Modern refractory materials for lining of heating furnaces

The following refractory materials are recommended for the purpose of thermal insulation of the basic structural elements of reheating furnaces and increasing lining life: for the working lining of the beams (hearth tubes) concrete shaped parts to TU 14-8-434-83 or type SMKRBT concrete mixture to TU 14-8-381-89; for the monolithic lining of the walking hearth types SShBT, SMKRBT, and SMKBT concrete mixtures to TU 14-8-381-89; for the monolithic lining of roofs and walls types MShBP and MMKBP plastic compounds to TU 14-8-534-87 or type SShBT concrete mixture to TU 14-8-381-89 in combination with types SShBGTs-1.5 to TU 14-8-567-88 and SShBGTs-0.9 thermal insulation concretes; for lining the roof burners type SMKBT concrete mixture to TU 14-8-381-89.

The Magnezit Combine has developed bodies for monolithic linings of steel ladles, providing more effective use of starting materials with a simultaneous increase in the resistance of the metallurgical equipment. However, to achieve the advantages it is necessary to redesign the existing production line, especially the mixing and weighing sections.

A magnesiosilicate lining for continuous casting machine tundish ladles

The production test conducted of magnesiosilicate compounds produced from concentration waste of Kempirsaisk chrome ores showed the possibility in principle of use of this inexpensive secondary raw material for preparation of monolithic tundish linings. The introduction of magnesiosilicate linings prepared from concentration waste makes it possible to eliminate the use of periclase powders and chrome ore and also to increase the service life of tundishes by 1.5-2 times in comparison with tundishes lined with aluminosilicate and silica materials

Periclase-carbon granules

Periclase-carbon granules consisting of a core of granular periclase powder and a shell (case) containing graphite, periclase, additives, and an organic binder form during the process of body preparation. The specific surface of the granules decreases with increasing diameter of the granules. After calcination at 1000°C, the specific surface of the granules increases by approximately an order of magnitude. The magnetic fraction obtained from the crushed (milled) granules contains the maximum quantity of graphite and, consequently, the maximum extent of carbon burn-ups is observed in this fraction. It is advisable to use the periclase-carbon granules for the pressed, rammed, and vibrated bodies and for the products, blocks, and monolithic linings of various thermal units.

Refractory compounds of basic composition for the monolithin lining of steel-teeming ladles

Questions of the method of production of basic ramming compounds at Panteleimonovka Refractory Plant and their use in the monolithic lining of the walls of 160-ton steel-teeming ladles of the No. 2 Converter Shop of Kirvoi Rog Steel Combine are considered. An analysis of the wear of the lining during service showed that it occurs as the result of spalling of the sintered zone and salamandering of the lining. The use of a movable thermally insulated lid made it possible to hold the temperature of the ladle lining within limits of 730–1120°C between heats and to obtain a basic rammed lining life of 21–39 heats as opposed to an average life for the shop of 14.8 heats. A reserve for increasing the ladle basic lining life is optimization of the thermal conditions of its service, including high-temperature heating of the lining before pouring of the metal, the use of thermally insulated lids with the minimum consumption of time for placing of them, an increase in the life of the well refractory to the life of the walls and bottom, and elimination of cooling of the lining between heats.

Drying of steel teeming ladle monolithic linings

Investigations were made of existing methods of drying of the monolithic linings of the steel teeming ladles of the open hearth shops of Nizhnii Tagil and Magnitogorsk Metallurgical Combines and their shortcomings were revealed. A burner was developed providing more uniform heating of the ladle lining and permitting drying using any specified cycle. A significant saving in fuel and a reduction in drying time were obtained.

Shaped blocks of refractory fibers

The use of fiber refractories makes it possible to significantly reduce the material consumption for linings and to increase their life with a simultaneous reduction in heat losses. This paper presents monolithic burner blocks similar to those produced abroad and thermal insulation semicircular blocks for lining the production furnaces. The method of production of the shaped fibrous lining blocks is explained. An experimental lot of monolithic burner blocks and fiber lining blocks were produced from using the method. The temperature of use of the lining blocks may be increased to 1350 C by the use of aluminochromium silicate or similar fibers as the fiber component.

Introduction of rammed linings for 250-ton steel-teeming ladles at Makeevka Metallurgical Combine

In the open hearth shop of the Makeevka Metallurgical Combine the 250-ton steel-teeming ladles have been converted from a brick lining to a monolithic quartzite-clay rammed lining prepared with the use of a sand slinger using MKG-1 mixture according to Technical Specification 14-8-252-77 produced by the Krasnogorovka Refractory Plant. The use of monolithic linings of the ladle walls provided an increase in their average life from 9.06 to 15.6 heats.

Effect of drying on the quality of monolithic linings of the bottoms of steel-pouring ladles

It is known up to 20% of the refractories consumed by ferrous metallurgical plants are used to line steel-pouring ladles. An effective method of reducing the consumption of ladle brick is the use of unformed refractory materials and the manufacture of monolithic linings from these materials. However, only the ladles walls are made in this manner, and most plants continue to make the bottom lining out of ladle brick.
