried fruit, pericarp, and sarcocarp for aromatic compounds and identified 110 volatile compounds. The accumulation pattern of the volatiles suggested a considerable influence of environmental factors associated with altering altitudes. However, there was no clear trend in the volatile accumulation at different altitudes. We further determined the ten most frequently occurring volatiles at different altitudes and tissues. For instance, Alpha-Guaiene was only identified at 1000–1215 masl altitudes in dried fruit, while Beta-Ocimene showed the highest accumulation at 900 masl in dried fruit and pericarp. Together, our study provides clues on the impact of the altitude on mango fruit yield and quality attributes, which will guide future agronomic practices.

Impact of PGRS Priming on Germination and Seedling Parameters of Pea And Plantago under Artificial Magnetism

Seed priming is widely recognized as a significant phenomenon for synchronizing germination and enhancing the vigor of seeds. Seeking the importance of priming, the influence of magnetic treatments in overall performance of plants cannot be undermined as well. In the present study, seeds of Pisum sativum L. and Plantago ovata Forssk. were primed with essential Plant Growth Regulators (PGRs) such as; Gibberellic acid (GA3), Potassium nitrate (KNO3), Salicylic acid (SA), Ascorbic acid (AsA), Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in combination with different artificial magnetic treatment (North, South and N/S) to document morpho-physiological attributes. A lab experiment was conducted under Complete Randomized Design (CRD) which consisted of 6 seed priming treatment along with control (no-priming) each with three replications. Seeds were primed with water (H2O) and PGRs for 12 hours and the final harvest of seedlings was obtained for morpho-physiological analysis after 20 days of germination. Results portrayed statistically significant (p < 0.05) data by increasing the morphological characteristics (root/shoot length, number of leaves, root/shoot fresh weight and root/shoot dry weight). Similarly, photosynthetic pigments i.e., chl a and carotenoids recorded significant variations under artificial magnetism except chl b which showed non-significant (p > 0.05) variations. Results concluded that hydro priming and pre-soaking of seeds with essential PGRs are highly recommended to maximize the early germination, morpho-physiological performance in pea and plantago seedlings under artificial magnetism.

Foliar application of thiourea, salicylic acid, and kinetin alleviate salinity stress in maize grown under etiolated and de-etiolated conditions

Salinity stress and the absence of light negatively impact growth and development of the plants. Morpho-physiological and biochemical attributes of maize (Zea mays L.) get severely affected by salt stress and subdue light. Therefore, a pot experiment was conducted under the prevailing environmental conditions of Turbat, Balochistan, to explore etiolation and the de-etiolation response of maize hybrid (SP-17S23) to salinity stress under exogenous application of plant growth regulators (PGRs). Maize seedlings in three sets, i.e., non-etiolated, etiolated, de-etiolated, subjected to salinity stress (120 mM NaCl) after 15 days of seed germination. After a week, the seedlings were sprayed with optimized levels of different PGRs, including thiourea (TU; 10 mM), salicylic acid (SA; 250 µM), and kinetin (KIN; 3 µM). Salinity stress hampered plant growth and affected morpho-physiological attributes. However, PGRs foliar treatment proved effective, thus ameliorating the impact of salinity and etiolation on maize seedlings. Growth attributes (root/shoot length, leaf area, root/shoot fresh and dry weight), photosynthetic pigments (Chl a, b and carotenoids) were significantly enhanced under the foliar treatment of PGRs, especially under TU and KIN treatments. However, the oxidative damage parameters, i.e., malondialdehyde (MDA) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), decreased under the treatment of PGRs, thereby protecting seedlings under salinity and etiolated conditions. Overall, PGRs enhanced tolerance potential of plants under salinity stress with the consideration of light variations remain the key concern for developing healthy and vigor seedling strands.
